__________ __________/ \__________ <__________ Turn 1 __________> \__________/ _______________________________________________________________________________ The following message was sent on Tuesday October 07, 1997 at 08:46 AM EDT by Alex Vickers to all players; Round A Rules Reminders! Last Updated 30-September-97 by Bob Heeter Read this message carefully - it contains a lot of essential information! *** Critical Scenario and Rules Changes from the Practice Round *** * Starting Gold: 4200/side * Razing: On Capture only * Round A games will last for 20 turns! * New Gold Rules: The gold limit for Strongholds is now 2500. All the gold is now in strongholds; revert until you get less than 2500. We recommend reverting to get between 2400 and 2500. (The odds of getting between 2400 and 2500 are about 10%, so this takes less reverting than trying to get near 3600!) * Special Builds: The center cities all build griffins! Sack 'em for cash - or build 'em! Note - griffins defending neutral cities are strength 8 (6+2). The neutral cities are set to "active" in the tournament. * New Rule: Two Heroes! You are allowed (and expected!) to revert and get a second hero on Turn 2. *** If you want a second hero, it MUST come ONLY on Turn 2. *** The second hero can come with *any* ally you choose in *any* city you control. You may not replace any dead heroes until *both* heroes are dead. Then the regular hero-replacement rules apply. (Note that once you lose a hero you cannot have more than one hero on the map.) Ask your Moderator or Headquarters for details. The starting gold has been increased to allow the purchase of the second hero. You must report the cost of the second hero and he/she must cost at least 1000 gold. * New Rule: Limited Allies with Replacement Heroes: After Turn 2, all replacement heroes may only come with wizards, ghosts, elementals, or worms. Archons, Demons, Dragons, and Devils are not allowed with replacement heroes - you can only get them from ruins or with your Turn 2 second hero. Warlord, use thy allies wisely! :) * Holidays: The U.S. Thanksgiving Weekend in late November and the midwinter holidays (from December 20 to January 7) will be official "Tournament Holidays". Time limits will not be enforced during those periods, and players do not need to worry about using up vacation time then, although we hope the games will all continue! We expect some games to finish before Christmas, and the rest in January and February. Round B will begin in mid-January after the winter holidays end! More timeouts will be supplied to all Round A players when Round B begins. *** Prizes for Round A *** The four Warlords who write the most entertaining game history will each receive a prize from SSG. The one Warlord who writes the best individual roleplay will also receive a prize from SSG. The awarding of both prizes will be determined after the round ends by a team of moderators (who will exclude themselves from recieving prizes). Finist looked into devoted eyes of the youth and sighed. Certainly, it happened before. When? Where? He didn't remember. One scout, one city, and the whole world full of enemies whose names one shouldn't say at night. The grim world. And he, the only and the last hope of the people, the people who thought him to be a savior who came from afar, the legendary hero who could save them, who would lead them to the victory... How many times have it happened before? He didn't remember. And he was so tired... He only wanted to rest, to relax. "Paris...", - whispered Finist. "Paris?" - scout was cheerfull. - "Yes, it's the ancient town just a little bit to the west from here. Very close. We'll have to make a camp only a couple times and we are there. I'll show you the way." Well, it's definitely not Paris that Finist remembered, but... "I'll find it myself. And you, scout... Can you ride?" "Sure." "OK, then find a horse and catch with me later. And remember - you're not a simple scout anymore. You're a cavalry. It's time to build armies! And why such a strange name for a city? Locker Room? Can we rename it?" Cavalryman shrugged his shoulders, "People like it. They would be unhappy, you know..." Start: 1 city, 4215 gold, 25 expenses, 0 experience. New hero, Finist, emerged in Locker Room. (BTW, Finist is a hero from Russian fairy tale, the mysterious prince who could turn to falcon. Yes, to falcon). Scout was disbanded. Finist took neutral Paris (one scout), pillaged 175 gold. New builds: Locker Room - Lt.Cavalry (200) Paris - Giant Bats (160) Final: 2 cities, 4030 gold, 60 income, 0 expenses, 2 (+2) experience. Previous battles have brought us up short, and I hereby begin my quest to return glory