__________ __________/ \__________ <__________ Turn 1 __________> \__________/ _______________________________________________________________________________ The following message was sent on Thursday February 26, 1998 at 03:50 PM EST by Anna-Karin Bjrck och Stefan Lindstrm to all players; As he steps outside his mansion, Lord Vetinari feels that this is the day. The old books have been studied long enough, his followers are impatient and it is time to once again inflict *religion* upon the world. It has been too long since a real fundamentalist government ruled anywhere on Earth, so he sees that task as his to take, as the supreme being of the Order of the Ancient and Holy Knights of God (he isn't completely satisfied with the name, but it will have to do. Soon everyone will have to kneel before him anyway). But already other pretenders have caught on to the idea of religion. Speed is of essence in the race for power. He calls forth his First Disciple (in the OAHKG (hmm, doesn't quite roll off the tongue) no names are necessary but Lord Vetinari's) to go and gather support from the foul places in the mountains where hideous creatures have been created. The First Disciple fulfills his mission without fail, and the first city falls under Lord Vetinari's rule. Hauri" to all players; The sleeping technician is jolted awake by the alarm. He squints at the bright wall screen, trying to read the the message that flashes before him. Frustrated, he mumbles "pictures lock!" -- and the message comes up in the more familiar, if embarassing, form. The legendary Lord Vetinari has begun an advance in the northwest! No surprise that this great man would be the first to answer the call. Could it be that the time has really come? Could it be that this Eden will once again be laid waste by plundering armies and otherworldly beasts? Excitement courses through him as he imagines the thrill of real destruction, of crushing the skulls of defeated enemies fleeing before him as they have so many times on his view-bot. Hastily, he lumbers toward the cryogenic room, scratching his sagging buttocks as he tries to remember the procedure for waking the Great one; the Warmaster; the Slayer of Dragons! ------- Little Puppy aches with post-cryogenic stiffness. He rubs his bald head and itches where he must before he notices the technician lying prostrate before him. "Oh, Great One," the tech begins "I am here to serve you as we rush out to destroy the complacency that has befallen this land! I know much already of the noble arts of death and the joys of triumph. Teach me more, and I shall serve you well! Let it be known that we have infiltrated every city in this soft land, and placed a patriot there such as myself to allow for its quick subjugation. The days of this pitiful, weak light are numbered, my Master!" The small Warlord looks at the deranged youth quizzically. How very odd, he thinks, that the instructions would become so confused with the passing of time. "Rise, and hear my words! I am Little Puppy, Slayer of Dragons, Protector of Things Both Weak and Small, and Yipping Tormentor of Greater Warlords! Know ye not my cause? I am He Who Frolics With Bunnies! I am the one they call "Swell", "Tullip", and "Puppy the Sweet". Hear my names and tremble! I have come to defend this Eden from those who would step upon her flowers! From those who would choose chaos over bliss! I am the defender of this warm world." With these words the little warlord killed the pitiful technician, known in these times as scout (for technicians were the last to run the machines that searched for extraterrestrial life). "Hmmmm...." The pale king muses aloud, "I wonder how you get someone out of these tanks...There must be instructions here somewhere..." ------- Babyseal shivers as she runs northward through the mountain pass. Little Puppy had nearly killed her as he brought her out of slumber, for the instructions had not mentioned that he needed to install the Microsoft Breathe patch before initiating the hastily-marketed Microsoft Restore Functions routine. She wonders if she will ever warm up. Little Puppy had named the city 02 Nematode, after the unheralded little guys who keep our soil life vital, and told her to go find a capital city from which to base their operations. In 02 Nematode, he built giant bats, since he was afraid that nobody else would and the whole species would feel bad. He had also given Babyseal diplomatic instructions. She could choose to pursue one of the following options, depending upon her enemies thoughts and how she saw things progessing. Either she could attempt to work out a deal with Gem that they would both refrain from joining any alliance or pseudo-alliance, irrespective of Apache and Lord Vetinari's actions, or she could approach Apache and see if he would agree to uniting the forces of the East and battling together towards the setting moon. She still had time, though, to consider the options, and see how those warriors would proceed. Babyseal shivers again and heads north in search of one of the greatest cities of her age. But, breathless, she arrives at the point where she had expected to see the storied Locker Room, and finds only ancient glass and sweat-socks. As she passes through the ruined city, she finds Betty, the light elemental, happily sunning herself in what used to be the city stadium. Sad to learn that this blessed world was about to witness again war and terror, she quickly makes her way through the pass and on to the City 23, where she kills the evil scout who was waiting for her. As per instructions, the city is renamed Parakeet 23, and begins producing griffins. Babyseal, desperately hoping to find a city in which to base her operations, heads still further north, but comes only to further ancient ruin, where the ghost of a poor little pony lies trapped in its stall. Such a poor, poor, sad little ghost, all alone for so many long years without his mommy. She frees this ghost and he goes trotting off west. Babyseal watches his spindly legs kicking up the dust and tripping every so often and thinks what fun it would be to be done with silly wars and instead to go hiking. Hauri" to all players; Great Babyseal, I have come to join with your army, and help lead the forces of Little Puppy to victory upon this