Heeter" to all players; TURN REPORT: A11, Turn 1, Side 2: The Athletes Take to the Field! =================================================================== It's morning on the east coast, and Curly, the beautifully bald basketball star of the Harlem Globetrotters, wakes up in the Locker Room. He's got a splitting headache and feels completely exhausted. The when he finally manages to open his eyes he finds himself dressed in some *extremely* strange clothes. He thinks: Man, must have been a wild night... :) Damn shame I can't remember any of it! He stands up gingerly as the fog clears out of his mind, and then he starts to remember things again. He remembers waking up in October '97 -- thats 1997 -- thinking it was time for a career change. Running the 'trotters was running him ragged, and life in the gym was starting to feel like an elevator with too many people on it. Claustrophobic, and when you got through all the ups and downs, you hadn't actually gone anywhere. Maybe it was a desire for new adventures, or maybe he was just crazy, but he'd believed that strange "Hegemon" dude who claimed he was looking for a "born leader" to run a sort of SCA-type medieval fantasy war show game gig deal thing. Whatever. Whatever it was, Hegemon said he needed an ace shooter who could drive the lane, slam the dunks, swish 'em from the 3-point line, never foul out, and do it all with class and a sense of humor. Like Curly. Flattery will get you everywhere, especially when the paycheck runs to 12 figures, even if they're dollars from A.D. 2100 and who knows what happened with inflation. 9 figures is a lot of figures, and 12 is astronomical! $500,000,000,000. Wow. You need scientific notation for those kind of numbers. But it really wasn't the flattery or the money, or even the fame that would come if Curly led his squad to victory. No, the thing that got him hooked was that Olympic Spirit. The thrill of victory. After leading the Globetrotters to 20 undefeated seasons against stage-managed guaranteed-to-lose opponents, there was no thrill left. And Curly wanted to savor a real victory again, against real competition, in a real Olympics. Hell, he was too old for the Sydney 2000 games, so why not try out for the Olympic Wars of 2100? Okay, so it was crazy. And that explains the headache and the sense of exhaustion. Jetlag, man, it gets you every time. Especially when the timezone shift is 100 years. And then they ask you to dress in styles that were out of fashion 1000 years ago! Makes for one hell of a costume party, he thought, looking down at his plate armor and checking the edge on his magical sword. Nice thing about modern technology is that this stuff doesn't weigh much, either! Irritable because of the timewarp lag, Curly swats aside some expensive-looking servant homeboy, and decides he needs some breakfast. Trouble was, he forgot that he was still holding that ultra-light, ultra-sharp, ultra-strong sword, and poor scout-boy got in the way. He thinks: Oops. No more scout boy. Ah well, he was useless anyway. Teach 'em a lesson. Gotta whip this team into shape before the other sides eat us for lunch! No more overpriced, good-for-nuttin, sluggish-as-hell boy scouts in this outfit. Gotta get lean and mean! Hmm, speaking of lunch... Gotta get out of the locker room and get something for this jetlag. Coffee. Of course, a few burgers and a light workout would help me stay in shape too. He heads for the exit, then pauses, spotting a pair of notes on the bench. What's this? Ahh, instructions from Hegemon. He picks up the first one. "Welcome to the Olympics! Some more scouts are waiting to serve you breakfast in Amsterdam. You'll get a nice jog through the woods on the way there. Check out this message from the Organizers and send me your thoughts." Wow. Curly thinks: Man, I just got up, and they already want me *working*??? Shit, I guess this is a real war. Let's do it! What's this from the Organizers? Gandalf the White offers a non-aggression treaty. Hmm! That will take some thinking-over. Curly scrawls a note to Hegemon: "Offer sounds intriguing, but let's see what the others say. Suggest we respond to Gandalf after hearing what the Reporters and the Spectators say, but before the Organizers' next move. Off to Amsterdam. Need cheaper, more efficient servants. Horses good. Light Cav?" And he takes off for Amsterdam, thinking: Hey, I dig these new shoes. Armored on the outside like the boots of a knight, but air-cushioned soles on the inside. Air Lancelot's, best they make. Not bad! He arrives at Amsterdam, does a little light pillaging for breakfast, and gives the scout-makers a quick training course in the virtues of ultralight aircraft disguised as giant bats. Then he whips out his laptop and his satellite-cell-phone, and begins recruiting the rest of his team. Dream Team XXV. Yeah. Twenty-fifth Olympic Dream Team. His first task is to march into the city Pseudopolis and demand - no, assume - their surrender. The surprised citizens can't even think about resistance in the face of Carrot's absolute conviction that he's doing the right thing. Next on the agenda is the delicate diplomatic situation of this first round. After much deliberation Lord Vetinari comes to the conclusion that contact with the Hegemon will probably come quite late in the game due to the geographic situation. This means that either Gandalf the White or BigMike is a potential ally, or at least possible partner in a non-aggression pact, while the other one then turns into the prime adversary. It had changed much from his last campaign in which he failed miserably. He hopes to start anew in this land and gain much prase and glory for the Spectators. In his first order of buisness as lord of the Spectators he sends the pitiful townsfold of The Couch off to the fields to farm the land, not wanting them to get in the way of his mighty conquerings. BigMike sets off North-West to the great city of Sapporo where he dispenses of the townsfolk there in similar fashion. He now sets his sights to production as he sets up Dwarves in The Couch and Spiders in Sapporo. A messenger arrives at the gates of Sapporo bring news from the other mighty warlords that also vie for control of the land. He reads the messages and shudders with fear of an alliance in the North for in his last battle a Northern alliance crushed him and his neighbor to the