__________ __________/ \__________ <__________ Turn 1 __________> \__________/ _______________________________________________________________________________ The following message was sent on Thursday February 26, 1998 at 04:16 AM EST by Gary Holcombe to all players; Dragon Lord Gary IV gets up this morning and heads over to the gym in the south side of his castle to begin his morning workout. He turns on one of his favorite albums by Rush - Permanent Waves and begins his workout to the Spirit of Radio - "Begin the day with a friendly voice, A companion unobtrusive Plays that song that's so elusive And the magic music makes your morning mood." - Rush His workout is inturrupted by the news that the tournament messanger has arrived to inform him that - Round B begins!!!!!! His excitement is quickly turned into amazement as he is suddenly transported to the most amazing world he has ever witnessed. He looks around and begins to comtemplate all the possibilities. After spending time strategizing and developing his battle plan, he decides on his first move. Before he does anything else, he looks over and says to the little scout "Begone! I will have none of your ilk in my army." His first move is to walk over to the NW Elemental ruin and there he finds two elementals eagerly awaiting to join him. He hears the galloping in the background and turns to see what's coming. A little imp on horseback comes riding up and shouts into a huge megaphone five times as large as he is - "Tournament Rules. You may only keep one." Suddenly one of the elementals fades into nothingness and the little imp continues on his way. As he has heard about these strange tournament rules in the legends from his father and his father's father and his father's father's father before him, he gracefully accepts the dictates of the tournament and continue on his way. He next moves on to the NW Ghost ruin and discovers two ghosts which are thrilled to be asked to join his troops. However, this time a huge clap of thunder is heard in the sky and there he sees a cloud formation which is in the form of the words "Thanks for playing, but only one ghost is allowed. Say goodbye to Casper." As the clouds fade away, so does one of the ghosts. Greatly disappointed, he turns around his head and begins issuing orders. His first order is to inform the elemental to go and take city 12. The elemental goes ahead and does that removing the pesky little scout which was guarding it with the ease of which a knife goes through butter. He then renames city 12 as 12 Griffin Home. He also renames city 01 as 01 Dragon City. Finally, he orders bats and pegasi to be purchased for 01 Dragon City and bats, light infantry, and griffins to be purchased for 12 Griffin Home. Thus ends the first day of the battle. ______________________________________________________________________ Report for tournament Round B, Game 23, Turn 1, Side 1 Amount of gold at beginning of turn - 13,039 Gary IV visits NW Elemental and picks up an elemental. He drafts up the following reply. I agree that an alliance until turn twelve should prove advantageous. I also like the clause to continue the alliance should it continue to provide a benefit after turn twelve. As far as city 08 is concerned, it lies in the neutral ground between our borders. I would like it as well. Therefore, since razing is set to any time, whomever gets there first should immediately raze it, eliminating the possible dispute between us. That is the fairest way to settle that situation. To me, the Western gold ruin is a matter of whomever gets to it first. If that happens to be me, so be it. If not, that's ok as well. I agree with everything else. One more thing, there is a temple on our border. I propose that we agree to allow free access for each other to take advantage of the temple's blessings. He reads the first from Solomani and is overcome with amusement. He cannot keep his amusement bottled up. His servants are a little shaken up by this uncharacteristic behavior and scurry away quickly. His reply to Solomani is very brief - "Forget it. The whole purpose of my alliance with Knight Isc is to free up my men for an all out assault on your pitiful forces." He next reads a very surprising offer of alliance from the Wargs to Knight Isc. Assuming that Knight Isc felt the same way about an alliance with the Wargs as he felt about an alliance with Solomani, he was most confident that Knight Isc would respond to the Wargs in a similar manner to his response to Solamani. He is therefore quite taken aback when he discovers that his final diplomatic message indicates that Knight Isc has decided to accept this proposal from the Wargs. He decides to immediately draft the following message to Knight Isc. "I am most surprised at your acceptance of an alliance with the Warg nation. While it is technically not a violation of our agreement, it is most certainly a violation of the spirit of our agreement. I do understand the desire to remove the Solomani nation and thus speed our game up. However, I cannot fathom that this alliance with the Wargs is in either of our best interests. I am a man of my word and have no intention