battlefield. What is your name, noble warrior? I am nameless, like the air. But I have seen much battle, even in your time. And I am at your service. You say you have seen battle in my time. You look to me familiar. Have you done service for Little Puppy before? Cryogenic sleep confuses the mind, Great Babyseal, and fills it with mirages and chimeras. Do not think any more on this, for it will unsettle your concentration. You are right, She Who Has No Name. Very well. To battle, my friend! -------- To The Mighty Lord Vetinari, Powerful Commander of the Western Forces, and He Who Has Begun This Battle, Noble Sir, I fear that I am unable at this time to bind myself to the kind pact that you suggest, for I desire peace with the Great Apache and can not be constrained by treaties at all borders. Let me make this suggestion: we cannot clash this next period, and may not even clash the period hence. If Apache does not accept promplty, perhaps I shall reconsider my hasty refusal and see if we can, after all, agree to observe our common borders. My proposal to you is this: act as if we had no pact, and defend accordingly. If, within a period or two, we find that we can make peace, not much harm will have been done. Godspeed, O Mighty Lord -- Little Puppy, Slayer of Dragons Defender of Things Both Weak and Small And Yipping Tormentor of Greater Warlords To the Great Apache, Of the Line of the Legendary Apache, Feared Emperor-Chief of the Time of War, Great One, I have walked in the shadow of your ancestor, for I am from a courser age, allowed to live beyond my time by the ice that cheats the Dark Angel. My time has been prolonged in preparation for a day such as this one, and I am here now to defend all things helpless and frail from the plunder and destruction that are wreaked by war. And yet, I fear that the forces I see before me are too powerful for my insignificant armies to defeat alone. Your blood flows with greatness, and if you are half the commander that your ancesters were I have hopes that together we can defeat the Western Menace. Will you join me? The agreement I would suggest is the following. We shall avoid each other's territory, and explain all actions that might threaten the other's cities. We shall at all times leave the temple that we share empty of forces, so that we may worship freely. I will take the city 06, for as yellow it is my birthright, but if you wish to search the ruin behind it I will consider it yours until at least period seven. Other things will be as you desire them. I see a number of possibilities for dividing Western cities if we are so lucky as to occupy them. We can split the entire map, and I will stay to the north until my enemy is defeated and you stay to the south. I have concerns with that arrangement because our foes are strong indeed, and perhaps we would do well to keep open the possibility of attacking across this line to keep them unbalanced and allow for the opening of multiple fronts. Perhaps better would be to simply avoid the cities that the other occupies west of the two central cities, and split along the equator that which lies to the east. Perhaps we should wait until we cross that bridge to worry about it, since we both will face powerful warriors and may be defending rather than attacking. As I say, these things are up to you. Think well about it, and tell me your thoughts. If you cannot agree to the terms I have suggested, feel free to make a counter proposal, but be aware that I may not find the proposal to my liking and look elsewhere. -- Little Puppy, Slayer of Dragons Defender of Things Both Weak and Small And Yipping Tormentor of Greater Warlords To Gem, Mysterious Conjurer With Tourmaline and Rutile, I sorrow that I cannot understand your words: that you will not seek alliances unless provoked. Surely, if neither of us allied, the purpose would be to provoke the other in battle in a pactless free-for-all, the spoils of which would go where they may. If all you meant was that you would not agree to a pact unless I did, you should have spoke thusly, as the language I speak died unnoticed centuries ago, and I am not a clever interpreter of words. -- Little Puppy, Slayer of Dragons Defender of Things Both Weak and Small And Yipping Tormentor of Greater Warlords ------------- This period belonged to the ghost of that poor mommyless pony, who headed east and took two cities, though more through the incompetance of the war-hungry scouts than through martial skill -- the little guy tripped as much as he ran. The first was 22 Happy Town. It seems that in that town they produce archers whose wit is so amusing that morale is lifted within the entire batallion in which they serve. Sadly, they prefer making jokes to battle, and at first refused to join the force. Finally, for the sum of 1000 gold pieces, they agreed to allow some of their number to leave their club occasionally, and the agreement was sealed. Next, he stubled through forest and field until he reached the city 25, which he renamed 25 Dandilion since he so enjoyed eating their flowers. There he build griffins because they looked so big and strong, and he thought it might be fun to have someone to come fly with him through the canopy. Betty the elemental headed south, eager to reach the border soon, in case Apache was unwilling to accept a deal. She moved through the city 27, which she renamed "nuga-city" in honor of trifles, and there she built light infantry, as they seemed to be among the greatest of trifles. The Nameless Hero flew with her archon friend to the city 26. She would not fall into this trap of naming cities after the weak and helpless, for this could only destroy morale of the fighting troops that were employed therein. Instead, she named the city in honor of the two greatest generals of her age: the renowned Marianne Scottsdale Pamby of the Northeastern Containment, and Frombold Thomas Namby, leader of the Orkollian Expansion. Now there was a name that would project strength and power! Finally, seeing that Gem was also kind to the weak, and had chosen to build poor, unappreciated giant bats in his capitol city as well, Little Puppy allowed production in 01 Nematode to be shifted to elephants. At least now bats everywhere could hold their little heads high when asked if their kind served in the Great