This cannot stay this way, he thought. He went off exploring some nearby ruins and found an elemental and a ghost who were willing to join the quest for world dominance. The speedy elemental immediately charged north and incorporated New Hope into the emerging empire. Training of powerful armies was started in the two cities in the hope of a bright future. Rumors begin to spread among the populace -- of a gaunt, intense monk, preaching a new salvation, a salvation to rise out of the ashes of the old order. Jareth bar Belford, for that is the name of this monk, commands the attention of all who hear his message, wherever he travels. The scarecrow-like proportions of the monk, at 6'7" and 168 pounds, combined with the intensity of his gaze and the odd skin condition that has given his flesh a purplish cast, combine irresistably to draw in his audience. His voice sinks to a barely audible whisper, then rises in a steady crescendo as he thunders his message across a crowd: "Rise, children and follow me! Together we shall throw off the shackles of the United Nations and lead new lives of spiritual purity as free men and women." In one such crowd, in the metropolis of Illefarn, a man, nay -- barely a boy --, hears the new master speak, and his life is forever changed. For on that day, the young aristocrat Percy Blakeney becomes the first to swear fealty to Jareth. Prostrate before the tall monk, he gives his pledge to throw aside all worldly posessions and serve Jareth in any way he can. Jareth, used to polite indifference at best, and the more typical open hostility, is momentarily taken aback by young Percy's fervor. Could it be that his message is finally taking root? Clasping the young man's shoulders, he says, "Percy, thou art a rock and on this rock I will build my kingdom. Go now into the hills and seek you there the allies that will assist us toward our goals." Percy is unable to contain his enthusiasm for his new life's work and virtually flies to the southwest. Rounding a corner on the ancient roadway he stumbles across some ruins. Sword in hand, he enters cautiously, only to lose the sword as a tornado of activity sweeps by. He is stunned to see an enormous head materialize out of the swirling dust. Might this be one of the fabled elementals? It is almost too much to dare hope for, but, recalling the inspiration of Jareth's words, he invites the creature to join with him. Gales of barrelling laughter emerge from a huge mouth. "Silly human, I came to find you to invite _you_ to join me! Follow Clyde....." Without another word, the giant talking head speeds to the north. With little fanfare, Clyde eliminates the sole Eagle Scout defending the city of Derby (43). To prevent any counter-insurgency, he destroys the scout headquarters, recovering 175 GP in the process, and orders the production of elephants. Meanwhile, Percy has recovered from his lightning-quick encounter with Clyde and proceeds further southwest, finally coming to a box canyon, where he sees a dilapidated house sitting in the middle of the canyon mouth. Moving slowly, he enters the house. It is darker than he had imagined and he hastily lights a torch, only to scream and drop the light as a hideous visage appears before him. Out of the darkness a creaking voice grates "I ssseeeek only to sssserrrve, Masssttterrr. Tell my your willllll." Hastily recovering his courage and his light, Percy calls out "Show yourself, friend, if friend you be." He manages to keep his eyes open as the pale, insubstantial form gradually solidifies into the shape of a old man. "Go now and seek treasure to glorify our leader, Jareth bar Belford." With only a swish to mark its passage, it disappears to the north. Back in Illefarn (04), Jareth bar Belford takes a brief respite from his preaching, long enough to disband the Boy Scout troop and to order the production of pegasi. He surveys the day's events and smiles. Starting with 0 cities, 13045 GP, 64 income and 19 expenses, his followers have already amassed 2 cities, at a cost of 3500 GP, leaving 9720 GP in the treasury, with 112 income and no expenses. His right hand man, Percy, has gained a total of 6 XP to a new total of six. What a difference a day can make. Yesterday he had been preaching to deaf ears; today, he had a small but rapidly growing army! He seeks guidance on where next to take his message of freedom and self-salvation. As he slips ever deeper into a meditative trance, an image seemingly begins to form in the air above his head. It is the face of a young woman standing in front of a large manor. Somehow, Jareth knows that this woman lives in Derby, and that is where he must travel. **************************** Several days later, the Baroness Orczy opens the door of her summer estate and confronts an intense man in a monk's habit. She is momentarily startled by the odd purplish hue of his skin, but only for a moment, for she finds herself unable to tear her gaze away from his hypnotic eyes. "May I come in?", he asks. The Baroness is surprised to hear herself