I am still sorting out my thoughts on this scenario. It does seem that our diagonal orientation will keep us (white -red) from a confrontation until much later in the game and thus we will have a long time to give further thought to such an arrangement anyway. At this point I think I would be better served by making some arrangement with either my BLUE or YELLOW neigbor. TURIN and/or KEREM, if you are listening, please advise of your interest or disinterest in some form of alliance or boundry arrangement. JDK _______________________________________________________________________________ The following message was sent on Wednesday February 25, 1998 at 11:50 AM EST by "Kerem Kandemir" to all players; Dear JDK, In your first diplomacy message yo wrote: "..........At this point I think I would be better served by making some arrangement with either my BLUE or YELLOW neigbor. TURIN and/or KEREM, if you are listening, please advise of your interest or disinterest in some form of alliance or boundry arrangement." Well, I have been trying to apply some 'game theory' for the optimal selection of allies in RoundB map. Below is the conclussion of my analyses: Since the map is only symetric on the 'y' axis (it's not a square but a rectangle), mutual maximization of benefits would be achieved when 'close sides' are allied. However, this forces the sides to take additional risks in case of sneak attacks. Moreover, Preventive measures to deter sneak attacks reduce the merits of allignment. Therefore, my first choice would be YOU. For the reasons I stated above, I am only available for strong and faithfull partnerships. That is to say: 1- I do not want to fight with my former ally at any stage of the game. 2- I would like to have the addvantage of leaving my 'border cities' with minimal defence, since I wish to believe that my ally will never turn against me. 3- I would like to believe that my ally will not quit the game or loose concentration during play. 4- I would like to have the advantage of taking common action against possible aggressors. Indeed, continious consultation is the key for a succesfull mission. I read all the introductory messages and so far, I have the perjudice that you are a lawfull, trustworthy warlord. If you are interested in a 'symbiotic alliance' with me, please let me know. In any case, I wish you good luck, The omnipotent PS. I will contact the other players (hi guys) in my turn report. _______________________________________________________________________________ The following message was sent on Wednesday February 25, 1998 at 10:06 PM EST by john kalish to all players; KEREM (it will take me a few more turns to confirm your "omnipotent status") I agree to the alliance. Although I am not so certain that I (or you, for that matter) can absolutely conform to your long "partnership credo list", I am sure we can work out any matters of uncertainty as we move forward (and Northward, of course). We should within the next turn, or so, confirm our boundries (what to do with the (southern) center city and ruin), etc. John _______________________________________________________________________________ Turn 1, game B24 was sent to JDK (Red) on Thursday February 26, 1998 at 10:42 AM EST and is due on Sunday March 1, 1998 at 10:42 AM EST. _______________________________________________________________________________ The following message was sent on Thursday February 26, 1998 at 10:42 AM EST by t30ljs1@corn.cso.niu.edu to all players; B24 turn 1 side 2 Report: initially: cities: 1, income: 64, warchest: 13039, expenses: 25 And so it came to pass that in the northeast arose a hero -- truly a searcher for knowledge and goodies -- and the people did not know what to call him, so he named himself Tuor, and the people rejoiced ... hero tuor emerges in 02, which he promptly renamed Nargothrond (02), Tuor was hungry, so he ate the scout he found there. While eating Tuor found a baby giant bat and murtured it. Turo was surprised to find that the cost of nurturing bats was 160 gold. The bat began to grow swiftly, so swiftly in fact that Tuor expected it would be full grown the very next day. ... And Tuor sped forth in search of friends and goodies. To the Northeast, buried deep within the mountains he espied himself 2 sets of ruinjs, cryptically named NE Elemental and NE Ghost. Curious, he ran pell mell till he at last reached the ruin. Searching through the broken rocks he came upon an elemental quietly knitting a long yellow scarf. "Join me!" cried Tuor, "and together we shall find goodies!" "I shall join your side," replied the elemental, "but since you have not showered in days, I shall seek my goodies on my own!" And the elemental sprang up, threw his yellow scarf around his neck and sped off to the Southeast (because that was the only way he could!). Tuor, knowing he was ripe, wtill pressed on to visit the other ruin. When he reached the broken down huts at the NE Ghost site, he spotted a ghost holding it's nose and backing away --"Please, don't come any closer," mewled the ghost. "I will do your bidding but you MUST bathe soon!" With these words the ghost flew