War. He walked over to his desk and ran his fingers over the keyboard, pulling up the status reports: Red Echo had unleashed the Ghost of Crazy Horse upon the lands and now the Ghost had made its way to Minnesota 37. Echo had also conjured assistance from the Earth Mother herself, through the form of an Elemental which was ravaging this Godless country like a whirlwind. The small band of mutant Orcs had been completed and hastily traveled to the nearest city to swarm a hapless scout. Lastly, one of the fiercest American Indian chiefs in history emerged from the genetics lab in Powder River 32. Red Cloud familiarized himself with his surroundings, then drawing on his powerful medicine, called upon the spirit of a Devil to assist him on his mission. Apache closed the report and sat back in his chair wondering how the medicine came so easily to the Heroes. Maybe renaming the cities after historic battles and massacres enhanced their spiritual powers, or at the very least, inspired them to act beyond their natural limits. Well, we shall see very soon how =93inspired=94 the red armies have become. Leaning back to the computer, Apache began composing a reply to Little Puppy. -- To the Mighty and Dauntless Slayer of Dragons, He-Who-Brings-Fear to Greater Warlords, and Guardian of Things Both Wee and Frail, My Grandfather spoke highly of you, Little Puppy, even though you were his enemy. He respected your bravery and prowess as a leader and a warrior. Hauri" to all players; As the sun broke over the mountains on the first morning of the third period, the ghost of the cute little pony trotted along happily through the morning mist, stopping to play with butterflies and and sniff petunias on his way. He came to the city 53, entered and named it Lambkin 53 after an old friend of his from the barn. He prepared to go skipping on his way, when he saw another ghost -- a big, MEAN looking ghost -- heading toward the temple. Oh, a nasty ghost it was indeed, and when the cute little pony asked it if it wanted to play it just howled and reached out a fraying arm to grab the poor little thing. The little pony could only run back to Lambkin 53 and hide behind a slide in the playground, hoping that the big meany would go away with out any more trouble. To the south, Betty the elemental took the town 24, and named it Feldspar, since it seemed that pegmatites were not getting their just recognition in the southwest. She then moved westward and took 54, naming it Horny Toad so that Apache would see Little Puppy's appreciation for the reptillian fauna of the American desert. Meanwhile, " " searched "NE Worm" and didn't just find "any" worm, but in fact found a great, mutated C. elegans, left over from the days of genetic engineering. It was so thrilled that Little Puppy would name his capitol city "Nematode" that it offered to help in the Puppy's noble quest. Babyseal, at the same time, searched "NE Command" and found, to her dismay, command item B. She, of course, had wanted command item A, and was much put off by the misleading ruin name (I will make this joke only twice more :) ). To the Great Apache, Friend, I am thankful that you have chosen to join with me in this battle, and I greatly hope that we will have much success together. Let us go, as you have suggested, and smoke the pipe of friendship and peace. We must be quick, however, for the western forces grow menacing and strong, even as we seek only to defend our lands (my lands, of course, extend to the western mountains). For instance, Gem, the Lord of Corundum, has left this conundrum: why, when he speaks only of peace, does he rush so quickly to your border? O, Great Apache, beware this demon in New Age hippy garb! He is known throughout the land by many names: "Destroyer of Kingdoms", "He Who Would Defeat Bob Heeter", "Discoverer of the Panagos Effect", and, simply, "The Great One". Hauri" to all players; The ghost of the cute little pony looks out from behind the playground slide and sees that the big nasty spirit has gone. "Maybe I scared it with my snorting!" he thinks, and begins to strut with pride on his spindly legs, though he quickly falls and looks around to make sure nobody was watching. Then, as he often does, he begins to think of his mommy: looking out at the world between her long, muscular forelegs; her soft, warm nose snuggling his just before the accident. He thinks maybe if he goes to the temple he can talk to God, and maybe God will tell his mommy that he's OK and that a nice lady freed him from the ruined barn. Along the way he meets up with C elegans who was also heading there, and the cute little pony rides on the worm's alien, leathery back the rest of the way. The little pony asks if he can go inside alone, because his mommy told him that people aren't supposed to hear when you talk to God, at which the worm smiled and said he'd wait, for wars aren't nearly as important as mommies. Humming to himself outside, C elegans hears a sickly, primal roar and a squeal of terror cut short by something that sounds like severed high-tension wires shorting against the ground. Madly, he rushes into the temple, only to find the terrible white ghost hovering over a broken, blackened body. The haunt looks up from its victim, and launches a blue-white bolt at the worm, but C had been in many battles with these creatures over the centuries, and knew both how to avoid their weapons and how to prey up on their weaknesses. After destroying the murderous ghoul, he returns to his dying companion, horrified that he had not thought before that perhaps the cruel Lord Vetinari might be hiding already some viscious beast within the temple. The cute little pony tries to move to look up at his new friend, but the effort is too painful. He lets out a long, growing whimper with his eyes clenched and then cries to the worm: "I'm scared! I'm scared! I'm scared! I don't want to die! I'M SCARED! Am I...Am I gonna die?" "You're not gonna die. I'm here now. Here, let me hold you. Relax. I'm here now. You're gonna be OK." C hates himself for his inability to make the words sound true, and for the first time in many scores of years, he cries at his failure . ------------------------ Upon hearing the news of this cruel death, the first bloodshed of the war known as B09, Babyseal issues a proclamation: All ye good armies of Little Puppy -- to the temple! Let dreams of cities be damned! We shall have our revenge on the White Lord, and he shall reap the tempest! Let this be known throughout the land: that the northern temple belongs to Little Puppy, and no enemies shall defile her by worshipping there, lest they wish to have the altar strewn with their own blood and bodies! None save you, my good warriors, and the men and women of the crescent tribes to the south, if they wish to come so far, shall enter past her columns! --------------------- To the Brave and Strong Lord Vetinari: I see you have thoughts that this temple between us is a place for war and death, no different from a sandstone castle or bloodied plain! We are a religious people, though our Great Locust is perhaps alien to your heathen masses. You will never hold this place of worship for long, great warrior. I implore you now to back your armies away and defend instead the cities that you have captured. Let me make a proposal to you, to guide our decisions as we battle. Today the temple changed hands, and well it might many times in the future. As goes the temple, so will cities, with both of us trading them like cards for a time, but neither gaining advantage. At times like these, the temptation to raze one's own land or an enemy's, lest it be used by another can be great, but if we follow our short-term desires where they lead, the entire North will be soon put to smouldering waste, and even if we both survive the destruction we shall so weaken ourselves that in the final accounting we will be but bit players. So as to keep the northern city fraction from dwindling to insignificance, I propose that we both swear not to raze a single northern city through at least period 10, at which point we can reassess the agreement. If you do not accept this agreement, be warned that I expect to use this tool against you at every opportunity I deem useful. I realize that to ask for a pact in a time of war seems odd. Consider this a type of Geneva Convention, to protect all the civilians that live in our midst. -- Little Puppy, Slayer of Dragons Protector of Things Both Weak and Small And Yipping Tormentor of Greater Warlords To the Legend Gem: Your words to Apache said much of your regard for your opponents here. You spoke of him as a sacrificial lamb to your greatness, and spoke of how victory would be assured if he did war against me rather than the wondrous Gem. Very well, I do not doubt that all you say is true. You wish to claim the title of the Greater Warlord, and verily I can have no pretensions to the words which I gave to you and you, with no need for thought upon the matter, accepted. Truly, I have already blundered more than once, and learn from those against whom I battle here how this water war ought to be fought. Your ways perplex me for I think I see a reason to your moves and then I become confused when they follow not my expectations. Ah, I am watching greatness, of this I am aware, and I hope to learn volumes from observing the subtleties in your preparations. As my title demands, it is you then that I must torment, and I will not rest in this war until I am certain that the crystal you grow here, though it be a brilliant and fiery thing that draws crowds from all corners to gaze in wonder, though it be noble and immense, and though it be made of the purest carbon and rarities for splendor, though it be all these things, I shall not rest until I am certain also that it be ever so slightly flawed. Let me proclaim that ever after its conclusion, never will you gaze upon the war B09 without noticing this small flaw, this annoying defect, that others know as the yipping of Little Puppy. -- Little Puppy, Slayer of Dragons Protector of Things Both Weak and Small And Yipping Tormentor of Greater Warlords To My Friend Apache, Great warrior, the words of Gem do pain me when I hear them. He claims that I have made of you a sacrificial lamb, and that my interest in our friendship is only to see you fall before his sword. But this is not the case. First, let me observe that I do not think you are worse off befriending me and fighting only Gem than you would be had you been forced to battle us two. The question is open whether you would have done better to fight me, and I suppose this is quite possible, but I do believe I have some power yet. Being placed at the opposite corner, I unfortunately cannot engage Gem directly, for I would greatly enjoy a battle in which I could be taught lessons by a master. I suppose in his mind, any ally I would have taken would be a sacrificial lamb, but that is not why I chose you. When I battled your wise ancestor, it is true that he overreached, and for a time I was able to punish him for his early error. But what impressed me most about the man was his tenacious defense once he had let go of what he took too soon. No matter how I tried, I could not wrest a single citadel from his grip after period five, if I recall correctly. When I asked myself, who could stand against one so great as Gem, I thought of this Apache. It is possible that I have either misjudged your strength or underestimated his brilliance, and in that case I give you this small pledge: As long as I battle upon this watery land, so shall you. If Gem manages to run you over as he so proudly boasts he will, I will call your armies northward to one of my protected cities, and that place shall be yours to keep so that you may never perish. If I have cities to allow it we can discuss which other ones I can grant you on the last day. However, given your strength I do not expect this to come about. I will also tell you this: in the past, once our enemies have been destroyed I have made war with my former allies. I did this because I understood the cardinal rule of the gods here "Peace is not an option" to prohibit any other course of action. I have since learned that allies are not bound by rules to war once they have slain their enemies, and I pledge to you now that even if we manage together to destroy the western menace, however distant the possibility may be, I will never lift a finger against you in agression unless first betrayed. As we speak my armies in the north weaken themselves in battle as Vetinari and I vie for control of our shared temple, so