murmur "Yes" and usher a total stranger into the sitting room of her estate. But somehow, she can feel that this is "right" and that her destiny is tied up with the odd-looking stranger before her. ***************************** A few hours later, Baroness Orczy calls her startled servants together and tells them that she must leave them to follow the Master. "Please continue with your tasks and hold the estate in good order until I return. The Master has contributed 1135 GP for your continued maintenance in my absence. Use it wisely." With those words, she turns and walks out into the gardens. Her servants gather at the windows, drawn by a strange white glow from outside. Murmurs of shock and consternation run through the crowd as the Baroness takes the hand of a white, shining figure with enormous wings, and rises rapidly into the air. ****************************** His recruiting done for the nonce, Jareth collapses onto his sleeping pallet in a room little different from the one he had occupied in Illefarn only days before. He awaits the arrival of the trance that will help him to integrate all the complex messages he has received over the past few days about the activities of his various allies........ Clyde the elemental reports that 46 has fallen easily to his assault yielding 175 GP. Clyde renames the city Benalia and begins to muster giant spiders from the surrounding fields. He has to bribe the mayor with 700 GP to permit the use of the town stable to house the huge beasts. Further south, Casper the ghost has pillaged the town of 42 for 175 GP and renamed it Soubar. Soubar has long had a reputation as the source of the finest war horses in the land, and Casper tacks up a sign on the town bulletin board offering recruitment bonuses for any units of heavy cavalry that will join the Master's army. With 1200 GP, he is able to initiate a slow but steady arrival of the ponderous horse troops. Ever energetic in his service to Jareth, Casper next turns his attention to 45. He has barely called out his challenge to the guards when a blood- curdling scream rings out from the watchtower. Startled, Casper rises to the battlements to see what could have so frightened the guards. But all he can find in the guard tower is a small puddle of yellowish liquid on the floor. Thankful that there is to be no fighting, for he is really quite friendly, Casper enters the city. It is completely deserted but for a small blacksmithy, where a short, swarthy man sweats over a piece of glowing metal. Soon, the two are engaged in conversation, and it is but a matter of hours before the dwarf has volunteered his services and that of his extended family. He does request a small stipend of 450 GP to cover care for his wife and children, to which Casper gladly agrees. "In honor of our new arrangement," he asks the dwarf, "what would you like to rename the town?" "How about Milbourn?," asks the dwarf. "Done!", says Casper, and takes the 175 GP he had garnered from the city treasury and orders it used to purchase new signs for the town hall. ********************************** Farther north, the newest recruit to Jareth's forces, the Baroness Orczy, prepares to assualt 47. The inhabitants seem determined to make a tougher fight for her than others had for her allies to the south. Relatively fierce fighting marks the move on the city gates, and just as the gates are finally forced, the Baroness finds herself face to face with a farmer with a huge pitchfork. She is able to dodge enough to avoid the intended deathblow, but still finds herself staring dully at the bloody tines embedded in her right shoulder. She is only dimly aware of her enormous winged companion calmly breaking the farmer into small pieces. As she slides into unconciousness, she says "Boy, that was one nasty pitchfork." Days later, she awakens to light streaming into her room from an open window. Groggily making her way to the window, she looks across the town plaza to what must be the city hall. But instead of the expected "47", it appears that someone has hastily inscribed "Nasty Fork" above the meeting place. She grimaces as she turns back to the silent figure standing in the corner of the room. "Ha ha -- very funny!" Her archon companion seems uncomfortable, and says "I had nothing to do with it! But I haven't felt safe since you've been asleep, so I made some compromises. I took the 175 GP we got from pillaging their militia center and kicked in some of our own cash to recruit some wolfriders. I think they can be really helpful in the right context, even if their howling does drive me nuts." ******************************* Cities 2/6 Gold 9832/6597 Income 112/268 Expenses 0/0 Baroness Orczy emerges in Derby with Archon for 1135 GP. I have no interest in haggling out the best deal, but rather want a firm commitment so I can focus my forces. Temujin, You wrote, "I'm interested in some kind of arrangement (maybe a truce or even an alliance). Let me know what you think." I am looking for a friend but you ask me to lock myself