__________ __________/ \__________ <__________ Turn 1 __________> \__________/ _______________________________________________________________________________ The following message was sent on Monday October 06, 1997 at 08:56 PM EDT by jpanagos@cellophane.com (Jim Panagos) to all players; I have sent the starting gamefile so the war can begin :-) please be aware of the following: Read this message carefully - it contains a lot of essential information! *** Critical Scenario and Rules Changes from the Practice Round *** * Starting Gold: 4200/side * Razing: On Capture only * Round A games will last for 20 turns! * New Gold Rules: The gold limit for Strongholds is now 2500. All the gold is now in strongholds; revert until you get less than 2500. We recommend reverting to get between 2400 and 2500. (The odds of getting between 2400 and 2500 are about 10%, so this takes less reverting than trying to get near 3600!) * Special Builds: The center cities all build griffins! Sack 'em for cash - or build 'em! Note - griffins defending neutral cities are strength 8 (6+2). The neutral cities are set to "active" in the tournament. * New Rule: Two Heroes! You are allowed (and expected!) to revert and get a second hero on Turn 2. *** If you want a second hero, it MUST come ONLY on Turn 2. *** The second hero can come with *any* ally you choose in *any* city you control. You may not replace any dead heroes until *both* heroes are dead. Then the regular hero-replacement rules apply. (Note that once you lose a hero you cannot have more than one hero on the map.) Ask your Moderator or Headquarters for details. The starting gold has been increased to allow the purchase of the second hero. You must report the cost of the second hero and he/she must cost at least 1000 gold. * New Rule: Limited Allies with Replacement Heroes: After Turn 2, all replacement heroes may only come with wizards, ghosts, elementals, or worms. Archons, Demons, Dragons, and Devils are not allowed with replacement heroes - you can only get them from ruins or with your Turn 2 second hero. Warlord, use thy allies wisely! :) * Holidays: The U.S. Thanksgiving Weekend in late November and the midwinter holidays (from December 20 to January 7) will be official "Tournament Holidays". Time limits will not be enforced during those periods, and players do not need to worry about using up vacation time then, although we hope the games will all continue! We expect some games to finish before Christmas, and the rest in January and February. Round B will begin in mid-January after the winter holidays end! More timeouts will be supplied to all Round A players when Round B begins. *** Prizes for Round A *** The four Warlords who write the most entertaining game history will each receive a prize from SSG. The one Warlord who writes the best individual roleplay will also receive a prize from SSG. The awarding of both prizes will be determined after the round ends by a team of moderators (who will exclude themselves from recieving prizes). later Jim the Mod JP Cellophane Square's home page http://www.cellophane.com Cel-lo-phane Square (sel'-a-fain skwar) n. 1. the Northwest's best stores for used and new CDs, tapes and records. 2. the best selection of independent labels, local artists and neat stuff you can find. 3. the coolest record store in the western world. Niun arises softly from the couch. These games will not be won from such a comfortable seat. He stretches for the first time, checking long unused muscles. He'll need to get fitter to win this match! He fires his butler, Scout, who has served him faithfully, yet at great expense, for many years. He arranges for the butler to be replaced by a rather scruffy dwarf. At least the dwarf won't drink all the wine, because he's too short to reach the higher shelves! Then Niun starts off at a slow and painful jog to C.d Ampezzo. This is not the closest place, but the way is paved and then grassy so he does not trip too many times. By the time he gets there, he is staggering, but promises himself to do better and travel further - soon. As he sinks into exhausted sleep, squashing and killing the resident butler, he sees a vision of a golden Slavic dwarf. ======================================================= REPORT FOR TOURNAMENT ROUND A, GAME 13, TURN 1, SIDE 4. ======================================================= Gold at Start of Turn: 4390 Niun (hero) emerges in The Couch. On the ensuing play, a brilliant pass to her Demon linemate scores another goal in the neutral city of Paris! The 175 gold that is pillaged only adds to the excitement! Not to be outdone, a wolfrider from the Locker Room jumps on to the ice and completes its own scoring play at Amsterdam - again, the 175 gold brings further excitement!!! Lord Stanley, seeing the play develope, feels its time to increase his scoring potential - he releases the two Wizards from Harrison House and allows them to run over the opposition; one takes Tokyo and the other Mt. As game time nears, it is decided that the team is yet to small to carry on.... While not willing to give up any present players, nor forfeit any further draft picks, it is noted that the free agent market has been relativly