__________ __________/ \__________ <__________ Turn 1 __________> \__________/ _______________________________________________________________________________ The following message was sent on Monday October 06, 1997 at 10:48 AM EDT by "Elam T. Birnbaum" to all players; Hello everyone! Now that the official tournament round starter said, let the games begin! This message contains information on how this round is differetn from the practice round. Read it, it is important! Following this message you will receive a noarchive message containing the archive with the gamefile and revised scenario in it. This is the starting gamefile, so Joe Dude the Great should use this file to start his turn. And then we'll be off! So, without further ado, here is the important information... Round A Rules Reminders! Last Updated 30-September-97 by Bob Heeter Read this message carefully - it contains a lot of essential information! *** Critical Scenario and Rules Changes from the Practice Round *** * Starting Gold: 4200/side * Razing: On Capture only * Round A games will last for 20 turns! * New Gold Rules: The gold limit for Strongholds is now 2500. All the gold is now in strongholds; revert until you get less than 2500. We recommend reverting to get between 2400 and 2500. (The odds of getting between 2400 and 2500 are about 10%, so this takes less reverting than trying to get near 3600!) * Special Builds: The center cities all build griffins! Sack 'em for cash - or build 'em! Note - griffins defending neutral cities are strength 8 (6+2). The neutral cities are set to "active" in the tournament. * New Rule: Two Heroes! You are allowed (and expected!) to revert and get a second hero on Turn 2. *** If you want a second hero, it MUST come ONLY on Turn 2. *** The second hero can come with *any* ally you choose in *any* city you control. You may not replace any dead heroes until *both* heroes are dead. Then the regular hero-replacement rules apply. (Note that once you lose a hero you cannot have more than one hero on the map.) Ask your Moderator or Headquarters for details. The starting gold has been increased to allow the purchase of the second hero. You must report the cost of the second hero and he/she must cost at least 1000 gold. * New Rule: Limited Allies with Replacement Heroes: After Turn 2, all replacement heroes may only come with wizards, ghosts, elementals, or worms. Archons, Demons, Dragons, and Devils are not allowed with replacement heroes - you can only get them from ruins or with your Turn 2 second hero. Warlord, use thy allies wisely! :) * Holidays: The U.S. Thanksgiving Weekend in late November and the midwinter holidays (from December 20 to January 7) will be official "Tournament Holidays". Time limits will not be enforced during those periods, and players do not need to worry about using up vacation time then, although we hope the games will all continue! We expect some games to finish before Christmas, and the rest in January and February. Round B will begin in mid-January after the winter holidays end! More timeouts will be supplied to all Round A players when Round B begins. *** Prizes for Round A *** The four Warlords who write the most entertaining game history will each receive a prize from SSG. The one Warlord who writes the best individual roleplay will also receive a prize from SSG. The awarding of both prizes will be determined after the round ends by a team of moderators (who will exclude themselves from recieving prizes). Elam the Mod _______________________________________________________________________________ The following message was sent on Wednesday October 08, 1997 at 08:19 PM EDT by Joe Mithiran to all players; The sign said 'Heroes wanted for pillaging, warfare, destruction & general mayhem.' Dude thought it sounded like just the job for him. 'Righto, first lets see your stuff. Go pillage Los Angeles and we'll see about giving you the job.' Ah, Los Angeles, somehow the thought of wreaking havoc in that city made him all aquiver with anticipation. So much so he just had to thump the pathetic looking scout hanging about the I.O.C. employment office. 'Whups, don't know me own strength.' 'Never mind, we'll clean that up. He never was worth his wages anyhow.' Apparently everybody in Los Angeles was at the superbowl, leaving only one lonely looking scout to look after the gate. The only question was what was going to be the most fun form of dispatching this wretched creature. Unfortunately he died of fright upon seeing dude get ready to cave his skull in without putting up a fight. Pulling apart the scout factory was easy. 'Beudy, you've got the job, and we managed to get 175 gold for the parts from that scout factory you pillaged' said the ethereal voice apparently coming from 'The Real World,' a place most thought was mythical but where Dude knew some pretty weird creatures hung out, one of whom was his boss. 