off, but not before giving Tuor it's cellular phone #. Tuor cast himself down in the broken down hut and wept --"Oh where shall I find me a place to bathe?" And he slept. In the meantime the elemental ran at great speed utnil he espied the city of 22. Gleefully he pillaged this place of its scouting ability, taking a total of 175 gold. A large of sack of spider eggs began hatching as soon as the scouts were removed from their vicinity (it being a well known fact that spiders and scouts can not exist in the same place at the same time!). Although my solution of standardization is accepted, we were in dispute with the 'Rules Gurus' about the min. quantitiy of gold of the sack missions as well as the num. of allies to be recieved as a reward. In that case, everyone (even our opponents) will be having his equal share of this prosperous map." I may be missing something on the map, but it appears that each of four map quadrants (excluding the center "spider" cities and what I next describe as the "four outer cities") contain 10 cities and an identical number/content of ruins. The four outer cities and contiguous ruins (located by drawing two penpendicular bisecting lines through the center of the map (including "07" in the south) are "extra" cities/ruins, the ownership of which does not equalize but creates an advantage in the owner over his (ease-west or north -south) abutting neighbor. Please correct my analysis or otherwise explain how your decision to capture "7" and the nearby ruin is consistent with our 'symbiotic alliance' (or did I get the "pilot fish" end of the arrangement). Uncomprehendingly, they saw a a strange banner flying next to their new solid yellow banner (left by the elemental in honor of his new odoriferous master, Tuor). The new standard was also yellow, but it showed 3 brilliant jewels also on the standard. "What can this mean?" the people cried. Soon enough their questions were answered when the beautiful Galadriel emerged from her motel room with a freshly signed contract in her hand (and a tidy signing bonus in her pocket. "I have signed on to fight with the odoriferous one!" she cried out in a booming voice, "hear me good people of 22, for soon I shall rename this fair town to be henceforth known as ....." ---just then her chief advisor, a wizard of some repute tugged at her sleeve and whispered in her ear for some length of time. After which she cut short her speech, "I will rename this fair city later, for now scouts report the imminent arrival of what may be a hostile ghost from the East, I must prepare for him. So she and the wizard flew off to 53 and pillaged its scouts, renaming the city without ceremony to Gondolin (53). There she received the ghosts message -- transmitted through a LONG piece of string attached to a tin can. Pondering for no great length, Galadriel made an executive decision -- "YES!, let us ally together and crush those warmth stealers from the South!" she cried out, for her voice was really quite loud. "WE HAVE BEEN COLD TOO LONG! Undoubtedly they are the ones who have stolen my beloved jewels, we must CRUSH them!" So it is written, or so it was said (!). And she feasted upon orangutans and berries. NEWS FROM THE EAST The morning sun broke crisp and clear over the nasty smelly hovel where Tuor slept. Yawning a great yawn he stretched mightily and stared all around him, "what am I doing in this place? And WHAT is that awful stench?!?!?!?!?" Quickly gathering up his belongings, Tuor began searching for more knowledge and goodies. Realizing quickly (for he was a fast learner) that he could not climb the mountains he was facing he turned back South. Only a short way down the road (and upwind) he espied him a giant mouse with wings. Approaching closer he realized it was a in fact a hanging upside-down and snoozing. "AHA!" thought Tuor, "I can ride me this winged mouse like a steed!" Then quick as a whip he leaped up and grabbed the winged mouse tight. "Now you must carry me whither soever I choose!" cried Tuor, who was nothing if not overexuberant. With great alacrity Tuor placed his tack and harness on the bat (he always carried some just in case his horse should ever return -- unlikely until the horse's sense of smell disappears :) and leapt upon the mouse. The mouse groaned mightiliy (though whether from the weight or the stench none could tell) and in response to Tuor's urgings carried him upwards into the sky (at least the air was clean while it was flying!). From his perch high in the air Tuor could learn many things ... Off to the west, Tuor saw the emergence of his beautiful lady-to-be, Galadriel, in the city of 22 (he did not see the huge1107 gold bribe she accepted in order to be on his side!). He did notice the nice Wizard she showed up performed some amazing stunts with a rabbit ...before the two went Southwest to 25 and pillaged its scouts for 175 gold. Renaming that city Gondolin (25), construction began iimmediately on a production facility for [ ] Further to the SW Tuor saw his friend the elemental (still running at full speed away from the stench) pillage the scout production in 53 for 175 gold. Looking to