All he remembered is a strange dream where a voice told him: "If you build it, they will come..." He stumbled around and found a himself in an old barn labeled "01" where there was a little man just standing there. He asked the little man: "Where am I and how did I get here?" The little man said: "Hee, Hee, I won't tell you, I won't tell you... But if you hire me for 25 gold pieces a day, I may just sit around and keep you company!" Although Piglet saved up a large sum of money from truffle hunting, he felt that 25 gp a day is just too expensive to pay someone who just sit around so he told the little man to go away. The little man then disappeared but before he left, he told piglet: "Ha, I will haunt you and your friends until you decide to give me the gold!" Piglet then went and explore his surroundings. By an old tree, he stopped and sniffed and found a large truffle. He dug up the truffle and it turned into a large white mist - and the mist can talk! "I am an Elemental form another plane - I am here to help you - and I am FAST!" Piglet then told him: "I need to build a farm, please find me some land where I can put up a nest so I don't have to walk the long and winding mountain roads" Thus the Elemental went off and build a nest in a plot of land labeled "03" Boy are nests are expensive! Piglet then continue his search and found Casper near a graveyard. "Hi Casper, I heard you are a friendly ghost!" said Piglet. Casper replied "Yep, I am also here to help you, and I can fly!" "Would you like to help me build my farm?" asked Piglet, Casper nodded and headed south... By then, it's dark and Piglet must rest. He said to himself "Good thing I invested in building a bat nest in the Barn. Tomorrow, they will come and carry me out of this valley so I don't have to walk..." (pigs do not like to take long walks since their cleaved toes are easily injured) The he nodded off to sleep. In his dream, he saw Mother Sow! Mother Sow said to him "You are on your own again, Piglet, but remember the following: - We are peaceful animals so try not to go pick a fight. - Don't take someone else's land unless they pick on you. - And if they pick on you, let them know farm animals are no cowards! And if you behave yourself, you can play with your friend Wild Boar tomorrow!" It was a good dream indeed! ----- Starting Ending City 1 2 Gold 13039 11354 Income 64 112 Expense 25 0 Piglet Exp 0 6 ----- [Well, here it is. Let the game begin! News of the death of our leader spread through the people like fire through a dry field in the heat of July except that it was raining and it was February. But the metaphor still stands. Upon hearing of his father's death, Duncan MacLeod returned to Glenfinan near the shores of Luscion to learn more. Rumours abounded as to whether the great warlord's death was from natural causes or whether it had more sinister origins. His demise could hardly have come at a worse time with enemy troops already on the march. While the story which was told publically was that of a heart attack, the truth, known only to a few, is that one's heart often has difficulty beating with an axe in it. Duncan MacLeod of the Clan MacLeod reclaimed his father's sword and swore an oath that day. "The death of my father shall be avenged. Whichever of our enemies is proven responsible for this dastardly deed will pay a heavy price. No mercy will be shown." This caused a great stir among the local populace, for it was well known that Duncan MacLeod was a man of his word. His allies know readily that once given, the word of MacLeod will be kept. Once crossed, however, his retribution will be equally as certain. MacLeod locates the SE elemental and ghost. Fire elemental welcomed in Glasgow 33. Bat built in Glenfinan 03. A fourth party, The Bacchants, has arrived at the scene. They do not constitute much of a military threat but a serious moral one. With their bawdy language and offending behaviour, they are tearing civilisation down, brick by brick, in the areas they control. Recommendation: The Bacchants constitute a major threat. I recommend we try to poison their leader, by injecting water in his whisky. Sirs, the situation in sector B04 is rapidly detoriating. After the insurrection on Animal Farm in northwest, the rebellion against syntax an grammar in northwest and the scottish separatists in the highlands of southeast, a *real* threat against culture, civilisation, science, progress and morale has appeared in the southeast: the Bacchants. The Bacchants started out as a cult, worshipping the Canadian athletes in the 1998 Olympic games who became famous because a medical officer found trace of oxygen in the marijuana mists in their lungs. For decades they have been living in the mountains, searching for the perfect fountain for water to make whisky of, and refining the art of writing bawdy limericks - the only poetry allowed in the Hedonistic Church of Bacchus, as they officialy are named. We now know that the sect prepared their re-entry in the mundane world by setting up liquor shops, ice-cream parlors and cable TV channels as fronts for their campaign against civilisation and rationality. Their headquarters seems to have been the whisky factories in the southern highlands. It seem to be their M O to re-baptize the conquered cities after the leading malt whisky brand of the area. The Bacchants are not analysed politically and they may end up end up anyone, all or no-one at all. They behave like the pigs in NW; they share the contempt for grammar with the cultural revolutionaries in NE, and the love for scottish dronking products with the bag-pipers in SE. This can turn out to be our worst nightmare yet! (As for the present status of the Bacchants, see insert in the beginning of this mail) The present leader of the sect is a certain Filthy McNasty, a failed circus artist from Philadelphia, USA. Little is yet known about him, but all communication channels to and from the Bacchant headquarters are under surveillance and we will send prints of all relevant findings. It is evident that the Bacchants are secterists kept together by a charismatic leader and the loss of their so called 'hero' would hurt the group more than any other action. I propose we do it the easiest way - by pouring water in his whisky! I will await instrucions. Wild Boar agreed and was ask to close his big brown eyes but before he did that, he noticed the woman had wings! When he