from infamy, a ticker-tape parade from the derision of defeat. Said that he needs my help there!", - cavalryman argued. "Look", - Sineglazka said tiredly, - "if everything that people tell about him is true, Finist doesn't need any help. Especially yours," - she added. - "Besides, now it's *me* who helds the Orange Banner, which makes *me* the supreme commander, and that means that you have to follow *my* orders. Is it clear? Great. And now tell me all that you know about our neighbors. I don't mean all these green-blue-whites, I'm asking if we can find some help here, in the forest..." "You must be crazy," - the youth laughed. - "Some help! So you want to know who lives in these forests? OK, there is a devil in the middle of swamps near Paris - that's right, the same city where Finist went to." "Well, Finist will take care about him, I'm sure", - Sineglazka interrupted. "Yeah, right! And to the south... Nobody really knows, but there are rumors about dragons and other winged monsters." - Archon indignantly moved his wing. - "Hmm, yes, I mean, sorry... Anyway, I've never saw the person who got help from a dragon. Actually, I've met only a few people who would brag that they saw a dragon and are still alive... I've heard that dragons love maidens though, especially virgins. I mean, dragons love to eat them... And the rest of the woods both to the west and to the east is inhabited by wolfriders. They are fierce and evil..." "...but you will bravely go to them and tell that either the first Wolfriders' army will be ready to march under my command next week, or the last Wolfriders' army will die within two weeks. You can go right now." "But... But wolfriders and orcs are our eternal enemies! Yes, I understand that we have even worse enemies, but why would we make alliance with the evil ones?" Sineglazka radiantly smiled. "When the evil ones fight the evil ones, the good ones prevail." Lightnings splitted the sky and Sineglazka saw in their light that Archon hardly moves against the southern wind. But they continued to struggle and finally gave up only after Archon saw the ruins of once proud castle among the giant pines. They spend a night in that forgotten place, and Sineglazka could swear that she heard something or someone walking by the distant corridors the whole night... In the morning, she found the ancient armory, but it was empty except the only still sharp spear, which, as Sineglazka decided, can serve her even better than sword, especially in air fights. The thunderstorm passed, and soon the travelers reached the Griffins city, also known as Amsterdam. They were greeted coldly, but later, when Archon proved that he can single-handly defeat the mightiest Griffin, some young Griffins promised to join Sineglazka's cause (sometime... later...), hoping to learn the new secrets of battles in the sky. Finist was enraged! His magic didn't seem to work in this world and that meant that he couldn't fly. However the world had its own magic - and the parisian gargoyles were alive! And *they* could fly - and Falcon managed to catch one of them. The trip over the swamps on the back of gargoyle noone would call dull, but the hero was glad when he was finally able to step on the ground. An evil presence eminated from this long abandoned crypt... Finist stepped inside with the sword in his hand... The devil who was so hated by Parisians was somewhere near, he could feel it... Finist was not sure if it was right. He used to hear a lot of stories about bargains with devil, but never supposed that he himself will get in such situation. Why didn't he slayed the evil creature? Well, he can always do it later, if the devil will not play by rules. But if the devil really can help to fulfil Finist's desire, as he promised, then... Oh well, at least Finist don't have to go to wolfriders now, Devil promised to take care about all "formalities" there. "Official part" :) Heroine "Sineglazka" (from another Russian fairy tale. As soon as I strapped them to my boots, I found my feet refusing to remain on the ground! I could fly over trees, rivers, even mountains at great speed! These will be most handy in the treacherous central regions of the island. While Finist metodically chopped off the legs of the giant Spider, the devil, growling with pleasure, attacked the cavalrymen, whose terrified horses were not much help in the narrow streets. After the battle was over, Finist saw that his faithful gargoyle was flying away, undoubtedly perturbed by the bloodshed. "Well, the war is the war", - thought the hero. "It was their fault, nobody asked them to summon the ghosts to service". He wanted to raze the spiders' nest, but decided that