Here's an unusual situation for you - I am sending you the gamefile with my turn played; but *before* the 'official' file gets sent!!! ;-) (Since I was the one who created the file, I had a copy 'sitting' around - and thought I would get a jump start on things! ;-) ;-) ;-) ) Turn Report - B08, Turn 01, Side 1 (White) Start Turn: 1 city 13039 gold Actions: White Leader joins the force, and promptly releases the elemental in NW Elemental, and the ghost in NW Ghost.... Or more specifically, my Heroes of Hockeytown, the Detroit RedWings; and his legalized hooker hounds, the Habitants. Out of the pod emerges a dark figure known only as "Avenger". Taking up residence in the city designated 02, Avenger immediately took steps to stamp his mark on the land, renaming the city after his abandoned spaceship, the Marathon. After a careful search of the city, he discovered an apparent suit of armor standing alone in a storage closet. Closer inspection revealed it to be an artificial intelligence housing, but the former resident had long since deteriorated beyond recognition. "My conquest of these lands begins here," Avenger murmured. "I will transfer Leela's consciousness into this vessel. I hope providing her with mobility and the potential to serve me will prevent her slide into madness." He downloaded her matrix into the empty shell, and replaced the depleted power cell in the suit. The head rose, and the spark of life flared green in her eyes. "Go, find me allies to assist our struggle against these other powerful warlords." Leela moved north at his words, leaving Avenger to consider his next moves. As she moved off, he decided to provide her a ride back from searching the ruins and constructed a Giant Bat in Marathon (02). Leela obeyed the directive given her by her reanimator, and recruited a creature of the elements and a terrifying creature of the underworld to do Avenger's bidding. The ghost flew south towards potential conquests, and the elemental sped west to capture the city designated 22. Avenger, hearing of this success, decided that the city should be renamed WaldoWorld (22). As the day ended, he began preparations for uploading his second artificial intelligence companion from the escape pod. There must be another construct lying around somewhere..... And already discussions of alliances abound. The forces of Marathon shall not consider any permanent alliances - but we are willing to negotiate non- aggression treaties. But, why start now? Allow everyone a moment to determine their own strategies and then start making proposals. I am curious to see what offers of alliance the southern forces might suggest to the White Leader. ********************** Official Turn Report Template ********************** REPORT FOR TOURNAMENT ROUND B, GAME 08, TURN 01, SIDE 2. =========================================================================== New Hero? I live in a small town of Switzerland called Neuchatel where I study in a pregraduate level. My hobbies and favourite activities are tennis, skiing (I was skiing last week), swimming, reading, video and computers. Finally E-mail addresses are either "aubjf@mail.vtx.ch" or "julie@earthling.net". ***** As you can see, I'm from Switzerland and therefore I'm not a native English speaker. I have already to advertise you that I have only learnt English for four years at high school and I still do mistakes... So don't hesitate to ask me all needed clarifications if I'm not clear enough. ***** Finally, I need a rule clarification. I moderated several game until now and I always autorized one diplomatic message per turn between a turn report and the next turn of the same player. Now I just saw that Bill autorize per turn two diplomatic messages including turn reports. So I'm wondering if Ivan, or one of you, could tell me which is the correct interpretation of the rules... ***** Good luck in our upcoming battles and see you soon on battle fields! Let's face it, if either of us takes it, the other person will perceive it as a threat to their territory and do their best to capture it away from them, perhaps razing it in the process. I would prefer to have a chance to take it later in the game, letting troop management decide who gets to keep it, not fleetness of foot. I agree that peace between our people serves both our best interests in the opening stages of this war, and hope that you will agree to the following proposal: 1) City '06' remains neutral property until the end of Turn 7, at which point we can negotiate further based on current standings. 2) The East temple will be free to access for all troops for the same amount of time. Funny how as the process-- all three hours of it-- got more frustrating as I would sit down 40 minutes on Wed nite, then an hour on Thursday night, then an hour last night (Sat)-- that I would find myself changing strategies to suit the situation. Such as: "Okay, what would I do with an Elemental in my Capitol...?" and bizarre stuff like that. Finally, I just stuck to my guns and decided between coughing up the 1592 for what I wanted or taking the cheaper 3rd choice. I went cheap. :-( Best to you all. Sorry for the delay. Leela, ever dutiful, continued to move towards the northern flight item. Durandal, ever contrary, unleashed the powers of a Devil upon the land! Fortunately, the Achon accompanying Durandal was able to prevent it from causing any havoc to Avenger's own forces, and instead turned it northward to the neutral city of 21. The three other cities nominally within his territory also fell to his troops, and Avenger began eyeing his neigbors and trying to determine their ultimate plans. "Will they be satisfied with but one quarter of the world? I think not - these Warlords seem greedy and voracious in appetite - they must learn moderation! We shall make our sovereign lands as inhospitable as