The combatants (and their League rankings) were: Turin Turambar, Red (21); Sir Ripper, Green (11); Havell, Blue (61); and Lovesword, Black (19). Clearly, with three players contending for Round E, this would be a hard-fought war! Turin builds elephants on turn 1. Nobody else builds two-turn units until turn 6, when Black builds heavy cavalry. Green does not hire a second hero, nor does Black. Green builds spiders in five of his first six cities, and in over half of the cities that he takes over after that! (the other one was the capital, where he changed archer production to light cavalry). By turn 3, Red has four pikemen cities! On turn 3, Turin (Red) suggests peace to Sir Ripper (Green), but suggests to Black that they could ally if Green turns him down. Green takes this as an affront, and declares war on Red, suggesting peace with Black, who agrees. Red and Blue agree to an alliance of necessity. On turn 6, the blood really begins to flow. Black kills Blue's hero, and fights seven battles against the Red/Blue alliance. On turn 7, Red takes a Green city, and sacks spider production. Green takes it back and builds - what else? - spiders! On turn 9, Red claims to have erred, and suggests that Green join in a three-way battle against the surging Lovesword. Green declines, and the direction of the war is sealed. On turn 11, Red gets some relief, killing Green's hero and demon, but the onslaught of Green and Black forces is only slowed. On turn 13, Blue's hero is slain by Black, and the end is in sight for Blue, although Blue and Red still control 20 cities between them. By turn 18, Red must take solace in holding back Green, as Lovesword (Black) runs nearly unopposed through the southlands. A top-16 contender from his Round B finish, Turin (Red) tells himself that at least he will soon be free of the burden: > "Tis not an ignominious end!" cried Tuor indignantly. We fought as > best we \could, but we were outnumbered and out strategized, and we > were unsuccessful in altering the outcome either militarily or > diplomatically. Tis no disgrace to go down in such a matter, > especially to one as cunning as the Lovesword. His planning is so deep > that few are likely to match him in the coming battles, for surely he > will have more to come -- hehe. More late nights, worrisome strategy > sessions, aching backs and ulcers. Heh, not for me, nope, no sir!" > > "But what about the enemy units on our island!" Wailed the rat. > > "Oh them," replied Tuor. "Kill them. Kill them all!" > > And so it was On the last move, Lovesword finally has something to say - very tactfully indicating his views about Turin's persuasive skills: > You were the most vocal diplomaticaly of us all, and in my opinion this > was a double-edged sword for you. Black finished the game with 35 cities, Green had 11, and Red and Black both had 1 each.
