He put his name into the lottery drawing and thought there was no chance in h*ll that he would be selected. "Bill Gates said you are the lucky one to represent the Spectators!" she screamed. Junior, thinking that he could be rich for life, immediately packed and headed to the airport with his ticket in hand. "Hmmmm ... Medieval Fantasy," he thought, "I've always sucked at that when I was gaming during college." The plane flight seemed short, and Junior was quickly dressed and trained in the new Olympic game rules. He seemed extremely brutal during practice, sensing the millions he could earn if he were to become victorious. As the time approached for the games to begin, he lost contact with his wife and friend, incensed with winning the grand prize. The games have begun! Junior, unsure of what to do, patiently awaits his turn as he watches those around him make their first move. He waits ... and waits ... then grabs a beer from the refrigerator before entering his castle for his first move. "The time has come for you to begin," is the message Junior receives. He immediately executes the lone scout assigned to him at the beginning of the games. "Who was the idiot that gave me this lame excuse of an army to guard my main castle," he thinks. He marches alone and heads to the Sapporo castle. It's occupants are quickly executed as well, and Junior sets up a new camp. He begins the quest of training his new armies to prepare for battle. "I need you to be fast and swift," he tells his troops. They have troubles staying on their fast horses, but soon it all begins to fall in place. Junior is confident they will be ready for battle in the coming turns. He quietly retreats to the safety of his new home, and dreams of the millions to come ... ------------------------------------------------------------------------ John Rabasa Apple Computer, Inc. Such a relationship would be quite mutually beneficial..... the question now is, what does one look for in an ally? For me, the answer would be a capable warlord, who will hold up their own in battle, but also recognize how to structure conditions of an alliance so that the alliance would continue not merely on one's word and honor, but also on the understanding that breaking such an alliance would be ultimately harmful to the oathbreaker. After all, all of us are playing for the ultimate win, and promises and alliances are bound to be broken in favor of the number one goal. Thus, the only strong alliance would be one that would further that goal for both. I think that achieving a 50/50 split of this world is probably a high enough score to advance to the next level in this Tournament. Analyzing the board, I find it hard to believe that a single player alone will be able to achieve a higher than 50% score on their own, allied with no-one. Thus, I am proposing an alliance to each of you, and based each of your responses, will decide with who to ally. I will then inform all of my decision, so that my position in this game is absolutely clear to all. An alliance would either use the Berlin-Munich North-South line as a divider or the Dublin-Seoul East-West line. Such an alliance would clearly disallow one from crossing that line into the ally's territory for any reason. The manner of division of the cities that sit right on that line will be determined by the specific treaty conditions of each of your alliance proposals. Forces on the allied border should be of the slower city-defence types only, so as not to pose an attack threat for the friendly neighbor. A final condition that I feel is reasonable in the alliance, is that such an alliance terminates when one has reduced the enemy on your border to fewer than five cities. I am respectfully awaiting the answer from each of you before making any final decision. --- Sun Tzu [Following is an excerpt from Chapter 1 of Sun Tzu's "Art of War"] The art of war is of vital importance to the State. It is a matter of life and death, a road either to safety or to ruin. Hence it is a subject of inquiry which can on no account be neglected. The art of war, then, is governed by five constant factors, to be taken into account in one's deliberations, when seeking to determine the conditions obtaining in the field. These are: (1) The Moral Law; (2) Heaven; (3) Earth; (4) The Commander; (5) Method and discipline. The MORAL LAW causes the people to be in complete accord with their ruler, so that they will follow him regardless of their lives, undismayed by any danger. HEAVEN signifies night and day, cold and heat, times and seasons. EARTH comprises distances, great and small; danger and security; open ground and narrow passes; the chances of life and death. The COMMANDER stands for the virtues of wisdom, sincerely, benevolence, courage and strictness. By METHOD AND DISCIPLINE are to be understood the marshaling of the army in its proper subdivisions, the graduations of rank among the officers, the maintenance of roads by which supplies may reach the army, and the control of military expenditure. These five heads should be familiar to every general: he who knows them will be victorious; he who knows them not will fail. _______________________________________________________________________________ __________ __________/ \__________ <__________ Turn 2 __________> \__________/ _______________________________________________________________________________ =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Tournament Game: "A05" Turn Number: 2 Gamefile Sent To: Sun Tzu (Orange) (kchang@u.washington.edu) Date Sent: Tuesday October 14, 1997 at 11:52 AM EDT Date Gamefile Due: Thursday October 16, 1997 at 11:52 AM EDT (In GMT-0800: Thursday October 16, 1997 at 7:52 AM) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- A message from Wolfgang (White) dated Tuesday October 14, 1997 at 11:52 AM EDT; Taurus and his assassin Devil arrives in Stockholm and greets his brother with a slap on the back..."Come Wolfgang, we have much planning to do, but first let's celebrate our reunion, it cost me 1174 gp to get here!" Powerful enemies are approaching from the south, with tales of Elementals, Giant Worms, Archons and Demons rapidly approaching. Wolfgang has no intentions of migrating west to invade the Orange nation but fears a bloody war is about to break out between the two mighty nations over ownership of Bob Heeters bar. Wolfgang realizes that he is outmatched in the race to the ruin, but reinforcements are swiftly arriving, and the fight will be immensely costly to both sides, possibly with the advantage to the Organizers. If war breaks out over the ruin, Wolfgang will throw all his forces towards the east...in a long and costly battle. Being a man of principal is a dangerous thing, and he hopes that it will be unnecessary. If left alone, Wolfgang will leave the natural border uncrossed and the Athletes can continue their games to the south, with much easier pickings. Thus, your lack of communication has resulted in what I feared... "irreconciliable misunderstandings". You should have realized that no matter what you did, I would take Bob Heeter's Bar. After all, my turn 1 move indicated clearly that I was completely sacrificing expansion, giving up my right to securing a southern boundary at Seoul and Dublin, in order to obtain the flight item. There was no way I would not obtain my objective after making such dear sacrifices, your threat of "all out war" notwithstanding. Now we have both lost our 2 most powerful ally troops in this "misunderstanding". Your actions frankly confuse me. My offer of friendship virtually guaranteed you a great score for this round. You are not competing against me, you are competing against the other White players playing this round. If you would like to persist in "all out war", please take note of my builds this turn. I am ready and set to take you on. You will not win this war. My analysis of the next 5 turns has proven this to me. Let me propose an alternative... With both of us in such weakened conditions, we really need now to help each other. I would really welcome an alliance with you even after this "misunderstanding". Please reconsider your actions. However, if you must persist in beating yourself senseless against a very very solid wall, I am prepared to provide one for you. What have you been doing?" Senior laughs. "I was walking in the hills and came across this old building. Wouldn't you know it, but a couple of these beefed up Worms were working out in a place called Yuri Cenotaph's gym. I just started up a conversation with them, and they got all excited about the possibility of helping you out!" Junior thinks his father is getting senile. What on earth could the Giant Worms do for him in helping him win his free tickets? Then he notices that these Worms have a way of motivating troops to fight beyond their natural abilities. "That Dad, he's so smart," thinks Junior. Junior's messengers return, only with sad news. No word from Lord Wolfgang, and MJ/Scottie seem to want to stay where they are. The saddest of all news was that Madame Dana has sent her troops into Blue territory, getting ready to strike at Rio. Junior now knows what this is about, greed! "Those stinkin' Reporters," Junior says to himself, "there they go again *starting* something that they shouldn't." He's not sure what to do, but he can't help but be upset with the whole thing. "WE MUST PREPARE FOR BATTLE!" is the message sent to his troops. Short, brief, but to the point. He once again dispatches his messengers out, but this time they are only sent to 2 countries: TO WHITE: "Lord Wolfgang, I have yet to hear back from you. Madame Dana (Green) has already entered my country and is getting ready to strike. Can we strike up a deal now to get some assistance from you in return for other favors?" TO ORANGE: "MJ, it seems to be getting tense. I've noticed that you are concentrating on Lord Wolfgang. I have honored our peace another turn. What you do next will have a profound effect on our relationship!" Junior is tired. He seems to have gained no friends and is being squeezed on both sides. "I really want those tickets, but I sure don't want to die for them!" he says. Junior camps out and retires for the evening. "MJ, it seems to be getting tense. I've noticed that you are concentrating on Lord Wolfgang. I have honored our peace another turn. What you do next will have a profound effect on our relationship!" Junior is tired. He seems to have gained no friends and is being squeezed on both sides. Your assessment is correct that I am concentrating on Lord Wolfgang. From the beginning of the game, Wolfgang has shown nothing but ill-will towards me. He has been completely unresponsive to any of my inquiries and his sole communication with me has been to threaten me in an attempt to prevent me from achieving an artifact that was rightfully mine. I must assume from his vectoring of all forces towards his hero in the North that he is planning a protracted campaign against me. Luckily, I have planned very well to sustain a superior counter- offensive against him, which I plan to win. Thus, I