Ê Version 2.0 © 1994Ð6 Strategic Studies Group Pty Limited Installation If it not necessary to install a copy of Warlords II to your hard drive. It can be run directly from the CD. However, if you do copy it to your hard drive, it will run faster. To copy Warlords II to your hard drive, simply drag one of the three folders onto your hard drive. The three folders each offer a different number of scenarios, and the other files used by Warlords II. Warlords IIÑSmall Install: This contains 11 scenarios (plus the tutorial), and all the files required to run these scenarios. This means that only a limited selection of army, city and shield sets are available for use in generating random scenarios. The ÒStartup movieÓ file is not installed. Warlords IIÑMedium Install: This contains the same 11 scenarios (plus the tutorial) in the small installation. However all the army, city and shield sets are included for use in random scenarios. The ÒStartup movieÓ file is installed. Warlords IIÑFull Install: This contains all 60 scenarios (plus the tutorial), as well as all the army, city and shield sets. The ÒStartup movieÓ file is installed. The Warlords II Scenario Installer can be used to add more scenarios to what ever installation you choose. See below for information on how to use it. Memory Note: the memory requirements listed in the manual are for the 68k Macintosh version only, and are not valid for the Power Macintosh if Virtual Memory is turned off. In this case, add 1.3MB to all the listed figures. In this Read Me! file, all references to memory will be given as Ò2.5MB (3.8MB)Ó, where the amount in parentheses is the memory for the Power Macintosh. The minimum amount of free memory Warlords II requires is 2.5MB (3.8MB). If you have a 4MB (8MB) Macintosh you may need to turn off some System Extensions to free up sufficient memory. However, we do not recommend using Virtual Memory. Warlords II has itÕs own memory management scheme, which slows down considerably if Virtual Memory is present. The more memory you make available, the faster the game will run. For best performance, give Warlords II 4MB (5.3MB) or more. If you have less than 3MB (3MB) allocated to Warlords II, the startup animation will not run, music will not be played and the Strategy Map will be restricted to the small size. Note for RAM Doubler users: If you are using RAM Doubler, do not allocate more than your physical memory size to Warlords II. If you allocate more memory to Warlords II, RAM Doubler will need to use itÕs advanced techniques to make more RAM available, which will slow down Warlords II. Compatibility with MS-DOS Warlords II Deluxe This version of Warlords II for the Macintosh is compatible with Warlords II Deluxe for MS-DOS computers. Save games in MS-DOS format can be exchanged between the two version, for both normal play and for E-mail play. Scenarios from the MS-DOS version can also be used with this Macintosh version. See the section on the Warlords II Scenario Installer below for details. E-Mail games The E-mail support in Warlords II has been completely rewritten in this version, and no longer requires PowerTalk to operate. To set up a E-mail game, at the Game setup window, turn the ÒE-mail gameÓ check box on. Optionally, click the ÒSetup E-mailÉÓ button to customise the save games that are generated. Ê In the E-mail setup window you can enter a name for the game and for each of the human players in the game. These names are used to generate the name of the save game file that is generated by Warlords II. There is a limit of 10 characters for each of these names. Also, you can turn the ÒInclude MS-DOS playersÓ check box on if you will be playing the E-mail game with players using the MS-DOS version of Warlords IIÊDeluxe. If you do this, then you will not be able to give each player a name, and the name for the game will be limited to four characters. The save games will automatically be in MS-DOS format, and will have a cryptic name in the format NAME12s4.save, where ÒNAMEÓ is the game name you enter, Ò12Ó is the turn number (for turns over 99, the first digit is discarded) and Ò4Ó is the side number that the game needs to be e-mailed to. At the start of each human playerÕs turn, the game will be saved, and Warlords II will return to the scenario selection window. The save game file can be found in the ÒE-Mail SavesÓ folder. If the game cannot be saved for any reason, you will be given an opportunity to save the game somewhere else. While the dialog asking you what you wish to do is displayed, you can change from Warlords II to another program, allowing you to clear room on your hard drive if you are short of free disk space. The E-mail save games are not compressed by Warlords II, and the use of a compression program is recommended to speed up transmission of the game file. Warlords II Scenario Installer If you copy either the Medium install or the Small install to your hard drive, you can add to the scenarios you have available with the W2 Scenario Installer. To use it, it must be in the same folder as your Warlords IIÊgame. The scenario and other files will be placed into the ÒScenariosÓ, ÒArmiesÓ etc folders that are in the same folder as the Installer. The available scenarios are in the ÒScenarios To InstallÓ folder on the CD-ROM. Open the folder, and choose the scenarios you wish to install. Simply drag these files onto the W2 Scenario Installer. For each scenario, you will be presented