of violating any agreement that I have made, but I now have a new addition to our agreement. We agreed on a three turn notification for the end of our truce. I therefore state that should you decide to add so much as a one turn extension to your truce with the Wargs (which by my calculations currently goes through the end of turn 7) I would at that time invoke the three turn clause. Thus our alliance would end after turn 10 instead of turn 12. You are forewarned. If, however, you end this alliance with the Wargs as scheduled in turn 7, then I would be most happy to continue our alliance through turn 12 and probably further." Dragon Lord Gary IV then begins ordering troop movements. He first orders his griffin to take city 51 and pillage for 175 gold. Next, he sends his elemental over to the temple to be blessed by the gods. He then orders his elemental to remove the undesirable yellow apparition from the face of the earth, which the elemental is more than happy to do. The elemental then travels back to the friendly temple to gather up its stregnth for its next assault. Albert moves up and enters the Upper NW Flight ruin and encounters a Loafer. Actions this turn: Ghost overruns city 56 pillaging scout for 175gp. Elemental overruns city 55 pillaging scout for 175 gp. City 56 renamed Scop 56. City 55 renamed Tharse 55. Build production pegasi in Scop 56 for 2000. Build production spiders in Tharse 55 for 700. Diplomacy: To Knights Iskander: Given the state of your war preparations (ie vectoring all those units into attack position) and your ongoing plannings with White, it seems you intend me harm. Thus, your offer of a 3 turn truce appears to be merely a way of keeping me docile until your attack force is ready. A more robust offer of peace would have been better received. If I have misread the situation, please let me know. As it stands, however, I cannot accept such a truce proposal, and really don't need to, because, as I have said, there's pretty much nothing you can do to stop me from obtaining the southern gold right now anyway. Instead, I will observe your moves over the next couple of turns and determine what is the best course of action. It may indeed be that a truce would be to both our benefits, but that may depend on your answer to White's challenge. To Solomani: I see you need to concentrate your forces to the east, and, as much as I would like to run up there and pillage all those pegasi you are building, it's kind of far away and not worth the effort right now :) Therefore I will accept your offer of non-aggression. As I read it, we will not attack each others' cities or armies until turn 14 at the earliest (if you intended 10 turns to mean until Turn 10 let me know - that's OK with me too). So you will know and not take offense, I intend to take the eastern gold, (and the neutral city lying beside it on our border) with the hero I have moving that way. I doubt you will object since you appear to have other uses for your Heroes at the present time. It looks like Knights Isc had all weekend to take his turn and ample time to send out diplomacy and make plans to attack me, but not time to move the gamefile before this unexplained absence? Ah, well... I'm getting used to it now, enough complaining. Diplomacy: Solomani: I must insist on the rights to City 6 and the ruin beyond it. Although my hero can reach this ruin before yours, your wolfriders can reach the city before my forces and take it, an option you have attempted to leave open in the phrasing of your reply to me. I should find this most distressing, and must ask that you cede the rights to city 6 to me as a part of our treaty. Should you take City 6, I would consider it abrogation of the treaty and a declaration of war. (And I'm sure you do not wish to fight on two fronts). Knights Isc: It seems you are bent on your own destruction. I have made it abundantly clear on two occasions (the last two turn messages I wrote) exactly what I intended to do - march my Hero down to the Southern Gold and claim it for my treasury. Despite this, you insist on preparations for war, and now have begun posturing and delaying tactics with your diplomatic message and absence. Well, I will give you no guarantees for my actions at this point due to your reluctance to find a satisfactory way to appease me - truce or evidence of goodwill. In response to your query, I can assure you I will not attack you in Turn 4, as that has already passed for me. As for Turn 5, it will depend on your actions and demeanor. If you insist on war, then it is war you shall have, and you will regret your stance in a few short turns. In particular, razing my city would arouse my greatest ire and lead to your almost certain destruction. ------------------------------------------------ OK, enough of the heavy-handed demagoguery from me - let's get on with the game! :) Wargs -- Jon McCullers drhoo@memphisonline.com http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Ranch/9023/jon.htm _______________________________________________________________________________ The following message was sent on Tuesday March 31, 1998 at 06:17 AM EST by Michael Mifsud to all