open them up again, he found himself in a Tree House. He thank the strange woman and she said "I am an angel and I am here to help you and Piglet to build a farm so animals can live in peace." Wild Board thanked her and offer to donate 1044 GP to a church in her honor. Wild Boar then went on to search for land which is appropiate for building. He found a old farm house, vacated the pesty short men and offerred the house up for rent. A young couple came and rent the house and they were both very tall. Wild Boar deceided to rent the house to them. Meanwhile, Casper was busy finding land for Piglet also. He found a old brick building and a large cave where he cleaned up and include them in the farm. The Mist, moving very fast, found a dog house also. Piglet, riding on the back of Giant Bat, got out of the valley he was in. Since he know he no longer need the help of more bats, he asked an old farmer to look after the Barn for him. He then went truffle hunting in the south. He went to sleep happy to know that Wild Boar is here to help him and both Casper and the Mist both made good progress in expanding the Farm. ----- Starting Ending City 2 6 Gold 10422 9012 Income 112 256 Expense 10 10 Piglet Exp 6 6 Wild Boar Exp 0 2 Wild Boar appeared with Archon in Tree House fo 1044 GP and took Farm House (17) Ghost took Brick Yard (12) and Dark Cave (15) Elemental took Dog House (14) Hv. If you should decide to violate the treaty, our troops should be positioned so that I at least have some warning...so... I accept your terms with some very minor additions. =46irst, we should stipulate that you will have access to the ruins West of the Southern temple, and I to the East within our own domains. (This probably does not need to be spelled out.) Second, the armies which are produced or deployed in 41 and 34 will not be those of greater than 1 turn production, nor allies. I shall redeploy my allies after the city, 7, has been taken and production of defensive armies begun. (Unless of course either of us face a major outside threat in which case at least one of us in very bad shape -- not likely before turn 12). By refraining from deploying the more powerful (and long range) armies in these cities, we will reduce the likelihood (as well as the temptation) for any backstabbing, thus ensuring a successful agreement. I agree to your terms regarding temple usage, but I recommend that any large stacks which you have visit that location whether by land or boat, use the Western bridge, not the Southern bridge for access. I shall use the Eastern bridge. Individual armies may travel the Southern route...but we must minimize the opportunity and thus the likelihood for sneak attack. I also presume that your blessed armies will head North or West, and mine North or East, and that we may discuss the status of the center cities at an appropriate time. (It's far too early for that). As per your terms, the agreement shall last through turn 12 at which time we may opt to extend it, or not, depending upon the circumstances. It is my fervent wish that we both find the nonaggression pack fruitful. Perhaps, down the road, it will be codified into a full alliance. However, be forewarned. If you should attack me in violation of the treaty, I shall be most unforgiving. The old wise horse said to him: "Piglet, I hope all is going well for you. I am here to give you some advice and hopefully you will use these advise wisely." "Remember, farm animals wake up early in the morning, before anyone else so they will get a head start in a day's work. However, we also go to bed before anyone else so it is important to put everying in please before you go to bed. Since it seem like that non-agressive agreement has are being established across the land that you are currently in (which is a good thing if all can live in peace,) you may want to let others know your intentions before any mis-understanding arises..." Piglet, being a light sleeper, woke up and thought about the dream... He hunted for truffles for a little while but was not able to find any since pigs are not good truffle hunters when they are sleepy. However, he did manage to write a message on the back of a piece of bark and let it float along the river so others knows what he thinks. One the piece of bark, it said: "Great Lords, greeting from the Farm! As you all know, farm animals are very peaceful animals. We do not want any conflict between your great empires and the Farm and we offer the following to all empires that occupy this land: 1) We work hard for our land and we do not want misunderstandings to bring war to our land. Thus, we will only kick the short little men out of "Grey Cities". We are not interested in cities or locations that fly the banners of other colors. This will include any area [ruins included] that are occupied by anyone else. 2) Since farm animals are fairly shy, we would wish to propose the official point of "demarcation" (Piglet had to look this word up in the dictionary, he is not very good at English but quite good at math, thus his ability to direct other animals to expand the farm rapidly), as the Lord MacLeod put it, as the 1/2 way point between the nearest buildings of the empires. We humbly suggest avoid traveling in the area between our buildings in large groups (if at all) and we, likewise will not travel (at all) in these areas. 3) We humbly propose a non-aggressive agreement with each of your great empires until the end of the 10th cycle. After the 10th cycle, the Farm will extend the offer until the end of the 20th cycle if a good relationship is formed and we do not step on each other's toes. (Piglet wonders what will hurt more, his cleaved toes or the sole of another's foot ;-) [Hey, I may be able to go through this game without fighting ... ;-) Mike ] 4) Farm animals would also like to be able to make offerings to the Gods and we most likely will be using the Western and/or Northern temple. We welcom the use of these temples by others but we humbly ask your group visiting the temple not to exceed 4 per day and do not stay overnight. (Since some farm animals are frightened by large numbers of strangers lingering near the farm) In return, we will not occupy the temples overnight ourselves and we would like the ability to visit your temples (in a group less than 4 per day) and receive blessings from your gods. We are able to make this offer because we will be very content if we