possible to these potential invaders - especially the speedy White armies!" Gandalf, I await a response to my proposal - if I do not hear from you next turn, I shall assume that you mean to combat me for possession of 06, and I think that will do neither of us any good. But, I'm sure I shall prevail since I will get there first! Iceman, I know you plan on making alliance decisions by the time you take your fifth turn - I am curious as to how you view our current state of affairs. I see it as a delicate balance upon which a misstep could be disastrous for either one of us. ********************** Official Turn Report Template ********************** REPORT FOR TOURNAMENT ROUND B, GAME 08, TURN 03, SIDE 2. =========================================================================== Statistics Start of turn Leela Exp. 6 Durandal Exp. 2 Cities 6 Gold 7104 Income 268 Expenses 37 Hero Durandal visits Ruin NE Devil and receives a Devil! "Same thing we've done every turn, Pinky-- TRY TO TAKE OVER THE WORLD!"} {Max Here} --And by this I mean I have solved our dilemma of trust. Normally, You would use your ghost to take 08 on next turn, and I would have used Ours to have taken 57. We then would have starred at each other for awhile, unable to make a safe move without trusting each other. I couldn't back out as you would be close, you couldn't start vectoring as I could then move on you and get a jump. By taking 58 instead, I have left 57 for next turn. (And, you can't take it this turn.) This why I have only 8 cities when I should have had 9. You can now take 08 with your ghost and LEAVE it empty, sending your ghost back to aid your hero (perhaps). I have no army nearby that threatens it! I must ask, though, that you leave the city in a direction back towards 11, so that I may leave 58 empty on MY next turn without fear of attack from your Ghost. {You may go to the temple, of course! :-) Just position safely away this next turn...} This way we benefit greatly-- You can start vectoring away TWO armies immediately (08 and 11) and I can start next turn by vectoring from 57 after my spider captures it. We then have a very solid, trusting border, as we have only slow (non-terrain) armies, and only ONE in each city. (In fact, you could leave 08 empty!) This way, you don't have a massive pile-up of Spiders in 11 while we hash out details of our treaty and trust of each other. You can send them away as I am no threat on that border, and we can quickly begin the business at hand. (And, *I* don't have to send any other armies up the road!) I hope you appreciate this timing. It seemed early to me, and I spent several iterations of the turn just taking 57 and doing a standard "detente". I realized this would hurt us both, and that you were right-- any successful attempt at an "alliance" must begin early. [We both have seemed to have picked up the attentions of our neighbors. You have the two yellow heroes headed for your border. I have the two Red ones on Mine.] RE: the Ruin. I suggest we leave that alone, at least until after Turn 7. We get third hero then. I'm not sure if money will be a problem or not. At the moment, doesn't seem it will be.... (But, I intend on grabbing the eastern ruin). However, I'm sure you agree that keeping our heroes away from our shared border makes each of us more comfortable. ;-) I don't think I really need the other flight item. Thus, I don't need to head that way, either. If you forego your other (thus, why I also give you the freedom to retreat your ghost!), then we can get to the middle of the board that much faster! (I think Red might be headed already....) I hope you find this set-up to your liking. It hurts me somewhat this turn and the next, but I think I ultimately gain enough to make it worth while. As I've head often enough: "Sometimes Peace of Mind is worth the Most!" I'm sure that both Yellow and Red are just vectoring armies from their home base areas outward and are just being cautious. (I'd do much of the same.) I don't think they'll be a problem for awhile. But, we must face the obvious fact-- they vectored towards each of US! (And, I thought Red moreso than Yellow.... :-( ) So, I'm not sure if you WANTED "peace" with me, Ivan! :*) But I think you'll admit that I've gone to great pains to guarantee trust from both of us. Hopefully, you'll think that's worthwhile... And that--eventually-- we can develop a solid "alliance". But I'm not demanding, as you asked and I'm now offering what I can-- a No Threat border. Once we've set up better over the next few turns, maybe we can work on some specifics, "alliance-wise"? At the moment, I just want Peace-- and No vectoring! :-) (ha ha) To The Others: 2) Avenger. Look at all that open area by Red. Wolfriders, Lt. Cavs.... you can take him. :-) 3) Gandalf. Well, you got 07 as promised. I will take the Ruin, if only because it's the only advantage on You I managed to get-- I can get there first! (small satisfactions are just that-- small. :-( ) You then plopped Devil on our border, which is surely more of a threat to ME than it was a defensive manuever for you. You've vectored Mean Stuff towards me. In fact, based on just your last turn, ALL of your mean stuff towards me! I gulped-- truly. :-) You've thus sent me scrambling. I will trust that you are just being safe, and I of course admit that it makes a lot of sense to vector the griffin and the elephant towards my border-- they make more use there than other places. (The griffin towards the *middle* would have been nicer! :*)) It's the catapult that got me. That only has ONE usage-- and it doesn't like walking through the woods by itself. :( I'll watch how this develops--carefully. Madmax decided not to occupy 57 and proposed you an alliance not because he likes Iceman population, but because he is afraid of us the Wizzards. Fortunately you have not