hope we can honor our peace much much longer than just "another turn". I propose an alliance between our two mighty countries. Such an alliance frees you to concentrate fully on Green, who in my humble assessment of your game skills demonstrated so far, should be no match for you. You will not be "squeezed" anymore with me as your ally. I will be keeping an absolute minimum of forces in Tokyo and Mt Everest and will promise to leave Seoul and Dublin completely unmolested. [I'm assuming that you are taking Dublin with your Giant Worm on Turn 4 instead of using it and your Demon to attack Mt Everest] I would only ask that you keep just enough forces in those cities to defend them and also to honor those two cities as the boundary between our two countries. Indeed, the fewer forces you keep in Dublin and Seoul, the fewer forces I need to keep in Tokyo and Mt Everest, and the more forces BOTH of us will have to concentrate on our enemies. Please respond to me BEFORE I do my Turn 4, since it greatly affects how I will distribute my forces during that turn. You are allowed one extra diplomatic message beyond your turn report each turn and I believe you have not used your Turn 3 diplomacy yet. I will be awaiting your response with great attention. --- Sun Tzu _______________________________________________________________________________ The following message was sent on Thursday October 30, 1997 at 03:20 AM EST by svankoug@direct.ca (Steve VanKoughnett) to all players; Wolfgang has received word of a powerful blue nation to the southwest. It could easily wipe out the Athletes southern cities, but Wolfgang has heard rumors of an alliance between the two. Why would the Spectators form an alliance with someone that they have an incredible advantage over? While Wolfgang battles with the Heros of the orange nation to the north, The Spectators could pick and choose in the South, ... possibly even saving the wizards of Harrisons House or the command item at Panagos Tomb for themselves. The Athletes Hero would dare not approach a stack led by Worms and Demons! Wolfgang sends a message to Junior and Senior of the Spectator Nation: Join me in this war against the evil Athletes, and more vile, the Reporters, and I shall not attack a blue city as long as orange and green exist! Being on opposing corners of this battlefield makes us natural allies, as it is most difficult for us to wage war across the center mountains anyways. I hope that we can take advantage of this opportunity. Please send word of your intentions, time is of the essence. Wolfgang joins his flying allies and prepares for war in the north. St Louis is liberated by an Orcish Mob and looted for 75 gold. Spiders are built there. In the south, wolfriders take the neutral city of Barcelona. A Demon takes the city of Melbourne and continues to the east in preparation for war. Mighty Unicorns will soon be on their way to the eastern forests.... Senior immediately dispatches another messenger to his son with the following note: "Son, choose wisely, but do not choose quickly. War is a long, drawn out battle, not a quick one!" With that, Junior has optioned to wait until his turn before deciding. The battle has just begun in the north, and neither side threatens to touch the Spectators territory during this round. "I cannot dispatch another messenger as my troops must rest before the southern battles begin. I will promise a decision with my next turn report." I have decided very early on in this game that the best I can hope for is to play for #2 and try to do better than this in other rounds. Why? Because I have been cursed with having two strong players as my neighbors while you and Wolfgang are bordered by an inferior player. What leads me to that conclusion? 1. The slowness of Green's expansion. 2. Green has not even disbanded his scout yet ! 3. Green chose an inferior ally to go with his second hero. 4. Green was positioned perfectly in Turn 3 to free BOTH the Dragon in Van Koughnett Pit AND the 2 Elementals in the Barrow of Bruce and really put the squeeze on Wolfgang. Instead he inexplicably moves his Hero past the Dragon WITHOUT exploring the ruin. Thus not only does he not gain all three allies in one turn, he doesn't even get one !!! Due to his inferior play, Wolfgang even has aspirations of trying to steal some extra allies, exemplified by his ghost parked on the Barrow of Bruce. Clearly, Green is going to be crushed easily by both you and Wolfgang, though, I suspect it will be easier for Wolfgang, since you've got that flying hero to deal with. Why then am I the better ally? Because if you stay neutral with me, I can basically fight Wolfgang to a stalemate (ultimately I think I will win after a prolonged campaign).. Meanwhile, you can quickly control the entire southern half of the board and also consolidate your control over the center part as well. You will win the game with well above 50% of the board. What if you ally with Wolfgang? It's obvious that I will have to divide my forces defending myself from a squeeze and eventually will lose due to the overwhelming numbers against me. However, this basically places Wolfgang in a better position than you. By forcing me to use my dragon and wizards against you, you will be weakening yourself. Eventually both I and Green will be wiped out and you will be facing a White nation that is stronger than you. You will then be hard-pressed to end up with 50% of the board. Notice that I have already moved my Dragon away from you. When my wizards are freed next turn, they will be moving away from you as well. Would you rather have an ally that basically has no hope of competing with you or an ally that will become stronger than you? If I am your ally, the White and Orange nations will be embroiled in a stalemate battle while you are mopping up down South. If you ally with Wolfgang, the two of you will eventually face each other relatively even-matched. I'm just playing to survive in a bad situation, while Wolfgang has aspirations of winning the whole thing.... I think that you will end up with a higher tournament score this round with me as your ally. --- Sun Tzu _______________________________________________________________________________ The following message was sent on Saturday November 01, 1997 at 05:55 AM EST by Isaac Hellstr=?iso-8859-1?Q?