keep all the neutral locations we occupy in the Farm until the end of our days here. We are peaceful animals and we strive to avoid conflicts. We humbly await your replies and we welcome any comments you may have. Yours truly, Piglet Piglet then rolled over and went to sleep. While he was a suckling, he spent many hours studing math while others are rolling around in the mud. Through hard work, he has a keen sense of optimizing his resouces. He truly believes in what he says and he feels if he can only claim land that farm animals have occupied. Thus, he will reconize and honor any cliamed land by other empires but for unclaimed land, he welcomes the challange (in a non-hostile way) of who can lay claim to the land by getting there first. Some may say he has the advantage of waking up earlier in the day but since this world is very fair, the inability to get to uncliam land maybe due to more emphasis is placed on getting to other locations (a blessing from the Gods or a gift from visiting ruins perhaps?) or the lack of planning. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Michael P. Leung) to all players; Piglet woke up the next morning and found himself hungry again since he did not find any truffles last night. With the aid of his Giant Bat friend, he found a golden truffle in the middle of the forest. Piglet knows that golden truffles are VERY rare, it gives extra strength to him and others in his group! He took the golden truffle and he was pleased. Meanwhile, Wild Boar was hunting for Yam in the middle of a swamp along with the Angel and suddenly, he felt the ground below him moving! He step back and 2 red creature appeared. One of the creature said: "Ha, look what we have here, a pig? Breakfast!" However, the other creature said "No so fast! Remember what we were told? We are here to help build the Farm." He turn to Wild Boar and ask: "Do you know where we can find Piglet? We are here to help him build his farm." Wild Boar was confused. One of these creature wants to eat him and the other wants to help him so he turn to the friendly creature and said "Piglet is roaming around looking for appropiate land to build the farm on. I am his friend Wild Boar, may I who are you?" The second red creature said: "I am Sir Land's-a-lot and he is Sir Filthy-Galahad. I slep with my king's wife and he tried to become a butchers but got stampeded by the pigs he was trying to slaughter. For our sin we were sent to hell - notice the "costume"? We were told in order to repent for our sin, we must come to this world and help Piglet to build the farm..." "Ahhh..." said Wild Boar, "well, we need all the help we can but I really don't think I fell comfortable with Filthy running around wanting to eat me. You can stay but he must go." Out of the Blue, the ground opened and Filthy was consumed in fire, sucked into the ground, and disappeared. "Wow!" said Land's-a-lot, "the big guy was serious when he told us to help build the farm! I think there is a old dock in the south and I will help you secure it..." Meanwhile, both Casper and the Mist was busy too! Casper found a large nest and the Mist found an old mine... Lastly, a farmer with a pike found a barn near the edge of the water and started breeding ponies there... Piglet, at the end of the day, felt comfortable at the rate he is building the Farm. His Eastern neighbor, Me and Mrs. Me (aka small player) seems friendly, and he remember how nice kids were to him in the petting zoo while he was a suckling. The leader of the Clan MacLeod seems to know what he is doing and have a similar strategy as Piglet. He must have studied very hard when he was young also! From what he has gathered, the MacLeod is an honorable Clan and he hope to meet Duncan MacLeod someday - in peace. However, some disturbing news were heard from the South. It seems that a clan known as the Bacchants? or is it the Offenders? have sent BUCHERS up north as spies! If there is one thing farm animals dislike, it's buchers, and we don't have to tell you why... Before he went to sleep in the safety of the Brick Yard, he sent out the following messages: To yellow: "Dear Me and Mrs. Me, Greetings from the Farm! Hope you are enjoying breeding those flying horses. They are fine animals and I am sure you will have lots of fun with them. I am trying to breed some myself too. I have noticed that you do not seem to be interested in the nutral cities to you west. The expansion of the farm is going well but we hate to see good land go to waste. Thus, if you have no interest in these cities, we would like to build a petting zoo and a draw bridge. In return, all animals bred there will be transported away immediatly, and we will return the keys to you no later than the 18th day of the month. Furthermore, there will be no guards at the door anytime so you need not feel threatened. Please let us know what you think. If you would like to put up your own buildings there, don't worry, we will not be offended in any way. Furthermore, I was wondering if you received our last message. If so, please let us know if you would like to be friends and not fight each other... Yours truly, Piglet." To Red, Piglet felt he has to be a little more formal: "Lord Duncan, Your communication was received and appreciated. As you can see, Farm animals do not live beyond their means. Of the all the clans in this land, I am sure you can most appreciate the strategy I used to expand the farm up to this point since I see almost a mirror image of our map in your kingdom. Maybe someday, we will meet and we can compare notes on our strategies... We are aware that you have made a non-aggresive agreement with the Bacchants in the South. Knowing the history of the MacLeod clan, I am sure you will adhere to your words so I will not try to influence your truce with the Bacchants. I am confident that in the next 18 days, you will find I too, am true to my words and honorable. Lastly, we would like to know if you have any feedback on our last communication. Sincerely, Piglet" Piglet then send the following message to Blue: "A BUCHER! What is a bucher doing in a farm? We are peaceful animals and we do not like people that kill pigs and make porkchops! Mother Sow warned me about people like you. I am glad that I told Micawber to go away when he demended 25GP a day for his services. Do he take me as a fool? Asking me to pay him to kill pigs? The nerve! Farm animals are peaceful but