perhaps I will not be able to afford you quick assistance, but be assured that if ever the chance presents itself for me to weaken the blue plague, I will take it, and I will open up a front to the southwest as soon as I am able. Do not be alarmed by my sad deficit in cities, which may even grow worse for a time. In chess, it is for Black to defend and wait for the right time to wrest the initiative. If Black wishes to change what has been written by the gods, he must pay a price. Gem has taken the initiative by moving against you from the start, and ceding his northern front, which is now safe. I feared you and headed south, and so now the price if I wish to press Vetinari is foregone cities. So be it. By the way, there are physical forces in this land which I felt I understood, but I find instead that my scientists are but dullards in their knowledge of relevant physics. Gem's scientists are better; I know not at what state are those in your employ. If they are no better than mine, let me give you this advice: ponder well the odd placement of Gem's vessel S.S. l.i. Regard soon both her and her cargo, and consider deeply the implications for future battle. This man far surpasses our combined experience, we must not let a lesson pass unnoticed. Finally, Gem hopes to sow dissent by mentioning my catapults. I build catapults mostly to ensure freedom of religion, certainly not because I expect to ever use them against you! In fact, I see my placing them on your border as a vote of confidence in both the strength and the wisdom of our alliance. You see, I consider a catapult-building city to be a difficult one to defend. Hence, with faith in your ability against Gem I put them near you because I felt that this was a relatively safe city. If I had meant to attack you, I would have built them farther back and vectored them to our border. Gem looks through the eyes of confidence: he thinks nothing of building archers upon the waterfront and the mighty Pegasus near your border. I, however, feel less certainty in my skills, and so place builds where they will be protected in case my front lines fail. -- Little Puppy, Slayer of Dragons Protector of Things Both Weak and Small And Yipping Tormentor of Greater Warlords Summary: Babyseal searches Upper NE Flight and finds Flight Item C. Hauri" to all players; The nameless hero heads north upon the wings of her friend angel, in search of an ancient city that she knew from her fighting days so long ago. Alas, when she reaches her destination, the towers that once rose mightily from the northern lowlands now lie among the waters of a rank bog. With frustration at her wasted effort, she curses the very stones that are strewn upon these bottomlands, but her words draw the attention of a youthful monster, which introduces itself as 'lil devil. The nameless hero o rders it north, and 'lil devil does not wish to remain in the presence of such a foul mood and so escapes quickly, where it finds the city 21, which she renames 21 gneiss in order to taunt the southwestern crystalline power. In a similar vein, 62 Entropy (the great anti-crystal force) and 06 schist are taken by C and a small orc respectively, and named with annoyance as the object. To Lord Vetinari, Great Leader of the Knights: Forgive me for demanding clarity, but your words in reply to my question of razing do not have the ring of promise to my ears. I considered taking and razing 61 Atlantis to teach a lesson in how I practice diplomacy, but I decided that perhaps you felt y ou had made your desires clear. Let me, then, ask the question again: do you agree to raze no northern cities at least through period 10 in return for the same pledge from me? What I am looking for is a statement such as "I agree to the terms you sugge st". I tend to force these issues simply because I do not wish to allow either of us to reneg upon our vow without the proper diplomatic consequences. I do not consider a vague statement that you would not anyway engage in a scorched earth policy to be the same as a pledge to raze no northern cities. Again, forgive me for being so legalistic in my requests. I see that your forces build rapidly upon our common front. Clearly you are not a Warlord to be trifled with; I look forward to learning more lessons of war. -- Little Puppy, Slayer of Dragons To the Great Apache, Leader of the Crescent Tribes: Friend, I applaud your advance, and your growing defense against the cruel Crystal Lord. He has freed his beasts with uncanny speed but I am heartened to see that they have no immediate chances for attack. In fact, I was surprised this day at Gem's troo p movements, not because they leave unexpected opening, or because they do not develop well his attack, but simply because to me they seem somehow...uninspired. Red Echo had risen early and was prepared to set out when it caught his eye. The eagle with golden eyes sat high in the old white oak where the leafy boughs were beginning to thicken and turn green. It stared directly at the Red Hero, down in the clearing. A few moments passed as he looked back at the eagle, then the Hero slowly dropped to his knees and softly sang a prayer to the spirit-eagle who watched over him from its’ lofty perch and as the song’s words drifted off into silence, the eagle took wing and flew out of view. Echo watched the figure until it was out of sight and then noticed the single feather which gently fluttered to the ground. He walked over and picked it up, making a mental note to add this powerful gift to his headdress after completing the day’s mission. Tucking the feather away he headed northwest, feeling revived and confident. Red Echo met up with a Griffin and continued on to a SE ruin. As he approached the ancient city, a Devil appeared and offered his services to Echo and the Red forces. Feeling a bit uneasy about tainting his own medicine, he sent the Devil southward to help in defending Apache’s cities against the onslaught of the Crystal armies. -- Meanwhile, to the northeast, Red Cloud and his devilish sidekick made their way to another SE ruin where they enlisted the aid of an evil Demon spirit who boasted of his ability to change precious diamonds back into coal with a single touch. Red Cloud thought on this and decided that Gem’s lands of valuable pebbles would be an