=F6?=m to all players; Turn Report Template Game A05 Turn 04 Side 03 Gold At Start Of Turn : 601 Attacks Neutral Nagano - wins - pillage 175 gp - Starts Producing Wolfrider - 450 gp. Inexplicable to me because all she had to do was fly over an airspace to avoid her own demise. Anyways, I would like to repeat my offer of an alliance to you. If you ally with me, I promise that I will do everything in my power to keep both of White's heroes occupied so that you are free to take the Devil, Battle Item, and Dragon left in Green's territory. I will do everything possible to ensure that you end up with 80% of the board. Why? Because (again inexplicably to me) White has declared all-out war against me, despite my attempts to be just left alone. For me right now it's a choice of helping you completely dominate this game and retaining the remaining 20% versus being eliminated out of the game with a score of 0%. If you indicate to me any desires of a friendship, I'll begin demonstrating my ernestnest towards helping you by moving ALL of my forces against white and away from you. If any spider is left in Mt Everest (for defence), it will have all of its movement points used up and start in the NW position so it cannot reach Seoul (spider needs the full 18 mvmt points to reach Seoul in one turn from the NW position). I will empty Mt Everest completely if Seoul is also vacated or contains only forces that don't have enough movement points to reach Mt Everest in one turn. It's a race between you and White right now to see who can capitalize on Green the fastest. I'm proposing to help you in this race. I hope you agree with my plan to help you win this game by an overwhelming landslide. Given the bleak conditions I find myself faced against, this is the only route I can see that will keep me alive until Turn 20. --- Sun Tzu _______________________________________________________________________________ The following message was sent on Sunday November 02, 1997 at 11:46 AM EST by svankoug@direct.ca (Steve VanKoughnett) to all players; A message from Wolfgang to the leader of the Spectators, As the Athletes frantically try and make an alliance with you, I will reiterate my offer to you. It is also true that Taurus will be searching the southeast ruins in the next two turns, while Wolfgang holds the Athletes off to the Northwest. If you ally with me and help wipe out the other Reporter Hero and the rest of the Athletes, I will leave you the ruin of your choice, and will form the city boundaries where you wish. Those Reporters have been known to be careless, but this takes the cake! Junior thinks that the reporters pen must've run out of ink. They have always been fierce, but this was too easy! To celebrate, Junior heads to Birnbaum's Crypt, where he hears that good things happen to those that wait. He arrives and finds a plaque at the side of the door. There were rumors of the city of Oslo falling, and even more rumors that a lone Reporter wolfrider was slain near Rio. Can it get any better? Did Junior make his decision about an ally? Well, did he? Junior has chosen his new ally: THE ATHLETES! He immediately dispatches a messenger to MJ. You will notice that neither army would be in a position to capture your city in the coming turn. We will do all that we can to assist you in your battle with the Organizers. More of those details are soon forthcoming, as we must prepare to invade the territory of the Reporters. Good luck to you, my friend, we can defeat this land together, and can both profit from it! Grim news indeed. Wolfgang regrets being unclear of his intentions with the Spectators, but he has never been much good with diplomacy and would rather die on the battlefield than lick the boots of his enemies. Wolfgang sends a message to the leader of the Reporters: Things are not looking well in your campaign and I am willing to make you an offer of an alliance if you will work with me in the war. I will grant you the city of Beijing and lands around it. With the Spectator allies approaching rapidly from the southeast you stand no chance of stopping them. Your only chance of surviving this game to the end with at least one city is to strike a deal with me. At the same time, you will concentrate enough power in one area to put a real thorn in the side of the approaching Spectators. This way you can still enjoy glorious battles to the east and not have to worry about defending your rear. This will allow me to concentrate my forces, and build enough strength to possibly repel this invasion, and we can both finish this game. Please read the conditions below and follow them carefully, if you decide to try and go it alone, then I shall meet you on the battlefield, and we shall both probably perish, you first, and then probably me... conditions; 1. Have all wolfriders in south form mighty stacks on the road, in the forests, near Innsbruck. Your wolfriders will enjoy a bonus of +2 there and will fight with strength 6! Hopefully this will slow the approaching Spectators. 