we are no cowards, and we don't have to very politicaly savvy to understand what it means to be call a "Ham-to-be" and have someone sending spies into our farm, especially spies that are buchers." ----- Starting Ending City 6 10 Gold 9258 5758 Income 156 364 Expense 10 37 Piglet Exp 6 9 Wild Boar Exp 2 5 Piglet searched ruin and found +2 command item Wild Boar searched ruin and found 2xDevils, disbanded 1 Elemental took Old Mine (05) Pikeman took Horse Barn (16) Devil took Old Dock (52) Ghost took Large Nest (11) All battles were obvious so no WarBOT reports was necessary Orcish Mob built in Old Mine Lt. I look forward to a relatively quiet border. Message to White: As you indicated, I have inked a non aggression pact with Blue. And I am committed to it as written. However, by virtue of our geographic position and the time limit placed on this game, the likelihood of large scale hostilities breaking out between us seems slim. (Of course the ranges on some of our armies are pretty large, so I could be mistaken about this). Anyway, if your forces are not placed in such a position as to threaten me, the likelihood of conflict between us will drop even further. That much being said, I pretty much subcribe to a "Do unto your neighbor...as your neighbor does to you," policy. My main objective at the moment appears to be matching wits with Mr and Mrs Me. As I am already discovering, unconventional tactics may force me to respond in unconventional ways. Anyway... if your forces do not threaten my vital interests (read cities), I will be less inclined to threaten yours. Bear that in mind should you decide to send any armies or navies my way. I imagine that both you and I will have our hands full enough of fighting soon enough without having to add an additional adversary to the list. The simplest way to avoid any unintended hostilities is to make sure our armies are never too close together such that a misunderstanding might spark a battle or worse, a large conflict between us. The fog of war has been known to cause many a skirmish in history. If you deploy large scale forces within range of my cities, my soldiers may assume they are hostile and act accordingly. Caution is recommended. Well, at least there are no women named "Helen" in this game! :-) Note: It appears that yellow has answered your request regarding his Western cities by actions, not words. Another note: You have chosen a bold strategy in your Large Nest. It may pay off, if you do not lose control of that place, but it is risky to place your most expensive production facility on the front lines. As long as they are not hostile toward the farm, we are comitted to be good neighbors. As to Lord Duncan's communication, we understand his concern and we also do not see us meeting any time soon save for a possible very small border. Farm animals likes to feel save in the farm so the border buildings may house more animals, but we will make sure that for the possible border we share with the MacLeod clan, the buildings will house slower animals that will post no threat toward them. Taking only parts of Piglet's communication and agreeing to it - but hey, you know me, I always enjoy rebutting you. ;-) The swamp in Florida and the diet powder is a nice touch though. At least it gives me an idea if Filthy or Larson is telling the truth... Good thing I covered myself by using "pick on" instead of "attack" in Piglet's first communication: - We are peaceful animals so try not to go pick a fight. - Don't take someone else's land unless they pick on you. - And if they pick on you, let them know farm animals are no cowards! I play a pretty open game. And if I have time, I will share my strategy on the tournment and this game in particular in a "startegic update" in my turn 5 message... Jim, any objections? In his fuzzy mind echoed the words of the beautiful young military advicer Mary Q Contrary; Q for Quite; Mary, Mary Quite Contrary. It was liutenant M Q Contrary that had adviced the Offenders to go slow. "-You don't have the strength to rise early in the morning. You dont have the drive to expand at every price. So - let your weaknesses be your strength! Go slow where the others go fast! Crawl when they run! Be contrary at every price!" When the horrible news about the fate of mr Micawber, the kind and generous butcher in the little farm up north, reached the Offenders camp it was lovely ms Contrary that had turned McNasty's mind from the animals beastly - yakk! - 'mifu' orgy and directed his thoughts against the future of the Bacchanti. "-Your anger will never bring mr Micawber, mrs Micawber and all the little Micawber juniors back to life. Your sword will not give you the lost secrets of his juicy bratwurts or hot chorizos. .." Mr McNasty had sat with tears in his eyes as ms Contrary ordered L E Whipsnade, DB (DisBarred), SOB, to write to the Farm to offer peace on the conditions Napoleon, the Piglet, had articulated. Ms Contrary had told him that the swines would not accept the offer at first, but that he had to keep on. It was his duty - Man's burden! She had foreseen that Piglet would try to appear wounded by his words about swines as ham to be. "-But that is out of the Bible", an astonished McNasty replied. "Just like 'all flesh is hay about humans, all pigflesh will be ham. And porkchops, yummy!, of course" "-Was it not Piglet that accused mr Me of being a six years old? Is that not an insult thrice as strong as a mere remembrance that all living beings must die" "-You are right", had wise ms Contrary replied. "But pigs don't think rules apply to them, only to others". And then she uttered the fatal words: "-In order to understand your neighbour, you must try to think like him and act like him. You must learn to *be* like him!" McNasty had taken ms Contrary's advice litterary. Indeed, her last words before she left the camp was: "-McNasty - you *swine*! This is unheard of! I will leave your camp now and not return until you have sobered up and taught some manners!" McNasty could not remember what it was he did, but who cared. He would certainly not see ms Contrary again until day 7 or so. Leung) to all players; [sorry, this is long!] It was a busy day on the farm! First and foremost, we would like to announce the demise of Larson, aka used lemon salesman, swamp salesman, and diet guru. Casper and a griffin found Larson wondering in the hills trying to sell "gold mines". Knowing