the South, Tuor espied the fragrantly challenged ghost floating into 23, whereupon the scouts were scared into giving up all of their gold value -- 175 gold. A griffin hatchery was begun in the town. Tuor learned much this day..., but unfortunately not the location of a bathhouse. Turn 3, for the Eldar Folks -- Tuor was awakened by the sound of his giant rat's wings beating, he thought, in an effort to awaken him (the giant winged rat, of course, was attempting to keep the stench from getting to close). Shaking the sleep from his eyes Tuor leapt immediately onto the giant winged rat's back (once again forgetting his need to bathe), "Onward faithful rat -- to the ruins nearby I seek something shiny!" And off they went. At the ruins Tuor found a lovely trinket upon which were inscribed the words 'command +2'. "Hmmm ... I knew I should have studied more in school," thought Tuor. "I sure wish I could read!" The rat sighed and read the trinket to Tuor. "Ahhh! Command +2! I wish I knew what that meant!" cried Tuor, as they winged off to the south. At that the rat had had enough and he threw Tuor forward into a nearby stream. Tuor happily remembered to bathe before he trudged on southward into the city of 23. "This city reminds me of Vinyamar by the sea," said Tuor. And so the people, rejoicing that he had bathed, renamed the city to Vinyamar (23). And Tuor slept .... Galadriel, unknowing that her human ally had already bathed, hurriedly continued toward the imposing devil ruin, there she found, surprisingly enough, a devil. (He was reading a copy of the Silmarillion) "Shouldn't you be fighting Melkor?" he asked? "Yeah, but there was a lull in the battle, and I was bored," replied Galadriel. "Would you like to help me out or must I kill you," she asked the devil. After briefing considering the alternative, the devil leapt to his feet and bowed low --"It would be my great pleasure to serve you, my lady" cried the devil and he ran off to do her bidding. "Today," thought Tuor "I shall bathe properly!" At this there was much rejoicing in the heart of the little winged rat, for the previous night's dunking had only partially managed to clean off Tuor, short-lived though it was --"But first," continued Tuor, "I shall rename this glorious city to honor my first bath, and in that honor I name this city Menegroth (23) due to the river flowing nearby, so similar to that river in the forest ..." With that thought Tuor wandered off in a daze, forgetting to bathe, and even abandoning his faithful winged rat, absentmindedly mounting a ferocious griffon (fortunately a griffon suffering from allergies!) and flew off in search of goodies. And the people of Menegroth (23) rejoiced -- as much for the cleanliness of their air as for the new and interesting name to their city. Meanwhile off to the west ... a spider sailed up to the city of 26 and pillaged its scout production facility (after first carefully wrapping the current scout in silk to preserve it for the arachnid natural history museum), the sale of scout memorabilia raised 175 gold for Tuor's bath construction fund (a new public works project supported wholeheartedly by all in the empire). Still further west the lady Galadriel packed a shiny new apple into her lunch bag thinking, with relish, "this apple will taste SO good for my dinner," and headed out to sea flying with her friends southward. Eventually she and wizard flew off to investigate a rocky blob seen inland of a nearby shore. They came upon an arcane stone circle with a peculiar sign crudely nailed to a post. On the sign were the words "NE Worm." When Galadriel entered the circle a large (you guessed it) worm appeared, looking at her hungrily --"Do you have any apples?" the worm eagerly asked. Galadriel thought about the worm, and then thought about the apple she had stowed in her lunchbag. She thought about the twenty foot worm, and thought about her apple. She pictured the worm accidentally inhaling her apple before it even saw it. "No," she lied, "but I hear there are some large apple trees further south. Why don't you try to find my friend Tuor down there and see if he has picked any of them." Expectantly the worm crawled off to the south (though at that size it turned out to be a frightfully swift crawl!). "Whew!" Whispered the wizard to Galadriel, "that was close!" Galadriel moved away from the stone circle (afraid another worm might show up while she was eating her apple! And she cast herself down and slept. Still further south, a ghost flew up to the bridge approaching the central city of 62, as the ghost drew near it could see the masts of a ship full of spiders already moored there, waiting for the ghost as prearranged. In concert the two fell upon the city of 62 and its spider defenders. Though the battle was fierce (and the ghost's spider allies were killed in a last ditch assault on the postern gate) eventually the ghost ate the last of the neutral spiders and then rapidly and without thinking destroyed the spiders lair. When the ghost realized what he had done he repented (for he knew what his secret orders had told him) and he swiftly created a spider lair