into a position of strategic inferiority. I seek a friendship of equality. It is a clever offer, and had you not made many other clever moves, I might be tempted to accept. With you holding Aspen and Good Faith against my #24 there is no balance of power between us. My city will crumble in the later turns against two cities production. Because of that, I am going to take Aspen even if I have to eventually raze #24 so I suggest you evacuate. That will restore a balance between us. Do with Aspen what you will, however, I think I will be first to the very center on Turn 6. I'm inclined to raze the cities there, but I would be willing to trade the southern central city, 66, or another central city to you for Aspen or more specifically not send it up in flames before you get there. I realize I've placed you in a small bind re Aspen and Good Faith. My purpose is to make you take a strong defensive position which you can easily do and not attack me. I chose not to raze Good Faith in the hope of our possibly coming a future agreement (and saving my Elemental). Regardless of what you choose re Aspen, from a position of equality, we can decide whether peace, total war, or limited war (for example with fighting only in the center) is the future. My position is open right now and I am unsure against whom I will proceed. I await your thoughts. Rorqual, Will the bloodshed never cease? I have no desire to fight against you but it seems the gods have other plans for us. Someone is having a jest I think. You have seen my open letter to Temujin. What are your opinions on war between our peoples? Peace is as likely as total war between Temujin and myself and you and I as well. I notice you deploy most strongly against Jareth bar Belford though perhaps I am mistaken. I also await your thoughts though I doubt either of us will resist for long our ancient quarrel. Jareth bar Belford, I do not mean to slight you re diplomacy, but I do not think we will fight barring the collapse of one of our neighbors. I wish you well. Btw I am curious about the "bar". Is this a personal designation? I recently read "Clash of Thrones" by George R.R. Martin and they used the "bar" designation for nobility. It's a great book. Any connection? Before making that decision, they had already burned down the city in their attempts to stay warm (or maybe the yellow armies lurking around had something to do with that decision). On another front, a ghost occupied another mountain town. Hopefully, that town will have a better fate than Aspen. My position is open right now and I am unsure against whom I will > proceed. I await your thoughts. Well, after much thought, I chose to raze and vacate Aspen. Your reasoning for two cities against one holds for me as well so that I did not want to turn it over to you. That leaves me out of 300 gold and still without production in Good Faith. Anyway, I'm still interested in an alliance. To avoid any backstabbing later on because of the need to expand even further, I propose to end the alliance automatically once one of us has a certain number of cities (20 - 25). This should never kick in if all four sides stay reasonable strong but it avoids the awkward situation in which to former allies suddenly have to fight for the whole world (happened to me on the receiving end in an alternate universe). As you can see, I'm still serious about an alliance and I await your response. It appears that the herald he had dispatched to report the happy progress of his message of freedom disappeared enroute to the Remailer Broadcast Center. Suspicion has fallen on agents of Temujin, as the herald's route took him close to the southern border city formerly known as 07. The subsequent capture of that city, now known as Retreat, tends to confirm this concern. Of course, no such effort to suppress the joyous news of Jareth's message of hope can long succeed. The truth cannot be contained. Thus, Jareth dispatches two heralds, to ensure that all of the important news will be shared with the entire world. Turn 3 Report Baroness Orczy, energized by her recovery from the pitchfork wound, flies eastward and easily convinces the inhabitants of 58 to join in her cause. One recalcitrant group of scouts cannot be turned to the light, and hence, has to be eliminated. Saddened by the needless violence, the Baroness turns all of the 175 GP left in their quarters over to Jareth. As the sun sets on the waters north of the city, it is clear to her that Seaview is a fitting name for the city. So many giant spiders have been attracted to the recruiting center in nearby Benalia that it soon is obvious that Seaview should take advantage of numbers and also house spiders. 