players; Wargs, If you can give me a solid reason to let you have it, sure. Of these, the only one that he bothers to devote very much time to is a very entertaining message from the Wargs. He decides that he likes the spirit and tenacity of the Warg nation and decides to issue the following message - "I was actually enjoying the 'heavy-handed demagoguery' as you put it. It is making this game a little more amusing than it has been so far. As the Knight Isc nation to my south seems to be exceedingly wishy-washy so far, and unwilling to commit himself to a course of action, I was thinking that there might be some sort of agreement that we might be able to come to. I have already voiced some of my concerns to the Knight Isc, and he seems to be in a delaying frame of mind. I am not sure exactly what an agreement between the two of us might consist of as I have not as of yet attempted to create any sort of diplomacy with the nation on the opposite corner from me in any previous game. I am definitely at war with the Solomani nation and he will shortly find out that his demise is eminent. Furthermore, the Knight Isc nation below me, in addition to not being able to commit himself, also seems to be perpetrating the continued slowness of this game which will irritate me to no end. In any case, I do not know that you would be interested in an arrangement. I just wanted to get the creative juices flowing should they be around...." To the Knight Isc he sends - "I have moved my griffin south to the temple. You will note that as part of our agreement, I moved him one space off of the temple to ensure free access. He will not be continuing south. He job is a little further north at this point. As you should have already seen, I have sent a diplomatic message to the Warg nation. Should he prove agreeable, you might see a three turn notification from me shortly. You have noone to blame but yourself for this. If you would commit yourself to a course of action instead of trying to play everyone to your advantage in such an obvious manner, you would find a much more binding agreement. Should the Warg nation not be interested, I would be interested in continuing our agreement through turn twelve as I do intend to focus on the Solomani nation at the moment. However, I do not see much use for it past that as you do not seem very reliable so far." Dragon Lord Gary IV then enters the Lower NW flight ruin and encounter the a member of the UN Militia which he dispatches with ease as the UN Militia are not much more than kiddy cops anyway, and picks up the Flight Item B. Had you done so, I would have killed your ghost and razed cities 41 and 57 on turn 5, then taken your devil and prepared a full assault on turn 6. Since you have wisely stayed within your borders, I shall continue on my avowed course to continue scouring the nearby ruins. However, I shall also continue to watch you closely in an attempt to decide whether you truly deserve to live or should be extirpated as common vermin. Moving your turn on faster would probably elevate you above the level of vermin in my book. :P To Gary Dragon Guy: I think an alliance of convenience to assist each other in the elimination of the yellow and blue stains on the map would be a splendid idea. After all, we have them surrounded, no? I doubt any formal treaties will be necessary as we are unlikely to come into much in the way of direct conflict in a mere 20 turn game, but it wouldn't hurt to openly plot together towards yellow and blue's demise (and it would probably be pretty fun). I may have a more concrete suggestion for you after my next turn, at which time (if I am reading your movements correctly) we may have need of some diplomatic contact. Do you think that having 2 enemies from 2 your borders will increase victory chances to you? Are we just playing games for fun? Or do we want to increase our warlords skills? Now I see that I have chosen wrong diplomacy behaviour. Probably, the problem is my short messages and some of my timeouts. I should have expained to you my actions with Wargs. I thought that it was CLEAR to understand. I was wrong. I think that now you'll see what's going on. As for my timeouts: as I wrote first I was waiting for the answer of Wargs and then I WAS REALLY BUSY. My first rule in diplomacy is - RESPECT for my alliaces and enemies. I don't like style of messages from Wargs. I don't like Warg's phrases like: "I shall also continue to watch you closely in an attempt to decide whether you truly deserve to live or should be extirpated as common vermin". So, I'm asking you to wait with breaking our alliance. Don't make a mistake. Beleave me, now we have real chances to get as much as 50% of the map for each other (just look at map). Best wishes Knight Isc To Wargs: As you can see from above I don't like your diplomacy messages style. It's too haughty. I won't say anything offensive to you and I'm counting on changing of your mesasages style. Prepare to war. He orders his pegasas to team up with a catapult and a heavy infantry unit which were hangin out in the water waiting for this opportunity and destroy the Solomani elemental and useless worlfiders