East. Heeter" to all players; Diplomatic Pouch from Hegemon of the Athletes to the Warlords of the Olympics: Greetings, all! It's an immense pleasure to contend with you all for dominance in this year's war. :) Win or lose, the joy of honorable competition is a great thing to experience! *** To Lord Vetinari of the Reporters: Welcome, forest brothers! We do not expect to come in contact with you anytime soon, and there is no point in a needless war of words, so we look forward to continued peace with you. As the war progresses, if we come in contact with you, we will be happy to negotiate before crossing swords. *** To BigMike of the Blue Spectators: We delayed our response to the Organizers non-aggression treaty offer in order to give you a chance to reply with a counteroffer. As your counteroffer was not to us, but an alliance offer to Lord Vetinari, it appears that there will be war between our kingdoms. If this is not to your liking, speak quickly! Perhaps it is not yet too late... *** To Gandalf of the mighty Organizers in White: We find your proposed non-aggression treaty very agreeable in spirit, although we wish to propose some revisions in the details. We believe that you are a Warlord of honor and skill, and we look forward to watching you go about your conquests, as long as they are not against us! You proposed: >"In the spirit of the legendary Organizer's peace in all Olympics >Games, I would be glad to sign with Athletes a non-aggression treaty >for the whole Round A. Indeed after consulting my War Council, I >reached the conviction that an alone country wouldn't be >able to get over the first cut without making clever strategical >alliances. We agree that a good strategic alliance is a good thing. So long as we have other enemies to fight, we shall not tangle with the Organizers. However, in the (unlikely) event that the Athletes should reduce the Spectators to 3 cities or fewer, we will have to seek new fields of battle. And we assume that if you were to vanquish the Reporters, you would also seek out new conquests. So we agree to a non-aggression treaty for the duration of Round A, with the provision that the treaty expires if/when (after Turn 5) either Green or Blue is reduced to 3 cities or less. Please let us know in your upcoming turn report if you find this acceptable! (It would be awfully boring to find ourselves on Turn 15 with no enemies to fight!) >So if you accept mine, which I really hope, I propose to >apply the first come, first served rule to fix our respective >borders and ruins. Anyway please let me know your >intentions, whishes and propositions soon." Although this is acceptable to us, we are somewhat afraid that this will lead both of us to send units needlessly towards one another. Please consider the following suggestions and then let us know which of the two options you prefer: Proposal 1: (Organizers) First come, first served for borders and ruins. Proposal 2: (Athletes) Each side is entitled to the ruins and cities on their respective side of the "Temple-Northern Flight Ruin Line" (the line running from the WarBOT temple to the flight-item ruin (Bob Heeter's Bar) in the north). The first-come, first-served rule applies only to the cities along the Temple-Ruin line (i.e., Berlin and Munich) and to the flight-item ruin (Bob Heeter's Bar). Thus each side is allowed to expand as it sees fit within its own home territory. Proposal 2b: The same as proposal 2, but with the suggestion that neither side should take the flight item from Bob Heeter's Bar, and both sides will simply leave that ruin unexplored. Let us know your thoughts as you make your move, and we will plan our own move accordingly! Heeter" to all players; Athletes' Update for A11, Turn 2, Side 2: ============================================================================== *** STORY [ with acknowledgements to the stories of Alexandre Dumas ]: The scene is a royal palace in Renaissance France. The famous fencer, warrior, and lover d'Artagnan, leader of the Three Musketeers, and now head of the Royal Guard, finds himself in an audience with the King of France. After bowing deeply, he awaits the King's wisdom. "O, most faithful servant and talented guardsman," speaks the King, "We have a strange tale to tell you. As you know, the war against the English has turned out well, the Queen you love is safe, and even the usurper Richelieu is somewhat under control. However, all of these conflicts have been expensive, and thus we are somewhat short of cash. Were it not that our kingdom is safe while our coffers are empty, we would never agree to do what we are about to do. But circumstances being what they are, we must do what we must." "Indeed, sire. But what is it that thou must do?" d'Artagnan replies, although he knows very well what is going on. After all, one does not become the leader of the king's personal guards without knowing everything that happens to the king before he knows it himself! The King resumes: "Now, a very unusual, indeed extremely exotic, gentleman of immense fortune has arrived from some extremely distant land, and he has offered us a tremendous amount of cash - in advance - in exchange for your services in a distant conflict. He calls himself the Count of Monte Cristo, but our spies report that there is no such creature and in fact his origin is unknown. We know that he also answers to "Hegemon". Anyway, this man says that there is a war going on in which those who believe in chivalry, sports, and the glory of competition are being sorely tested by three enemies. He is the leader of the Athletic group. He calls his enemies the "Organizers" (who he says are manipulators like Richelieu), the "Reporters" (who are writers like those who write the gossip that we all suffer from each day), and "Spectators" (who are the proletariat given to brawling at the slightest provocation, or even no provocation at all). His side, the Athletes, needs an excellent leader, gifted at swordsmanship, capable of incredible feats of bravery, and able to escape from even the most narrow and dicey of situations. It appears your reputation has spread further than you ever imagined: He says he needs you, and only you! And we know that your successes here have left you somewhat bored, so we feel that you will be quite excited to go with Hegemon and lead the Athletes to victory, returning at the