                               INTRODUCTION

Time: 1995 A.D.

Diplomatic relations and cooperation between old friends and neighbors
has all but disappeared as South America finds itself in the worst time
of economic depression, joblessness and poverty it has ever experienced.
Governments topple everyday to be replaced by military juntas or groups
of revolutionary visionaries under this banner or that.

United States foreign policy toward Latin America is almost nonexistant
as the Clinton administration continues to defend itself against the
conspiracy and organized crime charges brought against Hillary and now
it faces a new embarassment of paternity charges by three Arkansas farm
girls against the President.

Further exacerbating the situation is the lack of action by Mexico in
its capacity as diplomacy broker. Her president is too busy courting
American businesses to operate under NAFTA. He refuses to acknowledge
pleas from southern neighbors. He's afraid any assistance might lend
credibility to charges NAFTA has turned South America into an virtual
economic wasteland since Mexico became a full trading partner with
the U.S. and Canada.

Even now, first shots are being fired as neighbors covet natural
resources and old territorial and border disputes rekindle the flames
of nationalism. U.N. observers predict all-out, continental war is
inevitable and that it may lead to one of the most costly ecological
disasters of the 20th century.

The prices of coffee, cocoa and other exports from the South have
already skyrocketed on international commodity exchanges. Tourism
dollars have practically disappeared. Environmentalists are terrified
over prospects of what a war might do to the remaining rain forests.

This is the situation facing you, Warlord. Can you dominate the
continent to regain peace and prosperity, united under your banner?

THE PLAYERS. Several factions representing nationalist and regional
interests have siezed national and provincial capitals on the continent.
Although they claim to espouse a varied number of philosophies, most
have one thing in common: they believe they can conquer their neighbors
and maybe the rest of the continent.

One faction, based in Chile, the Red Brigade (or El Brigado Rojo) seeks
to build a workers' paradise and will stop at nothing to reach its goal.

The Green Party, or La Partida Verde, like its sister parties
throughout the world, is full of fanatics and hotheads who believe
violence and even murder is permissible for those who would save
the planet's environment.

Brazil's Democracy Now (Democracia Ahora!) is perhaps the most modern
and well-equipped faction. They even contend they will return control
of territories and administration to local leaders after they success-
fully subdue outlaw governments whereever they find them.

The Liberators (Los Liberadors) and the Freedom Party (La Partida
Libertad) are primarily nationalist forces raised to defend and pre-
serve their own territorial borders and economies against foreign
aggressions. However, both have stated they will annex territory in
any state where a government, not constitutionally and popularly
mandated, is in power.

The British Commonwealth has been forced to act without support from
her principal ally because of the political quagmire preventing
Washington from anything but inaction. Based from her protectorate
in the Falkland Islands, British expeditionary forces have been
commanded to resist any attempts to take the islands by force and
to render any aid possible to the former European colonies in
Guyana and Suriname and France's colony in Guiana.

The most sinister belligerant is the Facist movement which has
long festered in the La Plata region and surround territories.
Led by the sons and grandsons of escaped Nazi war criminals and
staunch followers of the Fuhrer, they have kept alive their hopes
of a Fourth Reich starting in South America and eventually returning
their capital to Berlin. Financed through secret Swiss bank accounts
and rich caches of gold smuggled from Europe in 1945, El Facismo has
a formidable array of weapons and large numbers of German, Dutch, and
Italian expatriates, in addition to vast legions of local forces re-
cruited with promises of prosperity and power upon victory.

UNITED NATIONS. While the U.N. is not represented by a side in the
scenario, it is present in the form of monsters. Four different
monster strenghs represent U.N. Observers, Infantry, Tanks and
Commando units assigned in various peace-keeper functions.

Other monsters play the roles of double agents, politicians, pro-
testors, a mutinous brigade, etc.

                              GAME DESIGN NOTES

RUINS & ARTIFACTS. The "artifacts" you will find in the ruins of Rain
Forest Wars are unlike most you'll find anywhere else. Some are
intangible, Local Press Support, CIA Support, etc. Others are
modern and hi-tech: Spy-Sat uplinks, crypto (short for "encrypted")
radio networks, secure voice networks, and the like. While others
still are representative of current military capabilities and
recent U.S. aid and, to some extent, aid from the former U.S.S.R.,
such as T-62 tanks, C-130 airlift, and other merchandise brokered
through the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) programs.