sitting in a city which Solomani should never have wasted his time (or money - thanks for the pegasi production, it helps increase the war funds) taking. After this short and decisive battle, Dragon Lord Gary IV orders the city renamed from Solomani 14 to 14 Goodbye to S. He then purchases spiders for the city to begin producing. Next he orders his ghost to pick off the last of the remaining ten cities within his quartile of the board. The ghost is more than happy to oblige, and scares the life right out of the ridiculous scout that had been guarding it. Finally, Dragon Lord Gary IV gets around to his mail. He has received a couple more diplomatic messages which he needs to respond to. First he writes to Knight Isc: "As a matter of fact, yes I am indeed playing this game for fun. As far as increasing my warlords skill, I have actually done that as well. This tournament has definitely honed my Warlords skills better than anything I have had the opportunity of doing in the past. However, that is not my objective. My objective is to win!!! and to (yes) have >fun< doing it. I agree that your diplomatic play so far has not been to my satisfaction. Furthermore, respect is fine and should be had between players before or after the game. However, during the game and within the turn reports and other diplomatic messages you are acting a role - I am doing that right now. Psychological warfare is often times as effective as the actual battles. Therefore, I have been enjoying the Wargs diplomatic messages very much. So far, he has proven more reliable than you; more ruthless, yes, but that is fine with me. Because of the fact that I am currently focused on the Solomani nation and you are right on my other boarder, it is more to my advantage currently to have an agreement with you than with the Warg nation. Am I afraid to have a war on two fronts??? - no. That being the case, I am willing to continue our agreement tentatively through turn twelve and possibly beyond. However, by the time turn twelve rolls around, I expect to be fairly bored with finishing off the remnants of the Solomani nation. As that time draws nearer and I look for where I would like to next focus my forces, I will begin to determine whether you or the Warg nation (or neither) would make a better ally to go forward with. Remember, actions speak louder than words. Oh, and one more thing, I intend to have more than 50% of the map." To the Warg nation: "As you have read above, I am tentatively continuing with my agreement with the Knight Isc. However, his actions will determine how much longer that will last. I am leaving open the possibilities for turn thirteen and beyond. I like your style and look forward to hearing from you in the future. As you said, we are really too far away currently to need any diplomacy anyway. However, that might not last long...." ______________________________________________________________________ Report for tournament Round B, Game 23, Turn 6, Side 1 Amount of gold at beginning of turn - 5,467 Pegasus, etc. attacks Solomani 14 and loots 25 gold and pillages 1000 gold. I probably would have been less 'arrogant' if you had been upfront about the poorly disguised and rather simplistic invasion you have been organizing since turn 2, instead of dissembling and delaying, thinking I couldn't see exactly what you were doing. As for your 'emergency' game suspension, it may not be against the round B rules to request a game suspension because you were 'waiting for the answer of Wargs' as you put it, but it is certainly against the spirit of the competition to misuse the system to accrue an advantage in the game in this manner (not to mention we're already the slowest game in Round B). (In Character): I see by your cowardly actions that you are indeed vermin as I had suspected. I will be forced to wipe you from the face of the globe unless you return to more peaceful pursuits and turn your forces elsewhere. To Gary IV: Sorry to hear you are too occupied right now to join me in a quest to attain supremacy of the world. However, should you reconsider, Blue's forces will either be dead or quite well occupied for the foreseeable future, affording you a unique opportunity to expand your empire south. Happy hunting! He is very pleased with what he sees. He begins to whistle a very merry little tune and decides to allow everyone an extra hour of sleep this morning and goes swimming in the water. When he is done, he summons his wyvern to give him the morning report. His wyvern reports that the glorious mate of Albert is standing outside of city 52 Spider Hell requesting the privilege of joining his marvelous troop for 1240 gold pieces. Dragon Lord Gary IV is more than happy to pay that price for her wonderful services and sends another wyvern off to deliver the message. Alberta immediately runs off to the NW devil ruin and picks up a devil to add to the troops. Dragon Lord Gary IV then heads over to the NW Demon ruin and picks up a demon to join the forces. He then orders his griffin in the center to fly over and take cities 61 and 65. Next he orders his pegasus down south to fly over and remove a pesky bat who was flying