700 GP produces the necessary quarters to house the huge beasts. Further east, a lone dwarf approaches the city of 57. Calling to the scout unit atop the castle parapet, he offers terms for an easy surrender. In reply, the scout pours hot oil over the doughty warrior. Enraged, the dwarf heaves a heavy grappling hook over the wall and pulls himself up to face the suddenly cringing scout. With a roar of anger, he picks the hapless man up and throws him screaming into the moat. "Hmmm -- that water is pretty deep", he notes, as he watches the bubbles slowly trickling to a crawl. "Hey -- good name for this place -- think I'll call it Waterdeep." Wandering through the streets of the newly named city, he finds 175 GP scattered here and there. Of greater interest, however, is a small woman who is standing in the town green, wielding a huge composite bow easily two feet taller than she is. Despite its great size, she seems to have no trouble readily hitting the bullseye in a target 200 yards away. Impressed, the dwarf asks her if she would be interested in hiring on to train others to shoot arrows the way she has amply demonstrated. Eyeing the diminutive man with some disdain, she replies "Sure -- for a thousand GP", and turns away, apparently satisfied that her ridiculously high request will send him packing. Thus, she is stunned when he replies without hesitation "Done! I'll expect you here tomorrow at 7 am to begin training. Casper meanwhile, has traveled to 41, where there is a repeat of the experience he had had at 42 (now Soubar). As he rises above the castle walls, the defenders have once again fled, leaving behind a poor remnant of scouts, easily overcome and yielding up 175 GP. The city is now completely empty, making it fitting for Casper to rename it Ghost Town. Casper has made friends over the years with a family of griffins and he sends out a mental call requesting that they come join him in Ghost Town. He spends 1700 GP to prepare a suitable sleeping and training center for his soon to arrive friends. Finally, an elemental travelling north manages to take 44 with almost no blood shed, and pillage the city for 175 GP. With the city almost buried in the woods, it seems most appropriate to rename it Woodland. Pikeman, happy to once again have some use for their talents, are recruited to man the city walls, a bargain at 500 GP. The end of the day sees Blakeney remaining the same at 6 XP, with Baroness Orczy gaining 2 XP to 4. To recap: Start End Gold 6865 3665 Cities 6 10 Income 268 364 Expense 30 30 Baroness Orczy takes 58, pillages for 175, renames Seaview, builds spiders. Dwarf takes 57, pillages for 175, renames Waterdeep, builds archers. Ghost takes 41, pillages for 175, renames Ghost Town, builds griffins. Elemental takes 44, pillages for 175, renames Woodland, builds pikeman. Baroness Orczy goes up 2 to 4 XP and Percy Blakeney stays the same at 6. ************************************************************* Turn 4 Report Continuing the activity of the previous day, the Elemental moves northwest to the frontier town of 08. At first, it appears there will be no opposition. The elemental nods its great head, for this is what he has come to expect when the Master's message is presented. With such a straightforward and rewarding philosophy, how could anyone _not_ wish to throw their lot in with Jareth? But just as he turns to leave, a group of young, brownshirted pre-teens attempts to overwhelm him with a gang attack. Tossing his enormous head from one side of the street to the other, it is only a matter of a few moments before the pitiful scout unit is completely destroyed. Recognizing that the Scout movement is temporarily defeated but certainly not gone, the elemental calls for a muster of heavy infantry before leaving 08, now renamed to High Pass. 300 GP is enough to outfit an entire regiment of infantry, and the elemental leaves, confident that High Pass is in good hands. Meanwhile, Baroness Orczy flies west to a small ruin in the middle of a marsh. Gagging from the fumes rising out of the muck, she gamely enters the ruins and finds a small demon. Horrified, she reaches for her sword to strike it dead, but her hand is stayed as the monster prostrates itself at her feet and begs her to let it serve. Intrigued, she asks it for a name. "Oh No". "Come now -- if you are begging to serve, you may start by telling me your name." "Oh No" "Look, you, you -- whatever you call yourself," she replied with anger, "either straighten up and tell me the truth or I'll send you back to the hell that spawned you." "No, really, my name is Oh No, and I still want to serve you." "OK, then," she replies. Far to the south, Percy Blakeney approaches the SW Command Ruins. Peering from the cover of the surrounding woods, he can see no signs of life. Cautiously, he creeps forward, each step making him slightly more confident as he gets closer and closer and still has no opposition. Just when he thinks he has it made, a huge man steps from behind a pillar. Clad in plate mail, standing 6' 6" tall, muscles like burnished steel, the visage causes Percy to freeze. Certainly, this must be one of the fabled Old Guard! Percy circles cautiously to his right. The giant figure doesn't move. Perhaps he is all appearance, after all, Percy thinks to himself. Suddenly, in a blur of activity, the giant almost dances across the intervening space