'Hang out in Los Angeles for a bit while we build a couple of Griffin factories.' "Yer late kid" said the editor, "Not good. The old man will be pissed". Cosell comported himself nervously. "Uh, where do I find him?" "Up the stairs, first door on the left, right past the torture room, then left at the armory. Good luck to ya" Thanking the man, Cosell then followed his instructions, eventually winding up where instructed, in front of the battered desk of the dreaded old man. All that was visibile of Don Ehrigi was a thin plume of stogie smoke, trailing above a smeared copy of the newspaper published by Ehrigi's media empire. The only other evidence of Ehrigi's existence were the two hands, tightly clenched on the newsprint, framing the paper. Several moments passed, during which Cosell cleared his throat and shuffled his feet. No response. Cosell remained where he was. This was his last chance. Ehrigi's operation was the only one that had not turned him down. He needed this job. Finally, Ehrigi's voice asked, sharply, "So, you want to be a cub reporter for me?" "Yes, sir...." "Hmmm, alright, you have persistence, or else you would not still be here, and you have patience. I want you to see what you can get out of the St. Moritz angle. I understand there is something brewing down there. I want a story out of it. You're hired. Dismissed." A puff of smoke emerged from the top of the paper. Cosell thanked his new employer and ran to equip himself from stores. Later, A little judicious applied torture gave him some deep background from the paper boy, squeaky. Squeaky, it turned out, had been embezzling from the paper for years, dragging down profits. He was, of course, eliminated in a very public manner, as an example, but unfortunately this was not news fit to print. Dirt on someone else is always news, dirt on your own organization is of course not reflective of the true state of affairs and thus misleading, therefore dishonest, the conclusion being said dirt should never be published, for moral reasons. Fortunately for his career, Cosell knew this, and was able to spin the story nicely towards the theme of how Ehrigi had rooted out corruption within the organization, while the other warlord's corruption was being brought to light and corrected soley because of the crusading journal's tireless reporting. A few other minor stories came up. A story about possible financial troubles in the Organizers camp, and one on the interesting developments in the orange side of life, Then it was on to St. Moritz!. Cosell's stories exposing the truth of the corrupt regime there eventually led the city to decapitate their old mayor and ask for Ehrigi's protection and guidance in how to determine their destiny. When we last heard from our hero, he was arranging to hire a private flight to explore some ruins that had been much speculated about lately: REPORT FOR TOURNAMENT ROUND 1, GAME A01, TURN 1, SIDE 3. ============================================================================== New Hero Howard Cosell arrives in CNN office Gold 4215 Hero Howard Cosell pillages neutral city Squaw Valley Lt. I've got some problems. nobody except our troups knows who I am. What can I do!?" I responded "Uh! You're right. you're a brave Warlord, and people MUST know who you are. I've heard of a nice place, approximately at three hours of horseriding in the west. Here, you can have a nice fight, and you can and must won the TV rights here (gold +6). It's an easy trip for you. I know You'll be successful. Send me a messenger when you have won the TV rights." My Warlord went, and I decided then to create a new Griffin flight School in the Couch for 1700 GP, in order to train Elite Griffins Squadron. It would be a nice surpise for my Warlord when he'll get the lead of a griffin unit. 6 hours later, the messenger came, and told me the good new that Hargluck has won the TV rights. People will now know who he really is, and its real value. The facts: Griffins built in the Couch for 1700 Gp. Warlord Hargluck won the TV rights in Aubert's Crypt. Balance is now of 2515 Gp, I'll earn 46 Gp this turn, and will loose no gp this turn. I've got the smallest Empire (not for long, anyway), with a single city. Hargluck haven't told me how much XPs he had got during the Auberrt's Crypt's fight. _______________________________________________________________________________ The following message was sent on Tuesday October 14, 1997 at 06:22 PM EDT by Joe Mithiran to all players; Rules Error. Got to give you some "goodies". (******************* WAR stories **********************) As Prince Moria of Dungeon suddenly appeared in the castle, it was almost empty! A old man, he said he was General G. Wargluck, and a pet griffin wandered around. The sudden disaster took away most of the working government for this mountain country and left not much behind except an untouched vault of gold. "OUCH! This is the land of PROMISE?? More like a pit of demise, like the black hole I was in...."sighed the lone prince. The HEADQUARTER told him if he can survive this tournament, he will be given a new country and be a KING! "Fat chance......" Moria mumurred. "Looks like you need some help!" The sudden words startle Moria, and he turned to see his old rivalry, Barlog, the devish one from the Dungeon. "Give me half country and I will help you survive!" hissing sound from the tall slender devil. "Never accept the first price", thought our prince and after some more words, they agreed upon a deal, a secret one. "Now, this is my plan........" (AP) London The sinister forces of the so-called "hero dude" overran the valiant defenders of london today. I was there as the walls shook to the tread of the advancing pale minions of dude, grimly entering the city. At first all was quiet. The residents, after all, knew that "there's a war on and that this sort of thing happens from time to time, dont you know", as one of these polite and genial inhabitants told me shortly before the calamity. He was wrong. The pale riders entered the city and spared not but slew, slew every man, woman, and dog who so much as dared cross their path.... The government fell here today amid a culmination of scandals involving the old