end of the year with your fame and fortune enhanced beyond your wildest dreams!" d'Artagnan replies: "Sire, this sounds like a delightful adventure. When do I start?" And the King answers: "Immediately! Your new steed is waiting for you in the courtyard. It will also serve as a campfire should you need to cook food..." d'Artagnan, already dressed in his armored uniform, bows deeply and bids farewell to the king. Since he already knew about this mission, his friends have already been notified, and indeed he is still slightly tired from the immense celebration of the night before. He finds his new demon steed in the courtyard, and tells the intelligent, fiery creature one word: "Avant!" Fortunately the steed is quite fast and the air rushing past keeps d'Artagnan cool, even though the demon is quite hot! Time-warp to the end of the 21st century... And thus it is that the famous hoopster Curly and the world-renowned swordsman d'Artagnan find themselves in the Olympic Wars, in Amsterdam, with a demon and an ultralight "Giant Bat" aircraft. Curly hands out the orders from Hegemon along with everyone's lunch. Curly wolfs down three large burgers, d'Artagnan feasts on an immense roast, and the demon snacks on the rest of the cow. A hungry team! Curly hands d'Artagnan a new outfit, looking just like his Renaissance garb, but made of modern ultra-padded ultra-light polypropylene thermal gore-tex spandex high-tech water-resistant self-cleaning deodorant materials, weighing a tenth of d'Artagnan's outfit. Perfect for a guy who has to do a lot of fighting and doesn't want to stop for a bath! d'Artagnan reads his orders, smiles, and takes off aboard the bat to recruit the Devil himself from the Lair of Luther. It turns out to be no trouble at all once he sells the Devil on the idea that the ultimate sporting competition is the ongoing game between the big D. and God himself for the souls of mankind. Once the Devil realizes he is rightfully an Athlete, a competitor, and he sees how much blood and mayhem he can cause while fighting for the Athletes, he shoots off like a creature from Hell to pillage London. (Of course, he *is* a creature from Hell!) Curly, meanwhile, decides to get in some practice of his own, so he drives the lane and heads south from Amsterdam to make a slam dunk in Kay's Crypt. St. George's Dragon is there slumbering. Curly tells the dragon that the dragon's immense treasure hoard, adjusted for inflation, wouldn't even buy a new pair of Air Jordans! Then Curly points out that there's a lot of gold to be found to the south. And he reminds the Dragon that knight-dragon jousting is one of the oldest sports, making even Dragons members of the Athletic community! He explains that the Athletes are counting on the good Dragon to be a part of their team, and tells him that if he'd just get up off his fat, lazy sorry a**, and get his tail moving, the game is waiting for him! This gets the dragon worked up enough that he flies out of Kay's Crypt and pillages both Tokyo *and* Mt. Everest! Not to be outdone, the Demon, fueled by the remnants of the cow, speeds off and captures Olympia. Finally, inspired by all this glorious action, the light cavalry makes a quick trip and takes Sparta. And after this rapid expansion, Hegemon smiles at his map... *** DIPLOMACY: Hegemon pens a letter to Gandalf the Great: > Your proposition suits me. I'd just propose to correct that our treaty > expires two full turns after either Reporters or Spectators is reduced > to 3 cities or less... It will let us time to restructurate our > troops. Already signed. :) (I have no problem agreeing to my own proposals!) We also offer to always leave the WarBOT Temple vacant so that your units may make use of it, if you agree to do the same for our units. What do you say to this addition to our treaty? Meanwhile, let there be peace in the north, and rejoicing throughout the lands for the Organizers and Spectators! Hegemon also pens a brief note to Big Mike of the Spectators: Spectators, despite the combative nature of our heroes and allies and fighting units, we prefer negotiation to battle. Let it be known that, since we go first and can reach them first, we claim the cities of Seoul and Dublin. If you have a diplomatic offer to make, we will listen, although we are honorable warlords and intend to keep our treaty with the Athletes. We do not expect to come to blows with you in the upcoming cycle, so there is still time to negotiate if you would like. And, not to let anyone feel left out, a note to the Reporters: Fair forest folk of Lord Vetinari, we wish you luck in the wars to come. We vow to remain neutral and not interfere in any wars which you may fight, for at least the next 5 turns. Being a troll and none too bright, he fit perfectly into the hero profession: almost indestructible and with the singlemindedness that comes from only being able to hold one thought at a time. Carrot visits van Koughnett Pit and wakes two ancient dragons, sleeping the centuries away. They are delighted at the chance to get out a bit, get a little fresh air and eat a few humans, but after a thorough study of the rules Carrot realises only one is allowed to join him, so he promptly convinces the other to go back to sleep. He promises to send for some takeaway for the dragon left behind. Detritus takes a trip to Zak's Zone, and while demolishing the few parts still standing he stumbles upon a Chariot of Fire, which he keeps since it's so pretty. He offered his services to aid the mighty Spectators in their just cause and was quickly accepted by the people of The Couch. Gimli called out in a booming voice, "Fangorn". On the horizon appeared a mighty dragon that flew swiftly towards them (yes, I know that Fangorn isn't a dragon, but what the hell!). Fangorn landed and quickly took Gimli to Aubert's Crypt where 42 orcs were guarding the mighty prize, TV Rights. Gimli hewed the heads of all 42 orcs and claimed the prize of TV Rights. BigMike hearing the great news of Gimli's joining the Spectators set off for McCuller's Fort and found a demon there willing to join him. The demon set off for C. d'Ampezzo and conquered its citizens eaisly. He then whipped some of the dwarves around the city into shape for the protection of it. To Lord Vetinari of the nobel Eastern forests: That arrangement is perfectly acceptable. I hope that are pact will last