__________ __________/ \__________ <__________ Turn 1 __________> \__________/ _______________________________________________________________________________ The following message was sent on Monday October 06, 1997 at 07:03 AM EDT by Tournament Headquarters to all players; Hi all - This message contains some important notes about the special rules for Round A. Read it carefully! -- Bob Round A Rules Reminders! Last Updated 30-September-97 by Bob Heeter Read this message carefully - it contains a lot of essential information! *** Critical Scenario and Rules Changes from the Practice Round *** * Starting Gold: 4200/side * Razing: On Capture only * Round A games will last for 20 turns! * New Gold Rules: The gold limit for Strongholds is now 2500. All the gold is now in strongholds; revert until you get less than 2500. We recommend reverting to get between 2400 and 2500. (The odds of getting between 2400 and 2500 are about 10%, so this takes less reverting than trying to get near 3600!) * Special Builds: The center cities all build griffins! Sack 'em for cash - or build 'em! Note - griffins defending neutral cities are strength 8 (6+2). The neutral cities are set to "active" in the tournament. * New Rule: Two Heroes! You are allowed (and expected!) to revert and get a second hero on Turn 2. *** If you want a second hero, it MUST come ONLY on Turn 2. *** The second hero can come with *any* ally you choose in *any* city you control. You may not replace any dead heroes until *both* heroes are dead. Then the regular hero-replacement rules apply. (Note that once you lose a hero you cannot have more than one hero on the map.) Ask your Moderator or Headquarters for details. The starting gold has been increased to allow the purchase of the second hero. You must report the cost of the second hero and he/she must cost at least 1000 gold. * New Rule: Limited Allies with Replacement Heroes: After Turn 2, all replacement heroes may only come with wizards, ghosts, elementals, or worms. Archons, Demons, Dragons, and Devils are not allowed with replacement heroes - you can only get them from ruins or with your Turn 2 second hero. Warlord, use thy allies wisely! :) * Holidays: The U.S. Thanksgiving Weekend in late November and the midwinter holidays (from December 20 to January 7) will be official "Tournament Holidays". Time limits will not be enforced during those periods, and players do not need to worry about using up vacation time then, although we hope the games will all continue! We expect some games to finish before Christmas, and the rest in January and February. Round B will begin in mid-January after the winter holidays end! More timeouts will be supplied to all Round A players when Round B begins. *** Prizes for Round A *** The four Warlords who write the most entertaining game history will each receive a prize from SSG. The one Warlord who writes the best individual roleplay will also receive a prize from SSG. The awarding of both prizes will be determined after the round ends by a team of moderators (who will exclude themselves from recieving prizes). _______________________________________________________________________________ =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Tournament Game: "A16" Turn Number: 1 Gamefile Sent To: OfUnknownOrigin (Orange) (bahughes@execulink.com) Date Sent: Tuesday October 07, 1997 at 09:57 PM EDT Date Gamefile Due: Thursday October 9, 1997 at 9:57 PM EDT (In GMT-0500: Thursday October 9, 1997 at 8:57 PM) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- A message from Pooh (White) dated Tuesday October 07, 1997 at 09:57 PM EDT; Hero Dylan's Dad takes neutral Athens. It is a great honour to be the first non-earthers chosen to lead the Athletes into battle in these Olympic Wars! To paraphrase some ancient Roman guy; We come to earth not to bury it, but to praise it . Our great hero Fast Breeder's first act of generosity was to disband the loyal but lowly group of Scouts, who were blocking the entrance to the Locker Room, and give their heads to the Scottish contingent for soccer practice. I suppose we'll eventually inform them that they are here for combat, not athletics. After long debate a new build of Light Cavalry was chosen both because of their speed and the fact that they'll make a nice "light" snack as the War progresses. Fast Breeder headed east and found the neutral city of Paris where he pillaged the Souts that were there, but not before asking where he could find a decent French restaurant and a nuclear reactor. Paris has since been re-tooled for Pikemen. Call to Arms. Ted Turner III watched with impatient eyes as the Tournament messenger approached. Ted, always aware of events before anyone else, knew the purpose of the messenger arrival. "Why all the