adequate test of this Demon’s so-called power. He departed the ruins and headed SW with his evil entourage. -- Apache’s blessed Elemental led the unit of cannon-fodder, er...um... Lt.Cavalry, towards city 64. The colossal walls of the city seemed to be invulnerable. After much coaxing from the Elemental, the Lt.Cavalry was convinced that victory was possible and led the charge against the waiting Spiders inside the castle walls. As the Red armies breached the main gates, the defenders descended upon the hapless Lt.Cavalry. While the Spiders were distracted, the Elemental seized the opportunity to unleash a successful surprise attack against them....., however it was not soon enough to save the Lt.Cavalry. The city was renamed after the Choctaws, the tribe which invented the game of Lacrosse.....of which, Red Cloud had always been a fan of. -- To Little Puppy, He-Who-Slaughters-Serpents-Without-Mercy (SoDPoTBWaSAYToGW), I have decided to take you at your word.....My Hero will return after Turn 7 to claim the Eastern Gold ruin....In your last communiqué concerning the “border-city or gold-ruin” deal, you claimed that: " I have realized that in my greed, I have made our alliance more difficult for you than it should be. I now pledge that the ruin is yours to search at any point in the game that you wish. I say this because it seems to me that with the pressure on your west, you need to make haste to your ally ruins after getting flight, and I don't wish to hinder this decision. I pray that you will be able to hold off the mighty Gem, for if I am in such a weakened state he may be able to roll through my forces. Good luck to you. Really, though, I am simply writing because I am in a chatty sort of mood, and want you to know that our movements may be long in coming. We are faced with a difficult choice, you see: which of two bad situations do we most fear. We can, for example, defend the mighty temple, for I have a feeling that the evil Lord Vetinari has designs to return and desecrate that sacred place. Given our fervent spirituality, this is nearly unallowable, and there is much that I would give to avoid just such an occurance. On the other hand, I am quite frightened of the terrible First Disciple as he heads down to join in the melee. What sadness if, in defending the temple, he were allowed to continue to walk the Earth... Hauri" to all players; On the morning of the sixth period, the nameless hero lets out a howl and heads not south to the temple as had been planned, but quickly northwest with her griffin friend, to the ruin of the ancient city known once as NW Devil. The resident devil -- last in a long line of underworld creatures which, long ago, flocked to this shimmering city for relaxation -- is shocked to see yellow leather rather than the white robes of Lord Vetinari, and flees in terror from the hero and her band. There is something about this nameless hero, an arrogant power in the eyes sheltered by her horned helmet, that frightens even a beast accustomed to the caverns of Hell. So scared is he that he bounds across the Elysian Fields Memorial Bridge, all the while looking backward, hoping that if he can reach Nirvana by the end of the seventh period, perhaps Lord Vetinari will still accept his services as a friend to the White armies. Earlier in the day, Lord Vetinari's First Disciple had headed southward upon the back of a great bat. This bat grew tired quickly, but the First Disciple had hoped before nightfall to reach the small temple at the foot of a vast bridge to the south. Not wishing to force his steed to weariness, the First Disciple bade the beast take rest, and he continued along on foot, stopping only when he reached the holy sight. It is here, then, that the calamity takes place. The Devil, out of breath, stumbling in a fear- and weariness-induced haze, and looking whence he came rather than toward his destination, collides with the praying Disciple. Trying to gain balance, his huge claw accidentally rips through the robes of the holy man, leaving vital organs exposed and throbbing. In horror the Disciple looks down at his open abdomen, pouring blood and spilling bowel. How could it come to this he thinks as the calm of Paradise descends upon him. How could I, the greatest hero of the North, end in such a random accident, with never a chance to fight? The Devil, alone and with all energy drained by the sight before him, sadly collapses and awaits his own certain death. -------- To the Great Apache, It seems that you have managed to win the respect of our enemy Gem, who in the south razes cities as he flees from you, just as the Devil fled from my nameless hero. It is a note to your skill that you have forced the cruel Blue armies to destroy what they once owned. It is true, of course, that in the center Gem's forces advance at a nearly unstoppable pace. Do not let them shake your resolve, Great Warrior; an elemental for a worm is not a bad trade at all. One observation has made me curious, my friend. I am told by those who have recently returned from tours of your fine southern cities (they do indeed put our northern hamlets to shame!) that in many of these cities you have skilled artisans who are prepared at any moment to produce regalia of the finest silk and rarest azurite for ceremonial scouting units. We have found when discussing prices with northern builders that we save much money by producing bats or light infantry instead, and we obtain similar defensive stability. Is there something about these units that makes them attractive and that I should know about, or do they have ceremonial significance to your people? Perhaps you are simply more generous with your funds than are we in the north, for truly some of our people go without work when perhaps we could employ them. In this case, Apache, I tip my hat to my generous southern neighbor, who even in times of war does not forget those less fortunate than he. Indeed, these are ideals which I have long held up as my own, but occasionally I must be reminded of what we hope to achieve in our allotted three score and ten (well, some fifteen score in my case, but I was asleep for most of it!). To aid my southern economy, then, which I have until now sorely neglected, I shall build bats in 54 Horny Toad. Perhaps I am not as generous as you, noble Apache, but the breeders of bats are nearly as often without work as are the clothiers of scouts. Good luck to you, friend! -- Little Puppy, Slayer of Dragons Protector of Things Both Weak and Small And Yipping Tormentor of Greater Warlords To the Mighty Vetinari, You are correct that my ways of diplomacy seem odd to many, though you may rest assured that I shall stick by my words. Generally, I think like this: if I make an offer, a warlord has a period to consider the offer and make a reply. If the reply is not clear, or if it is a counter-offer without acceptance of my terms, then I leave open the option of swift punishment in retaliation for such lighthearted treatment of my words. This is why I felt that razing would have been an option to force you to view my queries with the proper gravity. As I said, however, your intent was not entirely cryptic, and so I felt razing a city would be unjust. I had meant to include only cities north of 65 in my offer, but I see now that I was sloppy and simply said northern cities. I will stick to the agreement as stated and include all cities north of the line that connects the central temples (unless you also wish to exclude 65, in which case let it be so). If you wish to raze 65 this turn, be my guest, but after that it will be covered in our agreement. I include neither 08 Camelot nor 06 schist in the terms as they are not northern cities, but border cities. If you can get armies to schist, feel free to raze it. So, we are agreed. I am glad to find civility even as our armies yearn for each other's necks. -- Little Puppy, Slayer of Dragons Protector of Things Both Weak and Small And Yipping Tormentor of Greater Warlords SUMMARY: New City Builds: Giant Bats in 54 Horny Toad Start End Cities: 12 12 Gold: 2924 - 160 = 2764 Income: 452 452 Expenses: 184 184 Babyseal: 12 12 " ": 8 11 Accidental Death of White's First Disciple on the bridge near 14 Karma: WarBOT v1.0a Armyset: Tournament b1-4 WL version: Mac CD Intense Combat: Off Terrain: Open/bridge/swamp Hero Bonuses Non- For- TOTAL Minus Fly Natural Item Hero tify City Cancel BONUS Enemy Item -------------------------------------------------------------- ATT: 0 0 1 0 H *1* 0 No DEF: 1 3 0 0 0 *0* 0 Yes Entered Final Attack Units: Strength Strength Survival % --------------- -------- -------- ---------- Devil 7 8 0.74074 <- Lives! Choctaw 64’s inhabitants had awakened before sunrise and hurried to complete the last minute preparations. Apache’s change in plans had only arrived a half a day earlier and now the city was almost empty. Having stained their bodies in warpaint, the Lt. Cavalry unit and the Elemental were under way before the sun crested the horizon in the mountains to the east, but not before the city was set ablaze. By midday the red armies were poised outside of neutral city 66. The Lt. Cavalry charged the city furiously with the Elemental following closely behind. Both units knew what was to come and both fought with pride as any warrior would. The webs that were almost invisible to the riders were not seen by their mounts and all efforts to halt the advance were in vain. Shadows descended upon the first wave of attackers and within moments all of the cavalry soldiers’ bodies pulsed with lethal poison from the Spiders. As the shadowy figures carefully wrapped their future meals in sticky strands of web, the Elemental called forth the spirit of fire and the maze of webs erupted in flame. It paused to sing the souls of the fallen brethren to the stars, then renamed the city. Cedar Creek 66 would be the name of this city which was soon to light the mountain skies for days. Before the Elemental left Cedar Creek, it called upon the fire spirits again and the city erupted in flame. The sun slowly sank over the mountains to the west as the Elemental walked into 63 Slate City. As Apache had predicted, there would be no battle at Gem’s city, however there would also be no escape. Slate City was renamed to DreamCatcher 63 before the Elemental called upon the spirit powers for the last time. Flames from the burning city leapt towards the heavens as the sun disappeared from sight. The only sound besides the crackling flames was the lonely death song of the proud Elemental. -- To Little Puppy, He-Who-Plagues Greater Warlords, After much thought and preparation, I would have to agree that an Elemental for a Giant Worm is a good trade. However, an Elemental for a Ghost, leaving a Worm and an Archon perched on my doorstep, is not. That is why I have chosen my present course of action. Your northern production specialists and financial analysts are quite correct in their observations. Pillaging the scout productions in the cities you refer to could easily be replaced by lt.infantry or giant bats which would save my treasury a mere 15gp per city. The few gold is not that important at the moment. Even though the scouts in this day and age have been replaced by electronic surveillance, guidance, and warning systems, Apache does feel an affinity towards them as a result of his ancestry. They also serve as an added incentive for the crystal armies if they should choose to invade my lands. Congratulations on thinning Vetinari’s hero population! - Apache To Gem, Lord-of-Stones, The center cities would only serve to divert your attention from the real threat to your east. I have taken the liberty of razing the southern most ones, since my efforts to hold or gain them would have been in vain, thereby allowing you to focus your efforts accordingly. Experiencing the brunt of your undivided forces will certainly test my prowess as a Warlord. Hauri" to all players; To the Great Apache, Brave Destroyer of Crystal Lands, My friend, let me beg from you forgiveness at my arrogant assumption that I could give advice to one such as you! I know many things poorly, and the southern battle appears to be one of them. My messengers had told me that your elemental would not make the city rightly called DreamCatcher 63 by sun-up, but they had made this observation in ignorance and without proper consideration. Worse, they informed me that Gem's ghost would not reach Choctaw 64, and so imagined that the battle there would be a close one. I will not presume again to give advice, as your own generalship is so clearly superior to the poor suggestions that I