and delivers a ringing blow to Percy's mailed head. This is followed in rapid succession by hammer-like hits to chest and knees. Before he knows it, Percy is nearly unconscious. In a last desparate move, as he stumbles to his knees, Percy flings his sword upward. Miracle of miracles, a move born of desparation succeeds in burying a sword through the one exposed patch of flesh in the Guard's left armpit. The Guard has just a moment to register his shock, and then he dies, a bewildered look on his face. Percy sighs and draws a lightly-scented kerchief across his face. But entering the ruin, he knows his nearly fatal encounter is all worthwhile, for there, glinting faintly in the afternoon sun that filters through the broken wall, is the fabled Command Item D! Reverently, Percy picks it up stows it in his backpack, then leaves the ruins behind. *************************************** Jareth considers the current situation. Starting the day with 10 cities, he now holds 11. His treasury has shrunk a little, from 3999 GP to 3874. While his expenses have stayed the same at 89, his income has risen from 364 GP to 388. Baroness Orczy has gained 3 XP to 7 and Percy has also gained 3 to 9. Jareth sits down to dispatch diplomatic missives to the far corners of the earth, for he hopes to stave off as long as possible the inevitable conflict that must soon occur amongst the great powers. In a crabbed hand, he quickly pens a message to Rorqual: Having the ghosts of Temujin on my eastern border, I felt compelled to capture 08, but I am not adverse to status discussions, particularly if we can reach a peaceful accomodation in the region of the West Temple. Indeed, it seems to me that if your great kingdom and my domain of free cities were to combine our forces, we would pose a serious threat to the red and yellow hordes to the east. What say you to such a proposal? I must point out that if you decline, I may be forced to consider an accomodation with one of those same eastern powers. Think on it, but don't hesitate too long to answer. Another message goes off to Temujin: Please tell me that the reports I hear of the death of my herald being the result of your agents' activities are not true. Certainly you must see that your aggressive moves toward both the southern and eastern temples, coupled with your blatant occupation of Retreat, cannot help but put us in conflict. Perhaps we can reach an agreement to mutually enjoy the benefits of a visit to the southern temple, whereby I might be persuaded to overlook your more blatant aggressiveness. Finally, a message to Gor: My friend Gor, I am not slighted in the least by your reasoning that we probably have little to discuss at present. Nonetheless, don't overlook the possibility that an alliance between nations at the far corners of the world can be mutually beneficial and much easier to feel comfortable about, as there is little chance that we will come into conflict anytime sooner than the latter days of the world. We both have aggressive opponents nipping at our borders and might do well to take them on 1 on 1 rather trying to cope with simultaenous attacks by both. Oh, and the "bar" in my name stands for "son of". My father Belford bar Heron (may his soul walk the paths of light) was a monk like myself. Only once did he succumb to the pleasures of the flesh, and I am the issue of that encounter. I have heard great things of this George RR Martin, who wrote the haunting "Song for Lya", but have no knowledge of the work of which you speak. I believe that I may own it, but have had little time for reading during these turbulent times. Certainly, such reading did not influence me when I chose to add "bar" to my name. I realise I can't keep 14. Not being sure how I stood with you I felt I had no choice when you left that city open. What I think would be good is free access to all temples, deployment of our heroes and major allies to other fronts, no fighting, and essentially divide the map in half. We also have to agree what to do with the center cities since we'll be the first two there. I welcome your thoughts. If, however, you choose to renew our ancient quarrel, I understand and wish you good fortune. We seem so evenly balanced right now though that I think our prospects are both better on other more open fronts. __________ Temujiin, I considered offering a peace to you, but figured at best you'd laugh at me. What a pity, I had decided to accept your offer after Temujin's turn, but you forced me to revise my plans. Happy Gor, finally he will not suffer battle on both fronts ! Gor, You've alredy read the above paragraph. Let's sign a full peace treaty ! As you stated in your last message, you realise I'll recapture 14, and you should evacuate your Ghost or it will perish. Don't be afraid of my Hero, he's going to the ruin. As for City 05, I'd sure like to have it... but I won't fight you for it ! I agree with all your terms : free access to temples, and deployment of Heroes and major allies to the other front ; it's allright also to