2. Have ALL other armies retreat to Beijing. I will leave you with this city and any Spectator cities that you can take to the east. Leave all western cities empty for Taurus to take for himself. 3. Hero searches stronghold. You will need this money to build griffins in Atlantic city, and to continue paying for armies as the game goes on. Your expenses will be much greater than your income with only one city. Have Hero move to the forests near Atlanta. Any armies within reach of Hero, join Hero. Let me know of your reply, this is the best way for you to finish the game with at least one city. I hope you accept. Wolfgang Wolfgang goes on to kill the orange light cavalry in the ruins of Berlin. He then plants his flag to await reinforcements and the reply from the Reporters. Taurus searches a ruin and receives the Neptunes Triad(C+2). Wolfrider takes the city of Chamonix and loots 18 gp and pillages 100gp. As a token of good faith between the Organizers and the Reporters, the wolfrider does not kill the dwarf on the road in the forest near Chamonix. TO DANA (GREEN) My condolences on the eminent demise of your hapless nation. Wolfgang has made some suggestions (demands) on you and I would like to comment on some of them. First, his idea of you selecting one city to concentrate all your forces in a "turtle defense" is a good suggestion for you... it may even allow you to last all the way through to Turn 20. His suggestion of Beijing is also a good choice, since it is in a nice strategic location that won't relegate you to a corner of the world that absolutely nothing is happening in. Using your wolfriders to slow Blue down is not going to be very helpful to you. You would be much better off sending them over to Beijing to help reinforce it, rather than uselessly wasting them. Wolfgang also failed to remind you to free the Dragon ally in Van Koughnett Pit with your hero. Perhaps he did not remind you because he wants that valuable ally for himself? That ally is going to be an ESSENTIAL defender of your city of Beijing since it cancels all special bonuses. Make sure you stack enough forces with your hero when you get the Dragon to prevent Wolfgang from assassinating him. If you lose both your heroes you will really be dead meat. DON'T get the gold in the stronghold this turn, if you do so, you'll LOSE the race to the Dragon, and YOU REALLY NEED THAT DRAGON IN ORDER TO SURVIVE IN THIS GAME !!! Searching the stronghold later is a good idea, since you will be needing the gold, however, you'll be free to do it after you get the dragon. If Wolfgang somehow manages to get to the Lair of Leung before you, you always have Max's Manor.... You only need the gold from one stronghold since you're only going to have one city to spend it on. Building a griffin in Beijing is a bad idea. Spiders are cheaper and better defenders. 2 spiders are better than 1 griffin. You will also need to build another army in Beijing in order to get it to defence 2. If you take these measures, I think you'll be able to survive until the end of the game, because with your hero and dragon in a defence 2 city, nobody will want to waste their forces taking it down. TO JUNIOR (BLUE) I am ecstatic about this new era of cooperation between our two nations. I was unable to completely empty Mt Everest this turn because you did not use up all of the movement of the spider in the SE corner of Seoul. Thus, this spider plus the newly-produced wolfrider can reach Mt Everest. I would like to empty out Mt Everest next turn. Since I used up the movement of my spider this turn, next turn neither it nor the new spider can reach Seoul, thus you only need to leave one spider behind as a defender. If you use up all of its movement (down to zero), next turn it cannot reach Mt Everest. You'll also have to vector newly-produced wolfriders away to some city on your front. If you do this, I'll be able to move all of my troops out and vector spider production in Mt Everest to somewhere on my front. Both of my wizards are heading due west to engage the Organizers, the northern as the leader of my northern offensive, and the southern one to help repulse Wolfgang's vanguard hero attack group. MJ has skillfully positioned himself to prevent Wolfgang from doing any of three possible things, take and hold either Olympia or Rome, or from trying to steal the gold in Ivan's Palisade and escape without dying. This leaves him with only one thing to do, which is to take Munich. I predict that on Turn 6, all of White's forces will be consolidated around and in Munich, which actually gives him (hopefully only temporary) control over the central portion of the board. I'm actually quite surprised that you did not take Dublin last turn, since you could have done so with your Giant Worm without losses (did you remember that neutral cities have only defence 0 so therefore your worm's 9 beats the griffin's 8). You are going to have to bring a lot of your big gun allies (especially your archons) and many many troops into the center in order to counter Wolfgang's rapidly emerging powerbase there. This, however, will effectively "pin" his hero and main allies in the center also and allow me to send MJ west deep into his territory to raze as many cities as I can. Once Wolfgang's production base starts to collapse, you'll be