I look forward to a spirited competition. You will find me quite willing to engage in reasonable discussions over the affairs of the world. I don't hold with the "attack everyone in all directions" philosophy. I am quite willing to seek agreements and deal honorably with my opponents. Today, in fulfillment of the ancient prophecy, Prospero awoke. The Red Death had infiltrated the hearts and minds of all the world for generations, and they had grown decadent and weak. Today began the cycle of purification, when the White Light would shine out and destroy all shadow. The Prophecy tells that the masses, sick with the Red Death, will resist the Light. But they are weak, and will easily be subdued. The Prophecy also tells of others, false prophets, who will seek to replace the Red Death with their own pestilence of the spirit. These, the Prophecy tells, will be the more dangerous. But in the end, speaks the Prophecy, the White Light will hold illimitable dominion over all. Prospero emerges in City 01 City 01 renamed The Abbey The time had come to gather the allies. Prospero visited the ancient family catacombs and spoke the incantation that gave tangible form to the spirits of his ancestors. Prospero finds an Elemental at NW Elemental Prospero finds a Ghost at NW Ghost "Go! Seek and destroy the Red Death where it can be found! Then let this begin according to the events of our time and not according to the cunning of Boyan. For he, Boyan the Seer, when composing a song to someone, soared in his thoughts over the tree (of wisdom), ran as agrey wolf over the land, flew below the clouds as a blue-grey eagle. When he recalled the feuds of former times he would let loose ten falcons upon a flock of swans. And the first swan overtaken was the first to sing a song to old Iaroslav, to brave Mstislav, who slew Rededia before the Kasog regiments, and to handsome Roman, son of Sviatoslav. Boyan, however, did not let loose ten falcons upon the flock of swans. But rather he lay his wise fingers upon the living strings and they sounded lauds to the princes. Let us begin this narration, brethren, from the old times of Vladimir to this present time of lgor, who strengthened his mind with courage, who quickened his heart with valour and, thus imbued with martial spirit, led his valiant regiments against the Kuman land in defence of the Russian land." It was not the first time when he was summoned by desperate people who needed someone to protect their land from mighty enemies (and somehow these people always were sure that only Finist can help them, the legendary hero whose deeds are known by two first volumes of Falcon's Chronicles - "P22 or Finist, the Young Years" and "P38 or Training of Sineglazka" - although Finist made only a guest appearance in the second one). But this time the information that these people tried to feed him did not make much sense, so mixed up everything was. According to them, (1) - the Prophets of White Light lived to the North and gathered armies to fight mysterious Red Death - and as noone in SouthWest knew what this Red Death is, they were afraid that the Prophets are simply going to slain everybody under this pretence of fighting Red Death, (2) - the people in Red Clothes (could they be that Red Death that Whites are going to fight) led by a Brother Bruce Leroy (who surprisingly resembled a girl [could it be that something is simply wrong with my gamefile? -Andrey] ) lived to the East, (3) the land of Russian Knyaz Igor, son of Sviatoslav, lied to the NorthEast. This name sounded familiar, and Finist pondered whether it really could be that reckless but brave Igor who led much-advertised, but ill-ended campaign against Polovtsy, was captured, escaped, and later, possibly, found his way to this world (?). And now Finist was expected to do something. "Hmm, are you sure that someone is going to attack us?" - he asked. They were *absolutely* sure. They were also *absolutely* sure that war should be the occupation of the real heroes "like you, our Lord!", and not of the general public. Finist sighed. Finist listened. Finist looked at city militia. Finist agreed that the best they can do is go home, and let him take care about the situation. And in the night Finist went from the city to the mountains, were noone could see what he is doing, and noone knew what he is doing, but then the lights lighted up the mountains tops and Fire Elemental came from there, and without stop he went farther in the direction of the ancient Dwarven Keep. And in another hour the people saw the Ghost, slowly flying from the mountains, and they become afraid, as they were sure that it was the ghost of Finist, who was undoubtfully slained by furious Fire Elemental, and thus all hopes were lost... ************************************************************************** Start: 1 city, 13039 gold, 64 income, 25 expenses The hero Finist came to city 04, disbanded scout and renamed the city to "Stolitsa". It seems that all of us sent our Elementals counter-clockwise, and so will each get a border city. There was a slight error in your turn report, however. Your report claims that you bought Spider production in 05 Vyshgorod, when the turn file indicates Heavy Infantry production. It is not a big deal for me, but you might want to be more careful so that the game record is not inaccurate. I notice that you have several powerful units deployed on our border. This being Warlords, I assume they have hostile intent. I would rather spend the next couple of turns consolidating my fragile new collective than leaping directly into conflict, but rest assured that I am prepared to meet any aggression with appropriate force. To Falcon: Your last turn report indicated that your Elders believe there are enemies closing in from the north. As you can see, my Elemental has business elsewhere, now that my one border city has been secured. I have built Heavy Infantry, which are long on defense and short on offense. I hope that we both can turn our attentions to other fronts, and keep offensive stacks away from the border near Raven(08). To Lord Dread: a.k.a. the Last Dragon? Let's hope that our eastern neighbour, Lord Dread, will also see that his armies have better chances to successfully attack North than West. On the back of his Griffin, Finist arrived to SW Command place and found the Command Item there. It allowed him to observe the whole land and read the messages that the other warlords send to each other: >From Mohtressor to Sir Uriah: >I notice that you have several powerful units deployed on our border. >This being Warlords, I