Tournament Volunteer Positions

Last Updated Dec. 19, 1996 by Bob Heeter

There's plenty of room for more help, even where someone has already been designated, so let's get some more gung-ho players on board!

Role Descriptions:

  1. Moderators:

These people will also serve as the game moderating team once the tournament starts.

    Rules Gurus (PC & Mac)
Responsible for finalizing the rules, and then moderating rules disputes during the tournament.
    Bonuses Gurus (PC & Mac)
Create a clear battle-bonus flowchart which can be posted on the Web and distributed to all players.
    Registration Guru (both)
Receives player registration information and creates player listing.
    Round Seeding Guru (both)
Takes list of players/platforms and assigns players to games.
Game Setup Gurus (PC & Mac)
Organizes the setup packages for each round (ruins, scenario, game file etc.), distributes them to players, and sends the cue to the Official Round Starter to start the round.
    Statisticians (PC & Mac)
"Tournament Statisticians" (a pair who operate independently and double-check each other) will keep the game statistics, spot-check game reports for accuracy, and maintain player rankings from game to game within the tournament. The actual statistics will be kept on the Web so everyone can see how everyone is doing, but the statistician doesn't need to write the Web pages, just generate the data.
    Scenario Gurus (PC & Mac)
Scours the scenario archives and determines which scenarios are tournament-quality. Encourages all known scenario designers to create tournament scenarios. Supervises the modification of existing scenarios to make them suitable for tournament play. Selects scenarios for each game in each bracket, and determines appropriate settings for each scenario to be used in the tournament.
    Mailing List Gurus
Manages tournament mailing lists and web archives

  2. Tournament Support:

These are additional activities which are important to make the tournament work, but are not directly relevant to moderating the games.

    Ombudsman:
Answers questions from interested players by directing them to appropriate information.
    Prize Organizer
Checks into possible tournament prize ideas
    Liason to SSG
Designated contact point for working with SSG as needed.
    PBEM-Remailer Guru
Automatically handles game email management, sending game files to all players, enforcing 2-day-or-pass rule, etc. (Elam Birnbaum developed this.)
    Official Round Starter
Sends out the official message to start each round!
    Strategic Reserve
Available in case of some urgent future need, of course!

  3. Scenario Support:

We need the help of many scenario designers to create balanced four-player scenarios with interesting themes for the tournament!

  4. Overall Coordinator

Recruits and keeps in touch with all of the above to organize everyone and make the tournament happen. Maintains overall tournament web site with pointers to subsites maintained by the various people up above. Does whatever needs doing.