uselessly around down there. The pegasus swoops in and rips the bats head off. Finally, he orders Albert to take out Solomani. Albert is more than happy to carry out these instructions. He flies over with his archon and picks up a powerful griffin and attacks the pitiful forces that Solomani had with him defending Solomani 21. Unfortunately, during the battle, the griffin was hit by a lucky shot and killed, but that price was well worth the effort of removing the vile and pathetic Solomani from his pitiful existence. The white forces everywhere send up a cheer for the death of Solomani and Dragon Lord Gary IV sends out permission to everyone to violate their curfew and partake of a large supply of beverages that he orders delivered to the troops. He sends out a message to everyone "Keep up the good work. Step 1 has been accomplished, but there is much left to do!" Dragon Lord Gary IV then sends a message to the Warg nation. "I presume that elemental army you have on the outskirts of the middle of the board will be heading south. I assume that you recognize that should they happen to move north instead, first they will not live long, and second, you will be eliminating the possibility of any future agreements that might have taken place." ______________________________________________________________________ Report for tournament Round B, Game 23, Turn 7, Side 1 Amount of gold at beginning of turn - 5,495 Alberta emerges in city 52 Spider Hell Alberta enters NW devil and picks up a devil Gary IV enters NW demon and picks up a demon Griffin takes city 61 and pillages for 350 gold. He is most displeased by the fact that the coward Solmani's troops which come forthwith will be at enhanced stregnth. This new situation causes him to drastically rethink his strategy for the game. He decides to compose a letter to the Knight Isc. "Knight Isc - There are as I see it two basic options that we may go forward with at this point. I now have a defunct enemy on my eastern border that I may either go after or not without worry of any retaliation. That being the case, I could potentially move my attack forces from my eastern border to my southern border quickly and effectively and begin an attack on you which would be most detrimental as you would have two borders to defend while red and I would both have one. Because we are currently allies, I am giving you the option of continuing that alliance further instead of the aforementioned relocation of my forces. This option would entail us extending our alliance through turn 15 as opposed to the current turn 12. It also means that as I am the one who forced yellow out of the game in the cowardly fashion that he pursued, I feel that I am entitled to the two remaining allie ruins which are located in yellow's territory. I noticed that you positioned a hero to get to at least one of those ruins before I could. That would be unacceptable in this alternative. Should you move that hero further north and take either ruin or one of yellow's cities, our alliance would be at an end. Because of these new conditions, I am willing to allow you to have the city 8 which we currently have left as a neutral city. I feel like that is more than adequate compensation for what I am demanding. If you choose not to continue our alliance, the three turn provision would officially begin with this turn - turn 8 and therefore last through turn 10. We would in this situation officially be at war beginning turn 11. I urge you to seriously consider continuing our alliance through turn 15 as I have structured above. Should you not choose that alternative, you will regret it as yellow has already. I am very serious about you not moving that hero any further north. I will not break our alliance as it currently stands should you move that hero into what was yellow's territory, but it will absolutely end our alliance effective at the end of turn ten and we will be at war at that point." Dragon Lord Gary IV then sends a griffin to take city 62 and pillages for 350 gold. Gary IV then enters NW worm and picks up a giant worm to add to his forces. He gets up and walks out of the tent to find a large group of his forces outside with a big banner cangratulating him on his promotion. Please by the beginning of the day, he looks around and issues this day's orders. Albert picks of the cities Solomani 25 and Solomani 22 with very little difficulty. Alberta visits the northern temple and gets blessed. While she was there, a vision appeared to her - "The mighty gods have called upon you to seek out enemy cities and sack and pillage some gold from them. Should you carry out this mission, you will be well rewarded." Having been called upon, and since she planned to do that anyway, she bravely marches forth on her mission. The two new aquisitions are then more appropriately named and purchases for them completed before the end of the day. ______________________________________________________________________ Report for tournament Round B, Game 23, Turn 9, Side 1 Amount of gold at beginning of turn - 1,176 Gary IV gets promoted to level 2 Albert attacks Somolani 25 and loots 29 gold and pillages 225 gold WarBOT