there were outstanding warrents for his arrest for illegal deals and selling poisonous "diet powder", Casper and the griffin proceed to arrest him... In the heat of the fight, Larson disappeared in a puff of smoke, never to be found again, leaving behind his fligh item... Otherwise, the expansion of the farm is proceeding according to plans. Wild Boar completed his quest of destroying all the spiders in the center island. In return, the Gods asked Michael the Angel to help defend the farm. Michael then proceed to Long Island, the holy grail for all drunks, including Filthy, and kick the booze producing spider out so there will be no more justification for drunks to hang around that area anymore... The farm has now completed its initial expansion plans. Other than reclaiming the southwest annex inhabited by Filthy and the like, we will concentrate on defending our borders. Diplomacy: Yellow: We still have not receive any communication from Me and Mrs. Me. However, it seems that we have no conflict with each other and we should be able to continue to have a non-aggresive stance. Red: We have received your communication regarding your concern of the Farm may expand Southeast. First, we would like to clarify an item in your communication: You stated that the farm animals got to the center island first because we wake up earlier in the day than the other empires. This is simply not true! We got to the center island first because we did not choose to persue the NW flight item and gold immediatly. As we stated before, each empire value different things. Some feel the need to secure flight items, some feel the need to secure gold. But we have chosen to build the farm on the center island - it was a long and hard journey, and we passed up on other oppertunities along the way, and I hope that you can appreciate the fact that we did not get to the center island first just because we moved first. [RL: This map is very fair. Actually, Red has a slight advantage in this game since they have the army producing corner of the city towards the center of the map. (Well, any side in the SE corner has that advantage - and Ivan, since Darek is in the game and you should be reading this, you may want to keep that in mind for future map design - 1 movement point may not seem much but a good player can really use it to his advantage ;-) If anyone chooses to do so, there were many chances to get to the center of the island before White since White 1) went out of the way to pick up a devil and 2) get blessing at the temple. Actually, up to the end of turn 5, there was still a way to prevent White from taking city 66 and completing his quest: put a unit (a bat will do) on one of the road square between the two center cities. White will then have to go around or attack that unit which will prevent him from reaching the city.] Although we don't see how Valley Shack threaten your empire, we do not want to jeperdize our so far positive relationship. Thus, to show we have no hostile intension toward your empire, we have not built any production into that city. Wild Boar and his angel pal will leave the next day and will not head toward your direction. In accordance to the Farm's previous commitment to you, all units produced in or vectored to the center island are slow moving defensive units that do not post a threat to your empire. In return, we would kindly ask that you do not produce any units in or vector any units to city of 64 that have more than 16 movement points. Please let us know if you have any additional concerns. If you feel an empty city with no units built in it or units vectored to it threatens your empire, we can proceed to negotiate the razing of the city of Valley Shack... Blue: You have to stop taking the advise from Mary Q Contrary! >"Point out to mr Me that he is heading against a disaster if he engages in >battle with the Scots - but that he can gain quite a lot from a surprise >attack in Whites less defended eastern flank. We beg to differ. First, although farm animals are peaceful, we do not like to be picked on, and we *can* defend the farm. Please pay more attention to how the farm resources are allocated... (i.e. in the city of Old Mine, there are enough units there to prevent an hero/griffin combo from taking that city - although it took 3 turns to get the right combination of units in there, it was done just before the hero can reach the city.) >Point out to him that he >would be fighting an enemy (White) caught in a two front war already at >turn 5 Well, your front is not much of a threat, is it? Last I checked, after you pick a fight with us, you gave up on the western gold, razed your own spider producing city, and lost your hero. I wonder if anyone is dumb enough to take your "advises"... I guess Magnus did not see the griffin can ride the spider boat in the main body of water to reach his hero. ;-) Regardless, I think I had some pretty heavy pressure in that direction and had a good chance to getting that hero later. Magnus did, however, see that I can take the spider city and he razed it before I got to it - good job ;-) As to my strategy - I play a pretty open game and I usually discuss the various strategies I use and hopefully to learn something from your feedback - I have gotten some pretty interesting feedback after I wrote the ATI vs. Human strategies and learned quite a bit from that. So, if you have any questions or comments about my strategies, please let me know... At this point of the game, I think it should be OK to share my "opening" strategy without giving away too much. First, I see the tournment as a series of games. What you do in one game will affect how people preceive you in future games when the archives become available. Thus, for the tournment as a whole, I try to do the following: 1) I will stick to my words 2) I will not initiate an unprovoked attack 3) I will be fair 4) I will be firm 5) I will fight back when provoked Thus, I started the game stating the view points of the farm and what we try to do. By moving first, I have the disadvantage of not knowing what you guys are going to do - I think I am one of the very few people who think moving first is a disadvantage. ;-) I clearly stated that we do not want war and will not attack unless "picked on" on turn 2. I choose the word "pick on" instead of "attack" because Magnus is in the game. ;-) I kinda knew he would start something. ;-) I also included