untapped.... So, without any delay a couple of signings are made.... Lady Bettman uses her feminine wiles at the Lair of Luther and signs one Devil (while others were willing, it was decided that in the interests of keeping costs down that only one was signed - however one was signed to a minor league contract and may be called up in case of grevious injuries to the team leaders!).... Not so persuasive in manner, the Lord Stanley uses a rousing speech to also make some signings.... One Dragon was signed at Kay's Crypt, and another sent back to the minor leagues..... As the game begins, the Devil, anxious to show his resolve to the team quickly races down the ice and scores on the lone defender of London!!! A wolfrider also scores in the first period, taking Olympia for the Orange!!! Score at the end of the first, Athletes 2, Neutrals 0.... As the second period begins, there is a slight change of game plans.... Seeing that they are playing a whilly inferior team, the Athletes decide that it is time to get ready for more worthy foes.... Two more quick goals result in a score of 4-0.... Each of the Wizards scoring goals - the result of a very balanced attack..... The third period becomes a practice for the Athletes.... Rather than attempting to score any further goals, they decide to Practice defensive strategies! Builds are made, plans are made, and the coach looks forward to playing the teams in the other confrences.... It was recently discovered that one of the goals scored during my last turn was called to 'instant replay' - and was disallowed due to an ally having a skate in Kay's crease!!! :-( Since I was watching another game at the time, this was not discovered until after I had sent my turn (although I did note the result in my turn report - just wish I had of checked the game file closer!!! :-( ) Please note that the Dragon I said was signed from Kay's Crypt on the last turn was not - but will be on this turn!!! ;-) The damn Dragon was a 'hold out' and contract negotiations have continued, but the Athletes now feel free to announce the Dragons signing!!! ;-) Having such a major set back this early in the season will be fully recovered from - but it has allowed the Blue Spectators to take a good starting position! This will soon be rectified as the Athletes slowly get back to the proper battle plan!!! Having lost the first match of the season to the Spectators, the Athletes quickly move and defeat the Spectators in two quick games - and leave some further 'easy' games to the Spectators in an effort to throw him off his game.... It is also seen that the upcoming games against the Organizers (White) will be very intertaining, high spirited affairs! The early season prize for these games (an annual occurance in this cross-confrence rivalry) is of course the flight item now stored at 'Bob Heeter's Bar!' Early indications is that the Organizers were poised to defend their position, having won easily last season, however, the Athletes do have a trick or two up their sleves that will leave the outcome of this epic battle in doubt!!! ;-) My crystal ball tells me that the final score will be 3-0 in favor of the Athletes, crushing the ability of the Organizers to fly their way to victory this season.... In an uncharacteristicly friendly move by the Athletes, they offer the chance for the Organizers to simply forfiet the prize, and then move toward the southern confrence in an effort for both teams to dominate the league.... Based upon the early season standings, this would be the most prudent move for both teams.... ;-) Game A13, Turn 3, Athletes (Orange) Coach; Iceman Start values: gold - 237 cities - 9 Lord Stanley corrects the error in the last Turn Report, and searches Kay's Crypt, signing a single Dragon to a,long term contract.... The Archon is soon enlisted as a team member and the angelic Being waves fondly as it flutters off to a nearby caslte to rest. Melein hopes it will be worth the water it drinks. Niun (with Mr Muscles) searches Langer's Lair. In this amazing place, a Traffic Jam has formed, and Niun flexes his muscles as he tosses the jammed traffic aside. Underneath the mess, he locates Anton Geesinks Belt (com+2), which is such an impressive item it allows him to boss the rest of the team around. (And the real trick is, they don't mind!) It fits snugly around Niun's rapidly shrinking waistline. Then Niun and Mr Muscles continue their slog through the hills in search of the real game. The camera briefly checks the progress of some dwarves and a stray worm. Well, the Londoners weren't too friendly at first, till Danna disposed of the few troublemakers there. They'd been acting as if they owned the place! Not wanting to hang around an unfriendly town, Danna and the griffin moved on to Steve's Hand, another good bar. But again, there were unfriendlies and they had to get rid of them before they could settle in and look around the joint. While they were looking around Danna found a Terrorist's Bomb and had to quickly defuse it. The barlady was philosophical about the bomb, but still was very happy to have it disarmed. She rewarded Danna with an Official Sponsorship for her good deed. The stupid dragon and Yewgul decided to stop waiting