for many a turn so that we may concentrate on possible Northern affairs. To Hegemon of the Northern forests: I do not wish a war with you at the moment, Hegemon, however who is to say what may come to pass? Since there is nothing I can do to stop you from taking those two cities since, like you said 'you go first'. I would very much like a treaty with you and await your response for further discussions between our mighty peoples. To Gandalf the Great, fellow brother of the hills: There is no need for haste in making any kind of arragement for the moment for I do not see us coming near each other for many turns. If you have any proposals please let me know. **************************************************************** Gimli son of Gloin appears in The Couch with a Dragon for 1113gp. Heeter" to all players; *** Diplomatic message from Hegemon to the Spectators: The main reason for our claim to the border cities is not so much that we went first, as that we could reach them first. As you will see below, despite moving after the Organizers, we have managed to reach our border territory with them first as well. It now appears that we will also be able to reach Lake Placid on Turn 4, before your own units can. We claim that city as well, and also the Gold in Birnbaum's Crypt. Perhaps this will mean war, but in the absence of any border agreement we feel obligated to take what we can reach first, lest those resources be turned against us by a hostile power. If you agree to let us occupy the city of Sydney on Turn 4 as well, perhaps we can arrange some sort of truce? As we said in our previous message, we prefer negotation to fighting in order to achieve our objectives. And our first objective is a secure border on all sides. *** Diplomatic message from Hegemon to the Wise Gandalf the White: Mighty Organizer, it appears that Lord Vetinari has directed his forces heavily towards yours. For my part, I see an opportunity to occupy a city in Spectator territory before their own units can protect it. Hopefully you can see that similar opportunities await you! This makes it all the more urgent that we settle our own border so that we can rapidly deploy our allies and heroes to the south. My advisors have studied the map and reached some new conclusions which were not in our previous communications. We would like to point out that our devil, demon, and spider can park on the flight-item ruin and claim it this turn according to the first-come, first-served agreement that we made. Also, our demon can easily reach Berlin. We thought it would be wise to advise you that we will be able to claim these two locations, and to suggest that you not waste effort trying to reach unattainable goals. We hope that you recognize the validity of these claims. It would be a vast waste of effort for both of us to continue racing for these two locations. Rather, let us agree that our side has won the race, so that we may both direct our forces southwards and not start an arms race on the border. Because the griffins in Munich are so potent, neither of us can take that city without first assembling a stack, so the race for that city is still wide open. Our sense of fairness tells us that it would be unjust for us to try to take everything on our mutual border. So, if you direct your allies to the south and agree to our claims to the flight item and Berlin, we will not only keep our allies away from the border, but also avoid occupying Munich until at least Turn 5, by which time we believe you can take it anyway. In addition to the griffin build Munich also gives you much closer access to the Temple, so we feel this partly makes up for the flight item which we claim. Let us know if you agree to these proposals. If so, we suggest you immediately send your dragon and archon southwards to be blessed at the temple on their way to fighting Green. We hope that you will leave both allies and your hero out of range of Berlin and the flight item ruin, so that they do not threaten us. For our part, we will use either our devil or demon to occupy Berlin this turn, and then pull both units away from the border so they do not threaten any of your cities. We also suggest that both sides begin vectoring all production away from our mutual border cities. We look forward to watching your upcoming movements! -- Hegemon of the Athletes -- Hegemon of the Athletes ** Robert F. Heeter" to all players; Athletes' Update for A11, Turn 3, Side 2: ============================================================================== *** STORY: As the adrenaline-charged, testosterone-laden warriors of the Athletic squad arise for their third move, a cool, rational mind hovers above the fray, a mighty puppetmaster whose strategic perspective guides the tactics and activities of the individual warriors. We have been introduced to Curly and d'Artagnan, but what is the guiding force of the Athletes? Here is the story of Hegemon: After their rightful victory in the 2096 wars, the Athletes got a bit complacent. Their disastrous defeat at the hands of the Spectators in 2098 sent shockwaves through the Athletic community. The World Athletic Coaches Key Organization (WACKO), the main organizing body for the Athletes' Olympic teams, decided that the Athletes' teamwork needed improvement. After the first Dream Team victory in 2096, the Olympic Wars had become the most popular competition in the Athletic community. As a result, in 2098, too many prima donnas had taken to the field, and although individually the Athletes were mighty, as a whole they failed to coordinate, and the resulting defeat was both emotionally and financially excruciating for all involved! Decisions were decided and plans were planned. Michael Jordan III was retired (again), and new management took over for the Athletes. A strategic partnership was set up with the computer strategy game companies - the musclebound Athletes would admit that "computer sports" were legitimate competitions requiring serious training, and promote them, in exchange for a special new computer system with software that would take overall control over the Athlete's effort and give them the extra edge they would need in 2100. Thus HEGEMON, the Holistic Electronic GEneral / Management-Optimization Nexus, became the new top-secret weapon of the Athletes. Sometimes a bit formal, and occasionally lacking all sense of