assume they have hostile intent. "Smart guy", Finist smiled ironically. >I would rather spend the next couple of turns consolidating my fragile >new collective than leaping directly into conflict, "Oh, I'm sure he would", Finist thought. >but rest assured that I am prepared to meet any aggression with >appropriate force. Finist looked at the map... and could not find any appropriate force. It seemed to him that Dupin will be lost by Montressor no matter what, and without a chance to get it back. Will Montressor raze his own city to prevent Sir Uriah from gaining griffins for free? Only the time will tell. "Well, it's their war", Finist thought. "I have my own problems to keep me busy. At least it really seems that we don't have to worry about attack from North at the moment, as they need all armies on the "yellow" border." But he still send the ghost there, as he knew that enemies' elementals are so swift and so untrustworthy... Dwarf showed to Sineglazka the secret dwarven path through the hills to the ancient ruin where she found Flight Item - and now she did not need dwarf's help to get out from these hills. Among other interesting and important events we'll mention that elves from Blue Havens decided to join our cause, and that the Guardtowers were build on our borders, hopefully they will be strong enough to repel any aggressions of those who won't believe in the "Enchanted Land" rumors. Start: 6 cities, 5666 gold, 256 income, 40 expenses. Finist found Command Item D in SW Command, Sineglazka found Flight Item H in Lower SW Flight. You are able to take Dupin(14), pillage and/or raze it if you wish. I think you will find you can not hold it. I also notice that Red has a hero, a demon and a devil on your sparsely defended southern border. I offer you a deal. Spare Dupin(14) and its current production, and I will in return: 1) Allow you to take the gold in the Northern Gold ruin, which will be more than the 850g you would get for pillaging my Griffins. 2) Conclude a non-aggression pact with you, whereby I shall not attack you and you shall not attack me until turn 8, or longer if you wish. This should allow you to concentrate on your southern border or the center of the board if you like. I have learned one thing from the first round, and that is that two-front wars make for last-place finishes. I hope you will consider my offer, and avoid putting yourself in a two-front war over a quick 850g. In any case, your actions this turn will let me know which choice you have made. If you accept my offer, you will find that I am true to my word. To Lord Dread: A poor choice of initial movements, and an underestimation of Sir Uriah's aggression has put me in a bad position on my eastern front, much to your benefit, I think. If Sir Uriah rejects my offer above, I will be most interested in coordinating attacks with you. I believe I will be able to tie up at least one hero, his devil, his archon, his elemental and his Griffins, which he has chosen to vector to my front. If you come up strong, as you seem to be doing, he will not be well equipped to defend against you. I will raze my cities rather than allow him to take one that he can hold, so he will not gain much from attacking me. If he does choose to take me up on my offer, which I have unfortunately been forced to make, then I must keep my word and lay off until at least turn 8. To Falcon: It is said that Dwarven wit is like their hammers; heavy and blunt. It is good that I can count on Finist to dispel any overly-optimistic illusions I might have about my situation. In answer to his questions: No, I think I will let Sir Uriah raze Dupin if he believes it is in his long-term interests to do so. One would hope he is not willing to enter into a two-front war just to make 850g. A re-examination of the situation will show that he certainly can't hold it long enough to take advantage of the griffin production, so he will either pillage it and/or raze it, or leave it alone. As for Finist's assessments of my "appropriate force". True the forces there are not enough to advance into Yellow territory, or indeed to do much more than a controlled retreat. Such was the result of my more diffused opening versus Yellow's "go right for the throat" opening. Fortunately for me, Brother Leroy seems to be taking advantage of Yuri's strong westward movement, and I do not expect to lose more than two or three cities before Yuri's heartland is threatened. We will see. In any case, you seem to have a no-front war on your hands. Congratulations. Long-term, you are probably the most dangerous of all. Finally the glow of dawn faded. Mist enveloped the prairie. The song of the nightingale had died out. The daws have begun to caw. Russian warriors barred the wide prairie with their crimson shields. They seek honour for themselves and glory for their prince. Early in the morning of Friday the Russians trampled the infidel Kuman armies, and, spreading like arrows over the prairie, they galloped away with beautiful Kuman maidens. And with them they took: gold and brocades, and costly velvets. With cloaks and coats and fur mantles and with all kinds of Kuman garments they began to bridge their way over the swarnps and marshes. The crimson banner, the white gonfalon, the scarlet panache, and the silver lance were taken to brave Igor, son of Sviatoslav. Brave Oleg's clan slumbers in the prairie. They have strayed far, flying. They were born to be offended neither by the falcon, nor by the gyrfalcon, nor by you, the black ravens, the infidel Kumans. Khan Gza flees like a grey wolf. Sure. > And what's about "until Turn 8 nonagression pact" between us? :) Isn't it amusing when warlords (Montressor first, Sir Uriah now), seeing that they have only a ghost against the attacking hero with mighty allies (devil, demon...) propose "several turns nonagression pact" until they will bring enforcements (yellow archon and a hero are already on their way to south)? It was not a surprise that Sir Uriah rejected Montressor's offer. What will Lord Dread do? Especially taking into account that Sir Uriah made his offer while razing the city which Lord Dread would have otherwise, and seeing the yellow ghost crossing the border with red... > I don't mean to offend you, lord of Blue, but the Finist's avarice > for cities is wellknown. (see P-round archive for more information) :) Of course the same P-round archives show that although Falcon did finish first among whites, Sir Uriah was the second one :). Sir Uriah, don't show false modesty ;) ! And they pulled first and second in the practice round. Not