divide the map in half. The only critical points are the two cities right in the middle of the map (65 and 66) ; an imaginary line cutting the map in half would cross both cities. Either each of us will get the "right" to have one and only one, or the first who will capture them will have them. I'd prefer the first option. What's your opinion ? Temujin, I'm sorry, but I won't distract Gor's attention from you. You may thank your new found ally... Alas your dwarf had to die to make it so, but as you forked 05 and 14 with your hero, the only way for me to gurantee you wouldn't take both and laugh at me was to get rid of it. As it is I've given back 14 to you in good faith instead of razing it and will keep 05. I'll split the center cities with you , but I want 65. I'll leave it up to you how to fight through Blue. How do you feel about advice? Some players hate it and would rather their know-it-all ally keep their mouths shut. I feel it can't hurt as long as it doesn't give away any secrets. However, one problem remains betwen us: The Northern Gold ruin. I'd like you not to search it, and send your hero to fight Blue instead. If you do search it, you jeapordize our peace. My reasoning: I have no plans to search it either and will deploy my 3rd hero against Red. By searching it you will waste 2 turns moving there and back. That means I have to keep my hero also up there to balance yours instead of moving him south as he could easily take all my home cities if I have no hero there to counter him. I don't plan to have my hero sit around for two turns doing nothing. Now for some advice, please don't hate me for it: You don't need any gold as you'll have a little less than 5000 next turn after getting your hero and retaking 14. It's much better for both of us if you engage Blue with your strongest +4 hero as quickly as possible. And I move equally swiftly against Red.My two cents for what they're worth. Jareth bar Belford, Let me urge you to think about modifying you relationship with Red. With only one anti-hero unit, Red can only defend/attack effectively on one front. I'm not asking for an all out attack just a hero stack of 8. You'll gain several cities and I'll get some welcome pressure on Red. You will also get several cities at very little risk as Red can't afford to send his strongest heroes and allies after you. Possible scenarios: (1) stalemate between Red and I, you get Red's border cities (2) I defeat the Red hero decisively. You share the cities (3) Red defeats me decisively and moves forward against me. At that point you can sweep through his home cities with your hero as it will require his Devil to be facing me to defeat me. It's a win-win for you and me. Also is there an accomadation we can make on the center cities? I have no interest in the western side of the map. That is yours and Rorquals who wouldn't like me getting involved no doubt. ________________ Ghost kills White Dwarf on bridge near 14. Certainly, the yellow empire will get no use out of that city. Hectic troop movements are made in preparation of the next battle with yellow. There are rumors that soon another hero will appear who can take the leadership in the east. Diplomacy ========= To Blue ------- I hope that you aren't going to listen to Gor. We both benefit if we can remove units from our common border. A small request: please do not block the access road to the temple. I had to spend several extra movement points to go through the swamp. I hope that you appreciate that I left your dwarf alive rather than acting like Gor and killing any inconvenient unit. Please don't be alarmed about the stack south of the temple. I'm sure that you'll understand that at this point I cannot take any chance of losing a hero or devil. A suggestion for you deployment: you can raze 61 and threaten 65 and at the same time take 63. Obviously, it's completely up to you but that seems to put you in a dominant position. To White -------- Do you already regret your choice of ally? I wouldn't trust an ally who kills my units because that's more convenient and who makes demands regarding my troop movement. He tries to shut out the racket of workmen busily ripping down the walls of his humble castle. Truth to tell, he is somewhat embarrassed by the people’s insistence on building a more glorious home for him, but he can’t bring himself to tell them to stop. A little concentrated work and he is finally ready to once again send off two heralds to spread the good news. Turn 5 The demon Oh No has been travelling north to the West Temple, eager to pray for guidance about how he can best serve Jareth. Along the way, he runs into one of the huge spiders, and a wolfrider, and convinces them to join him. All three quietly enter the stately marble halls. Bowing low, they pay their respects and receive blessings in return. Oh No emerges from the temple in anything but a contemplative mood. Jumping on the back of the huge spider, he yells “Let’s head east and capture more cities for the Master!” He is infuriated when he encounters