regime. Chief among these were the failure of key ministers to be present to vote on key issues. The new goverment offered a flag of truce to its neighbors. Don Ehrigi's office issued a statement welcoming the new goverment in power and proposed a more explicit division of territory.... (see page A12, Alliance) DON EHRIGI DENIES INVOLVEMENT IN DEMOCRATIC UPRISING Exclusive to the WL gazette In a formal statement issued today, Don Ehrigi's administration denied reporter's questions regarding possible links between his government and the recent uprising against tyranny in Los Angeles. "The people of Los Angeles have sent a strong message to the regime of hero dude" said Ehrigi, "and that message is to desist from this overly agressive and wasteful military build up on our border. We desire peace and alliance with the north, but a north that is our equal, not our master. We will never, never, never, treat with those who threaten us. Loud cheers drowned out Ehrigi's opposition in parliament, and even much of the opposite benches remained silent, signifying agreement with Ehrigi's words. "What apparently happened, according to our intelligence assets, was a unit of elementals apparently were pushed too far, and began the riots which we have all seen on CNN" Ehrigi said. And went on to outline what little is known about the incident. Meanwhile, speculation is rampant over how Dude's regime will react to this assertion of democracy. Cynics point out that Dude has brutally annexed free cities from the very beginning of his regime, and will not hesitate to put down the rebellion now. Dude's regime declined to comment, but it is believed that property destruction as high as 850 gold pieces resulted from the carnage, and valuable aerospace industries were damaged. (CNN Office) In a surprise move today, Don Ehrigi declined to raze several tempting targets deep within Organizer territory. Speaking to graduating archers at the Squaw Valley academy, he laid out justifcations for his recent foreign policy moves - "Although we could well have made White forces suffer, we declined, as this will be a long war and white has little to gain now from attacking us" Don Ehrigi said. "In addition, withdrawal [of the elementals] would allow force command to severely chastise any attempt at treachery against moscow". Opposition leader Don Murmagi, commenting after the commencement speech, added "the real reason the elemental has withdrawn[the elemental force] is there was no allied support for our action. This government has seriously failed on the diplomatic front. This oversight would not have occured were I at the helm of government". Administration officials denied emphatically Murmagi's point, pointing out there was little our allies could do in any case, and, our limited strike had accomplished its objective, removing pressure from our northern border. Protesters outside the Orange Office demonstrated against the limited move, saying that full strategic bombing should be continued against the north, while supporters of the opposition staged a counter demonstration prostesting the administrations lack of credibility in not taking responsibility for the elemental strike last year. Consolidation of our Forces have allowed a multi layer defense at the key city of moscow, although some analysts, speaking off the record, doubted whether Moscow would be assaulted, since the cost of an enemy attempt would be dear. Meanwhile, reports of high level talks between White and Green continued. Analysts added that at this point, neither side can do anything to the other without suffering crippling losses in return, and the current international situation indicates neither side is able to afford to lose a significant number of heavy units. Optimists hope that since a practical truce is necessary, perhaps a permament one can be forged. WARLORD GAZETTE JOURNALIST MAKES PILGRAMAGE TO TEMPLE! Howard Cosell and his camera crew visited the temple and interviewed the pope this turn. The Pope, in his lastest Bull, had denounced senseless agression and encouraged the common brotherhood of all. Cosell found the pope to be "a strong spiritual advisor, who should be better listened to by the four kingdoms.... ....See Religion on page E12 Howard Cosell and Dragon are blessed for their trouble. SPECTATORS TAKE OSLO The Spectators took a strategic city this turn, on the borders of the Journalists. This move was seen by strategic planners as ambiguous, since Oslo can be used as a jumping off point against either Green lands or against the Athlete-controled city of Atlanta in the north. Despite strong pressure to do so, the administration has declined to commit itself either way to developments, but is described as following with interest events on our Eastern border. An anonymous source within the government observed that, while of course it would be in the better interest of both countries to raze Oslo, The balance of force along the borders, and the growing pressure from our ally Orange upon Blue, serves almost as well from a security standpoint for Green as a demilitarized zone. Thank you for sparing my Giant Worm, and I haven't touched any of your units or unprotected cities (I wouldn't have this round even if you hadn't been as careful as you have been), but for now until events take a very different turn or we reach the end, "All's fair in love and war." Silly quote, while I shouldn't have taken London I certainly prefer knowing what to expect from whom and generally play accordingly. Reporters (Green), we are glad to accept