a good situation... To Sir Uriah: Contrary to your assertion, I don't regret leaving Dupin(14) standing last turn. I thought diplomacy was worth trying. However, you obviously feel that you have more to gain in fighting on two fronts. We will see in the end whether you are correct or not. And please don't insult my intelligence or my honor by claiming your Spider's presence was mere "impery". You were set up to take Dupin(14) by force, while ignoring my calls for discussion of border cities. I grant that my opening strategy was poorly chosen, but I did not have the benefit of knowing which way everyone would be going. It seems that you were able to repel the aggressor - my congratulations! (At least for time being, as your cities are still the nearest target for his questing hero, so I think he will be back very soon as he promises). > I assure you I have absolutely no intention of provoking a war with you. > One front is plenty for me. In fact, it would help me significantly if > our border could be somewhat demilitarized, so that I can deploy more > units to fight Yellow, rather than keep them behind to defend against > you. The demon will definitely be going to fight Yellow, unless some > dishonorable action on your part makes you a greater enemy. As Sir Uriah pointed (and as I could see even without his help :p ), I can take one of your cities without problems right now. My spider will die, but the city can be pillaged and razed (I cannot hold it). It would be the best defense against your armies, undoubtfully, as you would not be able to vector armies to your (razed) city near the temple. I will appreciate if you will give me several good reasons why I should not do it (before my turn is due). You know, something like "I will not vector armies to Luchesi(51), my hero is not going to fly to the temple" and so on. You can see that I can reach these results by less subtle means (spider+elemental attack from bridge, elemental retreats, you cannot kill him), but if you really want to keep this city, I can leave it to you, but I want some reward for it. I don't want a war, but if the best way to avoid it is razing one or two of your cities, I can do it. To Lord of Dread (with his messenger returning home): Seeing that Sir Uriah still proposes you peace only for two turns, I think that your hero/griffins/devil etc are more needed on northern border. I'm ready to remove my hero/devil/demon also. You can see that I already started moving demon North, and my other strongest armies are going to follow him, but you also can see that I can make a hero/devil/demon/elephant stack very soon in case if you prefer to fight me. I don't propose a peace until Turn 20, as we don't know what may happen in a far future, but I don't want funny two-turns treaty either. Let's make it for at least 5 turns, or maybe even longer if you wish. I decided to take a risk, so I did not kill your pikeman with my elemental (I could safely retreat him after that), and now my pikeman can be killed by you, but I interpreted your message as a wish of peace between us, and I hope that I was right. In this moment you're controlling Eastern Temple, I hope to control the Western one. I think it will be only mutually beneficial for us to share Southern Temple instead of fighting for it, as we have a chance to increase the total strength of both our armies instead of decreasing it. But, again, my devil+demon are ready to fight for temple, if you prefer it. My elephant is not on a sight-seeing tour, he is on diplomatic mission :). In other words, I hoped that chances for your accepting of my proposal would be higher if you knew that I'm ready to fight and my borders would not look attractively for you. Concerning our central cities. I took 63, you will have 64 now. 65 and 66 are too valuable for one person to have them without all other warlords becoming jealous, so I propose to divide them between us, and not fight each other on central island even if my first proposal will be declined by you, as I would hate to see these six beautiful cities in ruins. Falcon _______________________________________________________________________________ The following message was sent on Wednesday April 08, 1998 at 08:24 AM EDT by Yuri Khvorostjanov to all players; This is a diplomatic message from Sir Uriah. 1) I don't ask to restore my timeout, but I'm sure, that I sent my turn in time. But > if you took it seriously, I stay for my word, and we do have nonagression > pact until Turn 8 After your explanation it sounds almost as offence, my dear Falcon. I don't interested in peace on those conditions (for two turns etc.). (just don't leave your cities *completely* empty, and > don't move your armies to my "quarter", and I'll not go into your > "quarter" eather). Ok, I just read whole your message. Did you wanna insulte me? Ok, you did. #%$#^% $^&%^&*&! Welcome to my quarter! Attack me, if you can! > To Montressor: > > How shall I respond to this prediction? And this is the only true. As for my Ghost & spiders, milord, it used to protect my hinterland from red invasion (by the contrattcking threat) and no more, I won't attack you first. Is it possible to do?! :) Beleive me, he's trying to fools you, milord. Moreover, I can say that cities 65 and 66 will be the cities only until my next turn. If my diplomacy failured, I'm going to mercylessly raze both of them. That's why they can't be the objectives of your deal with our "feathery friend". Of course, I can change my mind. And it depends on our relations in the first place. > and not fight > each other on central island even if my first proposal will be declined by > you, as I would hate to see these six beautiful cities in ruins. He really want it and put me in desperate situation. I said all. Now, it's your choice: who will be your ally and who will be your foe. Regards, S.U. _______________________________________________________________________________ The following message was sent on Wednesday April 08, 1998 at 02:20 PM EDT by rdarco@nyseg.com to all players; From: Bob Arco@NYSEG on 04/08/98 01:58 PM Prospero's Diary: Day 5. Sir Uriah's attack has been repelled. Hooray! He warns he may be back soon, however. He also keeps pressing Lord Dread for peace. Meanwhile, Falcon is also trying to make peace with Lord Dread and is asking me for reasons why he shouldn't attack me. What is it about me that makes everyone want to attack me? What is it about Brother Leroy that makes everybody want to make peace with him? Could it be that he is truly the Master? To all: I wish to apologize if the tone of my