able to mop up all of the Green cities that he has taken without difficulty. One thing I would recommend is for you to first bless and then block the temple with your Demon and Giant Worm this turn. The most Wolfgang can attack the temple with on Turn 6 is a nonblessed demon-unicorn-ghost which will lose. You will SEVERELY limit his blessing and expansion options if you do this. Until now, I had mistakenly believed that you were definitely the stronger one between Wolfgang and you... I miscalculated the POSITIONAL advantage he has over the both of us. The good news though is that we are allies and can hopefully help each other eliminate the advantage that Wolfgang currently holds over us. Green does not appear to be able to take advice, so I am not counting on him to win the race to the Dragon in Van Koughnett's Pit.... Once Wolfgang gets that, he will be extremely extremely powerful. If he also gets the Devil in Scott's Secret, I think he will be unbeatable. You MUST win that race. Let me know any other ideas you may have. TO WOLFGANG (WHITE) I had wanted to be friends with you, but you INSISTED on being enemies. I look forward to an exciting series of battles between us in the next couple of turns... _______________________________________________________________________________ Now onto more mundane matters... There are no confrontations with the Reporters, as they have retreated back into their territory. Junior contemplates carefully where he must place his armies as they must be strategically placed for the coming battles. Word is quickly dispatched to the front lines closed to the center of the known world. "Lord Junior," a messenger calls, "your armies have taken the city of Dublin!" Junior is pleased, as the conquering of this city begins production of the mighty Griffin city destroyers. "That is not all," the messenger reports, "your armies were so excited that they marched all the way to Atlanta and conquered it as well!" Junior is stunned. Not only did his armies conquer to major cities, they stopped by the WarBOT temple for a quick drink and blessing! "Dispatch these orders quickly to my generals!" screams Junior. As soon as word reaches the generals, massive armies are seen leaving for the central front. With the new alliance in place, Junior has decided to commit his armies for the upcoming battles and leave the Western front exposed. Senior sends a message to his son. "Son, I have inspired the occupants of our cities by installing cable to each of the castles we own. All have agreed that they will generate extra income for us in agreement for these new TV rights!" Junior is amazed. More money, more cities, and a new alliance, all in one turn! Can life get any better than this? A message is dispatched to MJ/Scottie, "My friends, we have celebrated our new alliance with trust. We have moved all armies out of Seoul and moved them towards the Eastern Front. Our lone spider will evacuate the city following this turn as our agreement is finalized. We apologize for our miscalculated efforts last turn as our Giant Worm had been drinking too much, and did not realize he could have conquered Dublin (yes, I forgot it was a neutral city!). We decided to take both cities to mass the production of Griffins to help our cause. More reinforcements will arrive quickly, and will immediately close the entire center for our alliance. You shall receive word again based on how our opponents move in this next turn. We must coordinate to trap Lord Wolfgang if he continues into your territory. Our Demon/Giant Worm combination can move quickly for a counter strike if necessary!" With the note sent, Junior retires for the evening. There remains only one spider in the city with not enough movement points to reach Seoul so you should be able to empty that city this turn. After Scottie Pippen picks up the Blessing of Olympus from Panagos' Tomb, he shall be joining his buddy Michael Jordan out West. I plan to take the city of Munich next turn and use that city to base my entire offensive against the evil White nation. Please do NOT attack the city this turn since it will allow Wolfgang to raze the city on Turn 7. There is nothing left there for you to pillage anyways. Of more concern to me is the race to the Devil in Scott's Secret..... The White Hero Taurus will be 2 squares away from Scott's Secret on Turn 8 with the Dragon he is going to free from Van Koughnett Pit, ready to take the Devil ally there on Turn 9. If Senior goes full-speed towards the Devil right now, picking up the flight item on the way, he will be within 4 squares from Scott's Secret on Turn 8 in the city of Sarajevo. However, White goes first and will get the Devil, unless you have parked at least an archon-spider-dwarf type combo on the ruin by the end of Turn 8, which will effectively block Taurus from the ruin. That is the only way that I think you can prevent the evil Taurus from stealing your ally. Needless to say, if he gets that Devil, it will be extremely hard for both me and you to defeat him. Lord Junior bows his head. He realizes that his expansion was taking it's toll. He grows weary of the battles. A new order is issued. "We must push our enemies back, but we must hold the ground we take. Prepare your troops for battle!" With the new orders, the Giant Worm army moves into the outskirts of Green territory. Innsbruck falls quickly as 5 brave Wolfriders are slain in a quick victory. The city of Dublin is retaken by the reinforcements that were already sent in the city's direction. A lone scout approaches Lord