your truce. Methinks it will serve us both very well to stay away from each others cities and allow you to focus on the destruction of the Spectators (Blue) and me on vanquishing the Athletes (Orange). As you have Montreal & Moscow I lay claim to Dublin and Seoul. Sorry about blocking access to the temple, the consequences of allowing Athletes access to it were unacceptable to my forces (and they wouldn't have done you a lot of good either). _______________________________________________________________________________ __________ __________/ \__________ <__________ Turn 6 __________> \__________/ _______________________________________________________________________________ =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Tournament Game: "A01" Turn Number: 6 Gamefile Sent To: Gem (Orange) (jpanagos@cellophane.com) Date Sent: Thursday December 11, 1997 at 02:48 AM EST Date Gamefile Due: Sunday December 14, 1997 at 02:48 AM EST (In GMT-0800: Saturday December 13, 1997 at 11:48 PM) -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- _______________________________________________________________________________ The following diplomatic history message is from jpanagos@cellophane.com (Jim Panagos) and is being sent to all the players of the Warlords II game "A01". REPORT FOR TOURNAMENT ROUND 1, GAME A01, TURN 6, SIDE 2. ============================================================================== For who knows why???? the Sun King & Queen (who by the way is now an Amazon str. 6) had war declared upon them again by Organizers (white). Perhaps our peacefull nature is misconstrued as weakness. Our citizens were frightened and alarmed! We are trustworthy, but once crossed, fight viciously! Organizers (white) Soooo, you want a fight!!! OK!! but you'll be fighting with!!! One less Giant Worm (dead) One less Archon (dead) and sad but true, ONE LESS HERO (dead) by carefull passing of a battle item from Sun Queen to King we were able to capture and occupy Berlin! I seriously doubt if you will have any ghosts or heroes left after Reporters turn! Peace is not now an option :-( Reporters (Green) It's sad that white decided to make me his target when the spoils of my victory are closer to you. Oh well, you have problems of your own with Spectators (blue). We've been thinking about Atlanta and realize this has great strategic importance to you and Blue. Even though I won it fair and square (when neutral), I would be willing to exchange it for comparable city, or an item! Blue (Spectators) Once again our peace holds, and your progress is great! I noticed your griffin moving NW of Lake Placid. I could have easily taken this griffin out with my wizard and been left invulnerable! But, as you have seen with Organizers (white), I do not like taking first blood. In their weakened state I could easily turn my attention toward you, but as long as you abide by your original proposal and I see no movement toward my kingdom, I will continue to wipe up White and peace will reign (-: BTW- The same conditions for Atlanta hold for you as well, a fair exchange: (like Sydney or Lake Placid or item). Ok, as per the Preliminary Rules, I did the following: 1) Retreated all Green forces to the cities they were nearest to. 2) The rules do not specify this, but I took the initiative to do this. One of Green's heros was on top of a planted standard. Technically, I would be required only tyo move his stack towards the nearest castle, without picking up the standard. However, in this case, I picked up the standard, moved the stack to the nearest city (which he couldn't wuite reach), and replanted the standard. I did this because the idea of the Preliminary Phase is to retreat forces, not change builds, vectors, or anything else. Had Green vectored units to his standard, but the standard was left undefended or not planted, those buids would be bounced, which would violate the spirit of the Preliminary Phase. Now, Blue can go now by ending Green's turn and proceed normally. Hopefully Don Ehrigi ca contact us before his next turn comes around (which I think has a good chance of hapenning because of the upcoming holidays). If he is still gone, we'll have to implement the Static Defense. I'll get into that if it arrives. In the meantime, Don, please let us know your situation. The game must go on. Elam the Mod _______________________________________________________________________________ The following diplomatic history message is from Greg Ehrig and is being sent to all the players of the Warlords II game "A01". KING DON EHRIGI, ADDRESS TO THE UNITED PRESS PARLIAMENT Yesterday, December 7, 1997--a date which will live in infamy--the United Press Reporters were suddenly and deliberately attacked by land and air forces of the Empire of the Spectators. The Reporters were at peace with that Nation and, at the solicitation of the Spectators, were still in conversation with its Government and its Emperor looking toward the maintenance of peace. Indeed, one hour after the Spectator air squadrons had commenced bombing in Nagano, the Spectator Ambassador to the Reporters and his colleague delivered to the Secretary of State a formal reply to a recent Reporter message. While this reply stated that it seemed useless to continue the existing diplomatic negotiations, it contained no threat or hint of war or armed attack. It will be recorded that the distance of Nagano from the Spectators makes it obvious that the attack was deliberately planned many days or even weeks ago. During the intervening time the Spectator Government