my point of view on expansion. I actually truly believe that neutral cities are neutral - no matter where they are located. But I did make accomadations in this game regarding their physical locations though. Whoever can physically get to a neutral city (or ruin) first should lay claim to that city - especially with tournment maps that are vary fair - and the torunment rules of playing againt your own color. Thus, it's seems to be a good guideline to use for this game. When I got the game package, I spent a few hours studying the map and try out different stragegy of expansion. In a tournment game, I usually have my first 6 turns or so "scripted" so I know how to react to various situation. Since I spent a lot of time on my turns (I usually plan 2-3 turns ahead based on available information,) I need to save my timeouts for later when I really need them. For the Head to Head game against Jim, our moderator, turns are taking *weeks* now - with maybe between 10-40 hours of actual play time... ;-) Is that about right for you, Jim? There are a few things that made this scenerio unique: 1) Lots of starting gold! I am usually very careful about managing gold, espeicially with the tournment army set becuase its expansive and fair - you get what you pay for ;-) At the beginning of the game, I usually have a building plan: what to build and when to build it. So I had an idea of the major types of units I wanted in this scenerio and I calculated the gold I need to keep these units for a 20 round game. Guess what, I had enought gold with just my starting gold and the income from the cities ;-) (I usually play the game with the cities I anticipate to own with full production turned on and "end turn" until turn 20 to see where I stand in gold - adjusting for gold needed to receive heroes and lost of some units, etc.) Thus, I have the option of not exploring the gold ruins which really take you out of the way. 2) 3 heroes. Since the third hero arrives on turn 7, I can use that hero to easily grab the gold if I control the cities the "guard" the gold. Thus, I build (and vectored) mobs to the 2 gold guarding cities. When turn 7 comes around, I can grab the gold if I need it. Another thing about 3 heroes is that each side only get 2 flight items. I figured that *EVERYONE* will go for the flight items first since they are *VERY* useful. However, in my expansion trials, I found that I can actually use my third hero to grab the flight item if necessary which will give me an advantage in the initial expansion process. 3) Razing anytime. I really didn't expect Bob and the gang to use this rule in a tournment round. This is great for defense but really bad for figuring a consistant city % since there are players that will never raze cities and there are plyers that will raze a city before his enemy can get to it. (As demonstrated by Magnus ;-) Thus, if I can get a good head start, I should be able to defend fairly well against attacks. - and raze the cities if I can't. ;-) 4) The center island is very hard to get to. And that make these cities quite easy to defend ;-) Thus, there is a pretty good advantage in being able to control the center - which I always like to do anyway ;-) I figured that a few Hv. Inf., a hero stack, and a roaming pegesus should be able to defend the center quite well. 5) City locations. I always try to get my units blessed as soon and as often as possible. That's why I almost always build some of my "heavy" units near the temple - and on the "front line". Since the outcome of the battles in the tournment is known, each blessing you get gives you that much more chance in winning a battle. After that, I did some research on each of you ;-) Since I played in a pretty involved game with Magnus, I kinda know his style of play (just as he knows mine so he knew what he was getting into when he started the butcher thing with Piglet ;-). Although not all of the game histories are out yet, I did find entires in the practice round games. Really don't know much about how Darek plays since he doesn't say much in any of his communication but looks like from the results he could hold his own. I enjoyed reading some of Richard's communications and I try to base my communication with him on what I saw... I did not play in the playtest round but the history of the head to head game is available and the ATI I wrote is also available so it's fair... In my experience of playing WL, I found that people tend to justify their action, whatever they may be - as I am doing here. Some justifications are valid, some are not. And we know other players will read these archives to determine if we "streach" our justifications or not... To this, I must say that Magnus is one of the most interesting player I've ever played against (I did quite a bit of research on him already during the Gate game ;-) - he needs no justification for any of his actions - but he does stick to his words - you just need to find out which version is the "truth". And for this, I really respect him as a player - and he is extreamly entertaining to play with to boot... For me, a less creative player, I can only resort to the more conventional means of precise calculation and strategy... So, that's the reason I played the way I played up to now. If you have any questions or comments, let me know... Just to be fair, I reserve the option to change any of the above strategies ;-) Remember, we are not playing against each other, we are playing against people with our own color so try to keep the game fun and interesting! I promise I will try my best to add some flair to piglet's communications and I will come up with some pretty interesting moves... ;-) mike] ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Michael P. Farm animals do not like to be pick on and although you may gain some farm land from this, let us remaind you that we are no longer friends... To Red: It seems like we now have a common enemy. You are correct in your view of an unusal style calls for an unusual measure and we congradulage you on your foresight. You may be debating which city in the center island to secure right now, let the us make this decision easier for you: Currently, the Fram controls 4 cities of the center island and we feel we can maintain control without much of a problem. We propose to split the center island half and half between the Farm and your clan. So here is our proposal: 1) We draft a non-aggresive agreement toward each other until the end of the 15th day. At which time, we can either extend our agreement until the end of the 20th day, or, ONLY ON YOUR CHOOSING, engage each other in a friendly competition on the 16th cycle. 