Junior. "Lord Junior, there is an opportunity for us to take a city deep in the heart of the Western lands. It will, however, require a sacrifice." "Go on," Junior says. "We can take the city of Moscow, as it is undefended. We should pillage all gold as the city will not be held long." "And the sacrifice?" Junior asks. The scout replies, "We will probably lose our brave unit in trying to defend the city against the Organizer scum." "Make it so!" Junior orders. (He's been watching too many TV reruns of ST:NG) Senior does not wait to talk to his son, but immediately heads West to capture the prizes that Madame Dana had carried with her. He fears that Junior has not realized the threat that Taurus can bring to the area. He orders his troops to take a defensive position, but to be able to counterstrike at a moment's notice. Junior writes a note to his father. "Dad, I did not know it was so difficult to win this game. I hope I don't fail you in winning those tickets. I have made many mistakes, and expect to make many more. Your guidance is more important now than ever before!" Junior dispatches the message to his father to await a reply. Another message is dispatched to Junior's new ally: "Lord MJ, Senior has already reacted to the Organizer invasion into Green territory. He is frantically making his way to the battle. We will have enough troops to stop his expansion and begin to push him back. Our troops have been directed away from Seoul except for the 1 spider unit who became trapped in Sydney when Dublin fell unexpectedly. All troops will now be directed away from Seoul in the coming turns so that we may both concentrate on the battles ahead. Good luck, and may you begin to push the Organizers back into their own territory!" Junior is tired. He wants to think of the millions of $$s that await, but he cannot get his mind off of the upcoming battles. The CRITICAL thing you must do this move is move all forces in Innsbruck within striking distance of Scott's Secret this turn. This stack must ALSO include the Lt Cav 2 squares north of Dashorst Pit. Since the Lt Cav is farthest back, that will limit how far the rest of the stack can go but that will be close enough for your purposes. Remember that Lt Cav, and Senior shall have a newly anointed Devil ally on Turn 9. I hope you find my advice helpful... and good luck !!! Meanwhile I have some good news for you regarding my efforts against our common enemy... Next turn, there is absolutely nothing Wolfgang can do to keep me from taking St Louis. I have also positioned MJ this turn to be able to assault that nice elephant city of Melbourne on Turn 9 with a blessed stack led by MJ, dragon, and vectored-in catapult, elephant, spider, archer... Needless to say, that city will fall as well. You can keep the pressure on Wolfgang by moving your forces in Dublin and Atlanta west to take Moscow and Montreal. (Though you should remember to leave a defender or two behind in Atlanta to keep that pesky ghost from ambushing yet another one of your cities) If you do this Wolfgang's entire front will collapse and even better be divided into two isolated halves. Thus, you will be making Wolfgang pay for Taurus' misguided efforts down south to steal your ally. One favor that I have to ask is for you to not park any forces on the temple so we can both benefit from the blessings. I could have but did not park on the temple this turn to allow you the same courtesy. I look forward to us accomplishing our mutual goals in the next two turns... SIncerely, Sun Tzu Excerpt from Chapter 1 (Laying Plans) of Sun Tzu's "Art of War" "Now the general who wins a battle makes many calculations in his temple ere the battle is fought. The general who loses a battle makes but few calculations beforehand. Thus do many calculations lead to victory, and few calculations to defeat: how much more no calculation at all! It is by attention to this point that I can foresee who is likely to win or lose." _______________________________________________________________________________ (1) Michael Jordan is first among all heroes promoted to Cavalier !!! Thus do many calculations lead to victory, and few calculations to defeat: how much more no calculation at all! It is by attention to this point that I can foresee who is likely to win or lose." Then Wolfgang reads the orders Michael Jordan has given the Spectators and notes that he refers to a "Devil"?! He assumes that he is refering to the spectators Archon that is stacked with the Giant Worm. He then reads.... .......... that will limit how far the rest of the stack can go but that will be close enough for your purposes. Attacker wins with 1 unit(s) remaining losing ONLY a spider and lt cav...??? But the WarBot clearly shows that the Giant Worm dies also?!? Is the leader of the Athletes trying to mislead the leader of the Spectators? Maybe he was just CARELESS in his planning of his allies moves?? Wolfgang realizes that it would be of GREAT advantage to the Organizers to weaken the Spectators, because the Spectators will surely be fighting the Organizers soon enough. If MJ was such a loyal ally, why would he advise the spectators to leave its inner cities vulernable to the razings of the mad ghost? Wolfgang is in serious trouble up north, and using the Spectators as decoys to weaken the Organizers fits into his plan quite well. Obviously because he would love to have both the Organizers and the Spectators weakened for his final treacherous assault around turn 14 or 15. Wolfgang begins to plan carefully....he wonders if they have