__________ __________/ \__________ <__________ Turn 1 __________> \__________/ _______________________________________________________________________________ The following message was sent on Monday October 06, 1997 at 08:28 AM EDT by Tournament Headquarters to all players; Hi all - This message contains some important notes about the special rules for Round A. Read it carefully! -- Bob Round A Rules Reminders! Last Updated 30-September-97 by Bob Heeter Read this message carefully - it contains a lot of essential information! *** Special Note *** We have corrected another minor bug in the scenario. Please replace any previous versions of the Round A Mac Classic scenario with the "1.2" version included in this package! *** Critical Scenario and Rules Changes from the Practice Round *** * Starting Gold: 4200/side * Razing: On Capture only * Round A games will last for 20 turns! * New Gold Rules: The gold limit for Strongholds is now 2500. All the gold is now in strongholds; revert until you get less than 2500. We recommend reverting to get between 2400 and 2500. (The odds of getting between 2400 and 2500 are about 10%, so this takes less reverting than trying to get near 3600!) * Special Builds: The center cities all build griffins! Sack 'em for cash - or build 'em! Note - griffins defending neutral cities are strength 8 (6+2). The neutral cities are set to "active" in the tournament. * New Rule: Two Heroes! You are allowed (and expected!) to revert and get a second hero on Turn 2. *** If you want a second hero, it MUST come ONLY on Turn 2. *** The second hero can come with *any* ally you choose in *any* city you control. You may not replace any dead heroes until *both* heroes are dead. Then the regular hero-replacement rules apply. (Note that once you lose a hero you cannot have more than one hero on the map.) Ask your Moderator or Headquarters for details. The starting gold has been increased to allow the purchase of the second hero. You must report the cost of the second hero and he/she must cost at least 1000 gold. * New Rule: Limited Allies with Replacement Heroes: After Turn 2, all replacement heroes may only come with wizards, ghosts, elementals, or worms. Archons, Demons, Dragons, and Devils are not allowed with replacement heroes - you can only get them from ruins or with your Turn 2 second hero. Warlord, use thy allies wisely! :) * Holidays: The U.S. Thanksgiving Weekend in late November and the midwinter holidays (from December 20 to January 7) will be official "Tournament Holidays". Time limits will not be enforced during those periods, and players do not need to worry about using up vacation time then, although we hope the games will all continue! We expect some games to finish before Christmas, and the rest in January and February. Round B will begin in mid-January after the winter holidays end! More timeouts will be supplied to all Round A players when Round B begins. *** Prizes for Round A *** The four Warlords who write the most entertaining game history will each receive a prize from SSG. The one Warlord who writes the best individual roleplay will also receive a prize from SSG. The awarding of both prizes will be determined after the round ends by a team of moderators (who will exclude themselves from recieving prizes). _______________________________________________________________________________ =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Tournament Game: "A03" Turn Number: 1 Gamefile Sent To: Drummer (Orange) (verdon@efni.com) Date Sent: Monday October 06, 1997 at 11:35 AM EDT Date Gamefile Due: Wednesday October 8, 1997 at 11:35 AM EDT (In GMT-0600: Wednesday October 8, 1997 at 9:35 AM) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- _______________________________________________________________________________ The following message was sent on Monday October 06, 1997 at 11:36 AM EDT by Andreas Girgensohn to all players; [ Note: I'll leave town this weekend for a week. "Let's expand our empire," he thought. Promptly, he went off towards the city of Athens. In last-minute preparations before his departure, he fired his scout and started the training of light cavalry. On his arrival in Athens, the population was so happy to become part of the great empire that they immediately paid 175 gold pieces. Training of spiders began to give the empire some teeth. That being done, he renamed his new capitol to "The Hall" in honour of the event of his coming, and began recruiting Wolfriders to spread the groove. drrrrrrrrrrm, drrrrrrrrrrm, tedum tedum, drrrrrrrrrrm, and on he went to Paris - where he found a society so starved for culture, they threw open the gates and welcomed him with open arms. Much to Drummer's chagrin, he discovered the same scout he had just fired, living there. In a moment of rage, Drummer pillaged the city, and swore to wipe out all traces of all scouts, that he would find in his journies to come. During one brief nostalgic moment, drummer founded a Bat avery, in memory of his childhod pet "Beat the Bat". Now he rests, preparing for the days ahead... ============================================================================== REPORT FOR TOURNAMENT ROUND A, GAME A03, TURN 1, SIDE 2 ============================================================================== Gold at Start of Turn: 4215 ############### BATTLES ######### BATTLES ######### BATTLES ######### WarBOT v1.0a Armyset: Tournament b1-4 WL version: Mac Classic Intense Combat: Off ####################################################################### ####### 1) Drummer beats a path to the nearest neighbour and... Drummer (and Beat the Bat) left Paris and flew over to Luther's Lair. Ahh flying... sure beats the hell out of wading through those swamps, up to your _ in mud ;-) Once there, drummer was joined by a "Develish" rouge, gained his allegiance, and sent him over to London to spread the news. Meanwhile, back at the Hall... the news was spreading like wildfire. The legend of Drummer went far & wide. Now that he was here to lead the athletes, warriors were flocking to his side. The beauty "Perc" (though don't let her looks fool you) was the first to come aboard. She was so eager to join the mighty Drummer that she waived her usual fee and offered her sword (along with a few other favours) for a token 1,036 gold. Joining Perc was her pet demon. No gentle lap dog was this pet. The demon marched on over to Sparta and demanded they join the show. Well, now even a Spartan won't argue with a demon, so in no short order, the Spartans began working out. While this was going on... Perc mounted a wolf (really) and took a ride part way to Hulseman's Keep. After a little muckin about, she found Hercules' Spear and with confidence much bolstered, she made her way to catch up with the wolf. The wolf, who had left Perc part way to the keep, had continued on to Amsterdam where the locals were only too glad to rush to the flag of Drummer. This will not stand, he tells his troops. Blue is now public enemy number one. In the meantime, the expansion of the white empire continues at a my leisurely pace. The white archon takes over Berlin but chooses not to hold it until negotiations with the orange empire are finalized. A single, brave light cavalry unit adds both Mexico City and Montreal to the empire. The Khan turns into a spelunker and finds two ghosts in Dirk's Cavern. Meanwhile, Temujin relaxes in Bob Heeter's Bar and takes along the Pole of Bubka as he leaves. Heavy infantry units are getting training in the cities of Montreal and Mexico City. Diplomacy ========= To Orange --------- >Noble Temujin... Even though the the basic rule says "peace is not an option", you & I both know we don't need to start pecking away at each other right away, if ever, to win. My sentiment exactly. I like to pick my battles and my enemies. >What concerns me about your position is that you are vectoring so many troops into that area while voicing peacefull intention ??? I can understand your concern. However, I started vectoring to my hero at Turn 3 so that the first units will arrive at Turn 6 (production plus two turns). By that time, I expect my hero to be far in the south. >My Giants are mere insurance, and easily sent wherever needed :-) I hope south-east. I would sleep more easily if you vectored them towards your southern border. >As a gesture of goodwill, I have moved my devil from the vicinity ;-) I appreciate that. You probably noticed that Blue is expanding at a rapid pace. While I have just as many cities, it took me an extra turn to get them. Also, Blue already has one of the griffin cities in the center. I would like to propose an alliance against Blue. While that might be more to your advantage -- after all, Blue is your neighbor -- I'm still willing to leave you Munich. Athough the snow was only a dusting, it was nice to get in from the cold. Even nicer were the 3 Wizards who offered to join Perc in her travels. Perc (pretty much a loner usually) saw the need for companionship and comprimised by allowing 2 to join while sending the 3rd packing ;-) Drummer spent much time in consultation and after many hours took a long walk to consider his options. Our fledgling Dragon stretched his wings and pillaged Rome for 175 gold. "Beat the Bat" thanks white for the gift of Berlin :) Unfortunately, the aggresive expansionist policies of Blue have left us no choice but to do a most fould deed. Our Lt Calv sadly reports that the city of Seoul has been razed. On the bright side, any hopes Blue had for using Seoul as a launchpad into the NE have been shattered ;-) Diplomacy ========= To White --------- begin snippet...> >You probably noticed that Blue is expanding at a rapid pace. While I have just as many cities, it took me an extra turn to get them. Also, Blue already has one of the griffin cities in the center. I would like to propose an alliance against Blue. While that might be more to your advantage -- after all, Blue is your neighbor -- I'm still willing to leave you Munich. Admittedly, you are in a better position to take it anyway, but I could try to compete for it. This way, we'll each have at least one central city with access to the temple. ...end snippet> I believe you are right and with a leap of faith, I have moved ahead with an alliance in mind. You'll notice that I have consolidated our borders and have begun vectoring all my production towards Blue. I have also taken the first aggressive move to Blue. In the spirit of your offer, I have occupied Berlin this turn AND WILL OCCUPY MUNICH NEXT TURN NO MATTER WHAT. This gives us an equal distribution of cities near the core map. I, in my west, and You, in your south. If I have misunderstood your intention in leaving Berlin undefended, I apologize. We can always negotiate this later. I have left Berlin vulnerable to you, but if you make an aggressive move without warning, we