an elemental and a heavy cavalry unit in the pay of Rorqual blocking his path. He insists that they step aside. They refuse. He kicks the elemental in its huge nose. Bleeding profusely, the monster rolls over the spider, squashing it flat. Now truly incensed at the loss of his friend, Oh No springs into a flurry of activity, picking up the giant horse and stuffing it down the elemental’s throat, killing them both. There, a wizened old man greets them. “What may we do for you, my children?” “We have come in service of Master Jareth”, replies the Baroness. “Ah, a worthy cause. So worthy, in fact, that I will reward you with a noble ally, if you can but bring back 975 GP to help our efforts with the poor. What say you?” Eagerly, Baroness Orczy nods her head yes. “Go then, with my blessing,” says the old man. “Return when you have amassed the necessary funds.” Further south, Percy, still smarting from his tussle with the Old Guard, walks slowly into the huge cavern that is Lower SW Flight. Fortunately, he has no need to fight, as he picks up the Flight Item H and heads north again. Finally, in one other piece of news, a dwarf has managed to pick his way through a huge swamp that surrounds the South Temple, and receives a blessing for his efforts. Jareth receives word that Rorqual has refused to accept his apologies for the overzealous actions of Oh No, the demon. He insists on holding Jareth personally responsible, as if he could somehow exert an influence on the actions of a distant underling! Fortunately, Temujin, beset by ravening hordes to his north, has seen the wisdom of cooling off his western border, and accepts a temporary truce. He demonstrates his good faith by going out of his way to avoid the dwarf that has stupidly blocked the road north of South Temple. Jareth angrily pens an order to his field commanders, insisting that this type of sloppy deployment stop at once. He sends his personal assurances to Temujin that he should not have to endure any further indignities of this sort. Oh No is ecstatic when he receives the green light from his commander-in- chief. He races over the tumbled landscape to 61, stopping only long enough to call out the perfunctory warning required by the Geneva Convention. Receiving no response after ten seconds, he literally rips the walls of the city apart with a grunt. He kicks apart the spider nest he finds inside, and finds 350 GP hidden under the straw. Now on a rampage, blood lust running high, he takes the city apart block by block, leaving nothing but a smoking ruin behind him. Turn 7 In a small bar in Woodland, Sir Andrew Ffoulkes reads again the missive he has but recently received from his childhood friend Percy Blakeney. Percy paints a glorious picture of the future as it might look in a world united under the benevolent leadership of the mysterious monk, Jareth bar Belford. Certainly, such a world offers a brighter promise than that offered by the crude boors he has recently encountered in 11 and 51. The swaggering and drunken troops there had promised to cleanse the world of "any scum who don't bow down to Rorqual". He slams his huge fist down on the table and shouts "No, by God!", startling the poor waitress who was passing by at that moment. A sardonic grin creases his face as he bows low to her and presses a heavy sack into her hands. "Here, my dear. Take this as a small recompense for the fright I have caused." Without a backwards glance, he marches out into the twilight, smiling as he hears the young woman's startled gasp: "'cor, there must be a thousand gold pieces in here." {"1010, to be precise, my pretty lass -- enjoy it", he thinks as he walks off into the sunset and his destiny}. Jareth has ordered his followers to seek spiritual guidance whenever possible, and he is pleased when he receives word that an elephant, 3 huge spiders, a pikeman and a wolfrider have all received blessings at the West Temple, while an archer, heavy cavalry, dwarf and a spider have sought similar boons at the South Temple. There is little else to report, as no new battles or searches have occured to enhance the skills of his three followers. He turns his attention to reports of the more recent activity. Turn 8 This day dawned with the sun shining down on eleven cities whose inhabitants had embraced the peaceful philosophy of Jarethism, as some had taken to calling it (over his objections, Jareth thought). 