factored in the fact that Taurus shall soon retreive the Chariot of Fire (+2 Battle!) from the ruin of Zak's Zone. Perhaps Taurus shall soon have the Jump of Lewis.... _______________________________________________________________________________ The following message was sent on Tuesday November 25, 1997 at 02:48 AM EST by John Rabasa to all players; REPORT FOR TOURNAMENT ROUND A, GAME A05, TURN 07, SIDE 04. ================================================================= *** Turn Start and Hero Actions: Gold at Start of Turn: 416 9 armies receive blessing (griffen, 3 spiders, 2 wolfriders, 2 dwarves, lt cav) *** WarBOT NoteCard and Battle/City Capture: City Sarajevo (Green) taken uncontested by Giant Worm army, loot 39 Final Cities: 14 Gold: 455 Income: 384 Expenses: 186 Junior Hero Experience: 11 Change from last turn: 0 Senior Hero Experience: 8 Change from last turn: 0 ---------------------------------------------- The bad news was more than expected. Lake Placid, a city known for training outstanding dwarves, was unprepared by a surprise attack. "The city was burned to the ground," Junior is told by his messenger. "They killed the women and children, too!" Junior is furious. He blames himself for not preparing an adequate defense. He cannot believe that families were slain because of his lack of preparation. "War is hell," Junior thinks. "I did not think those innocent people would die just because I wanted to win those stinkin' tickets. I'm not sure it was worth it." Junior quickly puts him mind on his strategy. He realizes the time has come to put an end to the senseless bloodshed! "MOVE OUT!" Junior yells. "MOVE OUT!" Senior yells also. Both had agreed that the 7th turn would be the time for both to mass their armies and move to the fronts. Junior and Senior gathered their troops and have pushed to the front lines. All future turns now lead to significant battles that will turn the tide of the war (not that it was ever against him, but hey, he's been known to screw things up before!). Senior was surprised when his troops reported back that the city of Sarajevo was undefended. "The reports are pulling back on the defensive," reports his Giant Worm leader. "They have fallen back in an attempt to recapture their capital, and to take a front seat to the major battle that will occur right on their front doorsteps between us and the Organizers." Senior reassures his armies that they have reached critical mass. "If he flinches," remarks Senior, "we'll take down that Taures character for good! We will not lose the race for our devil ally!" Junior, all along, is still confused. He has decided to mass a great city conquering army and begins his journey to the east. "Patience, my glorious troops, the great battle lies ahead. We will begin our march into the Organizers' home territory!" Junior dispatches another message to his allies: "MJ/Scottie. We had miscalculated the move of ghost army and the city of Lake Placid is in ruins. We have left behind our spider in Seoul as a defense until it is clear until the ghost is killed. The army has no movement (it was purposely drained) so as not to threaten our treaty. We are moving according to plan, we have left the temple open for your blessings, and we plan to make a major strike against the Organizer armies. Good luck to you in your battles, as a quick strike on both our parts will bring a glorious victory to our alliance!" ----------------------------------------------------------------------- John Rabasa jrabasa@dnai.com This message sent by Claris Emailer 2.0 408-736-5312 (h) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- -----> Please note new email address <----- _______________________________________________________________________________ =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Tournament Game: "A05" Turn Number: 8 Gamefile Sent To: Wolfgang (White) (svankoug@direct.ca) Date Sent: Tuesday November 25, 1997 at 02:48 AM EST Date Gamefile Due: Thursday November 27, 1997 at 02:48 AM EST (In GMT-0800: Wednesday November 26, 1997 at 11:48 PM) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- _______________________________________________________________________________ The following message was sent on Friday November 28, 1997 at 03:27 PM EST by svankoug@direct.ca (Steve VanKoughnett) to all players; Wolfgang receoves word that his brother has become a Cavalier and is now strength 6. soon he will have a +2 battle item. Unfortunately, those 2 fast elementals are going to be potential pests in your backyard. Good luck stamping out pests, and enjoy your rightfully earned Devil. You can possibly also win the Battle Item in Zak's Zone if you play your cards right, but I'll let you figure that one out. Meanwhile news on my frontline is quite good... The assault next turn against Melbourne will be costly to me, but worthwhile nonetheless. I expect it to be defended by Wolfgang, demon, elephant, and up to 12 more units, so I'll also be losing a whole bunch of forces in the deal, but come out victorious in the end. It looks like you'll be able to easily take Moscow this turn, and next turn when you take Montreal and I take Melbourne, White will be effectively split in half. Your efforts to allow free access to the temple were greatly appreciated this turn and I hope both of us can continue this arrangement in following turns. Note that I had to move one wolfrider back into Mt Everest in order to keep that pesky White ghost from razing it. Be sure you make similar counter- measures in your backyard as well.