has deliberately sought to deceive the Reporter Government by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace. Yesterday the Spectators also launched an attack against Innsbruck. Last night Specator forces attacked Sarajevo. This morning the Spectators attacked Midway Island. The Spectator nation has, therefore, undertaken a surprise offensive extending throughout the South central area. The facts of yesterday speak for themselves. The people of the Reporters have already formed their opinions and well understand the implications to the very life and safety of our Nation. As Commander in Chief of the Army and Air Force I have directed that all measures be taken for our defense. Always will we remember the character of the onslaught against us. No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion, the Reporter people in their righteous might will win through to absolute victory. I believe I interpret the will of the Parliament and of the people when I assert that we will not only defend ourselves to the uttermost but will make very certain that this form of treachery shall never endanger us again. Hostilities exist. There is no blinking at the fact that our people, our territory, and our interests are in grave danger. With confidence in our armed forces--with the unbounded determination of our people--we will gain the inevitable triumph--so help us God. I ask that the Parliament declare that since the unprovoked and dastardly attack by The Spectators on Sunday, December 7, a state of war has existed between the Reporters and the Spectator Empire. If you were to attack me, Orange would certainly exploit her preeminince and crush you, if not now, then later. To Blue: Japan was defeated for two reasons. The only thing I did was to retreat the last two stacks to the nearest castle. From now on (for the rest of the 2 weeks Joe has for "additional absences") Joe's turn will be skipped by Jim (I won't get involved directly anymore). Here is what should happen: 1) Hsiao-Chiu sends his gamefile normally through the Remailer. All of us get a copy of the gamefile (including Joe). 2) Jim will open the gamefile, reject any white heros that might be offered, and immediately end the turn and save the gamefile as if it was Joe's gamefile (i.e. renaming the file so that it the turn and player number is correct). 3) Jim must the compress that gamefile and send it through the Remailer so that the Remailer registers Joe's turn. 4) Jim can then work on his own turn from this gamefile and he has 2 days as usual to get his turn out. This procedure is set up so that the Remailer properly registers the correct player's turn and that everyone will receive all gamefiles, even if practically nothing happened with White that turn. This procedure will not continue forever. It is only as long as the Standing Orders are used (2 weeks since the Preliminary Phase). If Joe hasn't contacted us since then, he will be turned into a Static Defense, his name will be removed from the game's mailing list, and Jim no longer has to get out two gamefiles, just his own (since the game will essentially be a three player game). After this he will be eliminated from the game and Gem (Orange) will skip the Static Defense's turn every time he receives a gamefile from Prince Moria as per the instructions I laid out earlier (basically skip the turn). Remember that a Static Defense hero's items are off limits. The following changes were made: 1) A build of light infantry was purchased in IOC for +2 defense. 2) All units were moved to the bottom two squares of the cities so that non-enhanced units are segregated from enhanced units. 3) White was switched to "Enhanced" mode, meaning that any new arriving units will be at +2 strength. So, a griffon has a base strength of 8, or 10 in a city. No change in anything else. This will be the last turn message for White. Birnbaum" to all players; Ok, as predicted, Don Ehrigi is a lost player and since we did the preliminary phase last turn, he will be fully converted to a Static Defense this turn. The following was done: 1) All troops were moved to the bottom two spaces. All new units are enhanced and will appear on the top two spaces. 2) The green hero stack, which is the only green stack out in the open, was retreating towards one of his own castles which is now orange. Therefore, he is retreating towards another of his castles. It will take several turn for him to get there (more on this later). 3) I built a light infantryman in the green castle that built nothing as per the Static Defense rules. He had no more money, so no other builds were made. 4) After this message, I will delete Don from the game ans it will become a two player game. Ok, now, this is what Prince Moria will have to do: 1) When you receive the gamefile from Gem, you must go into the green turn, so a MOVE ALL, and then end it. Do your own turn normally. Since Don is deleted, there is no need to send more than one gamefile. It is very important that you do a move all because there is still one green stack out in the open. 2) If, as a result of actions you or Gem take, the castle that the green hero stack is heading towards is not green anymore when he finally arrives, make sure to note this in a query mail to me. I will then look at the gamefile and tell you which new castle he should head towards. I won't deal with the file itself since telling you will go faster. That should cover things. Lets get this game going! I expect the turns to go fast enough to have us catch up to the rest of the games...