GEOGRAPHY. While using a map on the small scale of Warlords ][
(126 pixels by 155 pixels) makes minute detail a tough task, every
attempt to accurately portray the actual location of cities and towns
was made. About 85 percent of the places depicted are real cities.
For these, read the signs nearby to learn about their founding dates and
populations (figures are the latest census data available on Encarta).

Since I could find virtually nothing on Encarta pertaining to settlements
or towns along the interior of the Amazon, I used literary license to
make up mercenary encampments, trading posts and other facilities.
I felt this ran counter to the educational value I intended for the
scenario. But, what would a South American war be without activity
in the middle of the Amazon?

Waterways of all lengths, depths and widths abound in South America,
especially in the Amazon Valley and surrounding regions. Obviously,
on this scale, an accurate representation would have been impossible.
The depiction of the Amazon and its major tributaries is, of necessity,
symbollic and as close to accurate as possible.

HERO NAMES. To add local flavor to the scenario, ethnic naming
conventions were used in the depiction of hero characters. Please
excuse any misspellings of Spanish surnames. Many surnames used
here were taken from maps of Spain and her former colonies. So,
minor transcription errors may have crept in.

You'll notice all hero names emerging on the Orange side, Brazil
(Democracia Ahora), are Portuguese. While much of Brazil actually
speaks Spanish (with somewhat of a Portuguese flavor), since the
official language of Brazil is Portuguese, I chose to apply it as
the standard.

For your edification, Portuguese has a peculiar sound occuring in
any word ending in two vowels ("ao", "ui", etc). It is a very
nasal quality and actually ends in an "n" sound. The most common
is the ending of "ao", such as in Sao Paulo. The name of this city
is not pronounced, Say-oh Paul-oh. It is pronounced Soun Pow-loo.
The "ao" sound is very similar to our word, "sound", without the "d".
An "o" as the initial or final sound in a Portuguese word is
pronounced as a dipthong, "oo" as in "cool" or "woo". Also, please
note that many names are similar in Spanish and Portuguese, but,
names ending with a "z" in Spanish, usually end with "s" in
Portuguese. A final "s" is usually pronounced "sh". Example:
Cortez in Spanish is Cortes (Cor-tesh) in Portuguese.

For ease of associating heros with their sides, surnames of heros
have been sorted by first letter into the various Spanish speaking
sides (White, Yellow, Green, Red and Dark Blue). [Coming up with
almost 500 Spanish surnames was a real chore.] I resorted to the
atlas since many European family names, Spanish and otherwise, can
be traced back to the village or town where their ancestors
resided and journeyed from centuries ago. Others were taken from the
annals of South American politics from the 1600s to the present.

The six Hispanic sides use a few "nicknames" for their heros. This is
a fairly common practice among revolutionary armies in Latin America.
To distinguish them, I've used color adjectives according to the
side they lead. (By the way, "naranho" is not a misspelling of orange
in Spanish. It is the Portuguese spelling!)

Anglo-Saxon (and a few Gallic) names were used exclusively for the
Commonwealth leaders. (See if you can catch references to other games
and/or historic odds and ends of possible interest to the folks at SSG.)

The Facist heros were given predominantly German names with a few
Austrian and Dutch families thrown in to represent a more accurate
depiction of the various Neo-Nazi groups active in Latin America
(and Europe, for that matter). While Italian names would have been
appropriate too, I felt they could be confused for Spanish names, so
they were avoided them.

SYMBOLIC REPRESENTATION. The two types of tank units are labeled as
T-62 and M1-A1. Of course, South American armies have tanks manu-
factured on the continent itself as well as systems purchased from
the U.S. under FMS and from the former Warsaw Pact powers through
the Pact's version of FMS. So, please do not send me mail criticizing
the depiction of the tanks, since they are meant to be symbolic and
not authentic (too many types of tanks and not enough room to accu-
rately protray either a T-62 or an Abrams).

                             THE LAST WORD

I received a thorough grounding in Warlords ][ Scenario Builder.
But, more importantly, designing this scenario provided an opportuni-
ty to learn more about South America than I ever thought possible.
Although I lived in Portugal two years and have traveled extensively
in Spain and Mexico, I've never been south of Chiapas. In a way, this
scenario gave me that travel opportunity vicariously. I sincerely
hope you'll enjoy playing it as much as I enjoyed designing it.

You'll notice the highlighting of the contribution of air power
(as you'll see in the ally and temple ally forces). But, you see,
I'm a retired USAFer and a bit partial to things such as C-5s,
F-16s and A-10s. Once you get one of these babies on your side,
you probably will share that partiality.

Again, thanks for downloading this scenario. Please send any comments
and/or suggestions to via E-mail. In order of my preference:
