Hercules warily eyes the messenger bird. If it is to be believed, the winds of war are blowing through the land once again. He must prepare immediately to summon his allies and defend the realm's borders. 02-Olympus begins a frenzied, though eerily quiet, effort to prepare for battle. The city is known for raising large birds (1000lbs) that can carry men. They can also be trained to carry large boulders that can be dropped on fortifications, making them very effective against walled cities. The first unit is being readied. Hercules marches to the ruins of Old Rome (destroyed in 1998 by World Cup soccer riots) where an old elemental resides. He is dispatched immediately to spread the news and gather the border guards. Scouts have already reported armies on the march in the West. Hercules continues to the top of Mount Olympus to search for the ghost that haunts the temple ruins there. He is unsure of who's ghost it is, but it is known for its effectiveness in battle. In fact, it inspires men who fight under it so that they are better warriors. The ghost, who can only leave the ruins when summoned for battle, is eager for the almost forgotten taste of victory. It quickly floats away and disappears with its orders. The elemental enters 22-New Rome and orders the garrison there to begin training cavalry units. He continues on, there will be no rest tonight. In his hand he clutches a book titled "Greek and Roman Mythology". He wonders if his dreams are a result of his reading about his namesake, or, as he strongly suspects, is he somehow spiritually the original hero? Some of the creatures in his dreams are nowhere to be found in his books, and they seem so real! He feels that his memories are not all his own. The world has had no room for super-heros for thousands of years, but the time has come again. Perhaps that ancient entity that was Hercules has been awaiting such a time to return. The modern Hercules springs up with newfound commitment! He has a destiny to fulfill. Theseus arrives in New Rome with an archon that has been her ally for many years. They send word to Olympus, but Hercules is away. Theseus cannot wait, so she heads out to ready the border defenses. She thirsts for battle. As she travels, she reflects on recent history. How the people of the land had embraced folklore from Greek and Roman history. Now that the scent of war wafted on the breeze once again, all cities were being renamed for Greek and Italian cities and warriors were taking the names of ancient heros. This had not been since Old Rome had been destroyed. How things go full circle! The elemental travels to 21-Venice and sets up a scouting outpost there. Due to genetic experiments in the 21st century, some cities have giant spiders that can be trained to fight. They are somewhat slow, but their webbing is ideal for use in cities. He orders the city to ready the first unit for war. He reminds the local populace that they are on the frontier and armies are on the march nearby. With grim, but optimistic faces, they prepare the fortifications. A new light cavalry unit gallops to 25-Genoa and relays orders to begin training giant spiders. They hear word that Theseus is airborne with an archon and is joining the fight. Morale soars. The fast moving ghost floats to 23-New Athens, then to 27-Salonika. They prepare for battle. Hercules proceeds to the ruins of his grandfather's first house with a unit of griffins. He finds the magic command item stashed there and argues with an aristocrat over paperwork for taking the item from an historic site. He wins the argument by being proficient in bureaucratese and proceeds south. Theseus keeps in constant contact with the many scouts going to and fro. A White hero is approaching the western frontier. Though she suspects why the hero is there, she remains wary. In the meantime, she visits an old ruin (unknown type of building) and meets with a devil that inhabits it. This devil is known locally for heroism against mighty foes. Not just a pretty face! She decides to consult the wise men in the North Temple. Since her advance cavalry has cleared the area, she approaches the temple without hesitation. But, this is the frontier border, so she must remain aware and in haste. One of the wise men asks her if she believes in the power of the temple. She bows and nods slightly, knowing they prefer direct, and simple, answers. He places a hand on her head and begins to chant. She feels a warmth spreading through her body. She finds it interesting that it starts in her feet, not in her head as she expected. Suddenly, he ceases chanting and informs her that the blessing is complete. Funny, she expected to feel different. The archon and light cavalry proceed to be blessed, also. While she awaits, another of the temple inhabitants approaches her and states that she has won a free quest by being the 1000th blessing that year! He says she must use her newfound power and pillage 958 gold from her enemies. Upon accomplishing this, she will receive an ally to aid her in this war. The Professor's troops have been guilty of being too academic, content to explore ruins and temples, investigate artifacts, and occupy neutral cities. Even this pursuit is not going well, as Nathan Brazil notes with shock that Kamevil's hero has beaten him to the flight item Nathan so coveted. Back to the barracks! A glance about the board shows immediately that one mighty Warlord has gained incredible strength, has severely endangered the Red Warlord, and is now knocking at White's very door. I'm sure the wise Kamevil realizes that all of White's efforts must now go to slowing down this blue behemoth and that it is in Kamevil's best interest if this endeavor is met with some success. White troops on the Patrick/Kamevil border are now, and will remain for the duration, defensive in nature. I very much would like to avoid fighting battles simultaneously on each of my borders, and hope that Kamevil will see the wisdom of maintaining our friendship for as long as is necessary. But a very large cause for worries about the power balance in this world is the capture of all 6 central cities by yellow next turn. Therefor i propose to 1) Minimize all military actions at the white-blue border (with little room for surprise-attacks after a proper safety zone has been established) 2) Acces to west-temple for both white and blue armies (the giant was guarding the temple last turn to stop the yellow elemental from becoming doubly-blessed 3) Concentrate our military actions to the central cities, the top three of them in the white zone of interest and the bottom three in the blue zone of interest. If you do not believe that yellow would be able to reach such an enormous advantage in this world within one turn, try walking in his shoes for one turn. STATE OF THE UNION MESSAGE Things are certainly as grim as Fortissimo suggested in his recent Archive message. Kamevil is indeed nearly in complete control of the middle. He will soon have another Hero, some more money, a Dragon, and will in no time be visited by vectoring Griffins. Fortissimo is in no small way the author of this scenario. While Kamevil chose a wise middle board strategy, the Blue Warlord went on a militarty campaign instead that thoroughly weakened two of his foes and forced them to pull their best troops away from the middle and to their borders to discourage further aggression. With the three of us so occupied, Kamevil stood alone, chuckling. What can be done? I hope Fortissimo has a plan. The Warlords "solution" to our boundary dispute was completely one-sided; I trust him not and will continue to prepare myself for the worst on our boundaries. I realize, however, that the game will soon be over for all of us if something is not done to equalize the situation in the middle, so I agree to Blue's offer to share access to Temples. I'm afraid i've used up all my luck for the rest of the tournament. The Red Armies keep on making mistakes. Hero Tutenkhamen was left to die flying over the river next to 34Minnekamer. He took with him into his grave the Red Standard and Flight item F. Professor Pat, I've left the west temple open for you. Use it wisely. Our forces on our border seem in balance; a break through is impossible from both sides. I trust a 'armed peace' or 'draw game' like this much more (and a draw happens in Warlords quite often) than an unbalanced demilitarisation like you have with your yellow neighbour, which leaves much possibilities for surprice attacks. Certainly with a yellow army which has shown a very offensive gameplay. Prpfessor Pat, I think our main chances of expansion lie in the center of the map, and I suggest we concentrate our main armies on the still ill-defended group of center cities. That way this game may end prosperous for the both of us.