3439 GP resided in the central bank, with city income of 428 still exceeding the troop support costs of 330 GP. To the south, Percy Blakeney is flying low when he spots a familiar-looking circle of stones on the ground. Swooping in low for a look, he spots movement among the rocks. A flash of reddish skin draws his attention to a roofless building. Sword drawn, he peers into the building. Cowering in the corner is a devil. Motioning to the creature, he merely points at the edge on his blade and gestures toward the door. Shaking its head miserably, the devil moves to join Percy's group. Meanwhile, to the north, Baroness Orczy and her friend Exxon the Archon have backtracked to a remote spot where one can barely see the ruins of an ancient culture as it is gradually reclaimed by swamps. There have been rumors circulating for some some time that a huge worm is prowling about the area. Indeed, she hasn't been exploring for more than 10 minutes when the hiss of a huge animal fills the air. Craning her neck back, she can just make out the top of its "head". Exxon pulls her up to the level of its gaping mouth and she begins a spirited negotiation with the beast, which culminates with its agreement to fight on the side of right and honor. Noting the continuing presence of large numbers of Rorqual's hired thugs, Jareth ramps up production in Woodland and Seaview to include light infantry and bats at each site. In the center of the map, another archer and a dwarf receive the blessings of south temple before setting out on their long trek north. But aside from those few activities, the day has been unremarkable. Jareth senses the calm before a storm, but nonetheless takes advantage of the quiet to catch up on some sleep. Having started the day with 11 cities and 3439 GP, with income of 428 vs. expenses of 330 GP, he now has 11 cities, 2799 GP, 428 income and 326 expenses. Percy has now garnered enough experience (15) to be considered for promotion next turn. Baroness Orczy has picked up a little experience to 13 and Sir Andrew Ffoulkes remains a cypher as before. Bowing low, he stammers nervously. "Sir, our watchmen have seen them!! Hundreds, maybe thousands...." "What?," asks Jareth. "Ships, sir, ships! There must be a zillion of them." "Calm down, lad. Let's go look for ourselves, shall we? Stepping up onto the platform at the edge of the tower, Jareth gives a low whistle. The young messenger hadn't been exaggerating. If anything, there were seemingly more white-colored ships bearing down on his land than than there had been in all the navies of all the nations since the dawn of creation. Allowing himself only a moment to panic, Jareth quickly recovers. Scanning the horizon, he notes the clever postioning of the fleets. An unsought whistle of admiration escapes his lips. This Rorqual will not be an easy opponent! Nonetheless, he vows his men will not die without at least putting up a stiff resistance. Orders are dispatched. His troops are redeployed. Orders taken care of, Jareth moves to a review of other events. The day had dawned on a booming empire of 11 cities, with 2901 GP in the treasury, 428 GP income and 366 expenses. He barely needs to give a second thought to the recommendation from his senior military advisors that Percy Blakeney be advanced to the rank of cavalier, having amassed the necessary 15 XP. Baroness Orczy and Sir Ffoulkes remain at first level, with 12 and 0 XP respectively. Contemplating the next few days, Jareth opts for conservatism, ordering no new production, no attacks and leaving city and money stats unchanged at the end of the day. "You did it, sir! The white hordes have fled in the face of our awesome resistance." Jareth sighs. This one shows promise, but clearly has much to learn. Well, no time like the present. "Egbert, I want you to review these situation maps with me. It is critically important to look beyond the immediate situation and think days into the future. Tell me what you see." Egbert, aware that something he said must be wrong, studies the map carefully. "Well....it's like I said, sir. All of Rorqual's troops are retreating." "And to where are they 'retreating'?" "Well, they're all clustered around the West Temple." "Exactly! And what does that suggest to you? Stumped? Well, my guess is that Rorqual has stirred them all into a religious frenzy. They're probably chanting prayers, being blessed by the priests, and psyching themselves up into a killing fever. Do you know how difficult it is to stop a horde of religious fanatics? Especially if they think that dying for their "God" ensures them a place in the hereafter? I think we have a very big problem here, Egbert. I want you to review this from that angle and give me options. You have three hours." Jareth turns and walks out of the command tent without a backwards glance, leaving the nervous Egbert scanning and rescanning the maps. Jareth smiles -- a good lesson for the lad. Of course, he has already decided on his course of action, and moves to see that his orders are put into play. With 11 cities, 2963 GP in the treasury, 428 income and 408 expenses, today will be mostly focused on positioning, and gearing up for the expected white religious onslaught. Catapult production is ordered in Nasty Fork. Jareth glances at the terse telegram he received earlier that day from Sir Andrew Ffoulkes: "Searched ruins STOP Found state worker loafing on job STOP Sneaked past him and retrieved Flight Item G STOP Returning home STOP". Well, Jareth thinks, that ought to be worth about 3 XP to the ardent young Ffoulkes. With that thought in mind, Jareth decides it is time to call it a night and get ready for the morrow.