2) We work togather and defend the center island. I will take care of the flying horse NW of 62 and you can take care of the one South of 62 and East of 62 (which you may plan to do anyway ;-). If other threatening units stray into range of the cities of the center island, we will work togather to eliminate it. Here is what we will do in return: 1) We will vacate Valley Shack on the 12th day and transfer the ownership to you. You will be able to gain the benefit of a high income producing city with minimum efforts. (You may even gain the production of a Hv. Inf. - the unit we plan to build in the city to defend it until the transfer takes place which should post no threat to your clan) Even if Yellow do not engage us, this proposal is binding and we will relinquish the control of the city to you should you agree to it. 2) We will not build the Farm the two currently un-occupied plot of land remaining on the island, specificly in 62. This should help you in deceiding on your expansion plans without worrying about the Farm's policy of taking un-occpied land in its enemy's quardrent. 3) You gain the trust and friendship of the farm which may be helpful when your non-aggresive agreement expires with the Offenders or should Filthy deceide to terminate it prematurly since we are putting quite a bit of pressure on him and he has no where else to expand. We believe this is a fair offer that will benifit both of us. Please note that this proposal is seperate and independent from the one you have drafted with the Offenders and we are in no way asking for you to terminate your agreement with them. Farm animals are honorable and we feel your clan share much of our traits and thus, we wish a peaceful co-existance. If you pursue it, you will win that city....at least temporarily. Holding it, however, is another story. Message to Blue: Your offer of alliance is an interesting one. However, given the precarious nature of your position, I suggest that you concentrate your own efforts on defending your realm rather than seeking to drag me into war. Indeed...you have your work cut out for you. However, you have one major advantage over White. The non-aggression pact which we have signed secures your entire Eastern border while white is facing an unexpected enemy attack. This may be a small advantage...but one which if used wisely can be helpful in your efforts. Do not betray me. If you do, I will be annoyed and will respond. Picture my hero returning South with a devil at his side...:- ) I am certain you do not want a two front war. The Temple is temporarily entrusted to your care as you suggested. I expect you will occupy it with your Spider this turn and withdraw next turn so that my forces may have access again in turn 8. (Although I fully anticipate White will dispatch the Yellow ghost post-haste in any event.) Message to White: Your offer, I truly find intriguing....and with only minor modifications -- let us call them letters of understanding, I shall accept. I'm not sure they are even changes to your proposal...but I've tried to make clearer how I interpreted your words. Generally....it is not to my advantage to have large White forces massing in the Northern island...whether in defense of your own territory or, seeking to go on the offensive into Yellow territory. Where large number of troops exist, the danger of battle resulting either from the fog of war or from irresistable temptation on someone's part grow too great. Therefore; >1) We draft a non-aggresive agreement toward each other until the end of >the 15th day. At which time, we can either extend our agreement until the >end of the 20th day, or, ONLY ON YOUR CHOOSING, engage each other in a >friendly competition on the 16th cycle. I assume this means you are guaranteeing peaceful relations between us for the entire game, unless I should decide otherwise in turn 15. (For whatever guarantees are worth in this game:-)) >2) We work togather and defend the center island. I will take care of the >flying horse NW of 62 and you can take care of the one South of 62 and East >of 62 (which you may plan to do anyway ;-). If other threatening units >stray into range of the cities of the center island, we will work together >to eliminate it. Now...as I see it, this is only advantageous to me to do this if you will agree to restrict the size of your armies deployed on the center isle. Both in strength and in range. For certain, your hero and Archon must leave the Valley Shack, as you promised to head West. There is no longer a need for them there. I will secure that frontier. Feel free to build one or two heavy infantries for defensive purposes, but then vector such production away from the center isle. The other 4 corner cities on the center isle should not produce armies of greater than 1 turns production. Other armies of greater range shall only be deployed there if needed for defensive (or offensive operations.)....I assume you may desire slightly more powerful forces in Long Island (which is where I really live!!) and I may need similar forces in city 62. Secondly...you will have to defend the island against Blue forces. I am bound by my word not to fight with him through turn 12. Yellow, on the other hand, is another matter entirely:-) I relish the opportunity. >2) We will not build the Farm the two currently un-occupied plot of land >remaining on the island, specificly in 62 I assume this means you are acknowlegding that I will control city 64, which I shall take shortly. City 66 which you will hand over as part of the accords. And City 62 which will also soon fall to my forces. I have eliminated both Pegusi this turn. I expect you will take care of the other one as agreed. >1) We will vacate Valley Shack on the 12th day and transfer the ownership >to you. Since it will take some time for my forces to arrive at the valley shack....if I take city 64 first and then approach on foot, I don't imagine being able to occupy it much earlier. However, I suggest that if my forces should arrive a turn or two earlier, that you might be amenable to an earlier transfer. After I occupy it, I to shall build the one or two heavy infantry and then vector all armies