for Danna, and pay a visit to the Temple in the middle of the world. A couple of pikemen came along just to be blessed as well. An elephant who had newly arrived in the city, went chasing after them but only caught up after they had left the temple. Wirtel is still watching the Blues. He moved back to the other side of the ring again, becasue a city over there had lots of people going in and out, and he wanted a closer look. He's decided that there isn't much hope of making friends over here, but he might be lucky and find a nice empty city to have a party in, one of these days if he waits long enough. This, like >your decision, is in order to keep the peace - may we war only when the >other scourages upon this land are no more!!! > >-- DIPLOMATIC MESSAGE TO WHITE FROM GREEN: I wonder at your hasty decision to ally yourself with Orange -- a side which not only forgot to stop at a ruin to get a dragon, but does not even seem to know which city Berlin is. Orange seeks to gain your favor with empty promises, requesting peace "for the time being." What does that mean? Your mighty forces surely deserve a more worthy ally. Thus, I propose a truce between our nations. Why should we deplete our forces against each other while Orange is left unmolested to storm Blue territory? With the pillaging of Moscow and Atlanta this turn, you have little to gain by continuing to move your heroes south. As a token of good will, Madden is returning south and most of the Green forces are poised to head east. Upon your agreement to mutual non-aggression terms, I will withdraw my bat from your territory, and proceed with further downscaling of the Green/White front. Do not move Jan 1 further south into the Green quadrant, and I pledge to continue to move Madden to the southeast. A FRIENDLY SUGGESTION TO BLUE: Sorry about Oslo; your elemental was frightening me. I suggest you deal with your Orange wizard problem at once by moving your archon eastwards into the area. Please note that the Orange warlord has called us "scourages" (sic); I say we make him eat his words. And sometimes it seems that any advantage is well hidden. On reflection, I have chosen not to use the advice of my green colleague, although it was undoubtedly well meant. This may result in my downfall, but in my inexperience, I still prefer to use only advice which I can understand. Archons who are miles away spend unnessecary time travelling when other pieces are closer. Archons who attack alone tend to lose against wizards so matching flight capability is a bit pointless. The northern alliance appears to have weakened the southern teams somewhat, and thrown them into some disarray! Early victories can mean alot during the season!!! ;-) Some teams are thinking trades - not necessarily a bad move at this point of the season.... Green appears to have decided that his blessed elementals might be appropriate trade bait, and is presently showing them off to the Blue team - it is possible that he would accept a trade for one of the many castles now within their grasp!!! Blue appears to be willing to only trade movement for longevity - possibly a prudent move at this point!!! White, in a move that returns to the aggressiveness shown when he razed the majority of the center cities, makes hiw move toward the Green teams cities!!! And Orange, well they are ready to trade only continued alliance with White for the use of the Temple at the center of the map!!! Orange is certainly proud to report that at this point of the season that two of the top three heros are on the Orange team!!! Only Madden (of Green/19) has more - Lord Stanley now has 15 and has become a Cavalier, while the ever impressive Lady Battman has 17 and is now an Amazon.... With all Ruins and Strongholds searched, points will be much harder to come by, now that the defenses are tightening up! I repeat my assertion that the only way White will "win" this game is by allying with Green for a while. I have no idea how other sides are doing in other games, but that is the way it is in this one. Orange will continue to grow because it has more cities. If the North allies against the South, then White will expend more forces against Green than Orange will against Blue. And if White allows Orange to use the temple, then Orange will be even more powerful. >Personally, my take on the situation would be that >either White or Orange have the best chances of 'winning' the game if >they stick together for at least a few more turns.... I am not saying that White and Orange should fight at this time (although obviously it would benefit Green if they did so). It is certainly to Orange's favor to prevent hostilities until things are settled in the South. Soon Orange will face little, if any, threat from the South and will be able to focus all attention towards the west (White). White will still be dealing with Green, and then will be caught in the middle. >You may not realize the massive army build ups that are occuring on the >northern most borders of the White and Orange territories.... While Orange talks of a "loose" alliance, he builds an invasion force at London (notice the Orc). On the contrary, in good faith I have left the Green border with White