diplomacy has expressed that I am taking this game or your actions personally. Although I admit that I feel that I have more invested in this game than in a table-top game played during the evening, I do not take any of your attacks, verbal or military, personally. My tone is partly the result of my chosen game persona (the crusading knight), and a bit of frustration with the opportunistic attacks that people have been making. In games with diplomatic aspects, I generally don't engage in opportunistic attacks. When I attack, and therefore make an enemy of one of my neighbors, I try to make sure that I am prepared to see it through to the end. I don't attack just to take (or raze) an enemy city for the sake of annoying my opponent. A wounded animal is much more dangerous, you know, and you shouldn't turn your back on one. I am sure you would all agree that it is much easier to do well in this game if you only have one front to worry about. So no offense meant and no (real)offense taken, OK? To Falcon: For several turns you have stated that you do not want a war with me, so I am somewhat confused as to why I must now give you reasons why you should not raze Luchesi(51). If you raze Luchesi, we will be at war, and you will have proven that your words of peace are only good if the other person has superior force. You keep making statements as if I were about to march into your territory, and that you are only acting defensively. This is clearly not the case. Meanwhile, you are making overtures of peace with Lord Dread, when he has many offensive units on your border. You even wish to share the southern temple with him, while insisting that I not use the one on our border. My position is this: I am not currently at war with you, and do not wish to go to war with you until my current war is over and Yellow is no more, which may take until the end of the round. I will not vector armies into Luchesi unless it benefits the war with Yellow (I cannot think how). It is definitely in your best interests to ally with me. Both of us could concentrate on our other neighbors, and only worry about each other when it is down to the two of us. This is a bit more than a two-turn non-aggression pact. Under a non-aggression pact, I cannot guarantee that I will not vector or keep forces near our border, and I would like to be able to use the Western Temple. I only state that, if we come to this agreement, I will not attack you until Yellow is destroyed, and possibly not even then. Since I don't engage in opportunistic attacks, and dutifully keep my word, you would do very well with me as an ally. If you do raze Luchesi, I will attempt to come to whatever agreement I can with Sir Uriah and attack you with everything I can muster. To use his words, I might still "oversalt", but in your direction. I do not mean this as a threat, simply a clear expression of my intentions. If both of you continue to attack me, and it seems I am destined to lose, I will focus my attacks (and my defense) on the one who has behaved the most dishonorably, and help Lord Dread where I can. As the loser, I will in some way be able to determine the ultimate winner. In summary: If you stick to your word, we could expand our current arrangement and both do very well. Break your word, and I might go down, but I'll try like hell to take you with me. Your choice. To Sir Uriah: I understand your motivations for razing Dupin(14), though I cannot say that I agree with them. You certainly did not have the forces to finish me off, and you had an enemy encroaching on your southern border. Perhaps you thought you could cripple me with one stroke, and I must admit you almost did. In any case, we are at war, and our war must continue until one of us is gone. However, if Falcon attacks me now, after many turns of talking peace, I would consider that a deeper betrayal and might be interested in making a deal with you, the lesser of two evils, so to speak. To Lord Dread: Leroy, have you found out who is the Master yet? Seems everyone wants to be your friend. Watch the words and deeds of Falcon carefully. They may not always match up. _______________________________________________________________________________ The following message was sent on Wednesday April 08, 1998 at 05:14 PM EDT by Alex Vickers to all players; A piercing cry toward the center land erupted from the night, and as quickly as it was voiced, there was silence. Word has been sent from the other gangs and we *must* ad..." "No," Leroy calmly cut in. "We mustn't do anything, but that which benefits our home, brother. Let us walk, and decide our fate, the fate of our land this night." Leroy and Shogun sat down, with their backs toward the South and East, knowing that there was the only safety in the world. "Shogun, that is not the way," interrupted Bruce Leroy. "I am already upset by your orders to attack. If anything we send regrets. We do not hate our neighbours to the West. "'Please, Bear, I need to get to the other side. May I ride on your neck? I will not sting you, for if I do, I will drown as well.' 'This is true. I will take you the other side, Scorpion.' Sineglazka was not in her best mood. She had good reasons for it. Lord Dread, after sending messengers with the nice words about "laying our swords down to parley" and that his razing of 07 was "not a hostile intent", as it was caused only by the fact that "an environment has not been defined" and so he "had to plan for the worst", treacherously killed the pikemen troop - and he did it during the parley, moreover, he did it when an environment was clearly defined, when his peace offer was accepted, and when "blue" armies were sent away from the eastern border. Worse, the shameless warlord was impudent enough as to say that these actions were caused only by the fact that Falcon had plans to betray his ally and was just looking for opportunity to strike! Yes, Falcon who already started to demilitarize his eastern border! Inconceivable, as Vizzini would say. But of course Lord Dread knows a lot about betrayals, as his actions toward those who chose to trust him show. He acted exactly as the Scorpion in his parable. With the only exception - the Scorpion at least was brave enough to take responsibility for his actions, whereas those "heroes" of Lord Dread were still trying to hide behind the words that the killing were done by "their men, who acted foolishly, who have yet to learn to master themselves", in short, who did it by their own initiative, without orders. "But then, what could one expect from those nigger and hermaphrodit?" - Sineglazka