answered and therefore we wanted to suggest you a better proposition... We analyze that your war will soon burn with the nord-eastern Warlords Avenger and you will need high productions to keep your cities sure from any attacks... At the same time, we are planning our first assaults on southern central Madmax's cities... Considering his last move, he vectored nearly all his troops towards us leaving his back not or badly defended... So why not using your few units north of his territory to get extra cities while I keep him busy... See the advantages: You will get extra cities, extra incomes, additional purchased production for only few units... It would certainly help you in your war against Avenger, interesting no? At the same time we will keep him busy enough for you to get harmless extra cities and ourself we will take less damage because he will have to split his forces and loose time... Let's your alliance be effective! * Diplomacy with Keiran; Avenger; Yellow: >Look at all that open area by Red. Wolfriders, Cavs. you can take him. We wanted you to notice that it would be a diplomatic mistake to follow Madmax suggestions... First because we agreed a non-aggression treaty and secondly because it would cause us troubles and at the same time help much Madmax to be ready on time to face our first assaults. If we lost this advantage, we are afraid we won't be able to defeat main Madmax forces and we probably won't be able to help you if you are in difficulty with Madmax's northern ally Iceman. Considering Madmax diplomacy, we suggest you a similar alliance. We have played several Tournament style games and we noticed that it was completly fool to try to fight our two neighbours at the same time. We did once this mistake, so we know what we are talking about... So we propose you an alliance and to colaborate actively until it remains no more ennemy on the battle fields. We could fix the expiration of our alliance two full turns after either Madmax or Iceman is reduced to three cities or less. Of course other negotiation will be possible at that time. See the advantages of an alliance for both of us and let us know soon what you think about and what are you suggestions to improve our chances to rule this map before turn 20: - we can vector our troops towards the first line cities... Will gain troops. - we don't have to defend one border of our territory... Will gain troops. - we can use from now two heroes against your direct ennemy and let the remaining ruin unexplored for our third hero on Turn 7... Will save time. - we can help us and exchange tactical comments if we catch an hidden opportunity from one of our ennemy... Will reduce surprise attacks. * Diplomacy with Max; Madmax; Blue: >Well, you got 07 as promised. At the same time we will >keep him busy enough for you to get harmless extra cities and ourself we will >take less damage because he will have to split his forces and loose >time... Let's your alliance be effective! However, as interesting a proposal as you make, your continuance of diplomacy makes your proposal a fearful reminder of 'Warlord Diplomacy!!!' To witt: Red to Yellow: >We wanted you to notice that it would be a diplomatic mistake to >follow Madmax suggestions... First because we agreed a non-aggression treaty >and secondly because it would cause us troubles and at the same time help >much Madmax to be ready on time to face our first assaults. If we lost >this advantage, we are afraid we won't be able to defeat main Madmax >forces and we probably won't be able to help you if you are in >difficulty >with Madmax's northern ally Iceman. Ah - even while attempting to turn me from the Blue Warlord's proposals, you are making diplomatic moves that show your intentions are NOT fully honourable!!! >So we propose you an alliance and to colaborate actively until it >remains no more ennemy on the battle fields. We could fix the expiration of >our alliance two full turns after either Madmax or Iceman is reduced to >three cities or less. Of course other negotiation will be possible at that >time. Again the talk of an Alliance *against* Blue and *White*.... Yet previously there was an attempt at diplomatic relations with White..... Where is thine Honour, Warlord?!?! Red to Blue: >As we are in advanced negotiation with Avenger, we had to find an objective >for our ground troops and therefore we decided to put pressure on >your nation. But at the time we took our turn, we were still not fixed >if we >would be at war against you or not... We were waiting your >diplomacy >particulary with Iceman... So - by this I must take it that even the call of an Alliance from Blue to White has settled things!!! This is unfortunate - if things had settled in a little more I would have had an interesting proposal for you!!! However - based on the way things have settled, I guess that it is the 'classic' East-West development in this game!!! > We noticed from the Practice Round that Catapults can be very >useful... Have a Good One!!! _______________________________________________________________________________ The following message was sent on Monday March 16, 1998 at 11:07 PM EST by Keirster to all players; I think it's an appropriate time for me to address some of all this diplomacy that's flying around here....... BLUE: >>> 2) Avenger. Look at all that open area by Red. Wolfriders, Lt. Cavs.... you can take him. :-) <<< Gosh, thanks! I might have missed that! Of course, if I focus on Red, White comes in and bombs me back to the stone age! I base any alliances or suggestions on how MY best interests will be served. As long as my best interests are served by not attacking Red, he is safe from the North. Besides, I did offer that non-aggression pact and I can't simply discard it if it becomes inconvenient. >>> Considering Madmax diplomacy, we suggest you a similar alliance. We have played several Tournament style games and we noticed that it was completly fool to try to fight our two neighbours at the same time. We did once this mistake, so we know what we are talking about... <<< No argument there..... unless your opponents are also in two-front wars..... RED: >>> So we propose you an alliance and to colaborate actively until it remains no more ennemy on the battle fields. We could fix the expiration of our alliance two full turns after either Madmax or Iceman is reduced to three cities or less. Of course other negotiation will be possible at that time. <<< Not interested, sorry. I don't believe either one of these Warlords will be reduced to chowder that quickly! My plan is to hold on to what I have, and if someone makes a stupid mistake to take advantage of it. That means that I would recommend you keep one or two armies defending your border cities after Turn 07 - unless we make another treaty. WHITE: >>> {your fifth turn - I am curious as to how you view our current state of affairs. I see it as a delicate balance upon which a misstep could be fatal.} At this point, I knew that diplomacy would be the name of this turn!!! I see things as VERY dangerous!!! <<< Actually, I don't! Yes, you could invade me and do huge damage - if you did, I would be forced (reluctantly) to return the favor. As I will have a flying Hero and cancel-Hero ally stack in the near future, I suspect I would catch your hero and kill him before you could do me the same favor. But, if that happens, and we put three or four cities each to the torch, Blue and Red suddenly put aside their prior differences and march north! (I'm sure that's what you and I would do, given an opportunity by two foolish warlords!) So, I must conclude that if you are motivated by enlightened self-interest, you are also not interested in conducting a massive invasion of my territory - at least, not just yet! My vectoring is again defensive in nature - I want to have a Griffin near the center so I can take my Hero inside and capture those juicy central cities! It will also help if you did decide to invade with a flying stack. Anyway, I'm perfectly willing to contest for the center cities and the temple (although maybe we could work something out) but your home cities do not interest me. TO ALL: To sum up, good fences make good neighbors! You keep out of my back yard, and I'll keep out of yours. I won't enter into any permanent alliances, but when I make an alliance of any kind I'll stick with it until it's over. Avenger P.S. Some of this may be moot...-M] First off, I realized that maybe *most* of you don't know the story behind "Pinky and The Brain." {Most likely Frederick doesn't. I now guess maybe Ivan doesn't, either. Kieran? Bill? BOB?} So, I should probably give a little background. Maybe then you'll get the "gag", and Ivan will understand the "jabs". :*) "Pinky and The Brain" is a cartoon. [Produced by Steven Spielberg.] The necessary info is in the opening song, which I'll repeat below for your knowledge and amusement: [Every show starts with the following dialog, followed by the song.] Pinky: "Gee, Brain, whaddaya wanna do Tonight?" The Brain: "The same thing we do every night, Pinky: TRY TO TAKE OVER THE WORLD!" {song} They're Pinky and The Brain, Yes Pinky and the Brain. One is a Genius The other's Insane. They're laboratory mice. Their genes have been spliced. They're Pinky, they're Pinky and the Brain, Brain, Brain, Brain, Brain.... Before the night is done Their plan will be unfurled By the dawning of the sun They'll take over the World! They're Pinky and The Brain, Yes Pinky and The Brain. Their twilight campaign Is easy to explain-- To prove their mousey worth, They'll overthrow the Earth! They're Pinky, they're Pinky and the Brain, Brain, Brain, Brain, Brain....... [end] There are two running gags. One is that Pinky never knows what Brain is thinking (and makes whimsical observations while Brain is biting and cynical). The other is that The Plan always fails.... :-/ (Think: "Gilligan's Island") Thus, I thought incorporating this into my roleplaying would be a Hoot, as (ultimately) We *do* try to "take over the world" in Warlords, and *I* get a chance to be both an Idiot (Pinky) and a Genius (Brain)! Helps explain My game..... (ha ha). So, snipes and jabs at Moderators and other Players are just part of Pinky and the Brain failing to be on the same wavelength. (They usually make jabs at "Olson Twins" movies and Barbra Streisand). And the boast of "taking over the world" is just what it seems-- A boast by a Lab Mouse that never succeeds! In the Cartoon, some of the plans are as "simplistic" as what I've portrayed: In one, Brain tries to build a large DRYER so as to confuse the world with massive Static Cling! He then presumes he can just assume power in the ensuing Chaos... {For point of interest, my Cousin got me into this show. She works at the CDC in Atlanta. Thus, after *years* of research work (she's now an administrator) she found the whole idea of Spliced Lab Mice trying to take over the world to be hilarious :-) } I'd planned during Round A to Roleplay these two for Round B, as my roleplaying fell short in that Round. It is unfortunate that I'm thus roleplaying for players who perhaps haven't ever seen the show.... :-( Anyway, hope you (now?) get a laugh out of some of this.... :-) Now, onto the Business At Hand! 1) Iceman. You're right. I meant 44. (See? Obvious I changed my turn--notes are all messed up! :/ I get it now -- 44 would be the mirror of 11. ) You'll understand more of what I meant when you play the turn. Without my ghost in 44, your area is immediately "safe". Thus, you don't have to keep anymore armies there. Also, you don't have to worry about my vectoring before you move-- it is a two turn move (or more, unless "scouted") between our cities by spiders . Were I to go back on my word, you'd have plenty of warning to redirect your (one-turn) vectoring back home and recover. Thus, I wouldn't, and We have a beautiful, "low effort/low garrison" border from now on! :-) :-) :-) Other things: a) Your Pegasus I actually viewed as vectored towards the middle (and water to fly over) more than towards me. But thanks for the warning! :-) b) I'm sorry you didn't intend on 08. Your ghost was a step outside 11, I guess I didn't really think where else it would go....? (One of the advantage to moving first is to get to the middle cities....) 2) Avenger. I admire you for sticking to yourself! I wanted to, especially this early. Iceman asked for alliance offers-- I had to indicate I was ultimately interested (and he liked hearing that.) But, basically, my hand was forced-- the one thing that NO ONE has denied was Red's intention to attack ME (Blue.) Red made an offer to You. He also made an offer to White. (Didn't make one to Me.. :-() He obviously wants Someone to help him-- either against me, or at least not against him. His vectoring is done-- that's the One fact that can't be changed. I wish you luck in whatever you choose to do. I think you'll find that, just because Red has already professed his intention to come at me, this doesn't mean that others are so inclined to start fighting early. You may be able to keep a rather long peace with White as well, if you desired. 3) Gandalf. I could ask "Why?", but it wouldn't matter. I think "Why NOT?" probably works, too! :*) As you haven't denied your aggressive intentions, I look forward to a "spirited" battle. () "Happy thoughts, happy thoughts...." :*) THE WRENCH in THE WORKS: {Gandalf asks Iceman for "assistance"} Iceman: You know as well as I that you can't manage a successful "raid" on my back door (as described by Gandalf) with anything at the moment. It would be several turns in the offering. But I appreciate Red's mumblings-- I'd asked Yellow to take an extra look at Red, so..... Touche~ :*). But, Gandalf also indicated something else-- that lack of interruption to my vectoring HOLDS HIM OFF. Thus my insistence that WE get our vectoring a little jump start. I think our "manipulation" of armies will prove our skill and give us the advantage we need, esp. by starting this early in the game. I know what you mean about feeling that this has been "thrust upon you." But know that I believe that sticking to our truce and working on an alliance will ultimately be better for BOTH of us in the long run, than if we think that "playing the field a little longer" will give us better options. Perhaps Red or Yellow would be better allies for You? But they hadn't paid heed to your request, nor shown very friendly intentions. Thus, I did my best to show you I was "true Blue" (ha ha). Had I intended on seeking *any* confrontation with you, I'd have moved differently. (Took 44.) I did my move for the express purpose of showing You that a) I could be compromising, and b) I wish you no harm and could Guarantee It! {Great traits in a neighbor, eh? ;-) ;-) ;-) } I think our strength will be in playing well with what we've been dealt (*shown* by the others, that is) and building on that. I hope you agree that cooperation early will serve us far better than confusion later. You may doubt my abilities, but trust that I don't doubt yours. I'd have allied with anyone in this game. (Read: I think everyone of us is a solid player.) But, You seemed the best choice, Turn Three to Me. In More IMPORTANT news: That's 14 pts with only 15 games left. I'll make sure I meet Bill in person and give him a bottle! (So, don't think of it as losing to me: You'll lose to all the Warlords in the Boston Area! Gary, John, Bill,.....) :*) MadMax _______________________________________________________________________________ =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Tournament Game: "B08" Turn Number: 4 Gamefile Sent To: MadMax (mtmgsmax@aol.com) Date Sent: Friday March 20, 1998 at 10:47 AM EST Date Gamefile Due: Monday March 23, 1998 at 10:47 AM EST -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- _______________________________________________________________________________ The following message was sent on Friday March 20, 1998 at 12:50 PM EST by "aubjf" to all players; Hail Warlords, Max, yes I know what Pinky and the Brain is. Sincerly, Frederick PS: Interesting idea for a roleplaying *************************************************************************** ***** Round: Second Round (B) Game: Black (08) Turn: 4 Side: Wizards (Red, 1) A) DIPLOMATIC PROPOSITIONS: (what an interesting alliance and diplomatic game!) * Diplomacy with Ivan; Iceman; White: >Red Warlord - so much hostility, so early in the game!!! Is it >arrogance - or are you really that formidable an opponent?!?! Maybe a >NW/SE Alliance will rear its head yet???? We don't want at all to be arrogant or hostile (perhaps my diplomacy in English didn't reflected correctly what I thought in French). We are only loocking forward to have interesting battles (see my note to Mad Max) and we conclued that allying us against a single ennemy could only provide us advantages... Of course not for the alone player... So nothing is too late, we offer you again this alliance against Mad Max, or at least not being your direct neighbour, a long term non-aggression treaty which would let us fight our first opponent. What do you say about a treaty until turn 12 or would you prefer a two-turn advance notice for the resiliation? >Ah - even while attempting to turn me from the Blue Warlord's >proposals, you are making diplomatic moves that show your intentions >are NOT fully honourable!!! >Again the talk of an Alliance *against* Blue and *White*.... Yet >previously there was an attempt at diplomatic relations with White..... >Where is thine Honour, Warlord?!?! Our Honour is not in question here. We are facing a possible alliance between blue and white... So we are loocking a support because two against one would be a pure madness. It's the reason we are loocking to ally with Avenger... Of course even if you ally you with Mad Max we are hopping to keep intact our non-aggression arrangement and in return we wouldn't support our respected ally against you (without supporting you too)... * Diplomacy with Keiran; Avenger; Yellow: >Not interested, sorry. I don't believe either one of these Warlords will be >reduced to chowder that quickly! My plan is to hold on to what I have, and if >someone makes a stupid mistake to take advantage of it. That means that I >would recommend you keep one or two armies defending your border cities after >Turn 07 - unless we make another treaty. >Gandalf, thanks for conceding city 06 to me. I am moving my Ghost away >from your territory - I plan to get it blessed at the temple and then move >it towards the center. I will vector production out of The Rose (06) >towards the center as well, as long as you put no army in a position where >you can take it from me. Feel free to get your ghost blessed at the >temple if you want, I only ask that you send it southwest for its >remaining movement so that I do not feel threatened by it. Avenger, first we wanted to thank you not to have followed evil Mad Max advices. It prooves us (even if we didn't doubt at all) that you are a fair and honest warlord and we are glad to meet you in this Tournament game. So after this introduction, let's come in more serious things. You declined our proposition and it makes us sad. Indeed we see an important western alliance in developpement and we are afraid to have to retreat in front of Mad Max if we can get the support or at least the neutrality of our respected northern neighbour. So we suppose that the terms we proposed didn't suit you and now we are loocking to sign another alliance. We will try to propose you again something, but feel you free to tell us what you don't like and what you'd see and we will be happy to negotiate a treaty which would suit each of us... What about an alliance with free access the east temple, possibility to leave our eastern city lightly defended (no more than two units) and finally borders fixed on central line trough the signpost between the two high-incomes cities. Of course this alliance could be eternal, end when one of our first ennemy is reduced to three cities or be resiliated with a two turns advance notice. So tell us what you would see, what you would eliminate, which end you prefer (we prefer the second one). * Diplomacy with Max; Madmax; Blue: >Gandalf. I could ask "Why?", but it wouldn't matter. I think "Why NOT?" >probably works, too! :*) As you haven't denied your aggressive intentions, >I look forward to a "spirited" battle. We didn't want to break anything you could think about us, but we conclued that staying at peace with our two neighbours wouldn't help us to get the high rank we need in Round B. So considering the first turns, Avenger moved west and you moved more east than north. So it would have be annoying for each of us (Avenger, you and me) if we had to reorganize our troops to be prepared to a north/south war... and in this situation Iceman would have got an high advantage... So we hope I answered why... RL: So let's have a funny war and in reality isn't a war more interesting? I'm just wondering who your third hero is going to be.... Anyway, Gandalf writes: >>>What about an alliance with free access the east temple, possibility to leave our eastern city lightly defended (no more than two units) and finally borders fixed on central line trough the signpost between the two high-incomes cities. Of course this alliance could be eternal, end when one of our first ennemy is reduced to three cities or be resiliated with a two turns advance notice. So tell us what you would see, what you would eliminate, which end you prefer (we prefer the second one).<<< Again, I agree to the terms of the truce but not the duration. I am glad to see you vectoring troops away from our border in the same way that I am. However, I am not prepared to commit to an agreement for any longer than through the end of turn seven. At the end of turn seven, I am very willing to reopen negotiations - you have conducted yourself with honor and I believe you will continue to do so. As fair warning, I plan on taking the center cities - if you contest me for them I shall fight you there, while keeping the peace on our border. Durandal reached the Northern temple. The machine paused, searching its databanks for the correct phrase to use at the temple. The archon awaited silently. A spider, a wolf, and an elemental all joined Durandal at the temple, waiting for the key phrase to be spoken. Finally, buried in long- unused databanks, it found the long-lost information and kneeled at the temple to recite it in its precise, clipped tones: "Ah, Sweet Yellow Health, I Drink Of Thee!" The supplicants were surrounded by a powerful yellow glow, and they all felt the North Temple's blessing upon them. Meanwhile, defenses were strengthened in the northwest in response to the buildup of White forces. The city of 62 was taken with the first loss of any troops, an orcish navy which distracted the defending spiders, which were then killed by the elemental streaking into the city. Unfortunately, the existing spiders were unable to be turned to the side of Avenger, and were reluctantly destroyed by the elemental. All was not lost, however, as new spiders were recruited to Avenger's side and turned to defending the inner cities. ********************** Official Turn Report Template ********************** REPORT FOR TOURNAMENT ROUND B, GAME 08, TURN 05, SIDE 