have to offer. Perhaps soon you will come assist me in the north! Indeed, I now understand why your cities are towering jewels above the lands they rule, while mine are mere hamlets, as I observed before. My armies are under standing orders to pillage cities of old production, whereas yours are benevolent and leave the people they join with undisturbed! What mercy! To imagine that the gains from my cruel ways are but a mere 15 gp (and a little less money to my enemies if they should ever take the city, but perhaps I have more to fear on that score than you). In my narrow thoughts I had imagined that you had actually built those units after pillaging them, but of course no! Great Apache, I have so much to learn in this war, from both enemies and friends, that I only hope I can manage to recall all of the lessons when the teaching is through. Again, I very humbly beg your pardon for my presumptuousness in imagining that I should advise your actions rather than learn from them. I do sincerely hope that I have not overly offended you with my egoism. -- Little Puppy, Slayer of Dragons Protector of Things Both Weak and Small And Yipping Tormentor of Greater Warlords _______________________________________________________________________________ The following message was sent on Thursday April 16, 1998 at 12:07 AM EDT by Holmes to all players; Little Puppy, He-Who-Nips-the-Flanks-of-Fleeing-Warlords, You flatter me with with your humble praise. My Grandfather has taught me a great deal, though, and from his teachings I gather that you are quite an inteligent Warlord. I have learned well from your advice in these early days of B09. Please do not hesitate to offer your thoughts in the future, for I fear I will have quite a battle upon my hands. In fact, I will be insulted if you refrain from your suggestions in these future days of war. I, in turn, will also add my thoughts on your situations, but so far I have nothing to offer up to the Great Puppy; your moves are like that of a chess Grand Master! You should worry less about your future holdings on the center cities now, unless Gem makes the fatal error of attempting to control one or more of them. I hope to bear his focused efforts on my front and after you have vanquished the White armies, maybe you can attack his flanks to aid my feeble efforts, if I am still fighting in this battle at that time. If he does choose to go northeast to the center, then I will certainly flank Vetinari's force for my brother-of-war, after ridding the continent of the Crystal armies. I am willing to bet, however, that you will beat me to that point, SoDPoTBWaSAYToGW! Hauri" to all players; On the morning of the seventh period, Little Puppy surveys the battlefield. The early success of the eastern alliance is greater than any could have predicted but a few days before. Apache, who earlier on spoke of fighting a losing war for honor, has forced the Great Gem into a chaotic retreat. Surely Gem will not be reeling for long, but Little Puppy sees that this Apache is a greater warlord even than the master Apache of many years ago, and he is overjoyed to have placed faith in the man as an ally. And today, far north, Little Puppy's heroes will strike a blow from which the renowned Lord Vetinari may never recover. Ah, it is a good day for battle. The forces of the weak and small may claim this planet yet. ---------- The Hero Pollywog emerges in 54 Horny Toad for 1096 gp and flies with a newly recruited giant bat to the ruin of the city NE Demon. Pollywog, being something of a dullard, does not even chuckle at the name. There he frees a demon who heads west. Pollywog is a new recruit, who has never before seen battle, but he did show promise in the hero competitions of days past. ----------- A griffin flies north and claims the neglected city 05 for Little Puppy, naming it 05 Pinky in honor of the little finger she doesn't have. Babyseal accompanies a devil to the lightly defended city 14 Karma. The inhabitants there, loyal to Lord Vetinari to the last and aware of the destruction planned near their great city, vow to refer to it as 14 Bad Karma ever after and fall to the yellow hero with barely a fight. The excitement of victory courses through the devil's veins and he heads west, crushing a unit of heavy infantry at the temple of the Elysian Fields Memorial Bridge. Having heard that the Second Disciple is hiding in the woods to the northwest, he goes searching for the holy man. Meanwhile, the nameless hero hitches onto a navy and heads north with her griffin companion. At the Memorial Bridge she gets off and looks around. Suddenly she sees Babyseal, who the nameless hero had expected would be busy guarding Bad Karma. The heroes hail each other and Babyseal requests silence. Babyseal: Nameless One, I have wondered since we first met on your familiarity. But now I have seen you battle and I know your name. You fight mightily, but after your insubordination of the last war, I tell you that I cannot lead an army of which you are a part. "": Babyseal, do not so handicap your forces! I am on the verge of a great victory, and your armies will be dispirited by such a show of power. Since we last battled together I have studied your ways of diplomacy and have learned their wisdom. I beg you to give me a second chance! Babyseal: I will not reconsider. You are one who cannot be led; there is no doubt in my mind on that matter. However, you are correct when you say that Little Puppy needs you in his forces. I have considered my decision well, and I now bow as I offer you the Yellow Standard. Lead us well, Gosling Puff, with might and with wisdom. Gosling Puff: Babyseal, you are truly a noble hero, and I will not disappoint your faith. Babyseal: I pray that this is so. Now that this thing is done, let me ask you, did you ever find a new minstrel? But Gosling Puff has already left into the forest carrying the Yellow Standard, and Babyseal heads back to Bad Karma, just barely reaching its safety before nightfall. Meanwhile, Gosling Puff meets up with the devil who has found the Second Disciple in the woods. Out of breath, but wanting to demonstrate that Babyseal's faith was well placed, Puff leaves the griffin to keep watch and, aided by the devil engages the Sec ond Disciple. The battle is over before it has begun.