formality?" he asked himself. Ted had readied all of the CNN staff months ago for the medieval fantasy theme, instructing them in the arts of arcane magic. The Tournament messenger had arrived and presented the call to arms to his lead media advisor. "War now begins!!!" Ted exclaimed. The magic power inherent in those three words rushed towards the tournament messenger, killing him instantly. Ted quickly summoned his ravenous media scrum hordes, lead news wizards, and poetic war-trained bards, for teleportation to the battlefield.... Never one to pass up a challenge, Fast Breeder ventured on to entice the Devil into joining the Athletes' worthy cause; he accepted. After dispatching the Scouts which guarded the gates, they spent the rest of the day looking for Helen of Troy commemorative plates. Meanwhile, back at the swamp. The Devil had become restless and tired of Fast Breeder dragging his feet. He moved on to purchase the souls of the Scouts that infested Amsterdam. How goes the battle in The Couch? MAYOR: The battle goes well, good hero. The enemy fears to battle us, EP: Excellent, then you won't be needing me here. MAYOR: Although your presence is an honour here, I must confess to feeling the pull of battle and excitement elsewhere for you. In some ways your leaving would be beneficial also.. The demon you brought with you has eaten three of our children already. EP: Then I shall leave. Sheath a sword for me, give me armour, and lend me a fine horse with which to do battle. Now, which city shall I go to to recruit more fine men for this task? MAYOR: City, sir? Elvis Pelvis then takes C D'Ampezzo, and pillages it for 175. The scout training hall was torn apart by his sword, then he waited patiently for the demon to consume each and every scout within. It has been rumoured that the scout-leader was more than 299 years old, and was on his last day in the scouts before his retirement. His last words were said to be, "Goodbye, scouts. Do me proud. Frank frees the demon who slays everyone in the Fort, and everyone within a thirty mile radius, then joins Frank on his mission. Meanwhile, a dwarf sneaks under the barricades of Calgary and takes control of it before anyone has even realised he'd arrived. He pillages the city for 175 gold. On the other side of the Spectator's land, Elvis Pelvis is taking a break from random massacres, taking the time to explore Yuri's Cenotaph. Inside it he finds three giant worms willing to join him. Elvis Pelvis reluctantly agrees, and allows the foul beasts to follow from a distance. Eventually, however, his blood instincts overcome him, and he slays one of them before it has a chance to say, "Damn you, Elvis Pelvis!" Griffin bought in Sapporo for 1700. Dwarves bought in Calgary for 450. ************************************************* "This orange juice is wonderfully cold." Very troublesome indeed. While to the south, Blue's hero has gathered a formidable army of unnaturals. Both of these events have influenced The Terrestrial War Council to limit expansion during day 4 to see how they play out. Perhaps a mistake, perhaps not, we shall see. Olympia was too tempting a target for the frisky Light Cavalry to ignore. They headed west at a gallop, and reached the gates of the city in no time flat. Once there, they trampled all opposition under hoof. On instruction of The War Council, Olympia has been retooled for Spiders. Fast Breeder ventures south to Kay's Crypt. For all it's assistance the Giant Bat is repaid with a permanent vacation. I mean, why hang around with a bat when you can party with a dragon? Farther west, Robin and the archon go to Ivan's Palisade after being informed that the coffers need an infusion of gold. After searching many vaults, Robin retrieves 2476 gold pieces. Then he and the archon rest in the relative comfort of the Palisade. In light of the previously mentioned events to the west and south, London and Mt. Just as he is about to set his demon loose on the mid-wives convention, the mayor of the town walks quickly up to Elvis Pelvis and draws his sword. "Elvis," the man says in a gruff, stern voice. He is seven foot tall, with a body like a tree trunk. "That's Mr Pelvis to you," the hero mutters, the absence of pained, tortured screams making him feel empty inside. "Mr Pelvis," the mayor continues. "If you let our women and children live, you may take our men for your slaves, and you may use our resources for your own benefit. If you do not agree to these terms, I shall be forced to end your quest here, and spill your blood upon our town square." Elvis Pelvis stares at the men, casually chews up a piece of metal, and spits it on the ground. "I've got another set of options for you," he says. "Either I remove your head now, or I wait until my demon has