thought. (Yes, it was politically incorrect thought. She had even more politically incorrect thoughts about the nature of relations between Shogun and Bruce, but we will not cite those thoughts here, as they are definitely not ladylike and our game is not X-rated). "What they will do next? Undoubtfully, Bruce will make a sensation from himself in the SE Woods Nudists Camp where he is going to..." And there were the rumors that Lord Dread's messenger, the one who spent a few days in (41) East-Tower waiting for Falcon's reply, was killed (weaponless) by Bruce Leroy himself, because the youth tried to convince the people of the Red Land that Falcon is the noblest warlord and all accusations against him are false... To Montressor: Your Luchesi(51) stays. Moreover, it's not even pillaged. Your flags are flying proudly above its walls. I was satisfied with your words that you will not vector armies to Luchesi unless it benefits the war with Yellow. Your hero may visit Western Temple, I did not leave any armies inside the Temple. I hope that your hero is not going to get a quest "sack or pillage 1000 gold from your southern neighbour" there, that your armies are not going to block the temple and that I won't pay for my political naivete once again. Rereading all my previous messages, I still don't see that I've ever said that I will never attack you, thus I believe that I was free to take Luchesi. Yes, I was sad to see your troubles in East which happened so soon, and it was not interesting for me to attack you at that time with all my might, as the result of these two combinated attacks was very clear, but I saw that Sir Uriah retreated on his last turn, and I was not sure what you're going to do in these new conditions, that's why I wanted to hear your guarantees that you're not going to move into my land now, when your eastern border is relatively safe. (Besides, from the very beginning your words about me were not peaceful - >Long-term, you are probably the most dangerous of all. >Unfortunately, there is little I can do about that right now, if ever.) Still, although I removed some of my armies from your border and stopped vectoring my new armies there (to demilitarize the border a little bit), I'm afraid that I'll reject your peace offer at this time, or, better to say, I'll postpone my decision for one turn. In any case, I promise not to cross the border between us on the next turn, and I expect the same from you (but I want you to understand that I can violate our border later, unless we will make more serious pact before it). I think that alliance between our nations is very possible, but I want to wait one turn to see how agressively Sir Uriah and Lord Dread are going to act. No matter what is going to happen between us, I'm sure that you will never be the primary target for my armies, as this position seems to be firmly occupied by another warlord (L.D.) who offended me deeply. > Meanwhile, you are making overtures of peace with Lord Dread, when he > has many offensive units on your border. It wasn't me who started these "overtures of peace". You might remember that I never had any talks about peace with him until his last turn "parley offer" which he immediately violated himself. Being of peaceful nature I accepted it - yes, I was stupid :(. :(. :(. $#*%! Hopefully, warlords in future battles (once Round B is over) will know him better. To Sir Uriah: I was very disappointed by your interpretation of my last message :(. Maybe I was not stating it clear last time: I saw no sense in talking about short peace treaties between us, as we had no common interests, and thus, obviously, had no reasons to battle each other, and had no place to battle each other - no special peace treaties were needed, I believed. I was not going to attack you, but now, after your > #%$#^% $^&%^&*&! > Welcome to my quarter! Attack me, if you can! I believe that I have a right to attack you if I'll see the possibility, as you just invited me to do it. Besides, I was very surprised when after encouraging me to attack Montressor and take his Luchesi you sounded... let's say, not very friendful, when I really started to consider it: >I see, that the years in the US made Falcon a real Yankee... ;) I'm only not sure whether you were trying to insult me, or American nation, or Montressor (better to say, Bob), who, as far as I know, is the only American in this war. Are you saying that real Russian way would be razing Russian cities, as you did (14 Iskorosten'...) ? > You threaten the Lord, who comes first in this game. Contrary to your words, I offered peace to him. But it seems that your diplomacy succeded - now I have a war with him. > Moreover, I can say that cities 65 and 66 will be the cities only until > my next turn. If my diplomacy failured, I'm going to mercylessly raze > both of them. It seems that your were wrong here as well as Lord Dread if he chose to believe your words. My Elemental, appointed by the priests of Western Temple to be the Guardian of Central Isle, protects now at least 66 from your Archon. Thus, I was not "trying to fool" Lord Dread, and if he would only place his hero and devil in a positions from which they would be able to attack 62 Uglich, your archon would not be able to leave it on the next turn to raze 65, and on the next turn I would be able to move into 65, leaving 66 to Lord Dread. It was my plan, and it was, as far as I can see, a good plan - of course now it's too late to talk about it. I'm sure that you can see that you can't have 65 for yourself. And I doubt that you'll have many chances to take other cities - you have a peace with Lord Dread, you can hardly reach me, and Montressor, having only one-front war, I think, will be able to repel any your attacks, as he already did once. > That's why they can't be the objectives of your deal with our "feathery > friend". [Falcon pensively ruffled his feathers :). Did he say "friend"?] > I don't interested in peace on those conditions (for two turns etc.). Let's try again :). We can have a peace until the end of war, and even cooperative actions, but only in one case (well, in addition to this you'll promise to read my diplomacy messages ;) ) - if you will immediately declare the war with Lord Dread, who, it seems, has strange ideas about alliances (of course in this hypothetical case you would be expected to show by some immediate actions that those are not just hollow words). Offering peace to you, he, at the same time, calls whites "brothers until the end", promises never attack them and will not aid you in your war. Moreover, he occupied the Temple on your border, to deny blessings to your griffin, Ghost and Archon (of course you can take it, but only for the price of one of those three armies...). Is this the way allies should act? I don't think so. Lord Dread, who is always ready to explain treacherous attack by foolish action of his men (can you even call the true Warlord the person who can't master his own armies?)