relatively meagerly defended, as I promised I would, while concentrating forces on Blue. However, the recent buildup at the border has forced me to redirect troops towards the northern front. >I think that at >this point neither of us would like to put those forces into battle - >execpt maybe in the south where they could be MUCH better used! >However, I am not one who is inclined to make any formal Alliances - >none of this "I'll take this city, you that city" kind of deals.... Obviously, it is in my best interest to break an alliance between 2 of the 3 strongest forces. However, I honestly think it would be in the best interest of White to rethink the alliance as well. I would imagine that Orange will not respect the "loose" alliance for very much longer. Orange is brazenly sending a Hero towards White forces in the middle of the map this very turn. >>DIPLOMATIC MESSAGE TO SPECTATORS (BLUE) (from Green): >>Sorry about this. Whichever you prefer!!! Nightrazor (Green) responds: Orange talks of sympathy for Blue, while he occupies two of Blue's rightful cities. I admit that I too have harmed Blue, but I did so under no false pretenses. I certainly would not have been able to raze cities with the elemental if it were not for the Orange wizard's disruption of the Blue defenses. In my Turn 5 report, I told Blue to move the archon against the Orange wizard whose invasion was the beginning of Blue's problems. I was also trying to hint to Blue that it would be better to focus attention on the Orange invasion because Ditka was going to get the flight item anyway. However, I am not one to spell out exactly what a Warlord should do. I seriously contemplated telling Blue to raze Garmisch-P when she had the chance, as well as warning her that Rio was about to be annexed by Green. I thought that Blue would see the danger for Melein and relocate her to safety. Since she did not, I saw the opening and took it. I feel certain that Orange would have done the same. >DIPLOMATIC MESSAGE TO ICEMAN (ORANGE) (from Blue): >I thank you also for your kind thoughts. It was a pity that the last >such from Nightrazor was followed by a stab from behind... > >And now I ponder, whether to cling like a fading shadow to the remnants >of glory, or to burst in a last, glorious blaze! Nightrazor (Green) responds: Khaavren, I do apologize for killing Melein, however I do not feel it was a "stab in the back." I was very careful not to speak of any kind of alliance between us, because I knew that if Green forces were to expand, they would have to do so at Blue's expense. I had no intentions of entering your territory until Orange forced my hand by expanding so rapidly to the south. I could not afford to let Orange have a strong foothold so close to Green. I have been straightforward in my dealings with you, unlike the silvertongued Orange who speaks of sympathy whilst holding a sword over your realm. Orange pledges to not take Lake Placid, because he can't! What about C d'Ampezzo or even the Couch? Of course, he does not mention these future targets. Orange's sympathies ring hollow. I too pledge to let Niun remain in peace in Lake Placid, although I know I could not dislodge him either. I pledge to not raze Calgary next turn, which I could do successfully. It is up to you whether you go out in a blaze of glory. However, it is to your advantage to live as long as possible. By wastefully throwing armies at Green (or Orange), you will hurt your tournament ranking. I suggest building up a strong defense (and spending some money) before Orange sacks and loots you once again. First "scourages" (sic), now "Green Monsters"??!!? YET ANOTHER FRIENDLY SUGGESTION TO BLUE: I recommend sending a solo dwarf this turn from Lake Placid to raze Garmisch-P. This will benefit you by increasing the proportion of intact cities you hold, as well as depriving Orange of a nearby "staging area." Orange will not be able to retaliate for several turns, by which time Lake Placid could be virtually impenetrable. Again, I recommend spending money for defense (e.g., give each city 3 builds so that they are stronger). Provided Orange agrees to terms, I will grant your armies safe passage from Calgary to Lake Placid; and I will not attack Lake Placid unless another Warlord makes a move to do so. (Hint: don't forget to bring your Dwarf back to Lake Placid this turn) ORANGE: I now perceive you to be the greatest potential threat, and the greatest potential ally. Current and future acquisitions in the southeast could prove difficult to defend. Therefore, I propose we set up a dimilitarized zone (DMZ) between our forces in the southeast. I would ask that you not attack Blue in Lake Placid, in transit from Calgary to Lake Placid, or in Calgary (subject to the following). You need money. If/when Blue abandons Calgary, an Orange army could sack Calgary and return to the Couch. Then a green army would raze the city to complete the DMZ. First, sorry all for the delay.... And the controversy.... I'd like to note that the Moderators have discussed a similar circumstance, and I'm confident that my reasoning was correct. Essentially, once the vacation period began timeouts no longer counted - and would be returned by the