young spiders can be brought up to fight for the *right* ideals. Sineglazka came to the Harrison's House in the middle of forest. As wolfriders explained, the famous cartographer lived here in the times of old, but after finishing the map of the forest he went to south to map the Dwarven Hills and nobody have seen him since then. "Another score to settle", - Sineglazka thought. The house, however, was not empty. In fact, the new owners were the reason for Sineglazka's visit to this forsaken place - they were Wizards. She entered the house. The wizards raised from their chairs at the same time and the tallest one started to speak solemnly: "We knew about your visit in advance. You are Sineglazka. Many are my names in many countries. Alatar I was in my youth in the West that is forgotten, in the South..." "OK, OK, one name is enough for most people," - Sineglazka interrupted and turned to the second wizard. "And you must be?..." "Pallando" - he answered, slightly taken aback. "So, guys, I guess you know that the war started. Which side are you at?" The wizards looked at each other, than Alatar said: "We know what you have in mind, but we would rather prevent the war than to fight. If you give us the word, that you will not attack the dwarves without their provocation, we'll join you. We can protect the borders, but we don't want to attack the other peaceful people". "OK," - Sineglazka agreed. - "Just go to Seoul and see by yourselves, whether they provoke us or not". "We won't go. We'll fly" And so they did. Seoul. Wolfrider was mad. "It's crazy! She gives orders to not attack dwarves! Our eternal enemies! Whereas they are secretly preparing armies to attack us! Ah... I give up..." He picked up a few bottles of wine and retired to his tend. After the second bottle he got what seemed to be a brilliant idea, and started to write: " The message. To our southwestern brothers. Brothers! Wolfriders! Wolfriders will rule the world! Know that we hate the dwarves! And we hate their elven friends! Legolas-Shmegolas!" He hysterically laughed and then hiccuped. [ Michael, nothing personal. And I like Tolkien's books, but you know how rude these drunk wolfriders can be! ;) ] Suddenly the tent crushed on him. "Oh, sorry for that, there is just not much place for me on this yard, so I just wanted to move you a little bit farther" - he heard the dragon's voice. The wolfrider extricated himself from the ruined tent folds and ended the letter: "And we hate the dragons also! " Unsteadily moving on his feet, he found a scout and gave him a letter: "Go and give it to the Lord Shaw. It's easy to recognize him - he is the only person here who uses skis in summer. Or, and he can fly, by the way." And after saying this, he felt on the ground and peacefully slept until the dragon's roar greated the raising sun. We in the South appreciate the contributions of all > species of warrior, resisting instincts toward infighting in favor of > the greater good. Any further correspondence should be sent through > Finist or Sineglazka, to ensure their propriety. I place more trust in > the words and deeds of reputable warriors than those of individual > troops. > Yours, Lord Shaw" Someone really reads my "fiction" ! :) Well, I thought that you'll be confused ;). In my last message I only wanted to hint subtly (probably, too subtly!) that you can easily kill blue Dragon who otherwise can cause you great harm. However I did not want to make alliances, or explicity say "take your spider and griffin and attack his city". BTW, it seems that you just forgot to move that spider and thus he was killed by blue Heavy Cavalry :(. Fortunately for you, the Dragon did not pillage your city. Besides, I was going to "sacrifice" *my* dragon on my next turn - according to one of my plans I was going to attack blue worm+demon - and my dragon would die - but as it accidently happened, Michael did exactly what I wanted :) (And Wolfriders did not get your message, as they were killed...) Of course, all real diplomacy in future will go through my heroes or directly from warlord Falcon. *************************************************************************** Round A, Game A25, Turn 5, Side 2 (orange) Time for battle: ...And after saying this, he felt on the ground and peacefully slept until the dragon's roar greated the raising sun... And in the morning attackers came. The messenger, who was returning from Lord Shaw and muttering "who cares whether he uses skis in summer, it's winter now!", heard the noise of battle from far away and carefully stole to the city. He saw the terrible picture (cavalry and wolfriders fighted giants, whereas dragon desperately tried