and a bat cave within the city limits. "At least I did recover 350 gold from the spider's tangled web," thought the ghost. **Turn report for Yellow (side 2, Turin Turambar), game B24** Turn start: cities -- 7 gold: 6382 income: 280 expenses: 35 Galadriel joins with giant worm at NE Worm Spider pillages scouts in 26, builds archers ghost and spider pillage spiders in 62, build spiders and bats Hero experience: init change final Tuor 9 0 9 Galadriel 5 + 3 8 Gold worksheet: Start 6382 pillage 62, 26 +525 build spider 62 -700 build bat 62 -160 build archer 26 -1000 final gold +5047 Turn finish: cities -- 9 gold: 5047 income: 380 expenses: 59 Alex, by all means take 05 and pillage it. Too tired in fact to consider bathing, he knew he had a long day ahead of him. From nearby he caught a ride with his faithful Giant rat and discovered a lovely ruined bathhouse. Although there was no longer running water there, he did find a lovely item inscribed with strange runes. The giant rat sighed and once again read the writing (this item will let you fly with as many companions as you can normally fit, usually 8, :) ). Tuor said, "Cool! Now I don't feel so bad about missing my bath! The rat sighed. Meanwhile off in the East the Lady Galadriel and her wizard confidante traveled to a ruin east of the fabled city of 54. There she was swiftly able to bedazzle a demon with her great beauty and witty conversation. The demon readily agreed to join her in her quest to make the unwashed (and somewhat slightly dazed) Tuor greatest of captains (under her sway of course). The Demon ran to the east and conquered the city of 24, pillaging the scouts there, and creating an orcish mob. In less noteworthy reports, a ghost and a giant bat conquered the city of 65, pillaging the spiders, unfortuantely the bats gave their lives, so in their honor more bat caves were built. Finally in the northernmost part of the world, a spider takes the city of 21, pillaging scouts and building giant bats. **Turn report for Yellow (side 2, Turin Turambar), game B24** Turn 5 start: cities: 9 gold: 5368 income: 380 expenses: 59 Galadriel searches ruin, greets Demon. Until he came to the ruins where a demon had lived. There he happily rendezvoused with his Lady, Galadriel, only to discover that she was unable to remain near to him due to his odoriferous nature. Abashed Tuor gave to his Lady Command Item B and the Yellow Standard, then he rested near to the ruins. The Lady Galadriel having received many new shiny things from her nasty smelling consort immediately flew away from him with her wizard at top speed, in the distance she espied a temple and headed for it, hoping for a cleansing bath and a blessing, once there she was blessed and recieved a quest pillage 906 gold from the enemies. To the south, the intrepid and delicate-nosed ghost noticed what he thought had to be a mistake, a red ghost hovering in the air within striking range. Conferring with a new bat in the city of 65, it was agreed that the evil red ghost was encroaching upon Yellow lands and must be stopped. The 2 flew off, rendezvoused at the ghost and dispelled it. Unfortunately the bat flew too near the sun in celebration, and his wings melted. The double blessed elemental raced off and pillaged 64 of 350 gold, burning the decrepit old spider webs there and causing to be woven new stronger webs. Hopefully we can work out something not only to provide a positive continuity to our alliance but a basis for your continued interest in this game. JDK _______________________________________________________________________________ The following message was sent on Thursday April 16, 1998 at 01:17 PM EDT by t30ljs1@corn.cso.niu.edu to all players; Hi all my enemies and allies and moderators -- I just wanted to let you know that I will be going on vacation for a week (4-17 to 4-25) and will very likely be unable to play during that time (although I will try). If my ally completes his turn today I should be able to finish turn 7 before I leave tomorrow, if not I will have to stall us up for a week. I thought I had calculated that I was "relatively" safe (but then again I also thought I "relatively" knew what I was doing)!!! Your move in having Tuor deliver the flying item to the new hero was quite clever (it never dawned on me). And even while reviewing the post mortem of your 7th turn I kept overlooking the orm within striking distance (that was really the "killer"). To the extent I have transgressed any of the rules (whether purposely or inadvertantly) I should receive whatever the official sanction is. Secondly. In all honesty I never really studied the Deplomacy rules and the only aspect of the deplomacy rules I have retained any (present) conscious knowledge of is that all communications about the game (except I assume for certain inquirey to the moderator) must be made to all players. Thus I have at no time restrained from sending a message at any time to all. Thirdly. Still retaining the same "obliviousness", I failed to notice the requirement of mentioning the old city number in the report. In that the original number is still shown in the city descriptions