... I heard different end of a story about Scorpion and Bear: The bear and the scorpion reached safely the other side and *then* Scorpion stinged the bear and jumped to the ground. The bear died, and Scorpion lived happily after that without remorses. Doesn't it seem likely that's how your scorpionish "ally" Lord Dread is going to treat you? Well, take your chances then... To Lord Dread: Lord Drab... Or Lord Greed? Were you trying to make a quick buck in 42 Dwarven Keep? I'm not sure if you were trying to look like an idiot when sending your "sorrows and regrets", or if you were hoping that I'm an idiot to accept them. In any case, my armies are ready to test the sharpness of their swords on your men (and invisible to you fairies are already moving to your ghost...) Falcon. Well, and now - boring stuff :) Start: 11 cities, 4181 gold, 428 income, 104 expenses Twice blessed Elemental took neutral city 66 and pillaged spiders (350). Finist found Flight Item G in Upper SW Flight ruin. Sineglazka and Demon visited SW Devil ruin and found two Devils. In a short one-to-one battle one Devil was slained by the Demon - strength 7 vs strength 8 :), the other Devil decided to join Sineglazka. 66 renamed to 66 Shangri-La New builds - Spiders (700) in 66 Shangri-La Hv.Infantry (300) in 04 'Stolitsa' Final: 12 cities, 3531 gold, 527 income, 104 expenses Finist - 12 (+3), Sineglazka - 6 (+3) Falcon PS. And we are only on 5th turn! I already wrote more diplomacy in my messages than in all my other tournament games together. Well, at least it seems that "diplomacy days" will be over on the next turn... And, as Bob before, I want you to understand that I did not want to offend any players personally, but Falcon did want to insult one warlord ;). Andrey _______________________________________________________________________________ The following message was sent on Sunday April 12, 1998 at 11:57 PM EDT by Alex Vickers to all players; Warlords, I greet you. I, Lord Dread have a few comments to make. (here is an editted version of a rather long-winded message from Falcon directed towards me): > but you also can see that I can make a >hero/devil/demon/elephant stack very soon in case if you prefer to fight >me.... I Guess what, I prefer to fight you. >decided to take a risk, so I did not kill your pikeman with my elemental >(I could safely retreat him after that), and now my pikeman can be killed >by you, but I interpreted your message as a wish of peace between us, and >I hope that I was right. As I stated in previous messages, the environment was undefined. By asking what your intentions were, (ie. war/parley) I did not suggest one or the other. You went ahead and assumed one thing. Your hope turned out to be wrong. > In this moment you're controlling Eastern Temple, This is true. But depending on what Yellow decides, this will change - either he will control it for a while, or it can be shared. I cannot make grand assumptions - I must wait until agreements have taken place. >I hope to control the Western one. Be wary, Montressor. Read his diplomacy well, as he so wanted Sir Uriah to heed. > In other words, I hoped that chances for your >accepting of my proposal would be higher if you knew that I'm ready to >fight and my borders would not look attractively for you. I was never partial to the "be my friend, or I'll beat you up" attitude. ' I'd rather die standing than live on my knees.' >To Sir Uriah: >I was very disappointed by your interpretation of my last message Man, it appears that from every message Blue sent, there have been 'misinterpretations'. Is it Montressor who was offended by your words of his military incompetence? Perhaps it was Sir Uriah who considered accepting a treaty with you when in actuality, you were only "mocking" him and the treaties being set. Or me - who didn't accept your peace treaty? (Let's make it clear right now - I have never stated any treaty between the two of us, Blue. Remember, that this is warlords with no diplomacy - we are all at war until otherwise agreed upon mutually.) You speak with a language unto yourself. The truth is, I chose to propose a truce with Sir Uriah because he speaks to the point - something I can trust and can return with. I'd rather not spend the time trying to find every insinuation you make with every overture. I find it interesting that with war, often it is common that hatred is poured into the hearts of soldiers/civilians. To make the opposition 'evil' and so worthy of destruction. The spread of propaganda and rumours highten this fear and loathing. As I said, I find it interesting... and quite sick. (Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me. >:-> ) Sorry, things didn't turn out the way you wanted. But hey, as the game likes to print on the screen, "War is Hell." To Montressor, and Sir Uriah: As far I can tell, I have been true to my word. Up until my last turn, I had not proposed any treaty nor had any existing one. I violated nothing. My vow to you still holds - you have been a friend throughout. It is up to both of you to decide whether I act with honour or not. Sir Uriah, we think alike. We had no treaty, nor any talk of one. You razed the city on our border just as I razed the city on my border with Blue. Same circumstances. Now, you are in the same position I was in: accept a truce with me and allow me to withdraw my forces from the Eastern Temple, or choose war and prepare for battle. I await your decision. Signed, Lord Dread, of side Red. And a personal note (Alex Vickers): (quote from Andrey's turn report: "But then, what could one expect from those nigger and hermaphrodit?" - Sineglazka thought. (Yes, it was politically incorrect thought.... I was expecting someone to make a quip about Bruce Leroy's predicament - it's all in fun. However, not only is 'nigger' politically incorrect, it is *totally* inappropriate. Racist remarks have no place anywhere, including this game. Alex Vickers _______________________________________________________________________________ The following message was sent on Monday April 13, 1998 at 01:21 AM EDT by Andrey Muravyov to all players; Oops, I sent it as noarchive first time :(. This is *not* diplomacy