will be back to square 1. I believe, that with co-operation, we can quickly calm down Blue a bit and get on to the business of beating the daylights out of each other for the ultimate prize :-) To Green --------- What say you, do you think you can do your part in the SE and stop this Blue monster? It was never my intention to give you BOTH of our border cities. Munich with its griffin production is much more valuable than Berlin so that you are already getting the better end of the deal. I hope that you are not one of those people that take the whole hand when offered a finger. Anyway, I'm willing to hold off ONE turn to get Berlin back but that's going to be it unless you come up with a good counter-proposal. I also hope that you'll move the giant away from our border once I have moved my hero south. In the current situation, I have to spend more resources than I like along our common border. So, noble Temujin, what makes you so envious? Why can't I have what I deserve? (I had a hard childhood, you know :) And, btw you could have 10 or 11 cities on turn 3 as well, but you chose different strategy... In fact, it's allways been harder to hold the position than to gain it. So, Eric The Red, can we be friends? Will you choose to join this brand new alliance against me, and get the smaller piece of the pie in the end, or join me to feast on their bones? I'm not even mentioning that 2 on 2 is fairer than 3 on 1... Respectfully, Bastard The Raptor P.S. Answering your question about that griffin and that worm... I moved this weekend (into the house I just bought) so I have not had net access until today (I only have it at work right now since i still don't have a phone line into the room with the computer at my new home). However even missing what I have I should still have today to submit my gamefile. It was sent to me on Wednesday Nov 26 at 12:02 AM EST (all dated E-mails are copied at the bottom of this E-mail). I did not submit my gamefile by Thursday 12:02 am so I missed one of my two days to submit the file. Thursday to Sunday was an offical game holiday where the game should have been suspended, so I don't lose any time for those days. The game should have been revived on Monday 12:00 am. Monday was the last of my two days to submit my gamefile. Since I didn't submit the gamefile by 12:02 am tuesday I should have one timeout taken away. However I should still have one timeout left since I started this weekend with two timeouts (one lost on Friday and one lost on monday at which point I should have still have had 50% of my turn remaining to submit the gamefile) and until Wednesday 12:02 to submit the gamefile before this timeout expires. Mangus could you reset the game settings. I will try to send in the gamefile tonight if I can find a phone line long enough to run to the room with the computer. Otherwise I will send it on Wednesday morning when I get into work. Here are all the Dated E-mails I have recieved: *****- This one shows when I got the gamefile and when it was due: >Date: Wed, 26 Nov 1997 00:03:00 -0500 >To: "Eric the Red (Green)" From: The Warlords II Remailer Subject: "A03" Turn 7 Moves to Eric the Red (Green) >Turn Message: >=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Tournament Game: "A03" >Turn Number: 7 >Gamefile Sent To: Eric the Red (Green) (Eric_Carlson@mindspring.com) Date Sent: Wednesday November 26, 1997 at 12:02 AM EST >Date Gamefile Due: Friday November 28, 1997 at 12:02 AM EST -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- *****- This one shows that Thursday to Sunday the game should have been suspended: >From: "Robert F. I have sent in my gamefile and turn report. Hopefully everything is back to normal. Also I have two requests. First one, Mangus is it possible for me to trade in four vacation days for timeouts? Second, Temujin (White) could you send a Warbot report for the two battles you had with me in Turn 6. Temujin, what I am curious about is how you kept both the Devil and the Griffin, acordding to my calculations you should have lost one. Drummer had his hands full. A restless population kept whispering in his ear (White is vulnerable, White is vulnerable.. it teased). But Drummer stood his ground. "Never... NEVER", he said, "will we unfairly take advantage of a noble ally's faith." "They have been honest with us, and we will treat them in kind." He was just beginning to make his troops see it his way, when news arrived from the SE. The beautiful "Perc" had not only become an Amazon this day, but she had also scored an important victory in "Sapporo". In honour of this glorious occasion, all Orange units took the rest of the day off to celebrate. The home guard thus appeased, Drummer set about planning his final push for the SE. The snow had been falling for days and a mystical sort of stillness lay over the land. While many of the troopscelebrated Christmas near the warmth of a barracks fire, Drummer and a few stalwarts made winter pilgramage to the temple, for blessings and contemplation. He couldn't help but wish that he was spending this magical night in the warm and loving arms of the beautiful and distant Perc. You can imagine his elation when he received a longed for message from the SE. You can imagine his dismay when he found warnings and a hint of taunting, couched amongst the words of longing and love. This is what Perc had to say... " Dearest Drummer Season's Greetings to you and your men. We