beta 8 Armyset: Tournament b1-4 WL version: PC Deluxe Intense Combat: Off Terrain: Enemy city 0,1,2 prod Hero Bonuses Non- For- TOTAL Minus Fly Natural Item Hero tify City Cancel BONUS Enemy Item -------------------------------------------------------------- ATT: 1 3 1 0 H *5* 0 Yes DEF: 0 0 0 0 1 *1* 0 No Entered Final Attack Units: Strength Strength Survival % --------------- -------- -------- ---------- *Hero 5 10 0.88573 <-- Lives! He reads the report from the Knight Isc with shock and dismay. "Does he think I'm stupid?" he thinks. He composes the following reply while slowly ripping the knife out from his back. "Knight Isc - That's it! I have now had it with your wishy washy undecided bahavior. As a Warlord, I had expected that you would make an alliance and keep it for the duration without sending out such backstabbing, unwarlordlike messages to the opposition in an obvious effort to undermine me and our alliance. Well, now you have it. Our alliance is over. You have your three turn warning - when I give my word, I keep it. Turns 10-12 we are at a state of truce. Beginning in turn 13, I officially declare war with you. I recommend that you are prepared, as I do not expect you to live very long." To the Warg nation, he sends the following "Who's the more vermin. The vermin or the vermin who follows it? I assume that you would like to join me in the destruction of the Knight Isc. I likewise assume that you are capable of surviving these next three turns while I am in a state of truce with the vermin. He will need everything he can get his hands on to survive my onslaught, so that should put you in a pretty good position to get some of your territory back. In any case, I look forward to hearing from you." Meanwhile, in another part of the world, Albert just got promoted to level 2. Dragon Lord Gary IV sends his congratulations. He then orders Alberta to enter the NE Worm ruin and pick up the giant worm who is waiting there. Dragon Lord Gary IV then wanders over to the North Temple to get the blessing of the gods. Finally, the newly promoted Albert attacks another of the slacker Solomani cities and is, of course, successful. I have no intention of allowing you to keep up with me and had no obligation under our agreement to do so. Furthermore, should I ever run into a situation where I am allied with someone who is doing better than me you would not see me 1) send out messages to the warlords we are allied against in the backstabbing manner that you did, or 2) whine like a baby like you are now, that (whaaa!!) Knight Isc diplomacy messages: To Dragon Lord Gary IV: I was not willing to destroy our truce although the qucik death of Yellow warlord made my situation very unstable. A weak player on a map is a huge advantage to those warlords whose territories adjoin to his own territory. The weak player was Yellow player. I was just saying compliments to the excellent move of my enemy. But I make no secret of it, the situation we have now is very unstable and dangerous for me and Wargs, of course. Because we are killing tons of men of each other while your armies conquer a huge territory without any losses and as you saw we are burning our cities and the two of us are getting weaker than you alone. If the situation stays the same you'll destroy me and Wargs because we'll be too weak after our terrible battles. I see that you understood everything of it before, but things are getting worse with every turn. There was only one situation in which we could extend our truce: if strength Wargs were equal to the strength of Solomani. But it's not so. Wargs are powerful enemy - it's a fact not compliment. If I'll be able to destroy his forces I will meet your forces that will be much more powerfull then mine, it's obvious. You should have proposed something to me for making our situation well balanced. You haven't done this. And I think you understand that if we'll start alliance with Wargs right now - we'll destroy you till the end of turn 20. Anyway, you have broken our truce first. Knight Isc To Wargs: I offer to you to join our forces and to start war with Dragon Lord Gary IV at turn 13th. Together we have much more strength then he has now. I can give you the word that I won't attack you untill the end of the Round B (if you won't break our truce). More then that: I offer to you 50%-50% of territory agreement. Dragon Lord Gary IV has an advantage and he's willing to use it without any shame. As I noticed, he should have proposed something to his ally in order to keep balance. He just have broken the truce (then it becomes out of sense). If you won't agree with my proposal - I'm sorry, but I'll be forced to demolish your nation in self-destroying manner. I think, we'll die together then (you are die hard...). Otherwise we'll have 40%-40% at least, beleave me. Now, make coffins ready to your heroes and be prepared to turn 13. Do not cross my border and do not stay on a separation line - otherwise I'll be forced to kill trespassers. It's clear that he is standing on the edge of his grave and we just need to push him slightly. As for 50%50 - let's discuss it at turn 15 (when we have white guy beaten).