message. I only wanted my reply to be recorded after Alex's message. > However, not only is 'nigger' politically incorrect, it is *totally* > inappropriate. Racist remarks have no place anywhere, including this game. I know about racism probably better than you do - I'm Russian from Latvia, and this is the country where almost 50% of population are Russians, but less than 10% of them have citizenship and any rights. Among my friends are people from many nationalities from all around the world and I've never felt that whites are any superior. But "Red" and "Blue" in our game *are* in war, and if you'll think about almost any war between two nations, you'll see that racist arguments were usually used by both sides. As you said, "hatred is poured into the hearts of soldiers/civilians". Yes, it's sick. As the war is. Andrey _______________________________________________________________________________ The following message was sent on Monday April 13, 1998 at 12:50 PM EDT by Andrey Muravyov to all players; And this is diplomacy message. Of course it would be better to keep it until at least someone made his move, but I just can't resist... Yes, it's rather stupid, but... First of all, summary of my diplomacy proposals from yesterday's long message, so that nobody would get confused : (1) - I prefer alliance with Sir Uriah. The reason for it is that he is Lord Dread's neighbour, and thus Lord Dread will have two-fronts war. In this case Sir Uriah may take 65 without fearing my retaliation strike - but he must *clearly* state in his Turn Report that he is at war with Lord Dread, that he is going to be at war with him until the end of our alliance (which, I hope, will never happen) and at least make some immediate threatening movements with his armies on the "red" border. If my alliance offer will be accepted by Sir Uriah, my armies will not cross the border with Montressor on Turn 6 if Montressor's armies will not cross the border on Turn 6. Thus both of us will have one full turn to prepare the best defense (or offense). Starting from Turn 7, however, we are free to attack each other, and I'm going to, as I believe that "enemy of my ally is my enemy", contrary to Lord Dread's position "enemy of my ally is my ally". But my strongest armies will, most probably, fight Lord Dread, at least within next ~5 turns. (2) - if Sir Uriah will reject my alliance offer (and I suspect that he will reject it, but I still wanted to ask), I propose alliance to Montressor (although I don't mind having two-fronts war as long as everyone else is in the same situation, it's obvious that we will lose if we will have two-front wars while eastern warlords will have one-front wars). In this case we will, most probably, fight mainly our respectful enemies, with a chance of coordinated actions near equator. Montressor, you have the "central neutral city", so I'd like to have a gold from the ruin near, but we can discuss it. (3) - In any case, no matter which alliance will be formed, I prefer to have it until Turn 15, and discuss on Turn 10 whether we want to keep it until the end of game, including Turn 20. I would like to have *real* alliance, with the cooperative attacks if the chance will be, with the minimum armies on our border (just to protect them from flying enemies such as red ghost - that is, if we have a common border), without blocking temples etc. Any specific details may be discussed, but I had no reasons so far to distrust any of northern warlords, so I'm sure we can easily work it out, using our common sense. (4) - I was really insulted by Lord Dread's explanation of his reasons for attack. It's perfectly OK with me that he chose the war, it's almost OK that he attacked my pikemen after speaking about parley (he started diplomacy talkings, and started the war in the middle of them without any provocation, moreover, when I clearly stated that I want peace. He could at least wait one turn, those pikemen did not threaten him) - it only makes him "running dog" in "warlords" terms, but as everybody knows, every human player becomes a "running dog" when playing against a computer ;). What really ticked me off, however, were his shameless insinuations about my plans to betray him, and about my inhonorability (does such word exist?) in general. As everyone can see from the archives of the practice round games, I've never betrayed my allies, and was always true to my word. (Unfortunately, I cannot mention my Round A game as it has no public access yet. All of us are waiting for that wonderful moment). In our B20 I've never broke my word either. When in unclear situation (such as Montressor's plans on his next turn, when Sir Uriah retreated), I prefer to ask for clarifications, and I act according to them. Luchesi was not attacked, as Montressor stated that he still has no hostile intentions. But my pikeman died after I answered that I have no intentions to attack Lord Dread. What was then the point of his question, if he did not want a peace? Only to trick me into moving armies away? And after I started to move them away and changed vectoring, he still had impudency to say that I'm going to traitorously attack him :(. So who gets the title of the treacherous and unhonorable warlord in this game? Unfortunately, Lord Dread is still a "dark horse", contrary to the rest of us, as he did not play in Practice Round, and Round A games are still "closed". But I think we will find some amuzing things soon... I even don't want to comment on his last message, where he, in his usual manner, changed the meanings of my words to the opposite :(, and where he accuses me in exactly those things that he did - just read it yourself, sapienti sat. Falcon PS. Lord Dread _______________________________________________________________________________ The following message was sent on Monday April 20, 1998 at 11:23 AM EDT by rdarco@nyseg.com to all players; From: Bob Arco@NYSEG on 04/20/98 11:16 AM Prospero's diary: Lord Dread and Sir Uriah have entered into a solid non-aggression pact, much to their credit. It seems that both of them have learned enough history to know the folly of two-front wars. Our situation remains bleak, as our preferred ally, Falcon, remains unclear in his intentions. Could it be that he feels that he has something to gain by leaving our relationship ambiguous? I must seek an answer from him, as the fate of the world hangs in the balance... To Falcon: I am dismayed by the fact that I am obviously your *last* choice for an ally. You earlier proposed strong alliance with Lord Dread, and when he rejected you, you