with a window showing the name of the scenario and the army, city and shield sets that the scenario used. You can stop any of these elements from being installed by turning off the check box for that element. Then click the ÒInstallÓ button to begin. You can also use the W2 Scenario Installer to install scenarios generated with the MS-DOS version of Warlords II Deluxe for use with the Macintosh version. To do this, the MS-DOS scenario must be packed using the Warlords IIÊDeluxe InstallerÕs Librarian window. In order for the Macintosh to be able to understand the scenario, it must be packed with Compression turned off. See page 93 of the Warlords II Deluxe manual for the MS-DOS version for details. Balloon Help Due to a bug in Balloon Help, we have been forced to change the way help is accessed. All online help functions are exactly as described in the manual, except that a mouse click is now required while holding down the Control Key. You can still turn on Balloon Help from the Help menu, but we do not recommend doing this as it will waste System Memory, and eventually result in a System crash. Music If you have more than 3MB (3MB) of memory allocated to Warlords II, and you are still not getting music, or the music sounds strange, then it is possible that QuickTime does not have enough memory to play the music properly. QuickTime needs System memory. To make more System memory available, try the following: ¥ quit other applications that are running ¥ turn off unnecessary System Extensions ¥ as a last resort, allocate less memory to Warlords II, as long as this does not reduce the allocated memory below 3MB (3MB). Dialog Speedup This application changes the marble picture used as a background to the dialogs in Warlords II. The new background picture is a simple gray, and is very quick to draw, thus speeding up Warlords II. This speedup will be most noticeable on 68030 Macs and slower 68040 Macs. As Power Macs are already very fast, this speedup is not required. To install the new background, simply drag Warlords II onto this application. Do this again to restore the original marble background. Game Clarifications Some people have asked us what the little bags of gold are that may stay behind on the map after a hero is killed. These bags contain the items that the hero was carrying. To pick these items up, move a hero over the bag, and use the Inspect Heroes menu item in the Heroes menu (see pp 50-52 of the manual). There is a limit of 1000 armies in Warlords II. This limit covers all eight sides in the game. Once this limit has been reached, cities will stop producing armies automatically. Also, any heroes you are offered may not be able to appear. The Report and History dialogs remember the last panel you looked at in them. If you find yourself looking at the City History panel, you can simply select the History menu (or -H) to view it again, for example. Random scenarios cannot be converted from the Macintosh to the MS-DOS version of Warlords II. If you wish to play an E-mail game on a random map involving players using the MS-DOS version, you will need to generate the random scenario with the MS-DOS version, and use the Installer on the MS-DOS version to make a SCZ file, and the Scenario Installer on the Mac to convert it to the Macintosh format. GeoPort Incompatibility We have discovered an incompatibility on some machines between Warlords II and the fax software supplied with GeoPort Telecom Adaptors. If you are running this software and experience any problems, especially with sound or during combat, you should turn off the fax software. This will involve removing the following extensions, Fax Extension, Fax Sender and Fax Terminal 7.5 compatibility if present, from the Extensions folder in your System Folder and also the Express Modem Control Panel from the Control Panels folder in your System Folder and restarting your Macintosh. It appears that v1.2.2 of the GeoPort software helps to solve the problem. Monitors Warlords II will attempt to arrange the windows well for your monitor size. However, if you need to change the window arrangement, the new positions will be remembered. If you have a large monitor, you should allocate more memory to Warlords II. Power Macintosh The Game Settings dialog now contains two new options that are not documented in the manual. These options appear only in the Power Mac version of Warlords II. ¥ Fast hidden map: this changes the way the edge of the visible area is drawn, speeding map draws significantly. ¥ Speed limit: this puts a limit on the maximum number of squares an army can move in a second. If you find that the armies move too fast, turn on this option. Speed tips Things to do if you find that Warlords II runs slower than you would like: ¥ Give Warlords II as much memory as you can. ¥ Reduce the size of the main window. ¥ Ensure the monitor is set to 256 colors. ¥ Turn off unneeded System Extensions. ¥ Turn off the music. Random Map Scenarios When you create a new random map you are asked to name the newly created random map scenario. This file must be present for any save games using this scenario to work. If you create a new random map scenario and save the file with the same name as an existing random map scenario you will invalidate any save games based on the first scenario. Warlords II will not be able to detect the error and the results will be unpredictable. Please be very careful when naming your random map scenarios.