devoured the rest of you." With that, the giant mayor attacks. Within seconds Elvis has decided the mayor had accepted the first option, and duly complies. Within ten minutes, the town is his, the women and children have partially filled the stomachs of his demon and worms, and he's allowed the men to live, so they watch as their wives and children scream. Elvis grins, and cackles hysterically as he pillages their scouthall for 175 gold. On the other side of the land, the slightly less evil, but no less heroic Frank takes the city of Garmisch-P, pillaging it for 175 gold, then quickly moves on. In his travels, however, his demon is beginning to give him trouble. The demon is becoming restless, and has been talking of joining Elvis Pelvis where, to quote, "Some serious killing gets done." Frank is forced to allow the demon to eat some women and children just to get him to Langer's Lair, but once he's battled a Mighty Injury, Frank stumbles across Anton Geesinks Belt. He wears it, confused, worried that it could produce adverse side-effects. At first he feels nothing. He steps outside, and thinks it is useless. "Come on," he says. "Let's go destroy a city." To his surprise, the demon replies, "Certainly sir, it would be my pleasure." Smiling, Frank realises his command skills have increased by two. The demon rebellion has passed. Meanwhile, the dwarves are continuing their rampage in the south, taking Rio with weak opposition, and immediately declaring a law that all doors should be made exactly one metre smaller. They pillage it for 175 gold. Wolfriders bought in Sydney for 450. Heavy Infantry bought in Rio for 300. Dwarves bought in Garmisch-P for 450. He was sickened at the drab grey appearance of the once magnificent Capital, and vowed to restore it to its past glory(or die trying;). He caught the Scouts asleep at the gate and bit all their heads off, sticking them on Pikes along the Appian way. Romulus reflected, "That's more like it." Romulus called upon the unit of Light Cavalry that he passed along the way to join him in his busy task of refitting Rome for new armies. They will also be useful for rehabilitating the gardens. The city-folk scream, but he is not interested. All he is interested in is the gigantic egg he can see, standing in the middle of the town square. He cannot identify it exactly, but he knows one thing. It's going to be tasty. The Griffin screams a cry of attack, and swoops towards the egg. The egg starts to move, starts to run away, but the griffin is too quick. Soon he has the round, pink egg in his talons and is devouring it with great aplomb. Seeing as how Jim the bald mayor is now dead, the griffin discovers he has captured the city. He also discovers he will never go hungry again. The scouthall is quickly dispatched of for 175 gold. Elvis Pelvis watches this with interest. He is impressed with the ruthless killing the griffing employs, and has been growing tired of making conversation with two worms and a demon. The previous day he found himself making bets on which worm left the most sludge behind him. He needed fresh blood in his team. He needed a griffin. Wiping the worm sludge from his boots, Elvis sets off to Dublin. He spots Seoul on the way, however, and finds himself drawn to the city, unable to make the long Dublin journey without brutally killing some innocents on the way. After pillaging the city for 175, he quickly sets off on the path of Dublin again. At the city walls, the griffin who runs the city comes to the front gate. Elvis Pelvis points to his sword, then to the griffin's chest. The griffin squawks in defiance, and Elvis screams a wordless yell of impending death. The griffin flaps its wings and soars towards him. With a mighty leap Elvis jumps on its back, then directs it to fly towards his demon and giant worms. Robin was also instructed to avoid capture for that would surely mean his death. After completing the first part of his mission, Robin boldly ventured on to Lake Placid. Seeing the city left totally unguarded Robin took the opportunity to loot 3 gold and burn Lake Placid to the ground thereby reducing Blue's income and furthering the goal of The Terrestrial War Council. As he rises to his feet, he smells smoke. He turns, and suddenly notices the pained screams from Lake Placid, as well as the crackle of burning flesh. While he had his back turned, the Athlete hero, Robin, had made the ultimate move of cowardice.. He had destroyed Frank's town, then run for cover in the mountains. Frank grimaces, but he is far too mature and sensible to seek revenge. He is an experienced hero, not a fighter. He works with his mind as well as his sword. Accepting fate, Frank heads off to Dublin, sensing that his less experienced, but far more psychotic, fellow hero