to evade deadly embraces of the giant worm, and, at the same time tried to fry demon) and decided against joining the battle. Instead, he ran to the forest to meet Sineglazka and the wizards. After hearing the grave news, Sineglazka exclaimed: "If it's not a provocation, than I've never seen one!" and was going to give Pallando orders to attack Sydney, but Alatar, however, managed to convince her to delay attack a little bit in hopes that messenger from south will come with gifts, apologies and explanations. Unfortunately, when Sineglazka reached Seoul, the battle was already over, and only the giant worm was crawling among the mutilated bodies. Sineglazka attacked before the worm was able to react and her attack was, as always, successful. After that, she send the messenger to Lord Aragon (aka Strider): "Lord Aragon! Your attack was treachery, cowardy and senseless! I might forgive the death of dragon and wolfriders, but at least you could spare my noble cavalry who never caused harm to your people and your land. And what did you achieve? Two of your mightiest armies are dead! Thus I challenge you: are you brave enough to come alone, without any of your armies onto the bridge over the Right Eye Lake? I give your my word that I will also come alone, without my armies, and then we will battle and let the mightiest hero (or heroine :) ) win! But if you're afraid, at least listen to my advice - immediately retreat with your armies (while you still have them) and then you'll be able to defend your land longer. If, however, you attack Dublin, you and/or your last giant worm will immediately die (I hope that you can see it!) and then your defenseless Koenigreich will fall in dust much sooner than you want! Sincerely, Sineglazka PS. From warlord Falcon: You can attack Seoul if you want. If you will not attack Dublin, as a reward, my Griffins will not attack your cities within at least five next turns. To show my good will, my Wizard did not attack your Sydney, although he had enough movement points to pillage it and then retreat to the sea. Falcon" And time for rest: Finist, tired after the last battle, decided to relax, and is there any better way to relax than to fly over mountains? Suddenly, cairn caught his attention. Finist descended and found a vast treasure! The hero decided to send gold to the capital to organize the Zoo for overall amusement and enjoyment. Instead of retreating to south, as he was advised, Lord Aragon gave orders to pillage Dublin! As one can understand, these news did not improve Sineglazka's mood, and she decided to visit Lord Aragon and explain him how rude his behavior is. Instead of polite conversation, the blue hero climbed on the back of his worm and tried to convince her that he actually is the prophet Muad'Dib and that he see the future in which the human race moves along the Golden Path, which means, in particular, that all Orange armies and all Orange cities should voluntarily change color to Blue. Sineglazka replied that he cannot be a true prophet, because if he really could see his near future, he would hide himself somewhere very far from here instead... [See details in WarBOT report below] Epitaph: "So young, so greedy..." The Wizard (Pallando) revenged for Seoul by killing all Sydney Giants. Smaller inhabitants of Sydney, dwarves, promised to fight on our side. "There's a devil waiting outside your door... How much longer?" - these were the words of the popular song that the Devil hummed when the message came from Finist, asking whether he (the devil) would like to investigate what white Archon and Demon are going to discuss on their forthcoming meeting near Antwerp. (Finist himself could not go there as he celebrated the Cavalier title in Berlin, and as much as Finist wanted to know what can Archon discuss with Demon - some theology points, maybe? - nobody gives orders to devil, that's why the message was so polite). The Devil grinned and went to Antwerp. Later, he replied to Finist that, unfortunately for the theology Devilopment... that is, development, the meeting was cancelled. One of the southern kings seemed to disappear. "Well, at least it explains the reckless behavior of Lord Aragon," - Sineglazka thought. "He followed the orders of the man who did not care about his kingdom anymore..." Still, she decided that a hasty attack, which would explore the fact that enemy cannot retaliate, would be a deed not proper for the real hero, so instead of it she went to the Birnbaum's Crypt with the chosen followers (who, although not numerous, would undoubtfully protect her in case if blue armies would suddenly move again). She found a chest of gold with a strange inscription "Vive la Remailer!" there. Remailer? Sineglazka has never heard about such hero... She also got news about the other southern king, whose hero will be proclaimed as a Cavalier soon. Sineglazka wanted to go and congratulate the mighty hero personally, but her advisers convinced her that such action of her might be wrongly interpreted as a violation of the "green" borders... :( Finist, after hearing the rumors from the west that his devil roams the hills killing everybody in sight, decided to go there to see whether it's true and to take a control over the situatition if needed. _______________________________________________________________________________ The following message was sent on Friday January 09, 1998 at 12:16 AM EST by Andrey Muravyov to all players; Game A25, Turn 8, Side 2 >The Reporters appreciate the respect offered by Sineglazka and Finist, >and wish to extend our congratulations on a mighty campaign. Best of >luck to you both in future endeavors, until we meet on the fields of >battle. Let that day be as far from the present as possible. These were really nice words, but what about your actions? During the long time Falcon's armies fighted the enemies on both fronts, whereas you were just sitting in your corner, saving money and armies and waiting for result. And now, when so many our armies died to make closer our victory, you decided to take a prize, attacking the weakened White and Blue. Well, it was not a problem on the southeast, as both of us are interested in killing as many of their armies as possible, before new *enhanced* armies arrive, but you undoubtfully could see that *we* are going to attack Simoon, as Moscow should rightfully belong to *us*. You, instead, decided to "retrieve Starter's Gun" - although you had no right to own it. It didn't seem likely that you wanted "The day when we meet on the fields of battle be as far as possible"! And so, considering all the facts, we decided that we really have no reason to delay our well-prepared attack on Moscow only because you became too greedy. And so we attacked, and our Archon, blessed by Gods, easily prevailed over both your forgotten-by-Gods Archon and your hero, who never became known as Cavalier. We buried Sir Blitzer near the hero Simoon. Sineglazka, who was proclaimed an Amazon, proved herself one more time by killing the last blue hero, Legolas, with the last non-orange Archon! And Finist could not stand behind either. After finding the Devil in the hills, he managed to send devil's destroying energy into the right channel. And so they came to the ancient city of Athens, where the corrupted leader of Backstick Boys, Lord Bazza, was spending the money that he got as Official Sponsoring, not on mighty armies as would be proper to the real hero, but on drinks, women and luxuries. Finist slained him, the devil sent Lord Bazza's dark soul to Hell, and the people of Athens rejoiced! (And now *our* nation is Sponsored Officially.) And so, Lord Shaw, now there are only three of us, three real heroes (Cavaliers and Amazon, to be precise), standing on this land! Falcon-- So be it. I merely regret your interpretation of my campaign, and > wish you had chosen a different way to say "The time is right". Sorry, I did not mean to offend you. Please understand that when "warlord Falcon" says something to his enemies, it doesn't necessarily mean that Andrey Muravyov says the same to Scott Watson, and when Falcon's armies attack someone, it doesn't mean that Andrey Muravyov doesn't like this player. Of course, I don't have any bad feelings toward you, or any other players. Actually, I was very glad to see that you killed white hero, but it would be too stupid for me to not attack your hero when I could do it, don't you agree? As far as I understand it, we never made any alliances, right? And of course I don't criticize your gaming style, you're playing defensively, but it's certainly OK. And I would say that your last turn, when you killed white hero was a great move, but only if you would retreat after that, or protect your hero. I would sincerely congratulate you. But as it happened, I see it as a serious mistake that you made, and I hope that you will play more carefully in future, and that you will not repeat such mistakes in the other games. When one plays "Warlords" against human opponents, his first serious mistake usually becomes his last mistake. Concerning "the time was right" - you certainly had to expect that I will attack you sooner or later, but I would wait for several turns before doing it, as I don't think that "the time is right" yet, but, as I said, if one sees the good oportunity for himself, why shouldn't he use