away. Just a cautionary note: I have now gone out on a limb for our relationship. If you betray this trust, I will show no mercy. Any opportunity for a truce will be irrevicably forgotten. I have a fairly substantial force in the vicinity of the Eastern temple which could be sent in your direction if need be. I do not think you wish to face them in battle. Make no mistake.....at the moment, our forces seem to be the only ones capable of seriously challenging each other. Now...it is also true that we fight not against each other but against unknowns in another world of the same color. There are worse outcomes than the splitting of the world two ways. [Would that be a good enough showing to get myself into the Round D games?] One more thing...despite our agreement, there is a difference between trust and naivity. I now possess undisputed control of the Eastern temple. Althought Blue will try to stop you, I imagine you will soon have undisputed control of the Western temple. It would be foolhardy for either of us to send a hero with large stack or otherwise to visit a temple so far within the domain of the other. To get there, one would have to bypass several weakly defended cities. And...if the stack is large, threaten all of them in the process. If the stack is weak, the temptation to kill a weakly defended hero exists. Either situation would result in a bad scene. Therefore, I propose that we acknowledge that within the respective domains of the other, we will not send large scale forces, unless assisting in battle. This is not much of a sacrifice to ensure an agreement lasts. Unit of Spiders built in Zurich 07. Leung) to all players; The news of Me's intrution into the Farm spread like wild fire! Razorback, a head strong boar, arrived at Old Dock to help defend the farm land. Since there was no way to defend the Dog House, farm animals scrambled to build towers and hold down key cities bracing for Me's onslaught. Razorback, realizing that Me had superior commanding power, seek guidance from the Gods... "Go, defend your land with our blessing" a loud voice was heard in the sky over the temple... It will be a tall order since most farm animals are committed to rid the butchers for the farm but we are hopeful that we can hold our own against Me. In securing the Farm's perimeter, 2 little doggies and a little orc lost their lives escorting one of Me's flying horses to the big farm in the sky. On a more positive note, one of the farm's flying horse did defeat one of Me's flying horse in solo combat - it was a close fight but due to superior kicking skills, the battle was won. Michael the angel, along with Wild Boar, had no problem getting rid of Me's ghost... Meanwhile, the news from the Southwestern front was also bleak. Casper and his griffin friend was killed in cold blood in the hills when they were observing a moment of slience over Larson body - all farm animals morned the passing of Casper. However, what do you expect when a ghost meets an angel? Piglet, realizing that he needed help, found a Demon, Diablo, in the middle of a swamp. Diablo revenge the death of Casper where he disbanded the foul Blue Angel - Crash and Burn, baby! *Diplomacy* Yellow: Come and get it! Red: Proposal entered as you have stated. We will have a non-aggresive agreement until the end of the 15th day. In the unlikely event that if you deceide otherwise after the 15th day, which I doubt you will given our increasingly positive relationship, we would like to request an 1-day notificaiton of our intension. As you can see, we held up our end of the bargin and left the center island lightly defended. We also took away the remaining Yellow threat. Per your request, we will not visit the Eastern temple and we understand you will not visit the Western temple. The Farm will not have any unit builds that takes more than one day in the center island. However, there may be occasions where some stronger units will need to pass through Valley Hut and Valley Shack before the hand-over take place - Sir Land's-a-lot the devil may need to guard Valley Hut tomorrow... [In response to your question of spliting the world between us, I cannot tell you if that's good enough to get you to round D since it depends on how other people did... We may have a better idea after the round A results are released. If it ever comes down to just you and me and we have a few turns to spare til the end of turn 20 - and that's a big *IF* since I am not sure how much pressure I can put on Blue because a 2nd front just started for me - I was thinking about a 3 or 4 cycle "highland games" towards the end where we fight for the center island and the center island only. That will allow us to have some fun while we wait and not have the outcome affect our respective standings too much since there are only 6 cities total in the center island. That was the "friendly competition" part of my message... We have to come up with some "rules" of course, but imagine this, a game within a game ;-] To Blue: You should listen to Mrs. McNasty more often. You know, flying drunk is against FAA rules ;-) Try to exploit us, isn't that what you do best? [FWIW, I am willing to discuss some of my "unconvtional" moves, especially with navies and such - a lot which I learned from Jim ;-) For example, the reason you see a Pikemen standing on the shore is because he was "bridge loaded" near Draw Bridge and "dropped off" by navies. One caution: if you plan to transfer a bridge loaded land unit in open water, you should have the navy receiving the land unit move into position first or the land unit may sink. In my example here is what I did: 1) Position a 2nd navy ready to receive the land unit in open water south of Draw Bridge 2) Bridge load the Pikeman with the 1st navy and move it to the waiting 2nd navy - *VERY IMPORTANT*: make sure you have at least 2 movement points left on both the 1st navel unit and the land unit or else if you click on a land unit/navel unit group in open water, the land unit will sink and if you have less than 2 MP left, Warlords will automatically de-select the group for you 3) Group the 3 units togather using the keyboard command while they are still highlighted 4) Remove the 1st navel unit from the group since it only has 2 MP left and will limit the range of the group 5) Drop off the land unit in a shore square with the 2nd navel unit - or else it will sink in the beginning of the next turn.