2. =========================================================================== Statistics Start of turn Leela Exp. 9 Durandal Exp. 5 Cities 11 Gold 4518 Income 388 Expenses 111 Hero Durandal visits North Temple and receives a blessing! Now check out what *I* remembered to Do. General opinion: Isn't the fun the main tournament goal? I think so. And I personnally prefer strong, tactical and clever battles to a passive play... So our swords will be crossed except if we can reach an unexpected agrement and it's not in my nature not to come back on a decision... >Geez, Frederick: Won't it s-ck when the Round A results come out and we find >out that our Northern Brethren are ranked higher than US...? Oh well... Personnally, I really need a great result in Round B and it doesn't let me many choices... So diplomacy is important and nothing should be definitively settled (even our eventual upcomming war)... and you could be right and it would be perhaps more useful not to fight eachother... I'm now nearly sure that Avenger (and perhaps Iceman) did better than us in Round A rankings. Now let's come back in the fictive world. Considering the actual developpement, we are ready to switch our first target to Avenger... Indeed we will be never sure that he won't attack us as long as he doesn't agree to sign the treaty which seems us now outside his game conception... Now he is claiming for all the center cities. It shows quite arrogant pretentions and probably an high self-confidence. In other words, a real ennemy for all his opponents... So it means that instead of fighting you, we could massively move towards him this turn... But it requires that we agree on a pact and it could end your western alliance if you can't come and help us against Avenger or accept to stay quietly in your corner. So let us know what you thing after considering our following suggestion. The Wizards now propose to explore the devil ruin (I found a way to get it and it would be logical I get it now) and then to retire all their troops toward northern territories to face Avenger's forces... At the same time, you will move all your troops toward either Iceman or Avenger trough the center... The advantages are: - you will be able to use in a cleverer way your forces than destroying each other and reduce our chances in Round B which are already quite low... - you will get an advantage not having vectored any armies and therefore be able to attack much sooner our northern neighbours... see the gold, cities you could get in extra without any militar cost... - your hero command items will be useful because no devil or archon are located near the borders with our northern neighbours... the time they will arrive, your heroes would have done already much dammages... - you won't loose your demon, griffin, elemental trying to defeat my devil and my dragon on the devil ruin wich would much more reduce both of our armies than anything else... - you won't lose any other allies than the devil (I was planning to get the worm in other cases and perhaps even the demon) In conclusion, we propose you to switch our targets to be able to cooperate against our respective opponents which are probably higher ranked than us... The only thing, you will have to accept is to fly back with your flying hero and not to try to defeat either my dragon and/or my devil on the ruin. You shouldn't see any problems as we will reach the ruins in all cases and that your hero won't be able to take and undefended city... Avenger _______________________________________________________________________________ The following message was sent on Thursday March 26, 1998 at 12:59 PM EST by MTMGsMax to all players; Hey all: Oooh... Diplomacy! 1) Gandalf. I appreciate your words. It seems true to me that we will bang our heads for awhile and likely not succeed. I'm VERY reluctant to go back on Iceman. Not only because I gave him my word, but because this is very much my own doing, and equally tough to backtrack everything because of the position that YOU put me in. However, I AM agreeable to laying off of waging war, because I am in agreement with much of your assessment: namely, that Avenger needs to be dealt with. It seems quite possible, considering Iceman's position, that Avenger can become king of the hill in the middle and outdo all three of us. Thus, If you think you'd like to give him a shot, I still stand behind my original statement-- I will NOT cross your border. Providing of course that you still allow me the gold ruin that I asked for earlier, as well as uninhibited access to the Devil Ruin. Being the player that goes last, I have many turns of "development" that I can and wish to do: temple, ruins, production, etc. I have some cities that still haven't produced their first army yet! I have been responding only to the threat that you've shown me: this included my truce with Iceman (as he was in a similar boat up north). I can very easily change my pattern IF *both* my borders decide to leave me alone. As for allying with you: perhaps it is possible, eventually. I, too, would like to get to the middle of the board and perhaps the two of us will do a more agreeable job of splitting it up than the others? Remains to be seen. I think the best I can guarantee you at the moment is this, Gandalf: As long as you don't continue to pursue your current path, neither will I. Unfortunately, you've already done so much vectoring (the catapult, etc) that it will take you several turns just to pull that stuff out of there. But, I agree that Avenger, esp, looks to be gaining an advantage early. I also think that you can do something about him: talent and production wise. Why don't we try for something like this? Turn 10. We'll base it on "performance". That gives you time to set up and change your vectoring, and me time to set-up and just get some more armies on the board. At that time, if we like