all miss our homes and none more than I miss you. The campaign in the SE goes well. My plans for expansion are on track, our warriors perform well, and I am gaining tremendous experience (how goes your's, eh? ;-) By-the-way, just exactly how long are you going to sit on your ass, up there by the temple? (Oops, excuse me, that just kind of slipped out... you know, hormones and all.) Have you really thought through your decision to continue to stand-by your agreement with White? Take a look ahead a few weeks in time. You'll find that White's moving a tremendous number of troops towards Moscow. How does that stand in the face of your so-called agreement? Drummer, our population is getting restless. (I've even heard mutterings said that if you had any balls and didn't leave all the dirty work to your wife, you'd have made a move long ago!) We must put an end to this restlesness and I can't do it all by myself. If you hope to see my cute little butt in one piece again, then I suggest you get yours in gear. Loving and missing you dearly, Perc " Drummer crumpled the letter and threw it to the rush floor of the temple. First in anger, then in shame, and finally in confusion. He looked around the temple for inspiration and began to pray for guidance. He was about to give up and opened his eyes. Looking up, Drummer found his guidance. There on the alter, carved in rune, were the ten commandments. Burning in his eyes was the second commandment. "PEACE IS NOT AN OPTION" But a little voice whispered "thou shalt play with honour" More confused than ever, Drummer heeded Perc's advice and took that mystical vision-trip into the future... just to be sure. OH HORROR! Perc was right. All he could see was horde upon horde of white troops moving towards the temple. Elephants ,Ghosts, Griffins, and row upon row of Infantry... and all those spiders that Drummer had allowed into the temple sitting snug (and smug) in thier gateway cities. Drummer's options seemed few. He really did want to see Perc's cute little butt in one piece again. He knew what he had to do \-{ Diplomacy ========= Message to White ----------------- We both knew it had to happen sooner or later and we both knew that you can't win with 50%. We also both know that if I was a really nasty warlord, I would have done this last turn before you could visit the temple and get those spiders back to the cities. I tried to caution and now we react. The killing can stop! All I want is a little wee bit more than half the world. It's really up to you :-) Message to Blue ----------------- One down, one to go. BTW, you might as well retire that Bat up north. I can hear him knockin, but I'm not going to let him in! Message to Green ----------------- I had to close the temple. I couldn't allow any wandering Ghosts to defile it. Don't even think about attacking me. Any orange stack within your range would be suicide. One consolation... I looked ahead in the game many times this turn (I just couldn't believe all the white troops heading my way). In many of those peeks a new green hero arrived. I don't have any idea if one is in your future or not, but even if not, your giant stack should still be able to make a pain of itself. Remember what the wise men say... What will be, will be and You can't take it with you when you go ;-) ############### BATTLES ######### BATTLES ######### BATTLES ######### WarBOT v1.0a Armyset: Tournament b1-4 WL version: Mac Classic Intense Combat: Off ####################################################################### ####### 1) A stack of martyrs take out "Queen Inanna" at "Garmisch-P" Terrain: Enemy city 0,1,2 prod Hero Bonuses Non- For- TOTAL Minus Fly Natural Item Hero tify City Cancel BONUS Enemy Item -------------------------------------------------------------- ATT: 0 0 1 0 N *1* 0 No DEF: 1 0 0 0 1 *2* 0 No Entered Final Attack Units: Strength Strength Survival % --------------- -------- -------- ---------- Demon 7 8 0.51473 <-- Lives! One lone green city remains but there are several opportunities on the orange front. Diplomacy ========= To Green -------- >To White: My last ditch effort didn't work but I can still take you with me. Your alliance to Orange allowed you stack the deck against me. Now that alliance may be your downfall as Orange has turned and is poised to attack your soft underbelly. You are overextended in your effort to take me out. Revenge is Sweet. Dream on. You didn't play completely into my hand so that I couldn't take your last city but that will change next turn. As to Orange attacking my soft underbelly, he might live to regret that. To Orange --------- >We both knew it had to happen sooner or later and we both knew that you can't win with 50%. We also both know that if I was a really nasty warlord, I would have done this last turn before you could visit the temple and get those spiders back to the cities. I tried to caution and now we react. The killing can stop! All I want is a little wee bit more than half the world. It's really up to you :-) PEACE IS NOT AN OPTION -- especially not with back-stabbing turncoats. And all that after I turned over Atlanta as a gift including the spider production. Oh well, I guess I was just too trusty. But I can spend my life now and in all parallel universes to slay Drummer's forces -- R.I.P. A honorable warlord would have cancelled the alliance at least one turn before attacking but there do not seem to be many honorable warlords left.