humor, the system proved its merits in training and now serves as the guiding force for the Athletes. It's prime directive: to negotiate where it can, fight where it must, avoid needless defeats, and achieve the secret objectives for which it was programmed! Thus, to avoid offending any existing Athletes, it chose as its Heroes two mighty Team Captains from earlier ages. They have taken the field and proven their worth in the initial expansion of the Athlete's empire, and other athletes from all over the globe are now flocking to the banner. Where once there was skepticism and fear ("Would this war be as disastrous as the last one?" "How on earth can a damned computer make a good Head Coach?"), there is now a spirit of renewal and a hint of optimism. So it came to pass that d'Artagnan made haste towards the mighty treasures of Irwin's Vault, flying so far that even his ultralight Giant Bat ran out of fuel, and continuing doggedly on foot before taking a break. Curly caught a lift from the second-generation Giant Bat, and then found himself mobbed by the Globetrotters 2100 team, who had costumed themselves as riders of wolves. Together Curly and the Globetrotters visited Harrison's House. Once home to an infamous cheater, it is now a key Reebok research facility, reclusively nestled deep in the forests. After Nike betrayed the Athletes at the Dublin Games and supported the Spectators, it fell to Reebok to take up the lead as the top athletic sponsors. What are they designing in Harrison's House now? In Harrison's House, at the urging of HEGEMON, Curly asks if there are any volunteers with some new technology who might be able to get in costume and join the war for the Athletes. To his surprise (but not Hegemon's), there is no shortage of volunteers! Apparently it's better for Reebok's business if the Athletes do well. Superstars sell more shoes! Two of the Reebok R&D scientists come out dressed as magical wizards, with their feet levitated for flight by the ultra-high-tech "Air Walk" shoes, so new they haven't yet been mass-produced for retail sale. The Reebok Wizards immediately fly off to aid the Athletic cause! Other key Athletes are dispatched to occupy Paris, Berlin and Seoul. d'Artagnan's demon steed sets up shop in Berlin, and to please d'Artagnan, starts a training camp for swordsmen. A swift-moving equestrian team puts on a show in Paris, and as they depart the fashion changes immediately to Archery. (Fashions always have evolved quickly in Paris, you know!) A children's rugby team costumed as dwarves goes on a missionary expedition from Everest to Seoul, and teaches the children there how to get in dwarf costume as well. The HEGEMON parses the new map data, and the front of its console lights up with a bright grin as famous marching music plays through its speakers. Thus far, all is going according to plan! *** DIPLOMACY: To the most benevolent Organizers :) Thanks for accepting our claims to Berlin and the flight item. We have taken Berlin but installed only heavy infantry, which we will soon vector away from the city (right now Seoul is full, but next turn we will have a good vectoring destination at Dublin, near the temple). We will pick up the flight item next turn. As you can see, all of our forces have moved southwards, and we have begun placing demands on the Spectators. > So now I plan to occupy Munich soon which means certainly on Turn 5. > Is it okay for you? With regard to Munich: Yes, by all means, take it on Turn 5. [ By the way - I could have arranged to take it on Turn 4 by building light cavalry or pikemen instead of wolfriders in OIympia and using the allies to escort them out of the forest. But I thought our alliance would work better if I let you have Munich. ] >> We also offer to always leave the WarBOT Temple vacant so that >> your units may make use of it, if you agree to do the same for >> our units. What do you say to this addition to our treaty? > > It suits me perfectly, even if I think you will more benefice of > this than me as I will have probably more accesses to the WarBOT > temple than you... Excellent. I intend to occupy Dublin on Turn 4 and Atlanta on Turn 5, so then we will each have two temple cities, and equal access to the temple area. I hope that is agreeable to you. Now, to the distressingly disagreeable Spectators of the South, who write: >You go to far in claiming much which you cannot take Hegemon. You claim the >mighty city of Sydeny, yet my advisors tell me that you cannot take it before >me. You claim the ruin of Birnbaum's Crypt, yet my advisors tell me that it >is unlikly that you cannot search it before Gimli does. I am insulted by your brashness, however I will wait for a response >from you before I declare war. I think if you look at the map now you will change your mind. At the moment, between our kingdoms lie the cities of Sydney, Garmisch-P, and Lake Placid, and the ruins of Birnbaum's Crypt, Langer's Lair, and Yuri's Cenotaph. It seemed to us quite reasonable and only fair that we should divide up these six sites rather evenly. So we offer to let you explore Langer's Lair and Yuri's Cenotaph, while we explore Birnbaum's Crypt. We offer to let you occupy Garmisch-P. We can certainly reach Lake Placid before you, and our units can then sit calmly atop Birnbaum's Crypt and protect it until our hero arrives to claim the gold. That leaves us with two of the six sites, and you with 3. As for Sydney, that is our current price for maintaining peace. If you would prefer to go to war rather than letting us have Sydney, that is up to you to decide. But one way or another, Hegemon of the Athletes will achieve it's programmed objectives! [ Real-Life note: Mike, Hegemon *is* deliberately being obnoxious. :) But I do seem to have the jump on you, and of course I'm going to push my advantage! However I feel that they were out of my hands so I would like to ask you if I could get them back. I had my turn ready to go on Wednesday afternoon however that entire day AOL would let me sign on but not send any e-mails out. Thursday afternoon I had tennis for two hours after school then immediatly following this I went to my friends house because of Halloween. I was planning to get home and send my gamefile then however some asshole of a kid threw a rock at me which managed to hit me right next to my right eye, splitting it open. I had to go