proposed strong alliance with Sir Uriah. However, now that Lord Dread and Sir Uriah have both rejected you, and signed a non-aggression pact with clear terms and conditions, it seems obvious to me that a similar pact between us is necessary for our survival. Lord Dread's version of the story about the bear and the scorpion is correct, and much more relevant. The scorpion stung the bear halfway across the river, dooming them both. Why? Because it was the scorpion's nature to commit treachery, even though it was not in his best interest to do so. I do hope that it is not your nature. > Rereading all my previous messages, I still don't see that I've ever said > that I will never attack you, thus I believe that I was free to take > Luchesi. Not explicitly stated, no. However, your tone was not belligerent, and you often spoke of yourself as being peaceful. I had no indication that you were interested in war with me, that is until you pulled your forces up to my border and started making demands. Hopefully you see now that we must commit to our eastern wars, and relax the tensions on our border. > I'm sure that you will never be the primary > target for my armies, as this position seems to be firmly occupied by > another warlord (L.D.) who offended me deeply. I really hope that you have learned through other rounds or other games that opportunistic attacks on your allies are foolish. They produce short-term gains on that front, but ultimately lead to lost opportunity and mediocre performance, if not outright disaster. I hope you don't learn that lesson in this game, at both of our expense. Besides, contrary to Sir Uriah's assertions, my southern border is not that defenseless. Of course I understand why he wants you to attack me. It would make his job a lot easier. In summary, I think terms similar to Lord Dread and Sir Uriah's are appropriate. - I won't attack your cities and units - I won't move my units into your quadrant, unless we both agree - I won't block the western temple for your units - Our truce will continue until turn 11, and will be renegotiated in turn 10. I am not interested in cooperative actions against Lord Dread, and I make no guarantees with regard to the Western Gold ruin. As far as I am concerned it goes to whoever gets there first. Also, the sack and pillage quests are not specific to any target, so there is no reason to make any separate guarantees on quests. What say you? To Lord Dread: Thank you for excluding cooperative actions from your treaty with Sir Uriah. Although I wish I could have your help, I understand and respect your decisions. As you can see above, you can expect similar terms from me in any treaty I may sign with Falcon. Your fight with Falcon is your own for now. My patience with him is growing thin, however. If he continues to vacillate with regard to our own treaty, I may be interested in coming to a different arrangement with you. I will know better when I see his next turn report. To Sir Uriah: You think losing a spider is bad? That is just the beginning of your losses. You made a bad decision when you thought I would be an easy target. Still, I salute you. It is sure to be a good war. _______________________________________________________________________________ The following message was sent on Tuesday April 21, 1998 at 05:29 AM EDT by Yuri Khvorostjanov to all players; Hello fellow warlords! Sir Urriah appriciate your words and waiting your turn anexiously. Lets WAR! To Falcon: The terms of our agreement with Lord Dread doesn't interfere me from any bargain with you. I mean only nonfighting action, of course. Thus I have to proposal you some deal to keep the richest central cities from evil razing: As you could see I've left the city of 65 for your benevolence and I won't mind if you take it(with 117gp from my chest) as well, as the city 61 too. In exchange, it will be good to receive from you the city of 66! Yes yes, it's not the mistake: I wish the city of 66 with Spider production etc. And be sure it would be advantageous for both of us. I hope you know why. As recompense for your invetsments in 66 production I ready give you to pillage one of my city with "obsolete" production (I'll point it after). I'm ready to cooperate our efforts against White tribe any time you wish to fight them, but don't ask me about any agressive actions against Lord of Blue until the end of our peace treaty. I'm not going to doom us both just to have fun and commit treachery ;). Seriously, I promise that I won't make any treacherous attacks on you. > Hopefully you see now that we must commit to our eastern wars, and relax > the tensions on our border. As you can see, my armies are moving east, not north. I even positioned Finist in such a place that he can't reach your Raven(08) on the next turn, so that you would feel more safe. I definitely expect that your Hv.Infantries navies also will move north/east, and not south, as I don't want to keep armies in my 44 North-Tower. I will appreciate if you'll start vectoring Hv.Infantries from Raven(06) to some other city, as they can reach my 44 North-Tower in just two turns, and it makes me feel uncomfortable, moreover, it forces me to keep some armies there for defense. I'm sure that we both can find some better occupation for our armies somewhere in east. > I am not interested in cooperative actions against Lord Dread Actually, you even cannot attack him, as yellow and blue armies separate your lands. It looked more likely on the last turn that I would be able to help you in your war with Sir Uriah, but if you prefer to fight alone, it's fine with me, I don't want to offend you by forcing you to accept my help :). I'm not interested in city 61, as it's in the quarter of my ally Montressor, and I'm not going to take any cities in his quarter, even the neutral ones, unless he asks me about it, as long as my peace treaty with him stays. It's up to you two to decide the fate of 61. According to your kind permission, I took city 65, and according to your wish, I did not raze it. I could not give you city 66, as this city is crucial in my war with Lord Dread (besides, I'm not sure what is that "obsolete" city that I would get). But if Lord Dread will act as I expect him to act, most probably I will have to retreat from 65 or 66 in a turn or two, and you're free to keep the city after that, unless Montressor or Lord Dread will prevent it. Although I would prefer to give this city to my ally Montressor ;), it's much better for me to give the city to you, than to Lord Dread! > Why you are so interested in alliance with Montressor?