Moderator if/when they occured! All I was trying to do was save the fall out of letting the timeouts continue to the point of the Remailer sending my game to the next player.... While sending my turn would have been the ideal solution, I just wasn't ready (things are still pretty busy around here!), so the next best solution was to suspend the game - luckily, I got some extra time today.... ;-) So.... Start: cities - 13 gold - 113 Lord Stanley - 17 exp. Lady Bettman - 18 exp. Minotaur kills lone white hv. inf. (no WarBOT necessary).... I'd like to note the agreement here is slowly disolving.... Mr. White Warlord, I note with some trepidition that your forces did NOT make moves of any consequence against the Green forces.... However, you did intend to build a tower nearer my cities! While I do admit that my own towers put many forces near YOUR homelands, I'd also note that I calculate your defenses and quite adequete to keep me at bay.... However, your forces in the center city (Munich) do have the tendency to cause my forces some fear.... If those forces were to make some moves toward the Green armies, I'd feel much safer and be willing to pull my forces back (as stated earlier!!!) Note that Green has been manouvering forces away from this area in an effort to minimize any effect of the possibility of me taking Blues castles.... However, I'd like to also note that Green has been making some interesting 'overtures of alliance' that have some VERY interesting proposdals - IF things do not move acceptably this turn I *will* have to seriously consider his proposals!!! Other than the killing of said lone hv infantry, there was only troop movements.... Note to Green and Blue - while I DO find Greens alliance proposal somewhat interesting, due to the razing of Garmisch-P I feel it necessary to extract a vengence from Blue - I WILL be taking at one of Blues remaining cities before the end of the game!!! Personally, as it was Lack Placid which was 'endangered' by Blues rash move (sponsered by Green's impressions), I would prefer that the choice of cites would be Lake Placid!!! Blue, please consider moving your forces FROM Lake Placid TO Calgary - and this would provide a MUCH better buffer in this area, eh Green!!! ;-) Further note to Green.... Again, while I do find your proposals interesting, I'd like to point out that I have much more to fear from White than from Green - White forces are much closer to me than Green!!! However, as I state above, if White does NOT make definate moves toward YOU on this turn, then a definate alliance would be possible!!! Assuming that White and Orange do not make moves to solidify a relationship, I would be more than happy to further discuss terms.... ;-) ANYWAY.... End turn: cities - 13 gold - 113 income - 300 expenses - 318 (note to all, I'm gonna have to get rid of some armies through attrition soon!) DIPLOMACY: BLUE: Obviously you are going to lose at least one city. It is in your best interest to make sure that you don't lose them both, and to survive as long as possible! Each city is in grave danger, and one or both may fall in the next turn or two. Orange has forced my hand towards Calgary by his massive vectoring into the area. Also, given your position, I would be very hesitant to take my last hero out of a defended city. The risk is simply too great to move Niun. Although the danger is great at Lake Placid, you should consider that none of the sides wants to see anyone else get Niun's command items, and would likely take preventative action if a move was made to do so. Therefore I strongly urge you to vacate Calgary now, this turn! I promise your troops safe passage from Calgary to Lake Placid if they leave now and do not attack Green forces. No Green armies will attack Blue en route (send them on the shortest path via the inner road), and I will not attack Lake Placid while it is held by Blue. But you must leave this turn! Soon Orange will be too strong in the southeast and Calgary will be overrun anyway. I think evacuation and consolidation of your forces at Lake Placid is your best option, perhaps your only one. To ensure that Lake Placid still stands in the interim, you must destroy the Orange "staging area" to the immediate northeast. I recommend sending Niun, the Demon, and the Worm to defeat the Orange Wolf, Hvy Inf, and Orc advancing upon Lake Placid, and then return them to the city unscathed. ORANGE: Lake Placid is a city with great strategic importance due to its location near the center of the map. I decided that it would be exceedingly unwise for me to concede the city to you (I hope that you understand, and that our potential alliance will be strengthened, not weakened, as a result). That is why I have recommended Blue's course of action (probably the best option for Blue, from a neutral standpoint). Assuming that Blue vacates Calgary, I am expecting you to sack the city for cash, as per the previous proposal. But you must leave no permanent garrison there, and I pledge to send an army to raze the city next turn. I have only moved Ditka into the area to ensure that you don't take Calgary with Lord Stanley. Please move Lord Stanley back north, and Ditka will return to Green territory.