to the emergency room and get nine stiches. Needless to say I totaly forgot about the Warlords game at 9:30 pm when I got back. The next day I sent out the gamefile before the game should have taken my second time out away from me, however I checked back at about 11:30 that night and found that the remailer hadn't gotten it in time, thus it took a second timeout away from me. To sum everything up for all of you, I feel that the circumstances were out of my control and thus should get back my time outs. Please e-mail me with your feelings on the matter. _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ The following message was sent on Monday November 03, 1997 at 02:49 PM EST by "Robert F. Heeter" to all players; Athletes' Update for A11, Turn 5, Side 2: ============================================================================== *** DIPLOMACY: To Gandalf the Slightly Confused: You write: > Yes, our borders are now settled. There is only one minor change > comming from my last turn. It will me who will finally get Atlanta. > Indeed we didn't decide anything concerning this city and my Archon > will prevent your great Demon to reach this city already this turn... > I think it's in no cases disloyal and I'm sure you have to agree > with me. > > Anyway I'm always ready if Atlanta is really necessary for your plans > not to occupy it and in exchange taking Berlin or the flight item. So > let me know your proposition(s)... Let us get the story clear: First, you certainly agreed to let me have Atlanta. In your report from Turn 4, you wrote: > >Excellent. I intend to occupy Dublin on Turn 4 and Atlanta on Turn 5, > >so then we will each have two temple cities, and equal access to the > >temple area. I hope that is agreeable to you. > > Great to hear that you agree... You will see that I'm already in ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ > Moscow! and my Archon near of Olympia... This is a clear statement that you agreed to what I wrote. Certainly if you did not agree to let me have Atlanta, you should have said something about it last turn. Second, we never agreed that there would be a first-come, first-served race to Atlanta. If you read the agreements we made, they only applied to Berlin, the flight item, and Munich. You have no grounds for requesting either the flight item or Berlin in exchange for Atlanta. Third, if you wanted Atlanta, since you knew that I had already made a fair claim to it, it would have been much nicer for you to give me advance notice of your intentions, in your Turn 4 report. You did not do this, and I consider that very unfriendly. When I was about to reach the flight item first, I gave you some significant help by pointing out in advance that I was going to win the race, and let you adjust your plans so that you did not waste time going for it. We think you should have given us equal consideration with your plan for keeping us out of Atlanta. Fourth, it is especially unfortunate that you wish to deprive the Athletes of their right to equal access to the temple. The Athletes are also distressed that you have interfered with our plans to send our Demon south to attack Blue, and interfered with our plans for vectoring units to receive blessings. Finally, your archon is not really blocking my demon from taking Atlanta. A blessed demon can kill a blessed archon. :) All of this information is digested by HEGEMON, the Holistic Electronic GEneral / Management-Optimization Nexus. HEGEMON considers the options: (1) Do nothing, demand that the archon not take Atlanta, and wait. * Analysis: This is a weak response to a clear provocation. There is no guarantee that White will accept. If we do nothing, we will be negotiating from a weak position, which is not advisable. (2) Allow the White Archon to take Atlanta. But to allow us fair access to the Temple, occupy Munich instead. The city is undefended and no units are being vectored to it, so this does not disrupt White's plans much - even less than his move disrupted ours. * Analysis: A viable alternative. We will not be toyed with, we will not meekly give up cities, and yet we do not consider this a situation over which we would be willing to go to war. (3) Kill the white archon with our demon, and take Atlanta anyway. We said we would take Atlanta on Turn 5, and if White wants to get in the way, that's his problem! We said what we would do, White agreed to it, and Gandalf should not try to take advantage of our non-aggression treaty to gain an unfair level of control over the temple. * Analysis: A viable alternative. We have been provoked, and a swift, firm response may be needed. White will be very angry, however, and may use this as grounds for declaring war. But he has no units that can threaten us this turn. However, if we choose to do this, we will be the first to shed blood. And neither side wants to get into a second war while we are both busy with our current north-south struggles. The decision is made: Option (1) is too weak, and no self-respecting Warlord would dishonor himself by meekly conceding such a valuable city. Those who have studied the actions of Hegemon in past games know that he neither makes idle claims, nor sits idly by when his legitimate claims are ignored. Option (3) is too strong, and no honorable Warlord would shed the blood of a truce-partner, even when provoked, so long as a reasonable alternative existed. Also, White made no other hostile moves, so clearly he is not trying to start a war, and neither are we. So Option (2) is chosen. To Gandalf the Brave: A very clever move! We do not wish to get into a war with you over Atlanta. Although we could defeat your archon and take the city, we do not want to escalate the dishonor of the situation, and we do not wish for our nations to get into a war. We will let you have that most important city. However, since you have, ahem, "renegotiated" our agreement and denied our fair proposal to take Atlanta while you take Munich, we have given you equal treatment, and occupied Munich. We think this is fair; we both control cities with easy access to the temple now. If you do not think that this is the fairest solution, we are happy to discuss the matter, since no permanent damage has been done. But we think agreements are made to be kept, and we think honorable Warlords always explain themselves to their alliance partners when they