this requirement does seem meaningless ---- at least to someone like me who has yet to figure out the geographical chronology of the numbering convention anyway. Lastly. After reading my "explanations" which is merely a recitation of blatant ignorance I think that my penalty should be doubled. And while you are at it, you should also penalize (I think this is a less painful procedure now) yourself for failing to notice my total lack of "rules sense" for 7 turns, so there !!!!! He mused while absentmindedly pulling on his filthy clothes, before emerging on the deck of his beautiful ship. Perhaps I will get it back today. Lets head towards that spit of land. While sailing, Tuor spotted somebody flying in the air towards him, as she passed a nearby spit of land she threw something that glittered all the way to the ground, and landed on the road beyond. Tuor quickly made for the shore and searched the ground for the shiny thing (since he so loved shiny things), there he found something which looked very similar to his shiny flying thing. "Hullo," thought Tuor, "I now have 2 shiny flight items!" -- Of course he didn't recognize that it was in fact the flight item he had loaned to Melian, since she had sterilized it right after he gave it to her. While Tuor's ship (crew having clothespinned their noses) headed towards land, the Lady Melian decided to give back the flight item to the dolt (errr Commander in chief), so she flew back to the east. Their she espied a boat sailing erratically towards the shore, most of the crew packed onto the windward side, and several appeared to be retching. As she approached closer, Melian realized that Tuor was perched in the crow's nest (at least it looked like a very dirty version of Tuor). Flying over the coast, Melian threw down the flight item and ran onto the road, hoping to escape the stench when Tuor came to ground. To the south where the real battles were roiling, The Lady Galadriel completed her quest by running south along the road with her demon and pillaging the city of Edoras (35) of its griffins, she caused to be built giants, light cavalry, and bats, for it seemed like a city in need of fortification. In recognition of her quest, Manwe granted Galadriel the use of an archon. This she sent promptly to sack and pillage the city of Rivendell (36) of its giants. As the day wore longer, the noises of fortification grew annoying, and Galadriel went off a little ways from the city to rest. I believe we will be able to hold there, but I had to vector some units there to be certain (and setup an eventual central push south). I applaud your excellent slaying of our blue foes hero. Blessed Devil takes Rohan(32). Tuor smells bad and carries Melian to a rendezvous with giant bat and floating spider, Melian uses fly/float trick to move to current location. Tuor heads towards temple hoping for a bath. Galadriel tires of carrying command items and drops them, flies towards giant worm ruin. [diplomatic message to white] [Trebor, the center looks like it should hold for the moment, do you have any plans for that blue monster fortress that I can aid? I should be able to apply some pressure to blue, but probably not for 2-3 turns minimum, should I focus on that or should I keep the pressure on Red, which will delay any pressure I can apply to Blue for ~5 turns or so. My initial assault on Red has just about petered out and will take a few turns to reset, plus it will soon become much harder as JDK has wisely reconvened his forces into a few power stacks, I may need to withdraw slightly to regroup, depending on his next few moves.] JDK, well played move. Although with your rather aggressive troop positioning I am beginning to suspect that you wish to begin hostilities earlier than that. I do not wish to break an alliance, as I have not done so yet and have no intention do so. What would you say to setting a turn for the official ending of our alliance? Say turn 14? If we don't eliminate the Southerners before we go into open conflict, then there will be the possibility that we both end up in worse shape even than a 50/50 split since both of the Southerners possess significant firepower and can easily rebound if they are given a chance to regroup themselves, thus costing either or both of us cities, and or position (since we will be required to devote some of our units to stave them off, and consequently have fewer units for the Final Conflict. I propose a turn 14 end of alliance, and a turn 15 beginning of conflict. This allows us 4 turns to finish the South (I am not certain this will be enough actually, unless we both devote our armies to the task). The one turn grace period will allow each of us to regroup slightly. What say you to this suggestion? Still it seemed best to prepare for a possible conflict with his strong ally, so Tuor commanded several of his troops to return to the homeland strictly as a protective measure. Then he flew on to the Eastern Temple where he was blessed (but not bathed) and received a quest. He then joined a group of spiders. Fortunately the spiders have no scent glands and cannot smell how ripe their leader is.