will not take the news well. Elvis Pelvis was sitting in Dublin, playing a game of cards with his demon, when he heard the news. He was told more than an hour after Lake Placid had burnt to the ground, because all the people in the village had been too afraid to bring the message. Finally, five of the biggest, strongest men in town stepped into Elvis' hut.. "Mr Pelvis," the biggest man said, still cringing backwards. "We have bad news.." Elvis turned, and without thinking placed a hand on his sword. "What is it?" "The Athletes have burnt Lake Placid, and may be heading next to Garmisch, which remains undefended.." Elvis remains silent.. He swallows deeply, and rises slowly to his feet. He tries to speak, but the rage is caught in his throat. He cannot bring himself to make a noise, cannot do anything.. Except remove his sword and attack the messengers. The biggest one screeches, raises his sword, and Elvis cuts it in half, along with the man's head. The other five scramble for the door, but with a scream of uncontrolled rage, Elvis throws his sword away and dives at them, throwing them to the ground and beating them to a pulp with his fists and feet. When they are all dead, and the demon has eaten them, Elvis takes his sword back, and sticks it into the wooden floor of the hut. He speaks, his voice so coloured with rage that the words are little more than a whisper, yet the demon cannot help but fall to his knees, terrified by the anger in his voice.. "I swear that from this day, the Athletes will feel my vengeance more terribly than any man I have ever met. I shall destroy all who stand in my way, and employ such torture methods that those who live will be driven insane within days. Let the hero take Garmisch, I care not.. I wish only for blood, not stone, not gold.. Today begins the end of the Athletes, and each death will be found at the end of my sword and my sword alone.. Tell Frank to leave them be... I shall seek his revenge, and my own one hundred times over!" With this, Elvis Pelvis grabs his worms and his demon and walks out of the city, leaving it completely unguarded, yet leaving the citizens very relieved. Frank shakes his head at the impulsivity of his young companion, and quickly calls for help to defend Dublin.. As he sees Elvis running, screaming, off into the distance, he prays to the gods that the boy's skill in battle is as intense as his temper. (Sorry, it had to be said) Greetings fellow Warlords. May we have a moment of silence to remember Frank and Elvis Pelvis, heroes who fought bravely but not too well. Bottom Burp apparantly has confused good strategy with cowardice and empty threats and rage with good strategy. I can only assume that it was anger that lead Bottom Burp to leave his two brave heroes open to attack and subsequent death. The Terrestrial War Council assessed the threats of death and torture as idle rantings but decided to put an end to such drivel. Robin, aided by his faithful Archon, swung north to join a group of Wizards who, under cover of a clever spell, managed to cozy up to Frank's encampment. "Why would they camp on the plain?", queried the Archon. Robin responded, "We shouldn't question providence, just be glad they did." During the ensuing battle, Frank's Demon managed to smote a Wizard. Upon seeing his comrad fall, the remaining Wizard redoubled his efforts, and with the aid of Robin and the Archon the Demon was killed. Turning to Frank, the intrepid band launched into a full assault on the gallant hero. After Frank was beheaded Robin turned his carcass upside down and gave it a mighty shake. Out of his pockets flew the Merchandizing, from around his waist fell Anton Geezik's belt, and from his cold dead hand dropped the Cyan Standard. ---------======= The Death Of Frank (Bottom Burp Hero)========------- WarBOT beta 8 Armyset: Tournament b1-4 WL version: PC Classic Intense Combat: Off Terrain: Open/bridge/swamp Hero Bonuses Non- For- TOTAL Minus Fly Natural Item Hero tify City Cancel BONUS Enemy Item -------------------------------------------------------------- ATT: 1 0 2 0 H *1* 0 No DEF: 1 3 1 0 0 N *1* 0 No Entered Final Attack Units: Strength Strength Survival % --------------- -------- -------- ---------- *Hero 5 6 0.88717 <-- Lives! I'm sure you have noticed that Green and I have built up quite a front. I would like to propose a non-aggression pact, OfUnknownOrigin, so that each of us may pursue our respective fronts without having to divert forces to fortify our flanks. None of my armies will venture within a turn's movement of any of your cities as long as you do the same for me. Obviously this would not work for the easternmost of the central cities, so I would propose that I either build Lt. Infantry there but not amass more than 4 of them or