do not agree with a proposal made by their partner. We might have agreed to let you keep Atlanta if you had been courageous and asked sometime before you moved. There was plenty of time to discuss the situation. In the meantime, we congratulate you on your defeat of the Green dragon! It was a most impressive and unexpected victory. (We hope you are right that Green will not choose to kill your hero + ghost with his hero + archon, or alternatively send his archon alone to eliminate your hero... Would he mind if you collected the items, if his surviving archon cancelled all of them and could simply negate your remaining hero anyway? An interesting puzzle! But right now you have 4 flying allies to his 1, and he will need to even the score somehow...) We are looking forward to the next moves in this adventure! * To Lord Vetinari of the Reporters: It was with great sorrow that we watched the renaming of your cities. [ Seriously - sorry we had to make that rule. We're working on fixing it for the next round! ] And, having lost many of its own allies in game simulations, HEGEMON knows how difficult it is to lose such a valuable ally as your dragon. Despite the hostile actions of our White ally towards your kingdom, remember that we, *Orange*, are not your enemy. Indeed, since we have agreed to let White occupy Atlanta, the Orange and Green kingdoms do not even come into contact, and if your forces wish to visit the temple, we will leave it open for them just as we will for White's units, since we remain neutral. * To BigMike of the Spectators: You have managed to claim the +2 command item, but I think you'll find that it comes at a heavy price... [ After the war is over, I'll be happy to explain to you any weaknesses I found in your Warlording, so that you will be stronger next time! It is the least I can do in exchange for pounding on you this game... :) ] *** ATHLETIC EVENTS for Turn 5: A wizard and a dwarf do some power lifting in Garmisch-P, winning their main event against a blue Giant Worm. I haven't been so busy in years... ] Athletes' Update for A11, Turn 7, Side 2: ============================================================================== *** STORY: Hegemon's circuits were overloaded with other processes this turn, and there was not much action, so there is no story. The armies of the Athletes secure their existing positions and advance towards the Spectators, who can be found cowering in their impoverished, rat-infested hovels. :) *** DIPLOMACY: * To Gandalf the Great: That was an excellent move against Green! We weren't expecting their hero to die so easily! We congratulate you on a skillful maneuver. It looks like you will get away with the assassination without even losing an ally - something we were not able to do! :) Since your forces are all busy in the west and we already began vectoring units to Munich, we do not feel that giving you Munich would really benefit either of us at this time. Of course we are still leaving the temple free for you to visit. We are most interested to see what new developments occur in the western war zone! Will Barcelona, Chamonix, or Beijing fall next? Will the guerrilla ghost manage to raze the CNN Office? Enquiring minds want to know... :) * To Vetinari of the somewhat green Reporters: Please accept our condolences on the loss of your hero! Since you appear to be somewhat the worse for wear from your encounters with Gandalf's experienced forces, perhaps a bit of friendly advice will be welcome? You might be able to bring down the White hero with your own hero and bats, but since White has far more gold than you do, he will very quickly get a new hero (Turn 9) with an ally, and retrieve all the items. You can't beat him at that game. But if you send your Elemental from Barcelona south down the western outer ring road, and go around the white ghost, you can protect your capital against the marauding ghost. (The movement tool gives a bogus answer and tries to send the elemental a different way; you can't trust it for long moves!) Your other western units can be repositioned to protect Squaw Valley and St. Moritz. To defend Nagano against the white demon you'll need to bring back your eastern elemental and the nearby bat, and fortify the city with 2 new builds so it's defense 2. It looks like Sarajevo and Innsbruck are safe for this turn, but you might wish to turn off your vectoring and build up some defenses! The +3 hero and the +2 city should help, especially if you bring up the devil and cancel the White hero. If you return your wolfrider northwest of Oslo back to Oslo, you can protect that city long enough for it to build a griffin. So although you might lose a front-line city, it looks like your rear can just barely be defended, at least for one more turn. In the long term you may not be able to defend everything, of course, and in that case we would like to occupy the city of Oslo. (We assume that after all the damage they have done to your armies, you would prefer to see Orange armies there than White ones. :) ) * To Big Mike of the feeling-blue Spectators Cheer up! I couldn't find any mistakes to take advantage of this turn. :) (Actually I almost forgot that your hero has the other flight item, and I nearly sent my dragon and dwarves into the hills west of your hero, where I thought the spiders couldn't roam, but they would have all died since your flying hero can carry them around. Fortunately that's one mistake I didn't make. :) ) With all your units strongly fortified in their cities, I think you have many turns of life left in your kingdom now... *** SUMMARY of Activities: Gold at Start of Turn: 739 Curly retrieves the Cyan Standard (com +1) and Anton Geesink's Belt (com +2) from the pile left by the blue hero in Sydney. Heeter" to all players; Athletes' Update for A11, Turn 8, Side 2: ============================================================================== *** STORY: Curly ambles down the southeastern outer ring road, thinking that it's very strange - he's been in this war for 7 turns, and hasn't seen any real action! He decides it's time to organize a pickup game and get in some practice. As he heads south, he comes across a pair of swift equestrians, and he has an inspiration: Horse Hoops! They've got wheelchair basketball and blind basketball, so why not hoops aboard horses? Sort of like polo... The light cav jump at