how each other has "progressed" and view that, for whatever reasons from the north, we think we can do a better job together than we've done apart, then perhaps we will try an alliance. In the meantime, I've found all of this early movement to be just that-- early. I'd have much rather have had the game go to Turn 7-10 without anyone "building up" anywhere, but that's just not how it went. I'm still *very* willing to have it go that way. As you've seen from my messages, I have nothing against YOU personally, Gandalf. I've just been responding to what I had to-- an obvious threat being sent towards Me. (I'm sure you'd have done the same.) The game is still very early in my opinion. I would easily accept peace for several turns (even later than turn 10?), if it seems to both of us that our successes lie elsewhere. At the moment, my "success" lies with staying out of fights for as long as possible. Thus my truce with Iceman, who seemed to need it as well to respond to his threatening border. I await your turn. I know you can't respond again, so I'll give you this as my word on this: I will put NO MORE on your border (read: 41) than is necessary to defeat whatever threat I see. Thus, as long as your "big armies" are in my area, I will have to try to defend against them. Were you to start moving some of them out of there, this would allow me to do the same and head towards the middle. (Frankly, that's where I'd thought your hero and dragon were going-- thought they were going to be blessed/quested *last* turn....) I realize this sort of means that you have to trust me first. As you saw by my actions with Iceman, I'm willing to appease neighbors to ease their mind. Unfortunately, as you will still be having some vectoring show up, I won't be able to do that so easily with you. Just trust that I DO NOT want conflict this early in the game, and that I won't provoke it. After all I've said here, I hope you'll believe me. And, on the lighter side: You couldn't REALLY get that Devil, could you?!? I figure-- as hinted in your message-- that you'd still have to sit in the ruin, where I could then kill you. Thus, I hoped you wouldn't do it. As you say, TOO much of a loss of armies, too early in the game. :-( My best to you, Gandalf. If you choose to continue with your attempts against me, then I look forward to a fun and honorable battle, even though we will likely NOT going to get a chance to repeat it in later rounds!!!! (Ouch!) :*) Madmax _______________________________________________________________________________ The following message was sent on Thursday March 26, 1998 at 07:08 PM EST by "aubjf" to all players; Hail Warlords, I'm leaving home for a one-week ski vacation from next Monday to next Friday, so please suspend the game when my turn comes... Sincerly, Frederick *************************************************************************** ***** Round: Second Round (B) Game: Black (08) Turn: 5 Side: Wizards (Red, 1) A) DIPLOMATIC PROPOSITIONS: * Diplomacy with Ivan; Iceman; White: We ask it you again. Even if our general diplomacy isn't settled yet, what about extanding until the end of Turn 14 our non-aggression pact in letting both of us the possibility to resign it with a two-turn advance notice... You will agree that we won't be in contact soon, busy enough with our two neighbours... * Diplomacy with Keiran; Avenger; Yellow: We didn't declare you the war and we will of course respect all the agreements we made. But we are claiming for the southern high-income city and we won't give it up as we did for 06... We changed our own strategy because we were afraid to see you ruling the center of the map as your last words could let it think... So now as long as you don't cross the central signpost and the west- east line, you don't threaten us with massive vectoring towards our borders and you leave the east temple access free, there should not have problems and we would be able to stay in good agreements... * Diplomacy with Max; Madmax; Blue: >As for allying with you: perhaps it is possible, eventually. I, too, would >like to get to the middle of the board and perhaps the two of us will do a >more agreeable job of splitting it up than the others? We agree... Let's see the evolution of this game in the next few turns... We would be perhaps glad to sign an alliance on Turn 10 when the situation will be clearer, but until that turn we can promise you that we won't cross the central north-south line anymore, we will leave the gold ruin for your hero, we won't search other ally than the SW Devil and we will leave a free access to the temple... as long as you aren't in position to attack our territory... After much reflexion about his turn, we reached a compromise... We will play this transition turn for half as we planned last turn including taking the SW devil and moving our Sir Gandalf and his armies towards your border city, but at the same time, we reorganized all our vectoring towards the center cities to remove pressure... So we did half of a step in the direction of the peace... So now you have the choice, if you decide to kill my dragon and my second devil as you can do it sacrificing your demon and your elemental, we will be forced to continue the war and you should prepare you to face our strong arrival... but if on the other hand, you start moving your armies this turn towards the center, we will be able to progressively come back in our natural territory and march in the direction of the central cities... So you don't have to worry about Elrond who is at the moment in your territory with his dragon and his devil and about Gandalf who is actually marching towards your border city as long as you aren't in position to attack us... We will certainly withdraw them next turn... Let's our friendship brings many benefits and advantages... Awaiting your opinion...