it? I repeat, that I would definitely not do it if we had alliance, but we had not, so I don't think that what I did was wrong. About my interpretatoin of your campaign - I think that you want to have at least 25% of the cities in the end, that's why you're producing slow spiders everywhere. And it's true, I will have a hard time attacking you, but i don't think that you'll be able to successfully attack me either. [Well, frankly speaking, I'm a little bit afraid that you'll find a way to attack me, so I'm always checking everything several times before sending my file :) ] Andrey _______________________________________________________________________________ The following message was sent on Monday January 12, 1998 at 06:53 PM EST by Scott Watson to all players; Andrey-- (not Falcon) You did not offend me. Falcon, however, did so by exposing my lack of thoroughness. Despite the fact that I do not use a game alias, I am capable of separating myself from my Warlord. I do not fault your play, only possibly Falcon's gloating, which I also do not take as coming from you, but from your consistently proud Warlord. No worries. While I may not be happy with Falcon, I would never take personal offense or hold a grudge against you. I think, any warlord should gloat a little bit when winning :), and anyone should try to make an impression that it's his side who are fighting against the ultimate evil, and if he is attacking, it's only because it's either only preventing strike, or because he wants to liberate citizens of another country from their lords' insufferable oppression... And it's not only in the game, just look at any government, from the US to Russia... Thanks, Scott :) Andrey ************************************************************************* Game A25, Turn 9, Side 2, orange "These are the boring times, when one can travel amongst the enemies without fear that she will be attacked," Sineglazka thought, passing Grenoble, whose defenders, although waving their pikes above the walls with animosity, haven't tried to really attack her and her companion. "I would think that Lord Shaw might already take care about these remnants of Koeningreich before my arrival, but no... At least my armies converted Blue C.d'Amprezzo into the Orange one..." And it was as boring on the northwestern front, where inhabitants of White capital, I.O.C., even haven't tried to show any enthusiasm about defense of the city, and gladly signed the capitulation act when Finist proposed it... And so, although we adviced Scott to reconsider his actions and retake his turn, he left it as it was (Scott, you did not have to attack that city at all, or you could at least bring some additional armies with your hero). And so his last hero, Lord Shaw, was slain by Sineglazka. Actually, Sineglazka had other plans, she was going to attack Blue Capital and to visit Aubert's Crypt along her way, but after hearing the news that the last enemy hero with the last dragon hides himself in a city nearby, she decided to change them (her plans, not a hero with a dragon). Flexibility of mind is a necessary feature for a real hero(ine)! And Sineglazka realized that she had to act fast, or the voracious dragon would eat all inhabitants of Grenoble... Not much happened otherwise. We took a couple more cities and moved our armies into strategic locations, from which we will soon start our final attack. And finally the land will be united! "Spectators, thy empire has fallen!" Sineglazka patiently waited in the hills near Rio, until the tired messenger came from the east. "Oh mighty Amazon," he said, "the wizard Pallando sent me to you to tell that the capital of Blue Knights has finally fallen." "This is well", Sineglazka replied, "as undoubtfully no Blue armies will resist us after that". The messenger grinned. "Actually, some infantrymen in Calgary tried to resist, but they were taken care about." And so Sineglazka waved her Standard from the top of the hill and the final campaign was launched. Our armies were coming to the Green cities from all directions, and the defenders, although brave, were overwhelmed soon. When the night has fallen, the armies stopped and the stories were told at the campfires - but not everybody believed all these stories, there were some skeptics who doubted that our heroine could really descend from the skies, attacking enemies at several places at the same time... The stories about the merciless heroine, however, were true, but now, at night, alone, she was crying, because one of her faithful followers, the one who fighted shoulder to shoulder to her with all battles, the wise and gentle wizard Alatar, was killed in battle today...