the chance, and after a quick practice to build up some team spirit, they head south in search of competition. Meanwhile, in The Couch, the garrison is getting bored. They haven't moved in years, much less fought, and they're getting keen to do something. So it was natural that when Curly and the 2 light cav showed up outside the gates, offering a high-stakes game, they were intrigued. A middle-aged bald-headed guy and a couple of dudes on horses against three muscular dwarves and a ten-foot tall Giant with the home-court advantage: what could be more interesting? Since none of the globetrotting Orange Athletes was much over 6 feet, and their Giant could take one step from the three-point line and make a dunk without even jumping, the Spectators figured they had it made. But they didn't figure that the Athletes would actually play the game *on* their horses, and those big equines were nearly as fast as the Giant, and the poor big guy was so awkward that once he started running for the basket, he just couldn't stop. He fouled out in the first quarter for charging. Then it was all Curly, who was taller, faster, and a better shot than any of the dwarves. The Athletes took it easy in the second half because they didn't want to look like they were running up the score. In the fourth quarter the light cav were even sent off the court, but it didn't help. A bunch of disorganized Spectators are just no match for an Orange hero when he's on his game. Meanwhile, seeing what was happening in The Couch, an Orange wizard flew over to Calgary and made a side bet with the other Giant there. With great pride in the might of his brother in The Couch, the giant in Calgary took the wizard up on the offer. So once the home team lost in the Couch, the bet was lost in Calgary too. The Wizard decided that the giants in Calgary needed to be cut from the team in the future. Elsewhere, d'Artagnan stops in at Birnbaum's Crypt, Elam's famous restaurant, but gets a bad case of food poisoning. Apparently they had been expecting visitors earlier and had tried to leave the stuff under the heatlamps too long. Birnbaum gives him 2496 to keep quiet about the affair. *** DIPLOMACY: To Gandalf of the White Organizers: > We understand you totally about Munich considering these motives. > However we still ask for one city and we would be happy to get either > Berlin, London, or any other city that suits you. Perhaps you could come up with a specific proposal that's to our mutual advantage? For instance, at the moment we have no intention of taking the Green city of Oslo, since our forces are all needed to attack the Blue hero stack, but if we were given some incentives by you, there might be possibilities... It would help you to have Oslo as a forward base, and the elimination of the Green Griffin production would help you too. But there has to be something in this for the Athletes. And of course Vetinari might offer me a better deal if I did *not* to take the city... > >We are most interested to see what new developments occur in > >the western war zone! Will Barcelona, Chamonix, or Beijing fall > >next? Will the guerrilla ghost manage to raze the CNN Office? > >Enquiring minds want to know... > > You won't be able to see much action this turn, but be sure we will > let Reporters think a lot about their next move (again, sorry). No kidding! Green may need some painkillers; he's got a big headache now! > >Please accept our condolences on the loss of your hero! > >Since you appear to be somewhat the worse for wear from your > >encounters with Gandalf's experienced forces, perhaps a bit of > >friendly advice will be welcome? > >We strongly disagree here because we think that in the Tournament spirit >each player should play alone without any help or suggestion. Anyway we >accepted that, but know that it was nearly a break of our northern alliance. >Indeed did you already see in any conflicts an ally who will help his >friend's enemy... It's very uncommon, no? Technically I thought we only had a nonaggression treaty, meaning that I'm not going to attack you but I'm not committed to helping you either. If you want me to actively help you, of course we can negotiate that. :) I've tried to be neutral in the White/Green war, although I guess I got a little carried away and gave out a bunch of ideas last turn, which maybe wasn't very wise. Anyway, I wasn't out to offend anyone, I just thought it was an interesting situation and wanted to keep the game a little more interesting for everyone. I know from experience that it's hard to stay motivated when you're playing defense and the enemy has found a clever way to outmaneuver you. Also, it's to Orange's advantage to teach the other players in this game as much as we can so that they do better in future games; it will raise our "Opponent Quality" scoring factor if our opponents in this game do well in their other games. However, I won't give out advice this turn, until I hear what you think... To Lord Vetinari of the Green Reporters, and BigMike of the Spectators: Have hope... Even in the darkest hour, the enemy might make a mistake. If you give up, then all is lost, but if you hold out as long as possible, all things are possible. And the more experience you get watching your opponents here, the more tricks and ideas you will pick up for future battles. [ e.g., In a past game I was getting wiped off the map, but I found a way to kill both the heroes and all the allies of one of my two enemies, and when the final numbers were counted, I hadn't a unit to my name, but I'd killed more enemy units, allies, and heroes than I'd lost, and I left feeling proud of what I'd done, rather than miserable that I'd gotten killed off. I found it helped to defend a few key cities well and to raze cities that I could no longer defend or produce in, rather than let the enemy use them as bases, provided I didn't expose valuable units in the process. I also tried not to lose units needlessly when they couldn't kill off a comparable number of enemy units; BigMike made a mistake last turn in leaving two of his cities exposed to attack; had he retreated from The Couch to Calgary and Sapporo, he'd have one more city this turn, and 6 more units next turn than he has now. Vetinari now faces the same sort of situation... ] *** SUMMARY: Starting Gold: 245 Curly and 2 light cav capture The Couch, pillaging 76.