that you take and raze it next turn to serve as a buffer. As far as our twin northern cities on either side of Bob Heeter's Bar, I would propose that neither of them contain more than 2 armies capable of marching to the other's city in one turn at any time. Let me know what you think before I make my movement so that I may withdraw fast-moving forces from my "twin" city if necessary. _/_/_/ CompuPick - "Knowing the TRUE Line" _/_/_/ _/ http://www.CompuPick.com/ _/ _/ / _/ _ _ _ _ Gary S. A dwarf replies that that seems reasonably apparent, given that the only part of Elvis Pelvis they could find was his right hand, still clutching the handle of his sword. Frank's gravestone reads: "Here lies Frank, once known as one of the greatest heroes alive. Now merely known as one of the greatest heroes. Rest in Peace." Elvis Pelvis' gravestone had been carved by Elvis himself in his death throes, having realised his impending doom, chipped away a nearby stone with his teeth. It simply reads: "I'll be waiting in Hell..." As silence decends over the crowd, a young child suddenly speaks. He is an innocent youth, not yet able to hate. He says loudly, "Where is Bottom Burp?" But no-one replies. Meanwhile, in a deep, deep hole near The Couch, Bottom Burp lies, sobbing, scared for his life, devastated at his idiocy. His own people hate him, heroes fear to join him, for fear that they too will have their lives sacrificed in some blatantly ridiculous manner. Bottom Burp tries to explain he was distracted by law exams, but the people do not listen, and well they should not. It has taken a while to shake the rust off the troops. A couple of weeks lounging by the pool drinking Chivas and chasing harlots takes the edge off even the most battle hardened soldier. As a warm up, Robin was sent south to the Alpine city of Grenoble. A cry of "lay off the chocolates" echoed in his wake. Robin and his cohorts waddled up to the city gates and knocked three times. Alas, there was no one home to help whip them into fighting shape. He took the 28 gold pieces anyway. "All I know is that we have done nothing for more than a month. Times are quiet, and our leader has been on vacation." "Where did he go?" The woman has just opened her mouth to reply when the guards come storming through the door of their house. "Get up, everybody!" they scream at the woman, throwing her into a wall and grabbing the child. "The others are attacking, we need recruits! Let's go, kid!" As the child is pulled by the hair through the door, the woman yells, "But he's only three years old!" The soldiers do not respond, and moments later the boy is practicing blade combat with a four year old blind girl. The boy learns quickly, and within weeks he is battling rampaging griffins with his bare hands. He may be three years old, but his teachers quickly discover he has the strength and dexterity of at least a four year old. "This boy could be our next hero," a wizard mutters, watching the boy slaying ten demons simultaneously using nothing but a slab of beef. "But he is only three," a soldier replies, as the boy beats a dwarf to death using a rotting piece of bark from a nearby tree. "We need a leader now, before we are destroyed completely." The wizard looks thoughtful. "Perhaps," he says, rushing to his house. "Just perhaps, I can help..." The wizard looks on thoughtfully. "It is time," the wizard says, laughing hysterically. The townspeople look at him curiously, and the wizard stops cackling, and retreats sheepishly into his cottage. For the next few hours, he takes exact dosages of hundreds of different magical implements - 3 archon wings, 4 griffin talons, the magical flames of a female demon, amongst other things.. The mixture bubbles, boils, creates a noxious gas which kills several people in the village. But the wizard looks on, his face gleaming with evil.. Finally, the mixture is complete. The wizard steps outside, holding a glass of it triumphantly. "Here," he says, giving it to the young boy. "Drink this." The boy drinks it. His eyes pop open, he begins to spasm. As he twitches, the sword he is holding slices the wizard in two, and also knocks over the entire cauldron of remaining potion. As the villagers watch, the boy grows. Muscles explode under his shirt and pants, ripping them to pieces. The innocence in his eyes falls away, and he takes on the look of a seasoned killer. Finally, the transformation is complete. In the centre of the town, where once a young, yet deadly boy, stood, now stands the greatest killing machine on earth. The boy will accept the much revered title, "Hero". "Find me an ally," the hero grunts, not looking up. "But sir, it will take some time..." The hero snarls menacingly, and stomps off to sleep in a bale of hay in the horses stable.
